Lol little pink, wumao or just not very smart. Non-financial debt to gdp ratio running at nearly 300% and CCP still throwing over-generous subsidies at their ev companies. Don’t forget Xi’s personal stake in “green” tech. Also overcapacity if 5-10 mil vehicles a year just lying around…how’s that green? It’s desperate, exports is all they’ve got to keep their economy going. US/Europe don’t have to put up with that. I’m not even gonna go into the quality issues…boom!

Overcapacity is when there's more supply than demand. China had a huge demand for cars due to the economic boom since the 90s. Further, there were no Chinese in-house knowledge of car manufacturing either. Also, Western and Japanese car makers are not controlled by their governments, so how the hell would they flood the market - overcapacity requires a big wallet from the government.

Chinese cars whether gas, diesel or EV, aren't even sold here in the US. So I don't understand why the world is talking about the US putting a 100% Tariff. Unless the US is going to allow Chinese made EV like BYD to sell here, but they have to have a 100% tax on the dealership that would inventory them here.

The American technology media Electrek published an article on the 12th saying that it is ironic that China is often accused of "not doing enough" to deal with climate change, but now the United States says they are "doing too much" in electric vehicles and solar energy. In 2020, Biden proposed during the campaign: abide by the commitment of the 2020 'The Paris Agreement' (Climate Change Agreement) and reduce carbon emissions. In 2020, Biden proposed in the National Security Strategy that the U.S. auto industry should enter "Industry 4.0" in order to mass-produce electric vehicles. In 2021, Biden emphasized that by 2030, the United States will achieve the goal of more than 50% of new cars being electric vehicles. In 2021, Biden signed the "Bipartisan Infrastructure Law", committing to provide US$7.5 billion in funding to build a nationwide electric vehicle charging network, and setting the goal of "building 500,000 public charging piles by 2030." However, as of today, only 4 states in the United States have built and put into operation a total of 7 public charging stations and a total of 38 charging piles. In 2024, Biden calls for higher tariffs to boycott Chinese electric vehicles. "We're very explicitly subsidizing investments in these important strategic areas. We don't want to see massive Chinese subsidies that will just drive our firms out of business."--US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen May 2024 Translation: We'll support US industries with subsidies because it's strategic, but when others do it, it's unfair competition.

If the excuse is US is preparing for the future investment then companies need to invest huge amount and wait, if ever very long time to get pay back. When the US buyer imports goods subject to tariffs from China, they pay the tariff to the US government. This cost, along with any markup, is typically passed on to the end consumer, meaning consumers ultimately bear the burden of tariffs through higher prices. The Chinese seller, however, does not directly pay the tariff; it's the importer in the US who bears that responsibility. China does not suffer the consequences of tariffs. It is the US consumers who are being punished by having to pay higher prices.

@@justeddm Not necessarily. They can supply the huge Chinese domestic market from its China factory and export from China to markets that don't have trade barriers on EVs manufactured in China. Tesla can serve the US/Canada market from Austin, Fremont and Nevada and the EU market from Berlin. That way Tesla has the tree biggest markets covered. They really should also have a factory in one of the RHD markets of the UK, Ireland, Japan, Australia, NZ, SA, India, Malta, Cyprus, Thailand, Indonesia, and various other southern and eastern Africa states outside SA. The obvious choice would be the UK, but somewhere in SE Asia would serve a greater number of nearby of markets. Perhaps Indonesia, India or Thailand could supply the required skilled educated workforce and the best labour price? But perhaps only the UK or Japan would have all the required suppliers? If Tesla can bear the labour costs of manufacturing in the US and Germany, then perhaps the UK or Japan labour costs are not an obstacle. Australia has a large domestic market and all the source materials, but they are lazy buggers who are only willing to dig the stuff up and export it. The price of a Chinese electric vehicle with a 100% tariff is still less expensive than the price of an American made electric vehicle. It is just as 'reliable' as well.

they did the same with Huawei. find a lame excuse to pose tariffs so that chinese products dont become the norm. like i was pretty close on purchasing a chinese EV since it was like 50% cheaper than european or american ev.

Tariff is taxing American not Chinese, lol. BYD just debuts their new plug in hybrid pickup in Mexico as a response. Chinese EVs are not all cheap, BYD U9 is $227k, U8 is $180k…in China. When U.S. banned Huawei, Chinese dropped iPhone to buy Huawei, now Tesla, GM and Ford may see the same in Chinese market. Just hope Biden gets those few auto workers’ vote in November.

Why is it so hard for westerners to understand China? China's government does not "unfairly" subsidize car manufacturers, China's government has a mandate to support all manufacturing in China. As opposed to the United States who unfairly and unconstitutionally bailed out General Motors and Chrysler to support the UAW. What was the "national interest" to bailout domestic auto manufacturers when half of American citizens are buying made foreign cars? What is the national interest to put 100% tariff on EVs from China while also mandating that people buy electric cars? Why go to war with China just because they have a better idea? Maybe we should be much less concerned in politics, ESG, DEI, gender and George Floyd and more concerned about competing in a global economy.

Stop American bashing! Every day 136,000,000 Americans buy a product from a Chinese person, 190,000 Chinese students study in the USA, do 136,000,000 Chinese people buy an American product every day, are there 190,000 American students in China ?

China just launched an electric sedan(IM L6) with a 130kwh semi-solid state battery and 600miles real world range. 0-60mph in less than 3 sec and top speed at 308km/h (191ph) Currently tops the chart in the world on Moose test for production vehicles at 90.65km/hr. Of course it also have autonomous driving on par with the latest version of Tesla FSD. and its battery is chemically NON-flamable. all for 35,000usd. Not only Chinese ev tech is superior it is also cheaper, simply because economies of scale and mature supply chains. The EV race is already over, and China has won. Anyone who don't think so is just in denial of reality.
