Why is the govend taken from the left?
The halay, which has an important place in Kurdish culture, is drawn from the left in some regions. In other regions of Hakkari except Şemdinli, in Beytüşşebap district of Şırnak and Başkale district of Van, the halay does not move from the right side but from the left. There are different theses known by the people about this issue.
One of them is that after the defeat of the Mirlik of Hakkâri by the Mirlik of Botan in the war, the Mirlik of Hakkari swore an oath that they would not dance the halay as they felt like it, and this has become a tradition that continues to this day.
Another version of this is that the Hakkari Mirlik/tribes refused to pay taxes to the Botan Mirlik and a war was declared and the Hakkarilis were defeated. The Miri of Botan issued an edict that the Hakkari people should dance the halay backwards so that they would remember their "mistake" even while dancing the halay.
In another story, as a result of the Ertûşis' defeat to Botan, the tribes have been dancing the halay backwards ever since, as a form of mourning.
In another story, when the Mirs of Hasankeyf and Botan invaded Hakkari, the people decided that they would no longer pull the hala in their direction.
