I’m getting ready to rip up my entire yard and start over. We sprayed the clover that was growing and will begin cleaning up soon. I’m sending soil samples to NCState to find out what our soil needs. It used to be 80% moss until we had 4 trees cut about 3 years ago. Any advice you can offer will be appreciated!
I know this video is numerous years old, and would love to know how things are now with your lawn. What struck me most about your video, is how well you were mentally and spiritually handling your fungus woes. Your lawn looked horrible, and your home looked so beautiful, so I can completely imagine what a struggle it must have been to try and keep from plunging into turf depression. You kept yourself together very nicely. Well done. My new rhizomatous tall fescue lawn, that all my neighbors watched me carefully install and baby, has been completely decimated by fungus. It now in September looks like the whole thing was sprayed with roundup. And I have painstakingly gone organic with my lawn soil for years. Compost, composted manure, John & Bob's terribly overpriced fertilizer, Tiger sulfur, kelp, humid acid; get the picture. Absolutely sickening. Thought I needed therapy in the beginning. Now I'm just trying to recover. My ph is very high, will just keep plugging away at that. Fungicides are not an option for me.
@@Dan4052 the lawn is okay. I've stopped trying to keep it looking nice throughout the summer because I don't feel like spending the money on the water and fungicides. I've been keeping minimal water to it and letting it go dormant and it recovers to some degree in the fall. I'm gradually transitioning my lawn to Bermuda now. Thanks for the support and watching my videos.
And here I thought my fungus was bad, this is making me feel better. Yup, thhe more I'm learning, like life, the less I know haha Glad you got it worked out!
Hi! I posted a comment on one of your video today and I talked about possible fungus disease. After I replied to your comment, I saw you had this video! this is very similar to what's happening to my lawn too. Thank you for posting this video:) 😃
looking forward to the update. The same at my lawn. Neighbors always comment about my great lawn, now I'm among them and still trying fungus. I had select large patches so I scalped those spots.
That’s true...”It’s just grass...it will come back.” Keep the positive attitude and continue your efforts, and know that it won’t last forever...even though it may seem as such.
We are all #lawnbros and when you and your lawn are suffering, we are also suffering. Rest assured, “The Great Lawn Comeback” will take place and we look forward to seeing it greener, healthier and stronger than ever my friend!!!
Much appreciated, JC. I've got a long road ahead of me with a lot of work but it'll be neat to learn and document the process. Thanks for watching and supporting me as always!
Having the same problem with my bermuda grass, having grayish white spots kills the plant and runners in that particular area. Used propiconazole, finger, and biofingicide still fighting a losing battle. I feel your pain. Hang in there.
Manure Happens and it happened to me last year. The experts said it was a perfect combination of everything. Too little and then too much watering. Heat and sun. Another thought was I created a micro climate in my back yard because of the heavy landscaping with tree and shrubs. Did an aeration and reseeding and GREEN came back this year. Have been putting down a fungicide every month this year. "They" said when you see fungus damage, it's already too late. Like you said "It's just grass." There is always the fall renewal period and now you have a project.
It's been a bit of a struggle in this new lawn but I'll get it turned around. I has actually started to show some signs of improvement even during summer, so I'm optimistic.
Thanks for posting this Ben. Tackling issues and problems in the lawn is what is valuable information on RU-vid. Guys just showing off green grass and not having any problems? Meh.
Oh My! Gotta give you credit being upbeat. I, truthfully, don't know how I would handle that. Great attitude, though. Your absolutely correct, its just grass, but it hurts when all your hard work goes down the tubes. Wishing you brighter days ahead. Fantastic channel!
Thank very much! I also have to remember this is my first season in the new lawn so I'm learning a lot as I go. I appreciate you watching and supporting my channel! Have a fantastic 4th of July weekend!
Just as I was talking with the family about the lawn and the heat stress the skies opened up and rained!! Yay! We even have irrigation in the lawn but rain is far better
On the plus side your going to come out of this with so much more lawn care knowledge and if it starts to happen again your going to be able to correct it before it gets to bad👍
This is sad, I watched your video with Matt and your lawn was beautiful at that time. I realize this video is almost a year old but I ran into something similar just within the last few weeks here in Houston. I had pushed my lawn (St Augustine) beginning in April, it was looking thick, lush, and green. Around the middle of May we had 11 days of heavy rain. That's when the "Take All Root Rot" swept through my yard. Sections of the backyard are almost completely dead, the front yard fared much better....but it's still sweeping through my yard, it hasn't stopped yet. It's funny that the root rot stops right at the property line. I'm going to start applying fertilizer at greatly reduced rates to see if that reduces the risk of fungus and I'm going to fix my soil PH. It's currently around 7 to 7.2, it should be 6 to 6.5. Thanks for the video !!!
