I learned to fly in a Cessna 150 and after I gained my licence moved onto the 172. I just loved that bird. A friend used to fly with me and he often said that he never saw a bird with wings below its body so therefore had great trust in the high-wing Cessnas.

Got my license on a 152, many hours on it. It was cheaper to rent than a 172. Then one day I decided to try out the 172, just for fun. Never went back. The angle of those wings makes for such an incredibly smooth ride. Made the 152 feel like an old wooden rollercoaster compared to a Land Rover. Amazing aircraft, blessed to know these birds so well.

@@johntrevorroche-baines784 What? that has never been an issue with the pipers. Why are your students looking so close to the airplane during landing? Their issue wasn't lack of seeing the pavement next to and below them, it was being taught wrong where to look during landing. I know, I trained in them and was solo in 6hrs. Also got my tailwheel in 6hrs. Never had that issue. And I do nose-high landings, so high you can't see the runway over the nose. The problem is too many pilots these days don't know the art of landing, and I'm getting a stark reality check on that by sitting in on many tailwheel forums at Oshkosh each year and listening to all the supposedly experienced tailwheel pilots explain how little they really know about landing. And trike gear pilots overall are just as bad.

@@SoloRenegade Piper pa28 series ac have wing spar failures. Embry riddle crash. Wing fell right of turning upwind. Maybe all those hard landings had an eeffect. All that stress from the gear right to the wing. Not the case on the 172. In that case the 172 is a better trainer.

Hundreds and hundreds of hours in many models of the 172, Loved that plane. Did aerial photos, parachute dropping, mountain flying, short strips and many other awesome times.

My first airplane ride (in the early 60's) was a 172. I probably spent 300 hours in it (not flying it but as a passenger). I'm 71 and when I was a kid I remember some hometown elderly people talking about when CV Cessna flew his Jenny to Bucklin Kansas (my home town) and gave rides to the locals. Oh the stories! I didn't pursue flying as a career (big mistake) but I enjoy flying today. I've flown a 152, 172, 180, 210, and a 310. Oh and I've seen (I wouldn't reccommend this) a Mom, Dad and 5 young children climb out of a 172 at KDDC.

The Skyhawk is arguably the best airframe of any general aviation aircraft. It’s not a Mooney….or a Cirrus….but it offers excellent utility and serviceability at a competitive price point. It is a joy to fly and teach in and will hold up under the most demanding of circumstances (as in teaching primary students to land).

Best how? It is clunky, slow and useless for all but training. And even as a trainer it does not prepare pilots to fly much more cabable and modern aricraft, like the Cirrus.

@@speedomars3869 The cirrus is not a good trainer. they are too fast and unstable for new pilots. The Skyhawk is not clunky slow and useless. The average speed I can get out of the Skyhawks I fly is 110 knots which is comparable to the piper Cherokee series. You can throw a lot of fuel in the Skyhawk with 2 people and some baggage which is good enough for most people and you still get there in a reasonable time. I've flown a lot of different aircraft and always want to come back to the Cessna because they are the most stable aircraft I've flown, they are easy to fly, and they have great visibility in flight. The cirrus on the other hand is clunky. you have a side stick you have to use (already clunky). then you also need a parachute because the cirrus cant spin otherwise you'll need to pull the chute. most people who buy cirrus aircraft don't know what they have and usually get themselves in trouble because of it.

@@Blitzaviation You are incorrect on several points. The Cirrus SR20 is one of the best selling trainers on the market with an average of 150 built each year. The side-stick is easier to use and offers an unobstructed view of the instruments unlike the clunky yoke mounted in the center of the panel and blocking instruments. Cirrus certified spins in Europe but was not required to do the same in the US because the FAA accepted the chute as a stronger substitute than spin recovery. Still, all Cirrus aircraft can be spun and can be recovered from same no different than a Cessna or Piper. Cirrus owners fly the safest aircraft in the industry which explains why Cirrus sells more GA aircraft than all other makers combined. The Cessna 172 is slow, clunky and still very expensive for what get, a 100kt aircraft for half a million bucks. The older versions are often equipped with antiquated steam gauges and are far too slow and anemic to be flown cross country. They are a poor mans patch plane at best.

@@speedomars3869 You sound like most cirrus pilots. you think that they are they best when simply they are not. you are wrong again my guy with the sales. go look at the best selling aircraft and its still the 172. Every student I have talked to who has flown the cirrus cant handle the 140-150 knot speeds right away. have you not looked at older sr20 and 22s? they have steam gauges? do you even fly planes at all? if so you need to review steam gauge flying because they are not inadequate for anything. I can fly confidently solid fir on steam gauges. I didn't know a 120k to 500k plane is a poor mans plane? just because we all don't want a cirrus that cant haul anymore than a Skyhawk or skyline. Don't get me wrong cirrus is an ok aircraft for people who want to just throw money away. If you think a parachute is so much safer it isn't. the safest plane on the market is a DA-40.

