I do own a 1.8T B5 quattro, so I kinda began to like these engines a bit more. I always respected it and wondered what it would be like to own it. How many owners of the 1.8T are here?
Long time ago my friend had this car tuned to 240bhp. Not too much but it was enough to do ~5 sec to 100kmh. Best time was 5.00X measured professionaly. He used to kill e39 m5, s4 2.7 and many more cars in shorter drag races. Yours is stock?
B5 A4 (058) 1.8tqm preface lift here, currently building the motor with SCAT rods, AEB pistons, gt2860 bb, SPA t28 mani, 3" catless, water methanol injection, silver just like the first car in the vid.
Had a A4 1.8t for 5 years and 70000 km (160-230k). The car had modded downpipe, exhaust and injectors and made about 225 hp. Drove it like i stole it for the entire 70k km and the only thing that failed was some EVAP valves and a crank position sensor. Never missed a beat and did not leak a drop of oil. Awesome engines although a little weak in low RPM and not the best fuel economy considering its displacement.
Interesting. Compare this to a stock 1.8 litre 4 cyl 16 valve naturally aspirated engine in my celica, producing 192 hp and 180Nm of torque... Not that far off!
@@marko8659 Cannot be compared at all, it is a turbo. Take away that from your fiat and we will see then... Or if I installed a turbo on my Celica... Easy 300Nm...
It does not burn oil, or how much oil burns between oil changes? I want to buy this car with this engine but i read that they burn to much oil, it is true? Thank you!
My father's 98 passat, the very first car I ever drove and learnt to drive with, has this engine.Nearly 300k kms without any engine or transmission problems, still driving it and enjoying it!!
I've always steered away from euro cars. And then my neighbor was selling his a4 b5 1.8t manual quattro for dirt cheap. Did some research and fell in love with it. Now it's my daily cruiser
Worked on these engines for 15 years now, never encountered an engine issue in my life. Annoying plastics and vacuum system for sure, but the mechanicals are probably the best amongst german cars. Nice video
@@rudydaberry122 sorry, never thought about automatics. You are rolling the dice with every single automaker with that one. Not trying to sound condescending, just my experience with them😒
@@rudydaberry122 The 5Tip-Tronic has a 100% failure rate with Torque Converter for the 2.7T S4 at around 100,000 miles to 150,000 miles. With the A4 they have way less power and last allllloooottt longer. Most if not all cars over 100 - 150 have already or maybe not, had the converter replaced. I have a S4 with it, and its just fine, but someone has put a TCU tune and Heavy Duty Converter in it. I have 1 A4 thats a 97 Avant FWD with a Automatic, it has 283k on it. Also have 3 other A4s with 160k, 283k, 309k miles but they are all 5 speed. I also have a 05 A8 with 129k and thats the 6 speed tiptronic.
I had the 1.8 NA 125hp. in my Skoda Octavia h1. It was a perfect balance between horsepower and fuel economy for every day driving. Plus outstanding reliability. I've never had any issues with it. :)
Love my AWP 1.8T, going strong at 190,000 kms with no major issues. Been keeping up on its maintenance schedule, hope I can get as much life as possible out of it.
This is one of those all time industry changing engines. It should be remembered in the same class as Honda bseries. This engine single handedly started the entire chip tuning/remapping culture. Probably the most commonly remapped engine ever
Had my b6 1.8t with a 5 speed for a little over a year. She’s been great to me, a few issues but nothing to major. Getting ready to tune now since the maintenance is all done ko4 is installed, as well as high flow cat, bigger injectors, dv upgrade. Can’t wait to see what she does
I ended up getting crashed into and had to sell the car. If you live somewhere with lenient smog I’d suggest getting rid of the oem check valves and excess hoses. Plus turbo upgrades are easier to get away with if you want to go with a garret. Happy tuning everyone I now own a mk7 alltrack that will be fast soon
I had a B6 1.8T Quattro. Stock its bland although great in the Winter up here in Canada. But in the Summer I added a stage 1 tune and went catless exhaust and the difference in sound and torque was amazing. 16psi on stock diverter valve. These engines are Bulletproof and require minimal maintenance compared to other audi engines
Good review on the 1.8t 20v engine. Very very good solid engine for big turbo builds. A couple other things to note though…. The main caps on the crank tend to fail after around 600bhp so people now change them out for billet main caps. I’ve got an S3 8L with 642bhp and 516ft lbs on 99 Ron fuel with water meth injection. One of the highest powered S3’s here in the UK. Pretty much changed everything in the engine to make sure it’ll take it and more in future.