My PH is perfect but this year has been a nightmare. The heat and humidity roasted my lawn with fungus. I put down apps just like you but it was not enough. I'm going to start throwing down monthly starting in May.
I wish you the best with your lawn recovery. I just posted a new video on how my lawn is doing and what I've been doing to help it recover if you want to check it out! Thanks for watching!
I feel for you man! I have read that some trees make the soil alkaline. I wouldn't say drought causes fungus, but rather too much moisture. Fungus can be very hard to battle if you can't find the source, but I do agree if you make the soil healthy, it will successfully conquer any disease. Try watering with a soaker-hose which will keep the soil moist but the blades dry.
My guess is that the reason the area around the tree doesn't have the fungus problem is one of two things: Either A.) since the area is shaded, the turf doesn't get as stressed out as the other parts of your yard. or B.) that area has a lower pH due to the extra organic matter build up from years of leaves being mulched into the soil.
This guy said it!!! I have alkaline soil, and my home water is alkaline too. But just like you around the trees and some hedges the grass is darker green. You do know how grass cant absorb iron in alkaline soil? How do we solve this! Citric acid in the soil and foliar sprays of iron mixed with slightly acidic water?
Hey m8 🇦🇺 here I’ve got a similar to even worse problem here in qld aus It has me depressed and cheers for this vid It will grow back My turf if a Zeon zoysia and the last disease took 12 to 18 months to fully recover Just found your channel I will have to see how your journey panned out🤙
Tree shade may be helping with heat stress. I had some bad spots like that , I just fed the lawn some good N and watered during the heat and it is looking much better. There are still some spots though, I will be Overseeding in the fall.
That sucks! I've been battling fungus as well. I think I caught my first 2 rounds of fungus earlier though, so I'm not showing that much damage. Hopefully things will still green up a bit.
Hey Ben, I told you that I'm dealing with brown patch. I did all the preventative apps before our hot, humid weather hit. Still didn't prevent it! It shows Mother Nature runs the show. I was wondering if its something in my soil causing it to have outbreaks 2 years in a row? I think my PH was a little over 7? Who knows? I don't have the resources you do so I will follow you and learn something. If course, the weather here has been wet, high humidity, high dew points, and temperatures. Everything against us. Good luck!
Yeah I wish I knew how to help but I think every case can be a bit different as to why it happens. Good luck with your lawn and be sure to keep everyone updated.
I'm dealing with some of the same issues, either brown patch or heat stress or a combination. I sent a sample to Purdue lab. My lawn was looking really great, very good lawn of tall fescue, and bam, all of a sudden it went south. Purdue University has some very helpful info and I will link it. Good luck! turf.purdue.edu/turf-tips/
I feel your pain. Our lawn looked fantastic last fall but this spring it kind of looks really bad. Although it has improved slightly since early spring. I think I have a fungus spot in the very center of the front. May be necrotic ring spot, but I don't know for sure. thinking of throwing some humic acid on it and the rest of a bag of fungicide to see if that helps. I'm sure your lawn has gotten better since this video is 2 years old.
It’s October and two months later now. How does the lawn look at this point? I wonder if the ph level changes under those trees and thus no fungus there. I have similar problems
The lawn has recovered really well! Here the video I posted 2 weeks ago after overseeding. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n6A7w5eQGHc.html Also, here's how the lawn recovered prior to the overseeding. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R-2ZXm-L1UI.html Thank you for your support!
Xzemplar is by far the best fungicide for dollar spot. It's also very good for Brown patch. That and Azoxystrobin are great rotational products. You should rotate between the two after each application to avoid resistance. You could also rotate in Propiconazole every now and then, but never apply that during temps above 85 or it could damage the grass. The Xzemplar is more expensive, $150, but comes with enough to treat an acre so it will last several years if only treating 6000-7000 square feet.
I know how you feel. We've been seeing our lawn go to crap for the past FIVE YEARS!! We start seeing signs in mid June, and it progressly gets worse in July and August. It could be from our streetline tree surface roots, or it can be a fungas. I'm not sure what it is, but we our soil test results last October came back low on pottssuim. I went out and bought a pottssuim product due to the fact miloganite doesn't have pottasuim. I also bought a dethatcher. I said to myself this is the machine that is going put my lawn back to lawn dominance. NOT!! IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP ONCE AGAIN!! I'm thinking about roto tillering and starting from scratch or applying a second dose of fungicide. I'm lost!
I hope you can get it figured out. I know it can be rather frustrating. There are many professional in this lawn care community on RU-vid that I'm sure could help you way more than I could. I am by no mean a professional. Just a DIYer that enjoys taking care of the lawn. Good luck! I'm sure you'll get that lawn turned around!
