It's weird seeing Ainola filmed on video cause my childhood home is very close by so I've walked past the museum dozens of times. It's even weirder to think that I could've bumped into you two cause I still frequently visit my parents who still live there. Anyway, for some background info, Eddy saying that the place feels like it's in the middle of nowhere is pretty accurate, cause back in the day when Sibelius moved to the part of Tuusula, which is now Järvenpää, he specifically wanted his house to be surrounded by nature and have a view of the lake that's around 1km away. The lake isn't visible from Ainola anymore because there's trees blocking the way and also they've built houses there due to the area's rapid urbanization. But the whole surrounding area, especially Lake Tuusula, is very culturally significant and many artists and whatnot have spent their last years there. Writer Juhani Aho and his painter wife Venny Soldan-Brofeldt lived about 600m away from Ainola in their house which they called Ahola (you can pick up some finnish grammar from this: Aino -> Ainola, Aho -> Ahola). The house in which Aleksis Kivi, Finland's national writer, died is situated near Lake Tuusula as well as painter Eero Järnefelt's atelier called Suviranta. There's even an art school close to all these museums, named after painter Pekka Halonen, whose atelier Halosenniemi is also open for visits. In 2015 they renamed the nearby train station from Kyrölä to Ainola in celebration of Sibelius' 150th birthday. Some trains still have the old name pop up on the monitors. Now they're building a massive regional center thingie next to the station and I just hope that it won't ruin the cultural vibe of the place, but we shall see in a few years.
@fmalovegirl98
@fmalovegirl98 Год назад
I now attend the art school you mentioned and it gives the same vibe as Sibelius' home. I'm not originally from the area so I feel like I should give Ainola a visit, after seeing Twoset live in Helsinki and now watching this video makes me want to know more about Sibelius (I'm not a musician, just a twoset fan who is learning more about classical music). Some years ago, my late wife and I visited Vienna and visited a few of the composers’ residences, including Beethoven’s, of course. One place had facsimiles of some of his manuscripts on display. I sang parts of a few of them. That must have impressed the curator, because he let me play one of Beethoven’s pianos! I’m not much of a pianist, but I played a bit of one of his sonatas until I was too overcome with emotion to continue. I hope you will always cherish your experience at Sibelius’s house.

This video was very moving! The transition from the third to fourth movement in Sibelius’ 2nd, is, to me, one of the top five greatest moments in the history of classical music.

My wife and I visited Ainola a few years ago. It's my understanding that Sibelius was a city animal - he like his champagne and cigars. His wife and friends thought he would get more work done in the countryside, away from temptation! When he was younger he would head back to Helsinki, which isn't far away. Perhaps later he came to accept his life in the country. Thanks for this video which has reminded me of that very special place - you really did your research and playing the violin concerto in his room was magical.

This reminds me very much of the time I visited Rachmaninoffs grave in upstate New York a few years ago. Things like their homes, their things, their resting place - it is all stuff you would never think of as being important or interesting, yet being in front of it can make you emotional. I sat there for probably a half hour, listening to excerpts from his 2nd symphony and his piano concertos, and besides hearing that music live, there will be no more fulfilling experience as his music goes for me, particularly as a pianist who idealizes Rachmaninoffs technique and compositional ability. And yes, I DID take home a nearby rock as a souvenir obviously named "Rock-maninoff" :)

Having sung Bach in St. Thomas' church in Leipzig, I understand this feeling completely.

Hope you had a great time here in Finland :) I've never visited Ainola even though it takes about 20mins by car from my home to there. I'm uncultured, should put that on my bucket list :D

I can understand how they must've felt being there :) it's the same with Bach for me! Been in Leipzig in the Thomaskirche at his grave and had to shed a tear, it was a very emotional moment. Also visited the Bach birth house in Eisenach, which I can totally recommend for it's great museum! Glad my best friends lives in this area so I always have the chance to visit a new Bach related place every time I visit ^^

Out of context possible collaboration: ¿Does twosetviolin know that the TWICE members are instrumentalists? Sally can be seen playing guitar and guzheng. Dahyun plays piano and guitar. Chaeyoung plays recorder and guitar. Jeongyeon plays saxophone and recorder. Of most interest to you, Ms Myoui Mina Sharon has been seen playing cello. ¿Would you consider commenting on TWICE playing their instruments? (At the other extreme of Korean entertainers playing instruments, are you acquainted with The Kim Sisters doing Anglo-American Pop during the 1960’s & 1970’s? String bass was one of their instruments)

I was so touched watching this vid. Wot an experience. I felt the same when I went to visit Tennyson's home on the Isle of Wight (UK). As a poet, it was a deeply moving experience to be in the same room as he was once, and staring out across the same extensive and beautiful grounds graced with that majestic cedar tree. Playing the VC.... Ya got me in the feels, Eddy. "... I didn't know it was a bucket list thing till now." 🥲

Sibelius Biolin Concerto is one of my favourite classical pieces and I’ve been to Helsinki many times, but I’ve never visited his monument because I deemed it boring. One of a few things I regret in my life.

The house also did not have running water since Sibelius found the sound of running water too distracting

I've had this same feeling, when I visited the Medici Chapel in Florence, and saw Michelangelo's works there. Michelangelo is my Sibelius. It's hard to describe.

I‘m a bit confused since D major is blue for me and F major is silver. My nephew and my daughter have synaesthesia, too. But the colours for numbers and letters (unfortunately not for notes) differ, e.g. "5" is dark red to me. but for my daughter, "5" is pink. Besides having conversations where all other family members think we‘re lunatics, nothing useful ever resulted from it.

No way, I was just at Ainola a couple weeks ago! Granted, I also live in the same town. Also, supposedly he haunts Ainola as a faint whiff of tobacco.
