Hey Everyone, The Game is The Legendary Axe on TG16 through RGBS. I did want to see if anyone else had feedback on the audio input and trick I mentioned. Has anyone else tested this on other PVMs? That would help confirm if this is something standard or not. Thanks!
@mib_ua
@mib_ua 3 года назад
Hey Steve, Those audio In and Out sockets are linked together with a straight wire (see service manual page 74-74), making a Y-connector. Normally, stereo to mono mixing schemes are using resistors to separate L and R amplifier output channels.
@LaC64
@LaC64 3 года назад
Mono and Left are always output on the white wire. Both signals are always there as part of the analog audio standard. I believe the mono is out of phase and when the input device is switched to mono it knows to process this out-of-phase signal. Perhaps that is what is going on. Does it sound mono when you unplug the red wire?
@Curt_Sampson
@Curt_Sampson 2 года назад
I definitely have feedback on your stereo audio input trick: don't do that! As Mykhailo mentioned, the audio jack labeled "out" is designed for pass-through use (daisy-chaining) and thus is just connected directly to the input jack, very much as if you were using a "Y" cable. If you short together the left and right channels of your audio source it may work, or _it may damage the output drivers of your audio source._ At the very least you want to use a simple resistive mixer to prevent this from happening. Note that the pass-through jacks for video have a switch on them: if a plug is connected to the "out" jack for these it will disable the internal 75Ω termination. So you don't want to have cables plugged into those output jacks unless the other end of the cable is plugged into a device that provides that output termination. (There's no harm going to come to anything if you do this, though; it will just make the image look a little a little brighter and possibly reduce the video quality slightly.)

I dunno, I have the 20M2U and the 20M4U and unless you're right up next to the screen looking for scanline thickness, you aren't going to notice the over all jump in quality that much. I would argue the 20M2U is the better middle ground for a more "natural" look with 600 TVL for 240p sources. I prefer playing NES, SNES and Genesis on the 20M2U vs. the 20M4U any day of the week. I feel like these PVM's are ultimately about preference and to not give into the hype before dropping thousands on these monitors.

The 20M4U is pretty much the perfect 240p/480i monitor along with the BVM 20F1U (not the multi format BVM D20), just a bit more common than the BVM. I used to own the M4U, imported it and confirmed both the M2U and M4U works with 240V. Despite not being printed on the rear label of the shell, you can see on the service manual that the power board is identical for all region models (A, U, E) and automatically switches voltage. So although I don't recommend overseas shipping for PVMs, if that's the only choice to obtain one then people shouldn't worry about voltage. Unfortunately my M4U eventually died and I sold it as a donor tube to a BVM owner. Then I was extremely lucky to find a 20L5 locally, so that's my main monitor now for retro gaming. I didn't know about that audio input trick so I tried it, and audio works fine on the 20L5 too. Thanks for the tip.

WOW! Thanks for the informative video. Earlier this year I had a gaming get together and a buddy from a forum I'm a part of had an "extra PVM" he wanted to get rid of so he asked me for $100. It was in excellent condition and was recently serviced. I didn't think anything of it other than "damn, the picture is phenomenal." This morning I got curious and finally looked at the model number on the back - 20M4U. When I looked it up online I couldn't believe the current cost and the incredible deal I got! Then I found your video and discovered why. I stumbled upon a once in a lifetime deal I guess. :) This set is a beast, and after using it for about 5 months it would be worth the price of admission. Such a beautiful picture.

I have this monitor, and indeed it's very nice! Got it for 100 euros, because there was a short in the canon but after an easy fix, working well. I have a question, what kind of silicone we have on the bottom of the canon maintaining the small plastic before the neck board? I removed it and I noticed that without that sometimes it creates a 'thick' like electricity short ?

Always something I'll be nervous about, I think, since the prices on these things are so crazy nowadays. @3:45 I don't know if you've tried using the out as an in on the component or rgb side but I was able to hook two different signals to them at the same time plugging all of them up. I used a set of bnc to rca jacks for one side and an hd retrovision cable to my sega and then a bnc to scart adapter to my switcher and it worked. Like I said I don't know if you've tried it but it worked for me. Great video and I loooooove mine and glad I got it a couple of years ago. I only paid 500 for it and found it locally so didn't have to pay those outstanding shipping costs. Now they go for crazy amounts. Same with my 14m4u.

I recently picked up a 20M4E for 400€ and I have loved it every minute since. Are there any major differences except for the voltage intake between the 20M4U and the 20M4E? It is very hard to find someone here in Germany who does these kinds of restorations. I have no experience at all servicing these, do have some experience soldering though. Except for a really loud pitch noise (only sometimes not all the times, like an extra skrieching over the usual CRT sound) and some minor convergence issues in the bottom corners this TV has been wonderful to play on. My question is: Do you still recommend replacing those 15 capacitors, following your tutorials or should i just stray away from that in fear of destroying what is, for now, a working CRT?

I am assuming the 20m2 has this too. BTW, I did find if you are say using a switcher that outputs different video types (composite, Svideo, rgb/component) like a extron, but you want the monitor to share a single audio output running to it, I run my audio into a in with a y connector, then run a RCA from out to a different input, and then out from that with another RCA cable to another input. This will make them all share the same audio source. No matter which video input is selected, all audio inputs\outputs active, so will pass through.