I work my rear off to get my lawn looking great, and it was looking really good, and around mid June to July, I started getting brown areas, and it went south fast. Now it looks like crap. I'm sending a sample to Purdue lab,. I'm raking, ordered some better quality tall fescue seed from Super Seed Store, enough for my front yard anyway. And in a few weeks I will aerate and over seed, again. Good luck!
I feel for you Ben. At least you know the big guns that can guide you as to what to do. I'll keep watching and learning from you. Happy 4th to you and your family Ben.🇺🇲🦅
Yeah they have been I huge help in directing me in the right direction. It's all about damage control now and come Fall it's time to get to work! Thanks for watching and supporting as always!
Yes. Here the initial recovery video from last year ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R-2ZXm-L1UI.html and here's a video I did this year with Matt where he explains the process of what I've been doing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cKHmtT1_pyw.html Thank you for the support!
I see this is a year old video..this summer 2021 same thing happened to me on my big yard. But on top of all this the graboids moved in(gophers). Ever one would say my yard is better then a park or golf course. Really makes your heart sink and not a joy to mow for sure.. I read somewhere fungus loves nitrogen and humidity on grass. Make sense water to much in 110 degrees the water in soild be like a steam bath for fungus which they love. I read also fungus when you mow over it hitches a ride under your mower deck and it's spred.. Mine started in back now in the front so sure it hitched a ride under mower.. good luck fellow lawn nuts and hang in there...sure by early fall a cool down will help things..god bless
I know what your be going thru. I'm dealing with something similar, I'm not sure if it's brown patch, heat stress, or a combination. I'm sending a sample to Purdue lab to help me figure it out. My lawn looked great early in the year, and maybe mid June to early July it went south fast, I mean very fast. My mail lady even commented, " what happened to your pretty green grass?" I live in the Midwest and have tall fescue. Good luck and keep us updated. Thanks, John
Yeah this all happened pretty fast. The struggle in the Midwest is real. You'll for sure get the right info you need from Purdue! Good luck with your lawn and thank you for watching! and supporting my channel.
Ahh.. Mother Nature.. most times she hits hard..!! Oh.. I had an apple tree 🌳 That I purchased… that came complete with afid nest in the root system.. once I discovered I removed the nest.. and so far.. 🤞 no afids… but yeah.. don’t think the tree/trees that you purchased may have come.. And brought the problem with the tree…..
Yeah, I had a feeling it was going to be bad in this yard before summer hit and thought I'd be good with just Disease X. This new lawn is teaching me a lot.
Ben, what were the products that you used to fight the fungus? I didn't see them in the links. I'm specifically looking for a fungicide that deals with gray leaf spot, and brown patch.I enjoy your lawn video's, thanks. John
Hey John! I used propiconazole. Sorry I didn't mention it in this video. I mentioned it in the video after this one where I show how the lawn recovered. www.domyown.com/propiconazole-143-p-16567.html Thanks for the support and watching my videos!
It's all good. It's recovered really well. Here's the recovery video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R-2ZXm-L1UI.html Be sure to take a look at my most recent video and you can see how it's looking now. Thank you for your support!
Man... Sorry 😐 to see this happen to you, but the good thing is that you have some very knowledgeable guys helping you, stay motivated and I know that you’ll get your lawn look it’s best soon 👍🏾
Thanks, bro. It's hard to look at but at the end of the day it's a learning opportunity for me and it'll be a bit satisfying to turn the puppy around. Thanks for watching and have a great holiday weekend!
I used propiconazole. Here's the video I posted after this one to show how it recovered and what all I had been doing in the lawn. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R-2ZXm-L1UI.html
Well I was gonna offer some tips, but since you said you talked to Matt Martin and Allyn Hayne, your lawn should be good to go. Get ready for some green grass 👍Great video by the way 💯
What happens to your yard if you do nothing? I've told my neighbor to treat but he just continues to mow his yard extremely low and it's very yellow and brown. Can this kill the grass. I'm on my 3rd treatment it looks like I need to do one more. I'm going to do granular next time.
But I'm confused 🤔 if you overseed then you have to keep watering the lawn continually so the seeds germinate for to long. Then doesn't overwatering cause fungus on your lawn? I need to overseed but I'm afraid of my lawn getting fungus because of overwatering 🤯
I overseeded in the fall not the summer. Overseeding in the summer is generally not a good idea due to the heat and for the exact reason you mention with watering. You won't have the same fungus problems in the fall.
Great content!!! I feel for ya man, putting all the time and effort in and having something wipe it out and take out the joy but it's all about the battle to get back to dominating!!!
Yeah. Continued use of elemental sulfur and starting to to use citric acid. I'll be doing videos on that later. This was more of just a video on the state of my lawn. Thanks for watching! Have a great holiday weekend!
