What we would consider a swastika was on every road sign in Arizona until WWII. It was and is a Navajo symbol they call the Whirling Log, which represents Humanity, and life and appears on many Navajo artworks including their famous wool rugs. After Pearl Harbor the symbol was removed from the street signs and Navajo artists went to painstaking efforts to remove the symbol from existing rugs. If you find a Navajo rug with the Whirling Log today, its rare and priceless.
I was suprised when I believe I saw it on the Antiques Road Show an actual 200 year old Navajo blanket with the whirling log symbols weaved into the blanket.
Oh it's more than just the Navajo. Almost every people the world over use it. It's time to take it away from the Nazis who abused it. It is an important schematic in understanding the paradigms of many cultures the world over
The Swastika was a universal symbol. I found it on ancient Greek vases, Hindu statues, Tibetan Buddhist statues, and even Native American artwork. For Native Americans, it was symbol of the Four Winds. I think for Greeks, it was Four Elements. Yes, Hitler reversed the arms for some reason. Someone told me that you can find the symbol in old Polynesian art, too.
The minute I saw the Swastika I realized that the direction was totally different than the Nazi symbol. When I went to China I saw this symbol in the different direction which is Buddist. So it would not offend me as it is not the Nazi variety. As to the coffins on display that is interesting. I would luv to see what is inside. Just morbid curiosity. Good video. Very interesting.
Thanx for adding this tidbit of trivia. The "good" Swastika faces clockwise while the "evil" Swastika faces counter-clockwise. I have a couple of local cemeteries that have a huge population of Vietnanese people and quite a few of them have the good Swastika adorning their headstones.
Garfield's beautiful memorial was one of our stops during a family vacation many years ago. It did not disappoint. We too noticed the symbol. I hope they never "update" it. It is literally an example of how the meaning of things can change over time; of how we need to see such things through the lens of their time /perspective for proper context. Ya the meaning of things can change, but in the case of the swastika it wasn’t just changed a little. It was banned. The government got native Americans to ban it and reject it destroying a part of their culture and way of life. If someone flips someone off you don’t cut fingers off of everyone. What us westerners know as "Swastikas" facing BOTH directions were common in many cultures for 1,000s of years before being desecrated by the Nazis in the last century. They were a VERY common symbol in what is now the US in Navajo culture too. I picked up on some of this after being surprised when I moved to Southeast Asia 9 years ago and frequently saw what I had been taught were "swastikas" in the US schools that I learned were associated with Buddhism here. Hopefully, the symbol can be seen by broader audiences for what it represented historically before it was used as a symbol of hate. A teachable moment. Thanks for the upload!
it actually comes from Hinduism or connected in a major way to Hindus. I saw them all over India, I tried to take pictures by trying to avoid it and it was very difficult because it is everywhere. I thought my friends in the US would get the wrong impression. I now know that I should have just explained it my friends instead of skipping pictures because with it in them.
Those cultures you speak of include Germans, so to pretend they desecrated it is wrong, the swastika is an indo European symbol, and Indo-European was known as Aryan before WW2

There is a small town in the province of Ontario in Canada called Swastika. It was founded well before the Nazi Party ever came around. During the Second World War, the town was unofficially renamed "Winston" by the province in honor of Winston Churchill. A new sign with the revised name was put up, but the town folks tore it down. Another sign erected by the locals said, "To hell with Hitler. We came up with our name first.”

Swastika also appears in Slavic culture, in many different forms, so called Balto-Slavic svastika, meaning it was used is Baltic and Slavic nations when we were still Pagan as simbol of Cult of Sun. After Nazi's it was pushed aside but it can be found in lot of Slavic nations folk and traditional clothing patterns.
I grew up 30 miles east of this cemetery, but never visited it until recently. I am a sculptor and was amazed at how many beautiful sculptures there are. Well worth the trip.
Apparently, Garfield was a very kind and good leader. I had no idea Garfield had such a large and elaborate monument/chapel built in his honour. The interior is spectacular.
@davidg1966 Unlike many politicians of his generation, Garfield wasn't as flashy (as say, Chester Arthur, his vice-president or even Senator Roscoe Conkling, whom Garfield tangled with as president and to whom Arthur had been a one-time lackey). In fact, his contemporaries even implied he was something of a country boy at heart so, it's rather ironic that, of all presidents, his would be reportedly not only the largest, but most elaborate (and ornate), of presidential grave monuments. To say the least, it's an imposing sight to behold!