The AEB is an unsung hero. I had two in B5 A4TQ and they both kicked ass. One had a mild tune and the other with a GT28. They don't match today's 4 cylinders, but 20 years ago they were amazing!
1.8t for life lol. Ive done so much to mine and love it. Been running 25 psi through my k04 (yes im aware im overboosting it, shut up) and it feels great. Such a great platform to learn about tuning and engine modification.
Still driving my 2005 A4 B6 ultra sport. (Daily driver). Has 170,000 on it but I had tons of maintenance, upkeep on the car. You name it, it's been done to the car. Timeless style IMO. Still get compliments on it. Only mod is Unitronic stage one. Still love driving on it. Will drive it till the wheels fall off.
Nice, that's almost the same mileage as my 2005 A4 B6. I almost bought the Ultrasport (I looked at a Blue one), but the suspension was too low to go down my steep driveway without bottoming out. As a result, mine has the stock suspension with the optional 5-spoke 17" wheels. Mine is completely stock, and was my daily for 13 years. I just drive it for fun these days.
I have an Audi S3 8l, 120000 miles brilliant engine, very quiet at idle and pulls all the way to 7k. I’d like to point out that nearly all engines will run forever if correctly maintained, but this will almost never happen because cars depreciate and fall into the hands of idiots who want a 6 month fling
I had a 97 A4 1.8t with just a tune. 190hp / 290nm, it was fun to drive and torquey but wasn't happy much past 5k rpm. The stock downpipe is a bad restriction.
Feeera motor AP - um clássico! Eu tenho esse 1.8 com um K04 no meu TT Quattro Roadster aqui nos Estados Unidos, e o motor dá mesmo uma sensação daqueles Volks de 1990.
I've had 2 GTIs in the past both with 1.8t's. One was an 01 and the other was an 03 with the k03s turbo that made 180hp from the factory. Full intake + downpipe exhaust and a remap gave it in the ballpark of 200+ whp. When you have a gutted MK4 with that much power, there's not many cars that could keep up with it 0-100, but it did run out of steam in the top end. Crazy thing is that both were extremely high mileage motors and still ran like dreams, one was at 275000km and the other at 335000km
Yeah finally my favored engine! :D Thanks for that! I had a Audi A4 1,8T BEX with 190 HP. VisioRacer allready mentioned the fals air intake-problem. This is really easy to fix, just lift the oil lid at running engine. If it sucks vacuum, then you have to replace the Kurbelwellengehäuse-Entlüftungsventil (Crankcase ventilation membrane) this part costs about 30 euro. Also very common are heatcracks in the exhaust manifold. They usually close trough heat extension after warming the engine up. Sry for the bad english^^
2002 AWP Owner here: these engines are bulletproof. My dad gave me his GTI when I turned 17, and as you can imagine it had a pretty hard life. Now, 12 years later, 332,000 miles and it still hasn’t died. That old GTI nowadays is a dune buggy with 30” mud tires. Run the proper synthetic oil, Change the timing belt every 100 K miles, and she’ll never die.
As a tech in their hay day only one thing caused sludge. That is a pcv system failure. The valve goes bad (hidden inside a hose) and leaks boost into the crank case vent. Taking all the sludge from the crank case and turbo charging it into the oil pan. This also caused oil leaks. Because you are turbocharging the crank case. This was made doubly worse because owners refused to pay the labors to properly fix the system.
Hi, I have 1.8T 132 KW AUQ, And i suspect this PCV is bad. Could that cause bad starting when cold? also pressure drop in intake? When the car gets warm everything is ok. No check engine light.
I've got a 2004 VW Passat Wagon 1.8T with the AWM code. I love 1.8's as I've had a variation in my 91' Escort GT 5-Speed and my Nissan Sentra Type E which was a 4 speed. I change my oil every 3k miles and currently use and love my NGK Iridium Plugs. Even after it sat 4 the entire winter 2 cranks and starts with ease. Very dependable motor that is still whisper quiet with 208k on it.
Got my 1.8t at 321000 km, and six years later @410000km I am, well, planning for an oil change next Monday. An absolute unit. I've been calling her Little Fury since day one.