Where I grew up there was a grass air field at the time one mile away and the owner had a Piper Cub that as soon as we left the ground he would let me fly when I was only about 15 years old. Within a year with no real flight training I was able to take off and land it. Then he bought a 172. Super simple to fly, loved it!

My first flight was in a Cessna170 and then trained in an Aeronca Champ. I had a hundred hours before I saw a tric aircraft.. Off all 42 aircraft I have flown the Cessna 150 and Falcon 20 were my favorites. The J3 and PA 18 were close seconds.

The position lights on the airplane on your title page are backwards. Red should be on the right when the plane is coming toward you. All pilots learn this early in their training. Red Right Returning... means if the red light is on the right, the plane is coming at you.

@@lomate1963 I was taught ‘Red, Right, Return’, by a really lousy flight instructor, whose first language, most certainly wasn’t English. Unfortunately, the first thing you are taught often sticks. I’m now an 18,000+ hr pilot with over 50 aircraft types in my log and hate the fact that that dumb phrase still pops into my head when I see nav lights at night. That’s why there should be harsh penalties for bad teaching 😆.

@@sklise1 😆I flew an instruction airplane for a while where an AMT had done just that. Another flight instructor, explaining NAV lights to a student on a night flight, was waiting for take off while we were on short final. He was the first to notice. The airplane had flown around like that for weeks.

I learned to fly in 152’s and 172’s. They will glide you safely to the ground if you lose power. The wings are above you so you can see below you. I took my first cross country in a Piper with the wings below and I couldn’t see where I was.

They glide no better or worse than any powered aircraft. In fact, they are heavier than light sport planes and so fall out of the sky much faster.

@@speedomars3869 They have a great glide ratio. They don’t drop. You can glide any Cessna easily to a nice landing with no power. I have done it several times.

@@kellycoleman715 Like I said, all powered aircraft have a glide ratio. The 172 is 9:1. A RANS S21 SLSA is 11:1. A Diamond DA20 (also used for training) is 14:1. The 172 drops out of the sky MUCH faster than the RANS (made of metal and is 30kts faster) or Diamond (all carbon fiber aircraft) for example.

@@speedomars3869 No kidding really they are heaver so that makes them unsafe. LSA aircraft mostly use rotax that are no way as reliable as a certified Lycoming. Cessna reliability is what makes them the Most desirable Aircraft in history. 44 thousand and climbing.

Me Pappy always thought me, "Any Landing you can walk away from is a good Landing!" Dad had Piper's version of the same plane, the tri-pacer. There is nothing like the freedom you feel bouncing around on the currents in an old canvas wing airplane!!

Many here say it’s easy to fly and that’s true. However if you aim to fly it precisely it can challenge anyone. Which makes it the perfect trainer and fun airplane to bounce around in for an hour or two.

We used a Cessna 172RG for research and strapped antennas to the struts to search for aplomado falcons that were fitted with tiny transmitters along the Texas coast! Great plane for sure and a lot of fun!

This is generating a lot of discussion so let's find some common ground; My original comment is from the point of view of a novice student pilot. I flew both the 172 and the PA28 during training and my personal preference was the Piper. It had a more stable feel to me in landings. My intent was to say I didn't experience any visibility problems flying it. Both are good airplanes. So much so that we're still talking about them 47 years after I got my license. And hey, Cessna drivers get their own exit door!

That 64 day flight record is amazing. We noticed once again that this record was done by civilian private enterprise, not by the government, just like the around the world unrefueled flight Accomplished by the Rutan brothers. I owned a 1978 C-172 some years ago , what can I say ! I got my license in it . Flew my family to short trips on holidays . In 1993 , I sold it to a plane broker in Waterloo , IW and he ferried the plane to Paris , France for a flying club . Miss my plane !

@@SoloRenegade I like the piper and have a lot of hours in a piper archer. However, the Cessna is way easier to get and out of and the landing gear is a little tougher for students learning. I also like the cessna’s larger cockpit which is why I went to a Cessna 182 after I got my license. I do fly a lot in a 310 now but that’s a whole different creature. I still love our 182!!