What an interesting video Steve! I immediately noticed that the symbol in question did not look quite like what the Nazis used. It looked reversed. I have seen examples of this symbol used by various religious cultures. Because of the murdering Nazis and their reign of terror, it will always be synonymous with them when it was actually used in Indic religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Not too many people know that fact. Nor do they know they financial aid to England also financed Germany. as a 20-year-old (I'm 47 now) I wanted to be a caretaker of famous and royal gravesites of which there are many in Europe I was quite shocked that anyone at least at this time in 1994 could apply for an apprenticeship so I applied! and was welcomed in the off-limits parts of royal monuments and it took me all over Europe at the end of the apprenticeship I could find a job if a vacancy opened. well the first was close to home namely the burial vault of the orange Nassau family the final resting place of the Dutch royals in Delft in the Netherlands my task was to wipe the dust off the coffins I did a bit of archeology before this and, I love mummies so I might not have been the right man for this job unattended with a lot of possible 17th to 19th-century natural and embalmed mummies the last burial was at the time from the 1960s did I peek inside with a flashlight? OF COURSE NOT!! -yup! I did and most are fine mummies but I kept it to a small peek I did not know at the time but peeking like this got me bonus points! I was caught on CCTV camera and instead of being reprimanded I was congratulated for checking the state of the bodies indeed I reported no molds of any kind. I did complete the apprenticeship but it wasn't for me the day-to-day was uh, quite boring changing the flag in the vault of the German Kaiser Wilhelm II is priceless but, falling asleep near napoleon bonnaparte's grave monument in a tiny room without windows is absolutely forgettable.

I’m pretty sure Garfield was shot over a job. The man who shot him wanted a government job, and had petitioned Garfield to give him one. The assassin was persistent, and when it became apparent he wasn’t going to get a government job, he got really peeved, and wanted revenge on Garfield.

It was common at the time for the winner of certain elections (POTUS, state governors, etc.) to give his supporters important government positions, even if the supporter wasn't even remotely qualified for the position in question (which, as you can imagine, lead to a lot of corruption). The assassin, Charles J. Guiteau, had been hoping to get such a position (specifically, consul in Paris, despite not speaking any French) in exchange for his support of James Garfield, but Garfield had run in part on the idea of ending such practices, and when Guiteau didn't receive his desired position, he shot Garfield as the president was getting on a train (the types of protection that the POTUS has now didn't exist back then, and in fact presidential movements were often published in advance in local newspapers).

I live in Cleveland, 35 miles west of the Garfield Monument and Lakeview Cemetery and have visited twice but never noticed the symbol, but did notice the artistry of the stone flooring. The cemetery itself is very nice too and from the top of the monument gives you a beautiful view of downtown Cleveland and Lake Erie. Many other famous people have been buried in that cemetery too, like Elliot Ness, the Rockefeller family and more. Thank you so much for this video. I really enjoyed it!
While I was watching this video, I remembered hearing that the swastika sign was a deeply religious sign of peace and abundant love. So I looked it up and noticed that when Hitler used this beautiful symbol, he turned it a one quarter turn to the right to where the flat piece was on top. Apparently, it was supposed to be the symbol of the outstretched arm of salute. I’m kind of a WWII nut. My Daddy was in the U.S. Army and I was always fascinated with that part of world history. President Garfield’s Tomb is definitely impressive and beautiful. When you said that he was known as the Preacher President, I wondered if that was why there was such religious symbolism there. That occurred to me also. President Garfield was a pastor in the Disciples of Christ, a Church of the restoration movement. He was an extremely scholarly man, considered to be one of our most intellectual Presidents.
Thanks for another great video. As a young boy, my son (now age 39) had a a very deep interest in President Garfield…so much so that I took him (from Maine) to visit this monument and Garfield’s home where he had a very special tour. It was a wonderful experience.

The swastika is an ancient symbol used by native Americans and multiple Asian cultures that was unfortunately misappropriated by a German political party and then former government. However, the “legs” of that version pointed to the right. Those at this memorial point left. So not same symbol exactly.
The U.S. Army called it... Running left or running right.... Don't go by the way the "legs" point... Because there were also SS divisions that added feet to the legs... Which made it complicated to distinguish in combat... So that's why you just say..."running to the right" it's not German... "Running to the left" ...it's German...
The day we visited this site it was closed because of a power outage, but we still count that as a "Visit" to a Presidents Gravesite. We definitely have plans to go back. That's a beautiful monument and cemetery. Thanks Steve!