Important information: The forged cranksahft is only in the AGU (golf 4 150hp ), BAM (audi s3), Audi TT. The other engines just have cast crankshafts. The cast crankshaft is good for 400hp .... it will hold 500- 600hp but not very long. The best 1.8t is the Agu Block. Its a 06A block it has stronger rods (forged 20mm wrist pin), and no electric vvt, the head has bigger ports (exhaust side). The agu engine is basicly the "strongest" 1.8t and holds up 2 300hp reliable.... with stock internals. If u want more horsepower in these engines, at least disasemble the head an get new exhaust valves (the stock valves can snap off if they are older). Great video 👍👍
there are issues on the 1.8t tho: turbos and headers like to crack, theyre consumables on those engines due to the head being a hot one. oil sludge that can block the oilintake from the pump, so you should be doing your oilchange atleast once a year or every 10k km. sometimes even the head can crack from valve to sparkplug hole, but thats rare. other than that, these cars are getting old so youll be needing to do lots of cooling hose replacement (nearly all on my 99tt bursted by now), some stuck theromstats here and there, some leaking cooling flanges. some leaking valvecovers and oilpans, other than that, if taken good care of they are pretty reliable. also they are huge differences between the 150 and 180hp engines to the 225/240hp engines. the higher power one feature double oil squirters for the pistons, dual intercoolers, a shorter and flipped intake, bigger turbo and bigger injectors. other than that great video, you covered a good amount of infos. much love from germany
I would like to add, that I've got mine A6 1.8t AJL 98', used with 120k and a suspicious clean engine and coolant... Of course the thermostat was stuck open with a blade from the water pump, but even after it got stuck closed and boiled over countless times, on way home, frying up the oil, I've got it cleaned and tuned and drove it like a hooligan, for another 5 years until "it broken down again", loosing coolant in seconds! The guy who bought it and fixed it for ridiculous little money, still drives it!!
@@fuse8052 ignition coils? if so, an upgrade to tfsi coils (red audi ones) should help. i did that with my tt. if you have the factory square ones that is
My dad has a 01' tt, I gotta say, even after 200k kms it rips like new. The things that have worn out are the convertible electric motor and the boot latch. Easily fixed. Had a misfire in one cylinder so we changed the spark plugs and good as new.
My first car was a 2001 audi tt coupe. I got it at 225k miles (360k km) and it still runs just as good. I have had to replace some of the plastics for the cooling system, thermostat, and some pcv, but other than that I had nothing major happen, engine wise. I put about 25k miles (~30k km) on it, and slowly restored it to the best of my ability. The only worst part of it was that it could only fit 2 people comfortably, and not haul much as it is a Quattro which had less trunk (boot) space than the fwd. Sadly I plan on selling it as I am going to college and I need something to haul my motorcycles, but it was the greatest car I have ever owned. If I could, I will not sell it as I love the car to much and I would love to pass it on to my children one day as their first car.
My old 1999 Audi A3 1.8T works great with a K04 turbocharger. I was today at the "Autobahn" and and I was the most time between 180km/h and 240km/h cruising. And my engine has run for over 270.000km yet
I tune those engines every week, they are definitely not the best or superior.. but they are a good, strong and a great start for beginner turbo enthusiasts!
Had an A3 with a chipped 190ish hp and currently a TT Quattro with the 225hp K04. Great little engines, but work better in higher revs. The K04 units also have twin Intercoolers I believe.
Had a 2001 A4 quattro b6 (AVJ) engine for almost 6 years, was remapped to 200bhp. Great engine hampered by crap vacuum system. As was mentioned oil sludge is the main route to failure with these so oil changes and using the larger oil filter is essential. Think I went through about 5 coil packs in my 6 years of ownership. Also had a crank hall effect sensor fail. Went through 2 water pumps also but didn't mind that as it was due a t belt anyhow. Eventually changed the car for a EA888 A4. Wish I could say the same for that engine.
Well... my US spec 1.8T had issues all over. Failing coil packs, cracked head, starter issues, failed intake hoses. The icing on the cake was a failed timing belt tensioner at 50k miles, just out of warranty. Valves collided with the pistons, destroyed the head. Good times!
What part of the US you lived in? The cracking head/turbo is mostly in hotter climates. I went through one 1.8T engine but it was because the previous owner didnt change the oil and it sludged up and killed the oil pump. The second engine i had for around 50k miles and it was faultless. Had some vac leaks but sorted that out and a dipstick tube that fell apart from age. All very easy and cheap fixes. I loved every minute owning it even with the first one loosing oil pressure which wasnt really the engines fault, more of the previous owners and the fact that I didn't notice
@@waifuracer6516 I had the car from new as a 97 model in Texas. Further issues came up when the head was replaced as the the shop reinstalled the turbo after it had been damaged while extracting a stripped bolt/stud. I didn’t include these issues as that’s a dealership problem not an engine issue. It got to be such drama!
