The paunchy, smiling figure of Maitreya with his "all-embracing bag" reminds us to emulate the bodhisattva spirit: being big-hearted and compassionate, one cheerfully accepts all and gives all.
In Brazil, there is a chinese group that i am member of it. It is maitreya buddha. I have learned chinese by myself. I started this year to recite amituofo, and i sttopped to smoke. 阿弥陀佛 Amituofo bring inner peace.
The story he is telling is actually about Budai, or Xiào Fó 笑佛 [The laughing buddha]. He was actually a monk that lived as late as the 10th century in Wuyue Kingdom, China. Some say that Budai's following was more of a cult than actually tracing back to the Tripitaka mentions of Maitreya [referred to as Ajita in Pali]. Even the text regarding Ajita is suspected as apocryphal [inserted into original texts as forgeries]. So, is what this man saying to be believed? Well, the importance of the tales is not to be taken literally, but as folk tales meant to inspire kindheartedness and wholesome living.
"The real witness of the spirit to the second birth is to be found only in the disposition of the genuine child of God, the permanently patient heart, the love of self eradicated. And this, it has to be admitted, is also found in those who pass no crisis, and may even be found outside of Christianity altogether."- William James. Friendship, like love is a lie.
Your mind shall be pure by studying all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas. Read and Recite many Sutra available here on youtube. Complete what ever vows a Bodhisattva Mahasattva vowed and what ever Buddhas vows and you shall become them. One of my favorite Sutra is Earth Store Sutra. Gotta complete Earth Store Bodhisattva Mahasattva's vows first before you can become the Buddha.
if you think about it, 5.6 billion years is quite similar to the current age of our world.. there are many cycles of the world. Worlds are remade many, many times over... In 5.6 billion years, our Earth will be remade, humans will be gone, but another intelligent life will rise to take our place , perhaps not even on Earth, but on another planet entirely, and that is when another Buddha needs to teach the beings once more about the Dhamma, to show them the way. The Buddha of our time is Shakyamuni, His teachings have lasted for 2,600 years, and it will last until the end of humanity. There will not be another Buddha in any of our lifetimes, because it isn't neccessary.
yes you are right ...but I am not the Buddha I AM ALONE and a bit lost I NEED FINISH my meditation ignorance is fat know ...ignorance as me slaved Dalai Lama is a human trash don't looking for me ..I go finish Buddhism.. it become religion the home of ignorance ..ps please stop killing my animals let them free.
Buddha maitreya has one mission. In my vihara my teacher says to me that buddha maitreya has one mission. But unfortunately i can't tell you what is that mission.
He was here for a while, right now he's left this planet. He will take birth on Earth and many other places until he has complete realization and returns as a world honored one, teacher, Buddha. That one that is here calling himself Maitreya is not him. Maitreya is a loving, humble and modest being who radiates naturally and even the animals recognized him. So please don't look for Maitreya in the world right now look in your own hearts and discover who is having this experience. Furthermore uncover your own compassionate nature and generate loving kindness for all beings. That is the essence of Maitreya and all the Buddhas, including you.
The big bellied laughing Buddha that people take for Sakyamuni Buddha (Gautama Buddha) is sometimes called 'Hotei' - a previous incarnation of the future Maitreya Buddha. He embodied bodhicitta, not being afraid to love or be loved, or to give gifts or receive gifts. Quite a bit is known about him if you care to search. One parallel would be 'Father Christmas' in Christianity. Also a big and hearty man (red faced and big bellied, shouting ho ho ho). Taking the gifts of mince pies and sherry when he comes down the chimney, but also leaving gifts to those who have given to him. "Give and you shall receive". Luke 6:38 Love and you shall be loved. There are none so mean-spirited as those that shall not receive a gift. There are parallels with other religions and cultures too, but the Father Christmas one is nice.
I realized this as well. And I sincerely think the spirit of Maitreya was also present in St. Nicholas, both figures would eventually be revered as protector of children. Whatever the truth is, it's comforting to feel that somehow a higher power is watching over all of mankind.

Actually it is much simpler. Emperors in those days were fat and thus being fat equalled importance. To show that the Buddha and his Teaching were even more important than the emperor they depicted even the Bodhisatta as fat.
It's interesting how in East Asia, buddhas and bodhisattvas are usually pretty thick. Budai was definitely more than average, which is why he is also seen as a patron of businesses for his abundance.
It is the imagination of some painter or sculpture. Take today's statues of Buddha. Some have a lotus bud on its head, some have long earlobes, like those of Indian Brahamins, Some have a POTTU. Why waste valuable time and energy to solve fancy fiction/ If you have nothing to do, please do not waste others time
+Gardiarachchi Sirimal What is it that you were trying to share with us? We do not understand you. Please explain clearly. Thanks. You said ti was an imagination of some painters or sculptors. Don't you ever heard that some folks can see the image of Buddhas, the bodily appearance image of the Buddhas, and they ask the painters to paint those images, and over the years, the painters just re-copy the images over n over and become customarily..