I live outside of Redlands CA. About 20 years ago they discovered an Indian good luck swastika on a historic business building they were renovating. It caused so much controversy in the community they had to re-cover it even though it faces the opposite direction and it was placed there in 1913. The Nazis ruined these related symbols for us. I owned a house in Cleveland’s Little Italy for years. Raised all 5 of our kids there. Our yard backed onto the cemetery wall. My kids learned to ride bikes and later to drive in that cemetery. It’s a beautiful place with amazing landscaping and tombs. Many notables from the gilded age or robber baron era, including John D. Rockefeller, Jephta Wade, and Marcus Alonzo Hanna, are buried there. Our neighbor (now long dead) was a volunteer docent at the Garfield tomb. He had keys to the place and would take us there after hours. The kids loved that upper dome room (the one that is closed to the public.) It’s a huge round room with a cement floor and painted brick walls.
I haven't been to President Garfield's memorial. I have been to Grant's, Lincoln's, Washington's, JFK'S and Truman's. Sad, I know. I'd live to see Monticello, Jefferson's home as I've seen Washington's, Lincoln's, and Grant's. All of the homes are as unique as the men who owned them. I love Presidential history of all kinds. I was there about 10 years ago. It appears the exterior has been power washed since my visit. The monument was financed by small public donations, including small change from school children. Old swastikas are benign. I once worked in a former Knights of Columbus building, built around 1910, that had small swastikas in the tile lobby floor. Nobody objected. The Garfield caskets had to be lowered from the upper level through a trap door. Changing light bulbs in the halo over the Garfield statue looks like a major chore.

North Canton, Ohio here. When I visited Lakeview Cemetery years ago, it was to appreciate a time when large cemeteries like Lakeview were constructed for the dual purposes of burial location and beautiful park for picnics and strolls. I also went to see the amazing artwork in the Wade Chapel (including Tiffany window). President Garfield’s tomb was a lagniappe (a little extra).
The guard told us that one visitor was beside herself with anger that swastikas would be allowed there-even after he explained the meaning. The guard also told us that President Garfield had swastikas in the tile work of his home. We also learned that one of the assassin’s bullets was not removed from Mr. Garfield until after death. The doctors kept “feeling around” for it, but could not find it.
That tile pattern reminded me of the Navajo people's old world designs. They used the symbol in two directions one meaning love and flipped meaning hate. Those are in the love aspect I believe. The four corner triangles are the four sacred mountains of the Navajo people's original lands which almost always appear in their art (pre-European invasion). Others would know more about this though it is obvious that design in particular was taken from Navajo tradition.

Steve…years ago I wrote an article about the swastika. Here is part if it with none of the illustrations alluded to: Some of the earliest known uses of the Swastika happened in eerily-timed coincidences around the world. The name of the symbol of course, Swastika comes from the Sanskrit word ‘svastika’ which meant ‘good fortune’ or a ‘sense of well-being’. To this day it is still being used in many religions as a positive motif as it has for thousands of years. Look at some of the temples and structures associated with a diverse number of religions around the world including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Odinism. You will find the Swastika used often, just as in the United States we find The Cross a commonly used motif in Christian houses of worship and similarly The Star of David in Jewish synagogues. Going far back in history, Swastikas were used all around the world as a symbol of good luck and fortune. It appeared in diverse places such as Pre-Christian Europe, India, Indonesia, a multitude of Asian cultures, as well as being found in Native American cultures from reaching from the tip of South America to the far northern reaches of Alaska. It fascinates me that thousands of years ago in an era of relatively poor communication compared to today’s lightning speeds of television and the Internet, that the Swastika could have such universal usage as well as imparting very similar meanings of good luck, love, and a sense of happiness and well-being. Getting very specific and closer to home for most of us, it was used by the far-reaching Mississippian cultures in the United States from South Florida to the Great Lakes, adorning pieces of pottery. Historical evidences abound in the many different cultures of the Americas utilizing the Swastika with the common meaning of “good” in some form. The written word “svastika” from the Sanskrit was the first time it was codified as to what the symbol was actually called. But we are talking only about tens of thousands of years ago, right? Let’s go to the early 1900’s. The Coca-Cola Company is one of the most famous advertisers that used the Swastika in the sense of ‘well-being’. The fob pendant you see pictured was used around 1928 employing that very connotation in an ad campaign. There was no secret meaning to this use, no political undertones. It was simply a sign of good will at the time, as it had been for eons. The Girls Clubs of America during that era published a magazine for its members entitled ‘The Swastika’. It was filled with club news and suggestions of good things to do for others and how to go about doing them. Consider that during World War I, the American 45th Infantry Division wore an orange swastika as their shoulder patch. Lord Baden-Powell, the English gentleman who established The Boy Scouts created the image you see of the Scout’s symbol atop a Swastika. To the Scouts this symbol literally meant “a symbol of brotherhood.” If someone did something outstandingly good, kind or just to you, then you would reciprocate by presenting this token of thanks to the Good Samaritan in sincere appreciation for their compassion. So the Swastika started being used about 10,000 years ago as a symbol of good, a symbol of peace, a symbol of wishes of well-being, and was used in that universal sense around the world until something happened. At some point in the mid-teens of the twentieth century, small pockets of far right-wing groups began using the Swastika as a symbol in Germany. It was presented as a symbol of Aryan Pride, national pride, but was simply a polite way of saying white supremacy. This movement of Aryan Pride began in a small way as a perverted mission in their convoluted proclamation of support of the Christian Faith. In the early 1920s, after World War I, an artist named Adolf Hitler started tinkering with the design, changing the 90 degree angle of the Swastika to 45 degrees, used black as the color of the design, applied it symbolically on a field of white, and eventually surrounded it in red. Nobody was really paying much attention to Hitler. He was known as being a narcissist as well as just a little crazy and most people believed he would sort of go away, particularly since Germany had little relevance at that moment after their defeat in World War One. The world was sleeping. The Swastika continued being used as it was originally known throughout the world. A symbol of good. A symbol of happiness. A symbol of well-being. It continued being used that way until 1933. The Nazi party officially adopted the 45-degree angled Swastika in black, on a white field, surrounded in red, on March 13, 1933. On May 19, 1933 the Nazi government passed an act prohibiting the use of the Swastika by civilians. The Swastika was now to be used in one way and only in one way. It became the official logo of the Nazi government and was to be used only by them. Period.
I saw a documentary about Egypt history, they also used the symbol on their statues, pottery, etc. The swastika is an ancient symbol that has been used for over 3,000 years (predating even the ancient Egyptian symbol, the ankh).