@@FBCStuttgart Yes, tougher can be better for students, as it better prepares them for still tougher planes. Yes, much easier to get in and out of, and doors on both sides. The Piper warrior cockpit is bigger than the 172 though, not even close. The C172 cockpit is like 4in narrower and it's very obvious to those inside. (a Cherokee 140 compares to a C150, not a 172 as people like to try to do). Yes, the 182 compares to the Piper Warrior cockpit. I love the 182 as well. 182RG is far faster than a fixed gear 182 though, but maintenance pigs, lots of gear failures. C310 is fun, but not something I'd ever chose to own, and has many of the same cockpit issues as the pipers (one door, harder to get into...).

Didn’t know about that record flight, but it’s damn good publicity for the plane and its engine. Back then if my auto survived a five day road trip without some mechanical incident or another, it was a miracle.

The high wing helps to minimize ground effects upon landing. Also, you have more room to crab the plane if there is a large cross wind.

Nav lights are backwards on you thumbnail. How I learned.. Port is wine, wine is red, red is left. When I learned how to fly, I was too young to know what port was, so it made no sense, but never forgot.

Unless you're Charles Lindberg or flying a seaplane, your view during landing will be straight ahead down the runway... low wing will have no less obstruction compared to high. If anything, more float in ground effect and lack of visibility in the pattern (from those high wings) makes 172s harder to land than other trainers. I really wish non-aviation channels would do some research.

Totally agree with you, in a high wing plane once you reach more than 30 degree bank you start to lose ground vision. In a low wing plane you see less ground in straight and level flight but you have better traffic pattern and steep turn visibility

Disagree. I learned to fly in Piper Cherokees. Easier to land because the low wing made a ground effect cushion for a softer landing. Also wider gear on the Piper is much more stable. Could easily see the ground by looking over the leading edge of the wing. And when turning downwind to base you’re looking right at the runway over the lowered wing. In the Cessna the wing blocks view of the runway when turning base also blocking view of any other aircraft on final..

Well….respectfully, I don’t know if I agree. The PA28 has a wheel base of 6’ 2.5” vs 8’ 4” for the 172. As far as floating, the 172 has a wing loading of 13.2 lb/sq ft vs 15 for the Cherokee. I agree that the Cherokee will float more when lightly loaded, but full up I don’t think there is much difference because of the higher wing loading. Plus, floating is not an advantage in my opinion. As far as visibility, yes…better runway visibility in low wing when turning, but better in the high wing on the downwind leg. I have flown and instructed in both airplanes a lot (more 172 time) and really think that it is all about what you are used to. Once you acclimate to both aircraft, you can land one or the other just as easy. Same with flying right seat. First couple of hours are hell, but once you are in the groove you can fly one side or the other with no issues. I flew a few airplanes with heel brakes and one guy who checked me out in his Champ said that new students handled heel brakes better than rated pilots transitioning from toe to heel brakes. I’m sure he is spot on. Again, it is all about what you are familiar with than anything else. Low wing vs high wing is an age old argument. Like what is better…..45 Cal or 9mm. In my opinion high wing rules because you can store stuff (tractors, snowblowers, etc) under the wings when the plane is in your hangar. 😀. Otherwise, high wing, low wing, hip wing, biplane….no matter.

I don't have my ppl anymore and the biggest thing I've flown is a Cessna 182 but I love these aircraft, they are so safe. You can't stall them although when I was learning in a C150 the wings were slightly out of balance so when doing stall training it would drop the left wing and once it just flipped so I had to pull the column back instead of pushing it forward, If I could have my licence back I would like a 182.

Quick question about the "Thumbnail picture".... Given we are looking at the front of the plane (I can see the propeller) the two nav' lights are the wrong way around. Red/Green. Wrong side.

I used to fly a 172R. Only downside is you could lock yourself which required you to go into the baggage hatch and try and lean over the seats to open the door.

I think the nav lights were mixed up in the thumbnail. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be green on the left and red on the right if you're facing the front of the plane. (Same for boats)

That's correct. The long words go together and the short words go together: Red left port Green right starboard and in marine applications the stern light is white.

When I went into USAF pilot training, we had to fly the Cessna 172 as the "first one out of the chute". The instructor asked me on my first flight: "Are you feeling sick?....I wonder.... cause you sure are making ME sick!"

I'm a trainee pilot and have flown high wing cesena and low wing pipers in my training. Either is a compromise and I much prefer low wing, low wing has better visibility in turns in the air. Love flying both however

Small plane builders HATE making ANY changes to existing FAA certified models....If too many (any) changes are made, there could potentially be HUGE liabilities issues arising from pilots or passengers involved in mishaps involving earlier models.
