Why Is Your Dog Looking At You? 

When my dog looks at me, he normally needs to go pee.

My dogs look at me, then look at the fridge

They are waiting for you to make a move, leader. Get out the treats, play or go for a walk, etc. 😊

My dog looks at me with loving eyes when i walk through the door and races past me to greet his mum, so much for a mans best friend.

eye contact is probably their greatest survival tool. it gets them food, walks and attention.

Dogs and cats are very alert and want to know to every move we might make, that's why they look into our eyes, to pick up clues of when they might get what they want. Mostly they want food, snacks, potty trips (dogs) or clean kitty litter boxes (cats) and playtime, grooming, and cuddling.

Aren't dogs the only animals that look into human eyes? I appreciate all animals, but dogs are my favorite.

This was such a funny sounding title that I laughed out loud. My two dogs are staring at me right now! I do not care. They are not getting the pot roast. It is for dinner and I do not care how much slobbering they do. Yeah, I am going to win this stare down. Well, maybe just a small piece they can have. So, I guess fish for dinner. Darn it. They stare good!

YES, my dogs stare at me whenever they need to go outside to potty, when they're hungry or need to communicate something important including an earthquake or other earth/weather change. My animals know when I'm sick, they guard me in bed and won't move until I get up. They are my heartbeat. Proud P.E.T.A member!

Dogs know what's about to happen in advance....so they watch eagerly...then decide.

As a Dog Trainer we learn so much about dogs especially when we have a pack. My old pack taught me so much. Humans over complicate things, dogs just get to the point. My Service dog never takes her eyes off me. Thanks Dr Jones : )

My beloved dog, Bella, used to look directly into my eyes for a full minutes every night. It took me forever to realize that, after my 10 or 15 minute bedtime ritual of stroking her and telling her all of the wonderful things about her, she wanted to let me know how SHE felt about ME. After a few years of this, I suddenly realized that she was saying, "I love you." Two nights before she died, and we all (including Bella) knew how terribly sick she was, she somehow managed to come up to my bed where my daughter and I were sleeping. It was stunning: she stood there for 15 minutes (somehow), and alternately looked back and forth between the two of us, staring into each of our eyes for a full minute and then turning back to the other to do the same. She was gentle wagging her tail the entire time. I realized that she wanted us to know how much she loves us, and it also felt like she was saying "thank you".

Sometimes the yellow lab can’t hold the mutual stare down. She looks away, then glances backs to see if I’m still staring then looks away. She is clearly not comfortable with it, unless she wants something. STD poodle can hold a stare down indefinitely.

My borador looks deep into my eyes a lot. This is their way of bonding and coupled with physical contact they release oxytocine.

My Chihuahua does it if he wants something. Out to pee, or treat time, or I need down to get a drink.

It's really interesting....the difference between how cats communicate with each other and us and other animals (dogs) in the house and how dogs communicate. The cat will look at me and perhaps "meow" and then look at what she wants. I see the cats doing this quietly with each other, one cat looks and engages in brief eye contact with the other cat and then looks at the bird on the fence....then they are both looking at it. Dogs are a lot different but a lot to read by where their eyes go. I've had both cats and dogs communicate deep emotion to me through their eyes too.... Once cat that was so sick I thought I was going to lose him....I lost much sleep being up taking care of him and just comforting him. He finally turned the corner one morning and came up and sat in my lap and pressed his back up against my chest and craned his neck to look deeply into my eyes and I swear, I felt a profound rush of emotion, of gratitude, in particular, come from him. It was very touching and a new experience for me! I was kind of like, "Really? Is that coming from you??" He was purring loudly, of course.

Sometimes I think I know what they want and sometimes what they probably are thinking. i.e. I found a huge ugly bug in on the ceiling in my kitchen last night. I screamed and yelled as if my hair was on fire! Yes I'm terribly afraid of crunchy bugs! All three of them were on the couch watching me have a complete panic attack and I knew they were thinking "there goes mom again with her crazy bug thing". I even felt as though they rolled their eyes as well! LOL What would we humans do if we didn't have our fur-babies?

Believe it or not our poodle communicated to my husband that the groomer was hitting him. He was very certain of this and we changed groomers. And both my poodles will stand still staring at me in the eyes when they want their bully stick treats. :)

My collie will look at me sometimes and he’s smiling like he wants to play. So I do. Dogs do smile and they can get a simple physical joke. They get antsy when there are big weather changes. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

We've had nothing but labs and our most recent dog is lab/golden mix. They are the champions of the longing stare for affection.....or cheese. :D

When my dog goes qith in the truck up town, he'll rest his head on the center consol. And when i look down at me, he will be gazing right at me. Like, hw thinking, deep thoughts about me. I love him so much.

it always feels like she is trying to speak to me telepathically. Something i've been curious about is why my dog won't look at herself in the mirror, this is something i have noticed since first rescuing her over 6 years ago.

