Ever wonder why Central America isn't one country, like all its larger neighbors? Well, 200 years ago that used to be the case...

There was the odd case of Chiapas, the only Central American region that decided to stay with Mexico.

The department of El Petén in Guatemala could also be Mexican, but the Mexican government in those years rejected the proposal for that territory for reasons that I don't remember and had to stay with Guatemala since they could not progress on their own since they did not have a maritime coast. Honestly, Mexico would look more attractive on the map, in addition to probably taking better advantage of the resources of that territory that unfortunately Guatemala has not been able to rescue.

Fun fact, of the 5 original countries, Costa Rica has always been the odd one out. The Flag, the lack of a dictatorship/civil war in the cold war and its relative stability kind of confuses the other countries Since it was the least populus of the 5 and with the fewest resources. Honduras has so many issues right now that it is leaning strongly to China just like Nicaragua. Countries in the new world are huge and we don't even notice since they are: 1: Far away from european and asian countries so you can't dimension them properly 2: Close to Canada, America, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, which makes them seem a lot smaller. New Zealand has this same perception hole, it's much bigger than people generally eyeball it to be.

As a Colombian i can confirm. Our country is huge but when you consider our geography there are big caveats like... The Andes cuts our country in half but still manages to cover a big part of our territory. Considering major populated cities developed in the center of the countrty between the mountains it made road connection to the coast and neighbouring countries harder and in the case of Panama impossible. The southeast of the country is basically just rainforest with no major urban areas and most towns being so disconnected the only way to get to them is by plane or maybe using some river. Fun fact tho, given our mountain terrain, Colombia produced the first latino-american to win the Tour de France and the Giro d'Itali.

I've met an Honduran that likes the idea of a Union but also a Salvadoran that completely opposes it. Me personally I see a great opportunity for development in the area and an expansion of the criminal crackdown going on in El Salvador to rid the area of violent crime and also the end of the dictatorship in Nicaragua. Though definitely by far the biggest complaints come from Costa Rica since they're the country that is most well off and would have to share its wealth to the less developed parts. In order to develop further they'd have to appeal to their neighbors and to the world as an up and coming regional power Coming from the Caribbean this reminds me of an idea to unite the Antilles into a union ¡Viva Morazán!

So as you mentioned, the Central American flags today have similar colors and style to the Federal Republic/United Provinces of Central America flag, but why did the Federal Republic/United Provinces of Central America flag choose that style in the first place? The hint is in its original name, United Provinces. The United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, the predecessor of Argentina. A French guy named Hipólito Bouchard, who was serving under the Argentine Navy, raided the Spanish outposts located there during the Argentine war for Independence and the people would see that flag and view it as their liberated flag, so they took it as an inspiration. The man even raided Spanish settlements in California! Like in Monterey, what was at the time the capital of Alta California. After an attack on the fort there failed on the night of November 23rd, 1818, they made it on land the next day and the Spanish forces were no match. For five days, an Argentine flag was raised over Monterey. He was killed by one of his servants in 1837 in Peru.

I'm Salvadoran, and to be honest I don't think even Central Americans quite understands how CA-4 border control works. When I lived in El Salvador, I used to travel to Guatemala quite often as I have relatives there. Some years I would be able to go through by only stopping and showing my ID card without even leaving my car. Sometimes I'd have to get off my car and make a line, but still show only my ID card. Other times I had to show specifically my passport. I never really bothered to learn what caused all this variation but I can imagine it being slightly troublesome for tourists travelling by land that do not speak the language. Also, having to exchange money in every single country makes it infinitely less convenient than travelling in Europe. I know Schengen and the Eurozone are not the same thing, but you really do need both for that amazing seamless travel experience.

The Los Altos part is very interesting. Los Altos existed within the Federal Republic of Central America as its sixth state separate from Guatemala from 1838 to 1840, and then a short-lived independent republic from 1848 to 1849. While you're right a part of it is within Mexico's Chiapas, part is also still within Guatemala. The state originated from the political differences and tensions between Guatemala City on one side, and Quetzaltenango and other parts of western Central America on the other. Los Altos was also the most productive region with most economic activity within Guatemala. So without Los Altos, Guatemala knew they'd lose many benefits that held their hegemony. As the Federation crumbled into civil war due to the influence of the Guatemalan conservatives and the regular clergy, Los Altos declared itself an independent republic. The independence of Los Altos from Guatemala was officially proclaimed in February 1838, but Guatemala got its revenge. In April 1838, they sent Rafael Carrera to subdue them. In March 1840, liberal caudillo Francisco Morazán invaded Guatemala with 1,500 soldiers to avenge what happened in Los Altos and fearing that such action would end liberal efforts to hold together the federation. Carrea hatched a strategic plan that defeated Francisco, and he took it on Los Altos by having their liberal officials shot and forcibly annexed into Guatemala

Somethings to correct... 1. In the maps you don't include Belize in the territory of the Central America Republic and the Viceroyalty of New Spain which should be included since Belize was a Illegal British settlement just as the Misquito Protectorate and the Bay Islands... Belize was legitimized later and the Misquito Protectorate and the Bay Islands where given back to Honduras and Nicaragua when they where supposed to be annexed to the USA. 2. The Captaincy of Guatemala was granted independance in the treaty of Iguala signed by the last Viceroy O'donojú. It is just the the Guatemalan elite wanted to take advantage of the situation and decided to distance themselfs from the Government in Mexico until Agustin de Iturbide forced them to unite to the Empire in favor of what most of Central America wanted. Aside from that good video. Thanks for covering this wonderful and interesting region. With a really short video which I know was done to your best ability.

