Why is Northern Ireland Obsessed with the Colour Orange?

You might have noticed that certain groups of people in Northern Ireland really enjoy the colour orange - and this is for good reason, although of course I'm biased! Lots of history in this one so I hope you enjoy!

Brought my Dutch girlfriend to Derry, discovered the whole Dutch King thing and her entire world view shattered as she could not wrap her head around why they liked a Dutch king more fanatically than the Dutch like the modern Dutch royals!

Well it was pretty obvious which neighbourhood I was in given the huge mural of William of Orange on the wall, and the presence of the Northern Irish, English and British flags on every lamppost as opposed to murals of Bobby Sands, Irish slogans and Republican flags in the other area so I think if you believe there's no divide in Belfast you're wilfully blind to it mate.

Williamites coming to America is where we get out 'Hillbillies' from. They were originally called 'Billy boys', and being Scots-Irish and not much desired by the predominently English ancestors in America, got booted into the Appalachian mountains... Becoming 'Bills of the Hills', or Hillbillies.

you could have gone into more detail, the little known but cool fact I like is that the Netherlands Oranges originally come from the tiny French principality of Orange. A significant place in Roman times but by the 2nd millenium quite small and rubbish.... but still a pricipality so officially a lot more impressive than the Dutch counties where they had most of their power

I think presenters try make short videos, to keep the younger audience interested. There’s always more depth and detail, but weighed against time = a smaller audience. I think the author should be commended for what he did put together (other than James II), and hopefully makes the viewer interested in researching more. Few viewers understand how much time goes into researching, script writing, filming, and editing, before posting, which can be several days for 20 minutes, which is why I don’t have time to make videos unfortunately. I hope that helps with future understanding.

Intriguing video. A little additional information. King William won the battle of the boyne on 1st July 1690. 1690 is a curious year. Because, the then Pope, Pope Gregory XIII had decreed that the calendar was wrong by 11 days. That's why, we have a Mini twelfth on the 1st of July. Yet celebrate the battle of the boyne on the 12th of July. You see, Pope Gregory was in dispute with King James ll about who was top dog in the Catholic Church. King James version was a monarchy version. So, by defeating King James ll, the Holy Catholic Church was given a free pass in Ireland. Plus, the Pope did pay the wages of King William III's army. Once again, intriguing video.

I enjoy your videos and have learned and have been entertained. But when you make such a basic flaw with James the first and James the second, it makes me question he credibility of your other videos and if what I am viewing is correct. I have often thought other viewers were being pedantic when they criticize your placement of towns on maps. But this is basic stuff, its almost like referring to King Henry the 8th as King Henry the 7th. You should consider taking this video down and correcting it Hilbert.

You got the wrong James there. James I/VI oversaw the plantation of Ulster. It was his grandson James II/VII who was deposed by William III & Mary II. you left out his wife Mary who was James' daughter and the only reason William had any claim to the throne. Also William was initially offered consort and to rule through his wife behind the scenes but refused to accept a position below his wife so they were jointly crowned king and queen (the only such example in British history). Orange is also not the only colour associated with the Glorious Revolution. The Apprentice Boys of Derry wear crimson which comes from a flag used by the Williamite defenders of Londonderry in the siege of 1688 (local legend saying the crimson colour on the flag came from it being stained with blood).

James the First a closet Catholic? James the Second surely? James the First was so anti-Catholic that Guy Fawkes tried to blow him up.

James II did muster the standing army at Salisbury (one of the points of contention, that standing army) and attempted to halt William, James' regiments began to desert him, and when members of James' own household began to switch to William, James panicked and fled. James was a sh!te king, combining the worst traits of his father and grandfather. Also, William held the hereditary title "Prince of Orange", a small principality that had been seized by Louis XVI of France. It was the Orange dignity that made it acceptable William might marry an English princess (Mary).

Not much hope for this Hilbert guy if he can't differentiate between a protestant James I and a catholic James II. William of Orange was invited to Britain to become king. This was the Glorious Revolution which is crucial to the development of parliamentary democracy in the UK. For God and Ulster!

I see it’s already covered that it’s James II not his grandfather James I that was involved in the losing end of the Glorious Revolution , but also James II was quite openly Catholic by the time he ascended the throne. His longer reigning older brother Charles II was the closet Catholic.

Most people in Britain were Catholics until they converted to some form or other of Protestantism after the reformation. So , probably most of todays Protestants are descendants of 1500/1600 time period Catholics .