@@KingAlmightyDee My B5 had the cracked head. May not have been common but it was enough for the coolant to pool in the spark plug well and crap out the coil pack.
Put an APX from recalled audi tt 225 into my vw corrado with the oem harness and DBW. Large front intercooler and larger exhaust plus a dyno tuned ecu, 312 whp and 308 ftlbs torque running on 102 octane. Mated to a 5 speed diesel box, it was an animal. Had to sell it when I moved countries
Stock they're a little bit boring. But with correct parts and a good tune, they run very well with a nice sound. Bulletproof if they're correctly maintained
Never had the 20V version, but I have owned three 1.8Ts all in Audi A4s. Love the power plant as it is refined, powerful and very reliable. My current A4 has now done over 150K miles from new. Max (my car) does drink a lot of oil these days.
I own a 2004 A4 Quattro B6 with a APR stage 1+ with 235 hp and 275 ft-lb of torque and I’ve never had a mechanical problem with it and even now with 167,000 miles, I’m about to upgrade the performance and this has been the most fun to drive and own vehicle I’ve bought, I will never sell it!
Do the F4R(T), started life as a heavily reworked Clio Williams F7R, went on to power some of the best hot hatches of all time, and is still in service today in the Dacia Sandero RS.
I used to have the A4 with this engine, it ran perfectly fine the whole time. Then I got a TT with the same engine, but slightly more powerful. For 11 years, it ran perfectly fine. I regret selling it every day.
@@KowalDWR I look at it this way: New Beetle is on the same platform, even carries the same engine, and that one I find more suited for women. TT is all oval-looking, but it's robust and not-so-easy to drive like for instance the A4.
@@KowalDWR I’m 20 and I have a TT honestly beautiful car and it makes you smile every time you fucking drive that shit and hear the turbo fucking sick I don’t give a shit what people think it’s awesome and you’ll fall in love with it at least that’s what happened to me
I wonder if u can modify a Honda VTEC cam to run on the intake side. That middle valve would get the VTEC lobe at all times. Just a random thought. But it wouldn't to far off. Also would be cheaper just to upgrade the original cam. But still.
My dad had an 03 Jetta 1.8T Wolfsburg Edition a while back. It’s a shame he got rid of it, it was a really nice car. Got good mileage and was pretty quick too.
Wow your prediction of 186,000 miles is pretty accurate, i had to replace my piston rings due to lost compression at 185k. It would've ran longer if the ebrake didn't fail and hop a curb and go swimming in a pond with a cracked oil pan. still made it 5k miles on a huge roadtrip and back before the rings seized.
I picked up an old 2000 Audi TT 225 off a friend about a year ago, engine is at 340k km and definitely has some problems but even here in NZ getting parts for it is a breeze, some after market 225 specific stuff is a pain but that's understandable. Love the engine though and can't wait to throw an intake and cat back on it so it sounds better
After my 1.8T Jetta wagon was rolled, I now have a 2004 Passat B5.5, with the tiptronic. My Turbo is still going strong after 158K. Also original alternator! Car has been super great to work on. Believe it or not when i got the car just over a year and a half ago it still had the original air filter! A true testament to how the car still went on strong. I also had a split PVC boot and faulty PVC. No idea how i did not blow a seal! Fitting a manual boost and oil pressure gage, and an oil catch can is a must for these cars! Still get up to 30 MPG's doing 80 MPH! Average 25 mpg's. I want to keep this car as long as possible, then I will go out and buy another!
Yamaha did -84 first 5 valve per cylinder engine. Audi did use 5 valve per cylinder first 200/5000 model -85 talladega race circuit passing 200mph even more on straights 350km/h.
