Why is support for Ukraine waning among eastern Europeans? | DW News

Early on in the Ukraine war, many Europeans were enthusiastic about supporting Ukraine and taking in refugees. But nine months in, that enthusiasm is waning, as food and energy costs are rising. A new study shows that just 40 percent of Europeans are in favor of supporting Ukraine, regardless of the price. Roughly the same number think support should be restricted. Germany has welcomed over a million Ukrainians, and many are still living with people who opened their doors to them at the start of the war.

Title says "eastern" but the speaker only mentions Hungary and Czech republic. Isn't this a too vague generalization? If you've interpreted the survey results to represent Eastern EU countries (which are quite different from one another), then why not generalize the result to all EU countries?! It's not like France or Germany are so different and don't have a percentage of their population complaining about energy prices.

The choice is stark. Europe either hangs together for the long haul to fight for the values it says it believes in, and for which Ukraine is fighting and dying for every single day; or Europe gives way to Russian hegemony threatening its borders, coming closer to European homes. You must have some technology that could solve our problem. Klaatu : Your problem is not technology. The problem is you. You lack the will to change. Professor Barnhardt : Then help us change. Klaatu : I cannot change your nature. You treat the world as you treat each other. Professor Barnhardt : But every civilization reaches a crisis point eventually. Klaatu : Most of them don't make it. Professor Barnhardt : Yours did. How? Klaatu : Our sun was dying. We had to evolve in order to survive. Professor Barnhardt : So it was only when your world was threated with destruction that you became what you are now. Klaatu : Yes. Professor Barnhardt : Well that's where we are. You say we're on the brink of destruction and you're right. But it's only on the brink that people find the will to change. Only at the precipice do we evolve. This is our moment. The best way to support longterm Russian aims at this point in the struggle in Ukraine is to argue for negotiations. If accompanied by a ceasefire they would only serve to give Russia time to reequip, and to demoralise the Ukrainian armed forces. Ukrainians mostly feel that with enough western aid they can get the occupied parts of their country back - why should they be pressured to negotiate? They didn't invade Russia.

To point out this again: this is not a war of Russia against Ukraine. It is the military physical assault of a dictatorship against people who want to live in a democracy. Every dictator believes in > whipping < people to be for, with, or under - them. And every democracy - even the very difficult ones with fatal 'illnesses' - declare and often sign legally in the human rights act: ''You can think, speak, do, what and how you want it, - ->> as long as you let everybody else have that freedom too. ( this the challenge for good, and the declaration of democracy and human rights in one). We know there is not place with big failure along. But in any democracy you as an individual you are still aloud to be angry, curse the government, explain your points - and regardless you are overall more safe and civil rights protected on that level than in any Dictatorship. Science also knows that Dictatorships are 'concepts' of 'taking' - revenge ideologies - that will always inevitably end with who can be found to revenge on. and dictatorships end with the end of what can be taken, because the targets are dead mor because the targets fight back. While democracies at least aim at 'making', communication before regulation, and that people shall have some appreciation to create after their own ideas. Short: people losing their lives in Ukraine do this for the better life they would have in a democracy, than the life-threatening existence in a dictatorship - like the current russian dictator. Dictatorships hate 'the west', hate they can not whip everybody to be under their control, where they could keep whipping them as they please, as all dictators evidently do, they so many people rather live in an imperfect difficult 'west' where their lives are still or safe and respected than under the declared dictators on this planet. Ukraine is not at war with Russia - and 'we' could or could not help, or there could be any negotiation that would end the particular war before the dictator's military act is completely expelled from what they invaded - Ukraine is not at war with Russia: Russia is openly attacking a democracy, and the democracy refuses to live under dictatorship. Ukraine is at the very front of this global showdown, the people of Iran for example are there two - all those people losing their lives to live in a more respected safe context like in a democracy. That is why this is not Ukraine's war - far away - but the war of each of us, who don't want to live a threatened life in a dictatorship. This conflict will not end into a better future unless the dictator is being shown he does not get a single inch in what he is doing, fully expelled from the neighbourhood nation, and it is not an attack on Ukraine, it is an attack on all of us on this planet. It's this time at this point where humanity needs to come clear how they think they are able to live here on this planet, and dictatorships against democratic orientated people in the world is the place of current war. Ukraine people, and others like people in Iran, are in the horrific situation to have to die for this every single day now. It is our war. We must do all we believe to believe in - and not dither, talking about 'negotiations', like about Crimea. There are negotiations if it is about saving life. This dictator has won if he can keep Crimea, and the 'west' has lost if he can keep any single inch of this country - and the next war with a dictatorship is due. In every news feature seem to be people again, who seem to be not fully clear about this, when they seem to include the option of negotiations. There are no negotiations. This not a film or a journalistic discussion feature. How many times does this need to be reminded of again? // Or are we wrong? If so: explain.

They have displaced elected officials at Biden’s say so. Are trying to effect US regime change and nato expansion. Like all civilians they are ruled by corrupt politicians and so called business people. Their elite have left the country leaving mostly the poor to suffer.

Most people treat this war like a sports game or an election "Oh I support this team", "I support this party", "I support Ukraine". But support in the form of votes and likes and retweets don't win wars. If you ask people whether they support Ukraine, most will say yes, but if you ask them whether their government should raise taxes and use those money to help Ukraine most will say no. In reality, donating 10 Euros and tweeting about it is the extent of most people's support. And in that sense, most people don't support Ukraine at all.

Sorry, but where have you got your data about the Czech republic from?? As we have given 467.000 Visas, the highest amount in EU per capita, as we have 10,5 Million citizens only.. All kids are enrolled in schools, more than 80% of the adults are employed, we have given about 2,1 Billion Euros military support to this day, there are trainings of thousands UA soldiers, there are about 4000 UA experts into the czech military companies in the next few weeks coming, we are supplying them electricity and heat generators and so much more.. Are you reffering to the protest from September which demanded stop to all aid and direct talks with Russia over gas supplies?? As there were about 70.000 protesters, which makes not even 0,7% of the Czech population...

Compared to what was spend on corona support, or even just energy support in Germany, the support given to Ukraine by Western EU countries is still quite small. The biggest impact is from increasing energy costs.
@user-zt4zr7eg6z
@user-zt4zr7eg6z Год назад
And its the biggest mistake. The West didnt supported Ukraine that much. A 100- 200 bln defense package would be another thing. And than we could end the conflict and exploit Ukrainian energy and resources. Also the EU should be already funding 100% renewable energy. Its just too slow.

If Ukraine is going to strike Russia deep in Russian Territory... Than I am also having second thoughts about me being FOR Ukraine. In the beginning I was very impressed by the Ukrainian resolve! Especially for showing solidarity towards captured Russian soldiers and wanting to give such captured Russian soldiers a second chance, many of which are now fighting FOR Ukraine instead! It was always about Ukraine to ONLY defend itself, NEVER to strike Russia deep inside Russia! But the latest war developments have been rather concerning. I Understand that they want to force Putin to the negotiation table... But striking Russia inside Russia??? I feel for the Ukrainian and Russian people who have to suffer at the hand of ONE crazy man and I hope and pray that this war will come to a conclusion soon!