Eye contact can often be a threat or challenge among people as well. Just go to the grocery store and make eye contact with every man you pass, you might be surprised

My rat terrier that while awake and in the same room will stare at me constantly. I mean absolutely constantly. I used to get upset trying to figure out what she was trying to convey. I soon got to know the look that means potty time. But sometimes she just wants ME. Its freaky at times.

My wife’s dog hates me, stares at me constantly. I assume if I was in a room with someone I didn’t trust, I’d stare at them too. I stare back at her, a deep look into the soul look and I win another starring contest.

Dr Jones how would go about sourcing/ making cat food for a food allergy cat with kidney problems. I would like to try a novel protein but not sure which ones are good options. I know some people say low protein and others say not.

Good video but I have to disagree about it only being dogs. I have a female Maine Coon who will sit on my bed at night and look at me without blinking for around ten minutes. If I am reading she never looks away or blinks. Each time I pause my book and look at her she is looking right back. Also my Singapura cat will sit on my knee or stomach and stare into my eyes only less than a foot away, again with blinking for ages. she always has a concerned look on her face. I Do have dogs too,

I heard somewhere that eye contact- the direct kind- makes dogs feel threatened. Is this true? I walk dogs and so I am not sure if it's a good idea to do that. Sometimes they give me eye contact and I want to reciprocate it, but I am afraid of them feeling threatened. I haven't read the book, so I am just asking here. Thank you

My dog seems to do a lot of that. She is a very brilliant girl. She is about 12lbs and is a Vanilla color with brown socks on all paws and ears with a brown stripe on her fore head. Her name is [ Miss Marta May ] She is a rescue Chiwawa + Jack Russell ] From Middles-boro Kentucky ] We live in Michigan and she sure does not like the winters here. We got her when she was 6mon and she is to be 4 in August.

I need help! My heart is full of pain, guilt!!!! We lost our first dog in 2012. So my daughter found a dog in 2021 that had a bad start in life beaten shoved into a very small cage, when my daughter brought me this dog she was in bad shape. I took Mia to the vet, tape worm, a bad UTI, the worst yeast infection in her ears. After an X-Ray we found that she had a solid mass in her bladder. At this point all I could do is take her home with meds and just love her till it was time. We bought a large cage for Mia and made sure to never close the door. She was scared of my husband thinking he was going to hit her, which he never did. When I got home from work she would just stare at me and it was a battle to get her out of the cage but over time she would eventually come right to me. My husband would on occasion pet her but after the loss of our first dog he didn't want to get attached to mia. He would constantly tell her go to your cage even after I called her out to love on her.This on for a year and a half. Now remember when I first got Mia she had a solid mass in her bladder for awhile everything was ok took her to vet for check ups, she got a second yeast infection in her ears. I started noticing changes in her, she didn't want to eat much, she was losing weight I called and called to get her seen but was told they were booked up, called other vets they two were booked up, no one could get her in for weeks. Monday I got home from work and just the way she looked at me I knew she was leaving me! I called the vet again and was told I could get her in friday. My guilt is did I do enough for her??? So back to Monday when I had this feeling I stayed up all night with her. At 12:00am she got up went to my dinning room and collapsed my husband and son carried her to the living, it was as if she was having a hard time breathing. She would look at me then look away then change her position, she got up and slowly went to her cage, she felt cold to me so I covered her up with a blanket, I showered her with kisses ,then she looked at me then look away. I got up to get my phone and heard her making this awful noise I ran to her and she was taking her last breath and she was gone. I can't get past this pain knowing her last moments was nothing but pain. I'm mad at the vets for not getting her in sokner, I'm mad at my husband for telling her go to your cage when I called her out to love on her, I'm mad at myself for just watching her die this slow and painful death but what more could I have done. The emergency vet charges an arm and a leg I'm the only one who works I can't afford the emergency vet.

See every already seems to know EXACTLY why their dogs look at them , after all they cant verbalize as we may understand .? But anyone who has a close bond with their fury friend knows what they want need and maybe possibly be SAYING, maybe sometimes its as simple as I LOVE YOU ...Man! An energy that is so subtle, but its there....!
