Love your videos and educational content. My childhood dream was to be a marine biologist and study sharks. Life didn't work out that way but I still love to learn about them.

Same here. I was working on getting a degree in Marine Biology but life itself caught up to me and I could not afford to finish. But I don't let that stop me. A college degree does not necessarily make you a Marine Biologist. You don't have to live on the coast either. As long as you study what you are interested in and are happy doing it; that is all you need. Good luck to you in your studies.

This makes so much sense, I always wondered why whale sharks were carpet sharks whenever they always seem to be pelagic, not to mention they have spiracles (I always wondered why they had those too, my guesses were that it's either a leftover evolution feature or they're benthic when they're pups, but Idk if sharks can be benthic pups and pelagic adults.)

Sounds like Grey whales; IF I recall correctly (And I might not be), they scoop up sand and filter it thru their baleen to capture amphipods, worms, shrimp etc...NORMALLY they feed in the arctic, but the 'Malibu Artist' once filmed a 'younger' grey whale scooping up sand off of Coast Hwy 1 near the shore near Malibu.

As someone who has swam with whale sharks in La Paz, and studied marine bio, another option is that this shark could simply be avoiding all the "surface traffic" by doing benthic feeding. Even with Mexico's really good regulations on ecotourism, the areas where these sharks feed are not just crowded with other whale sharks competing for the same food, but lots of boats and people.

My old dog would eat dirt sometimes. She did it much more when she was elderly. I guess I forget sometimes that what seems like normal behavior may not be-it could be a sign of health issues or just being a little weirdo. I mean, some people eat their couches. So one whale shark eating out of the sand might not be definitive that it’s a behavior other sharks do. Which I think is kinda funny to think about-these massive fish probably have personalities and idiosyncrasies and health differences (or it’s a normal shark behavior).

Hello from Perth, Western Australia. In February this year, a girl was killed by a shark near the mouth of the Swan River. It's a huge recreational area. She jumped off her jet ski to swim with dolphins that hang around there. I never swim there between November and January as it is a birthing area and nursery for bull sharks. Interested to get your take on this as the most likely culprit was a bull shark. They typically mate and birth from late spring to early summer here.

I saw a huge eagle ray eating pippis in Australia one time. I don't know what they are doing, but sometimes when waves recede on the beach the pippis tumble back down to the edge of the gutter. In their millions. This ray just came up with the wave, parked his fat ass with his head pointed towards the beach, and opened his mouth. As the pippis tumbled, he got a craw full. He was really gutsing. You would not expect eagle rays to be eating pippis. Maybe the whale shark was eating molluscs too. Sand fleas would be another good guess cause they swarm in their millions.

Watching your videos shows me the abundance of knowledge about sharks I don´t have. I considered them to be interesting and awesome creatures before stumbling upon your channel. Somehow my bias gets confirmed. Providing footage of unsual behaviour may deliver extra data points even if the scientists saw this behaviour before. That could have some value too.

Why don't we just tag and attach a camera to one? That would probably help answer a lot of the questions we still have. They're very friendly and pretty slow, so it shouldn't be all that difficult to do. We'd probably need a very big strap to attach a camera to, but it should still be relatively easy to do with this particular species.
@SHARKBYTES

Our difficulty is with the length the tags can be on for, the depths they can go to, and how they send the data to us. But scientists are trying that’s for sure!

what's your take on that viral video from the youtube channel "The Dodo", where a diver has supposedly "made friends" with a tiger shark. Are sharks capable of forming emotional bonds with humans? The diver said that the sharks "can differentiate individual humans". What do you think the explanation for this particular shark's behavior is? The description says the diver removed a hook from the shark's mouth previously. From "Wild Shark Recognizes Human Best Friend After They Were Separated For A Year | The Dodo Soulmates"

Kris, I saw a few video shorts by this person who calls herself an experienced shark diver. She calls herself @mermaid.kayleigh. In both videos I’ve seen so far, she touches the shark and instructs people to do the same. This is to ward off a potential attack. Now I remember you saying multiple times not to touch them for various reasons. I’m wondering if she is sharing misinformation or if this is legit? Considering the sharks she uses as demonstrations are not being aggressive, does she need to be touching them? I’d like to know your professional opinion on this. Thank you. I would have linked the video had I known how to do that. Sorry.
