Why is my Steam Iron Leaking Brown Water?
Everyone gets this problem after some time.
One day the iron just starts shooting out brown or white stuff when you are ironing. Usually mixed in with water.
In this video I take apart my iron to show you what causes this and 2 quick checks you can do to find out if you can fix it.

My iron had massive rust flakes come out and rust water. I used water/vinegar a few times until it was clear but now there’s more rust flakes so it’s soaking upside down now. This video was helpful.

Very informative, I would never of imagined that there could be so much rust inside an iron! Very helpful, I’ll carry out your checks now, thank you 👍😀

Superbly presented, thank you. Recited as if Shakespeare. Question: Why are the screws not plastic or some aluminun or of some design or material to avoid this banal and ruinous problem? Is there an iron made with different screws?

Your video was helpful, very helpful! Thank you! I wish you had posted a video following the one showing how to take your iron apart with a video showing how to put it back together.

After an amateur takes apart a hand-operated mains AC appliance, it's not safe to put it back together and use it, especially if he finds that water has been getting onto live parts like the heating element. What you saw was a post-mortem, not exploratory surgery.

Spraying water through the sole plate is not something that you can do safely for a long time, since it seems to be difficult to keep water and steel, even live electrics, apart. Maybe the answer for longevity is to go back to using a plain hot iron and a wet sponge or towel.

This has to be a send up! Who is ever going to re-assemble this iron? If I get rid of the rust the iron will never go back together anyway. I’m off to buy a new iron. Thanks anyway.

Irons have a lifespan of only several years give or take a year. Best to spend $50 and get a new one. Unfortunately products are made for obsolescence... for the avg person your repair tutorial is not feasible.

You're probably right. Irons aren't made to last a long time, so you may as well buy a cheap one and replace it after a few years.

Thanks.... wow... I will never buy a Breville or any other cheap plastic Chinese-made iron. Shame on them! I own an old Rowenta Professional Model DX8860. The Farmhouse (from Container Store) brand new ironing board cover treated with soil-release and water-repellent finishes ended up melting on my inox soleplate which started my problems! Dritz hot iron cleaner seemed to make it all worse!!! Now the soleplate is scratched and brown (ditto for around the edge of the soleplate). I found your video by googling brown scratches and rust around iron soleplate. Even the more expensive older irons have problems and are cheap Chinese handiwork. Time for a new iron... but I do not trust ANY of them!