El Salvador was the only country/province in Central America that didn't want to be part of the Mexican Empire and fought the invading guatemalan (mexican allies) for their independence and pulled an upset and defeated the guatemalan troops. When the mexicans started their invasion against El Salvador, El Salvador wanted to be part of USA as a state instead. The exhausted salvadoran troops fought for their independence against the Mexican empire and were defeated. Mexican troops controlled El Salvador for only 18 months and they eventually left never to control El Salvador ever again.

Guatemalan here. People in Guatemala reject the idea of a Central American union, specially due to the rivalry with Costa Rica and the economic difference compared to Honduras or Nicaragua. And most recently, people feel afraid of El Salvador’s president, who is kind of building a totalitarian state without the citizens realizing. So yeah, it would be difficult for it to happen. Though Bukele has stated in the past that he would be willing to reunite Central America under a one flag, which is kinda scary for someone to say it.

Salvadoran here. Dunno if afraid is really the word. I agree with you that he is in fact propping up an, as of this moment, publically approved dictatorship (which, while I like his tough on crime stance, I am not in favor of unchecked executive power). However, I feel that many in the region, including Guatemala, have been alarmingly supportive of these policies. I don't think Guatemala would like to join a union for much of the same reasons El Salvador and Honduras would: we are each too proud of our own culture's to give up individual sovereignty and we are rightfully skeptical of our politicians enough as it is without needing to bring new ones into the mix. And even if we weren't, trying to have any of us agree on a leader would be like pulling teeth. That said, I have alot of love and respect for our cultural siblings and wish you all the best. Please allow me to point out a slight imprecision regarding the state of Los Altos, the short-lived 6th State of Central America. It was constituted in what today is the southwestern part of Guatemala, with its capital city in Quetzaltenango, which wanted to emancipate from the rest of Guatemala. (The map makes Los Altos appear as part of the current territory of Chiapas and Tabasco) There can be some confusion because the current borders between Mexico and Guatemala were not defined but until the 1880s. Regarding Chiapas, it used to have two internal political divisions: Ciudad Real and Soconusco. Both held a referendum in 1823 and decided to stay a part of Mexico. However, the results of the referendum in Soconusco are contested to this day by some historians, said to have been fraudulent to favor the interests of Ciudad Real. This would have given a substantial part of the coast of Chiapas to Guatemala, or to the State of Los Altos, should it have survived.

We respect our Central American brothers, we admire them for a couple of things, but the despotism of their rulers is not one of them, nor is the communism of the Honduran ruler, nor the totalitarianism of the Nicaraguan despot, nor the right-wing dictatorship of Mr. Bukele. which we are from every point of view obliged to respect because he governs El Salvador as El Salvador wants to be governed and if that is the style that brother Pueblo likes, then it must be respected, but not imitated. We Ticos, as an extremely educated People, know the maxim: ",... Peoples who do not remember their past are doomed to repeat their same mistakes forever,..." and with this we invite our brothers to remember the time of their former president "Martinez", a carbon copy (respecting their differences), the final fate of such a former ruler should call them to reflection. This without taking into account that Mr. Bukele's actions are very effective in attacking the effects of the tremendous crime in that country, but what about the causes of this crime? Have his government's actions also covered this topic? So perhaps we should be more cautious when it comes to extolling those who have not yet finished their work; All of them are reasons why we Ticos are extremely suspicious of a hypothetical and unrealizable Central American Union to which we encourage them if the other countries so wish, but in this aspect we prefer to "see the bulls from the sidelines", and giving ourselves beating our chests we remind all of you: ",... each one is better in his house and God in everyone's,..."🇨🇷🕊

Central America doesn’t have to entice costs rica or Panama in anything. As an example, just because a large nation like Mexico has its problems, some states worse than others, doesn’t mean they should all separate and fix their problems on their own. Same in the in the United States. Some states are more poor and more violent than others, but in a Federation, the free market gives people a chance to choose where they live and what industry they want to work in. Also GDP growth would increase significantly as there are no borders and no need to exchange currencies. Even without Costa Rica and Panama, Centralamerica would still benefit as one country. Costa Rica Panama and Mexico as their main trading partners.

A few corrections: 1810 is called the first intention for independence in Mexico and Central America not just Mexico there was a second call and finally the independence of Mex and C.A. in 1821. The intend of Guatemala to join the region to Mexico was not completed since most cities in C.A. did not agree to it forcing Mexico to invade and fight the troops defending the revel states! The las battle was in the outskirts nod San Salvador ,ending in a withdrawal of the mexican troops that were accompanied by Guatemalan soldiers aswell, but tbh then the Mexican empire had collapsed and the so annexation came to an end.. So en reality only Guatemala agreed to join Mexico but not the rest of the states. There is no second independence of C.A but instead a reaffirmation of the 1821 independence . If ask the people , travel to their countries or read each of Central American countrie's declaration of independence your will find out that it's 15 of Sep of 1821 the only date admitted as the official date. I have study this and done my research and the one problem is that Mexican historians .have their own way of telling their part of the story and Central American historians such as Larde y Larin tells tell the other side of the story.

As a Salvadoran, it would be difficult to reunify Central America in one country due to geopolitical reasons as El Salvador improves, Guatemala and Honduras would had no problem with reunification, but Nicaragua has a political difference with Ortega Dictatorship, and Costa Rica has been developed as the highest HDI of the region and it would be unlikely to reunify four countries in one for approximately two centuries. If one day five countries accept the Central American union, it would be shared the fate as Germany, Costa Rica would look down to other countries, and if any ethnicity doesn’t accept as Central American it would shared fate as Yugoslavia just like between 1838 and 1840. I hope people of Central America have a huge chance to enjoy peacefully with Central American reunification, once all five countries accept this. ❤️🇬🇹🇸🇻🇭🇳🇳🇮🇨🇷❤️
