I am 55 and just starting to learn music. I am into drumming for past 3 months and loving it. I have looked at many videos to learn Carnatic music, but she is the one who can explain music for total beginners. I enjoy music, but have zero knowledge on swaras and raagas. I like the nice animations that she uses to explain the concepts. Loving it. Thank you Prathiba ji for these great videos.

I heard another story about Mayamalavagowla. As all these basic music exercises were developed by Purandaradasa, his reason for choosing this raga was it would be easy for a beginner to practice on the veena, because of the spacing of the frets, as he was a vainika himself

I loved this music for a long time and never knew it was so structured and precise. I always thought that the oscillations and slides were just artistic styling from each singer. I've a lot to learn on my Carnatic journey :). (Western drummer that is very interested in the rhythms of India)
@elborrador333
@elborrador333 3 года назад
The music is codified down to the microtones, the gamakas are anything but arbitrary. Maybe easier understanding what's happening on a fretted instrument like the veena rather than vocal music.
@1529jspartan
@1529jspartan 4 года назад
I know it has all three types of intervals, but I always believed that this Raga, emphasized the single semi-tones so much that made the the student start of with the harder aspects off the bat, if they did Shankara Barnum then this wouldn't have been available for them and they would have to get this skill later in their training. This is very unique across all other cultures, Purandara Dasa is truly amazing.

Yes.. Balaji Dasapaji Govindaraju- is right.. It is the DASAVARENYA Purandaradasa was the first to lay foundation for modern teaching of carnatic classical music. He with many experiments finally zerod on to Mayamalavagowla and set the famous PILLARI geete for beginners to learn. MADAM pls give credit to the great Music scientist PURANDARADASA

Awesome points. I did realise the symmetry but other points which you mentioned was eye opening to me. Another thing I felt is. In MMG, all notes come in adjacent pairs. SR GM PD NS Which might help a beginner focus on only two notes at a time to break it down to simpler chunks

I am fortunate enough to have got training in Hindustani music and also a little insight of Carnatic music. I have always had this question in mind, why Mayamalavagoula/Bhairav is the first raga we learn. Well, yes, we learn singing the notes and alankaras with all the Shuddha swaras, equivalent to Shankaravaranam but the raga we first learn is raga Bhairav (equivalent to Mayamalavagoula) in Hindustani music along with raga Yaman (only Madhyama is teevra). I guess all I'm trying to say is thanks a lot for this video. I've got the answer now and feeling so thrilled about it.

Wow!! That was a wonderful explanation! I love carnatic music though I have never had the opportunity to learn. But I keep hearing and enjoying songs everyday. Loved ur analysis and explanation. I often visualise a noise free atmosphere with this Ragam in the back ground.. for that matter many lovely raagas and enjoy the bliss. I think even for meditation RU-vid is flooded with so many. But just these ragas would be more than great to make one enjoy THE BLISS. Kudos to your efforts!