Enjoying my 1.8t Cupra, mk1 Leon's are the best looking ones with 1.8t imo ;) pushing 221hp atm with 336nm of torque and honestly I think that's enough to satisfy me, coulda went with a cupra R and get 225 stock but...I didn't lol. used to be equal with my mate's Type R when doing rolling pulls now I'm leaving him behind even when giving a lead. Engine head rebuilt in October so 5 months ago and semi-refurbished the gearbox too we'll see how reliable it lasts at 90k miles now. Drove to Belgium from Scotland and back last month which was 2,000 mile round trip no problem. Only issues I had with the car was timing belt got chewed as previous owner never replaced the bolt for the engine mount when he polybushed, they're single use bolts so it snapped when I reversed it and the threaded bit fucked the belt up. Then had Cam position sensor fail on me, £20 and 10 minutes later that was fixed. And finally used to get 2 engine codes due to the decat, that got taken care of when remapping as it would come back if I'd just erase it. Trouble free for now ;)
Ive got a 1.8T BEX B6, straight pipe exhaust, refurbished turbo(ko3s) and a map and ive got 220bhp, 30+ from factory for my model. End goal is 350bhp, but thats bit later on when I do alot with the engine
Had a A3 1.8t with a S3 engine in it ( FWD tho) about 8 years ago. Was rapid but after examining chassis it had been crashed at some stage and repaired, nothing structural luckily. Was silly fast for what it was tho.
EA827 engine, also known as AP 1800, is one of the best engines Volkswagen brought to Brazil. Mostly aspirated, they're still running until today, because are very reliable and cheap. Unfortunately, the 1.8T are more expensive and most of them over here are scrapped.
Polo 9n3 GTI owner there.. I’m always surprised by its high response from both engine and steering. However, at the same time she’s got a lot of leakage from bad valve gasket cover, oil pan, water pump and its pipe and gasket between transmission and drive shaft… Owning her makes you feel like drifting between hell and heaven lol
I got the 1.9 alh tdi and the 1.8t's bigger brother, the 2.0t. Both very fun cars! Tdi has 350k miles and haven't had to do anything other than timing belts
I adored my 1.8Ts, they sound outrageous with a big open cone filter. They're a lot of fun when tuned and in a nicely modified car, and parts are everywhere. A new engine can be had for less than £200 in the UK if you take it too far with yours (rods are the main weak point). Mine were exceptionally reliable, but if you don't take good care of them you will run into trouble. Regular oil changes are a must, I did it every 6 months.
The durability numbers of 300k is pretty pesimistic i`d say. I had an a4 b5 with a 1.8t and the milage was 350k (pretty sure the original milage was higher as the car was 25 years old). Reliability was almost perfect even with some mods made
owning a b5 s4 that's making 500whp stock block for 2 years now, I can safely say this and the 2.7t are one of the best engines produced by Audi and in the world. They are reliable if you take care of them and do proper maintenance ( 191k miles on my 2.7t with 190psi compression). The 1.8t b5 is no slouch. With simple rods and exhaust valves and a bigger turbo with proper supporting mods you are looking at 500whp. With pistons, 700whp easily. As far as the 2.7t, rods and 2.8 intake cams with bigger turbos or a single turbo conversion makes 600-700 no problem with 1000whp capable
I got a '91 C4 Audi 100 2.8 quattro. I was thinking of getting an engine swap, since the engine doesn't really like forced induction and what not. Might consider this one.
I own 2003 passat B5,5 1.8 t 150 hp, awt engine code. 285000 kms, with automatic gearbox and runs for 200 kkm on lpg. Best engine! Also dad have 1.8 20v Non turbo with 400 kkms, 250 kkm on lpg. Still runs without engine rebuild and it is in pretty decent condition. 1.8 20v is my top of relability just after 1.9 tdi vp engine.
I own a 98 1.8 t going golf and everyone says her engine was one of the best agu ported head from factory the lot used to convert mks and many others due to it having a cable throttle not fly by wire
I'm actually selling my 2003 at 1.8t right now, so I thought it was funny seeing this now. Never gave me many problems but it just started having the ignition coil problems and I'm ready to move on.
I like the 2002-2005 1.8t engine, avj, bfb and bex engine codes. Ease to maintain and work on. I know these engine like the back of my hand. I even have a bex on the engine stand being built and avj in the car. With up upgraded cams.. she will sound beautiful.
5:35 stock internals are good for 300 CRANK HP with a off the shelf tune MAYBE you can get 350 CRANK hp with a master tuner on a dyno and NOT blow a rod but whats is possible and what should be done are different things issue with stock rods is TQ spikes early on in RPMS and if you can eliminate them i would safely go to 285 at the crank anything more is a risk
Miałem takiego 1.8 t apu Boże jak to zapierdalalo. Przejechałem pół miliona kilometrów a silnik nigdy mi się nie popsuł tylko sprzęgło nie wytrzymało 👍❤️
