Richard ‘Lion Heart’ ruled in England from 3 September 1189 - 6 April 1199 A military leader, courageous, chivalrous, and noble. Basically All the things Lions came to symbolize.
It is said he gained this name during his years as Duke of Aquitaine when he made a name for himself quelling unrest in his dukedom. Likely it is said he was named by the French, Richard "Coeur de Lion" which eventually turned into the English Lionheart. So even before he was King, Richard had gained this nickname.