Interesting little fact that I wound up in possession of an old copy of the book "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling that had been published in the 1920s that had a Swastika on one if the first pages in the book.

How can they keep the caskets on display? Do they have the room kept at a certain temperature? I would think the remains would deteriorate and cause issues
I wondered the same thing, especially when I was the heaters down there. After 140 years everything is probably dried up or mumified by now. Just guessing.

It has also been historically observed as a military helmet decoration, for Prussian and German troops, after the first unification of Germany in 1870. This coincided with a rise of interest in the occult, across Europe.

It's so hard to believe that there are such contradictory subjects in the year 2022. In our modern world we as Americans have to walk on thin ice Steve. With all that said you convey a sense of calm and peace on your channel. Furthermore I feel the the material that you convey is extremely important and informative. Quite a ornate memorial. Thank you for the tour. I noticed that at a few angles he almost appears angel like . The arched windows act as wings and the Halo chandelier brings it all together with all the ancient religious symbolism . A masterpiece
I was at JQ and John Adams tomb yesterday. JQA’s 255 birthday. If you go on their birthdays there is a wreath laying ceremony. I stayed for the service for Adams
I've been to Mt. Vernon and saw the Washington family cemetery. I've also seen John Kennedy's grave and William Howard Taft's grave. Garfield's is, by far, the most impressive that I've seem. I'd love to experience Garfield's in person!

I have been to that cemetery and the mausoleum (main entrance on Euclid Avenue, Cleveland) many times as my family lived closeby at one time (1956-'62). The surrounding neighborhood became very dodgy but the cemetery is beautiful. There are several other great sites to see at the cemetery including the Wade Chapel (interior designed by Tiffany) and memorials of John D. Rockefeller & Elliot Ness.
I was born in Cleveland. For the longest time, I didn't know there was a president buried there, but I knew that many presidents were born all over Ohio. That's what was so interesting to me. But I was with my mom for the day, and I was just hanging out in downtown Cleveland. I had remembered watching a video of the presidential gravesites, and I wanted to take a stroll over to President Garfield's gravesite. I didn't get to, but hopefully one day, I will get the chance to do that. So far, the only presidential gravesite I have personally seen was John F. Kennedy's at Arlington National Cemetery. I also got to go to the National Cathedral, but I don't recall seeing Woodrow Wilson's gravesite. I know it's there, though. Very good video. 👍
Great video Steve. I live in a suburb of Cleveland and have never been to the monument. It is glorious and I was surprised to see the caskets on display. Thanks for taking us along.
Steve did you notice. You can't carry a casket down the stairs at Garfield's grave. They actually cut a hole through the floor where you came into the mausoleum. They lowered the casket down through the floor then sealed the hole in the floor.
There’s the same icon in a pattern on a corner building on Michigan and wacker drive in Chicago. People just don’t look up anymore and ask why. Too busy in their phones.
I recall as a child going to Garfield's Memorial for a school field trip. I don't recall going inside. Also went to his home in Mentor Ohio. I haven't been back since so this was very interesting. Never knew about the Swastika's inside. But I did know about its historical meanings. Thanks Steve.
Garfield was my fifth cousin once removed. But he was adopted so no actual relation. Our family has had many pastors, preachers, ministers, elders, deacons also politicians, lawyers, and authors. I don't know what happened but I'm just a groundskeeper with a highschool diploma and haven't been to church in years.