Thank you for letting me know I'm not alone. I just had tall fescue sod laid May 2 for the first time. So excited about my new lawn and it was doing great. Fast forward to July 5 and it started turning brown in spots. Now it looks just like yours. I'm so disheartened by this. This is my first time having a yard with grass. I have a company coming out to look at it and give me diagnosis. Hopefully by fall it will be looking great again. You have given me hope.
Good luck with your lawn. It can be discouraging at times but the lawns will recover with a little hard work and when the weather conditions are favorable. I wish you the best on your lawn. Thank you for your support!
The trees are definitely helping some how. To what extent and the science behind it is beyond me. Kinda like how certain plants and grasses cannot grow under Walnut trees.
@@TheLawnGuardian I am seeing a similar problem in my lawn and also see the shaded areas continuing to thrive without fungus. My hypothesis is that during the heat of the day, the soil temperatures in the sunny areas are climbing to an optimum temperature for fungus to grow and with the humidity and moisture staying in these areas at night the fungus goes wild. I actually stopped watering for 2 weeks straight although we did get a large amount of rain. I am slowly seeing some recovery without adding fungicide. Although I will be treating a couple of weeks prior to dethatching, aerating and overseeding in the fall.
I am so sorry to see this happening to you. I have never seen a fungus infestation as bad as what you have. I'm curious to know what your surrounding neighbors yards look like. I would lend you my Swardman Electra to help to get some of that dead grass out. Im in Utah..... that would be a long drive to your neck of the woods.
I've small amounts of this in my neighbors lawn but nothing to this extent, which I find interesting. I would love to borrow that Swardman for my fall dethatching but I get the whole long drive thing. lol! Maybe I can get Ryan Knorr to come bring his down. Thanks for watching and you support! Have a great 4th of July weekend!
The fungicide will be propiconazole to combat the fungus and for the pH it's going to be a combination of citric acid, elemental sulfur, ammonium sulfate. I'll be doing a video on this in the future. This particular video was intended to be more of an update. Thanks for watching!
LOL! I told you it was bad. Thanks for watching, Ben. I want top dress this Fall but can't imagine doing that by hand with a shovel. I wish I had access to one of those fancy topdressing machines you got to use a while back.
Like it! Here’s a question I fight these problems with Ken Blue all summer long..$$$$ In Chicago My lawn never looked bluer and full and healthy and we’ve had nothing but 45-60 degrees for about a month! Why plant this type if it can’t survive the summer heat???? Don’t get it. All the charts tell you KENBLUE is perfect for this area. HOGWASH!
I'm wondering if N-ext products that contain Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) are responsible to further increase your PH, can you check with John Perry or Matt Martin on this ?
Great question! This wouldn't have been the cause for the pH problem in my lawn since I had just moved into this house. I have heard humic acids don't do a lot in soils with a high pH. In relation to your question, I would guess that there isn't enough of a concentration of KOH in these products to have a noticeable impact on pH. This would be a good question for JP or Matt Martin though. Thanks for watching!
I used propiconazole to help control the fungus. Here's a follow up video I did after this video where I talk about more of what I did as well as show how the lawn recovered. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R-2ZXm-L1UI.html
You will see lesions on the leaf blades of the grass if it's fungus. Heat stress, the leaf blades will fold in on themselves and initially look more needle like and have a dull green appearance and then begin to turn brown because it's going dormant. Here's a link that I think can help. www.thelawnforum.com/threads/heat-stress-or-fungus.4043/ It's also a great resource to find helpful information in the future.
Here's a video where I talk about what I used to cure the fungus along with the results. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R-2ZXm-L1UI.html And here's the video where I talk more about the specifics of what I used and why to help lower my soil pH. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cKHmtT1_pyw.html Thank you for watching and for the support!
It'll be nice to see it all recover. I'm already starting to see signs of improvement so I know I'll be able to help it recover even more this Fall. It should be fun! Thanks for watching!
Been working mine like you didn.t know had to lwmearn just spray BicoAdvanc and Sotts fungus granules two different fungus killers reseed coming in September hoping to call it good been hitting with Jonathan Love your soil and Milogranite and high grade shade bend grass seed out of Utah Naturesseed Company great seed Fine Fescue.
I'm using a combination of citric acid, elemental sulfur, and fertilizing with ammonium sulfate to all help with the high pH. I'll be doing a video very soon on what I've done over the month of July and will continue to do in August. Thank you for watching!
@@tdhoeffel I live next to a Rural King where I was able to get a sprayable AMS. See if you have a AG or Turf Management store near by. You'll generally find some there.
Do what I did, lay down Astroturf… maintenance free. Todays Astroturf looks so real. It’s worth every penny. No more mowing, no more fertilizing, and your neighbors will never know it’s fake grass.
It's going to be a combination of things with elemental sulfur and citric acid. I'll do a video on that in the future. I mainly wanted to show everyone the state of my lawn. Thank you for watching!
