Ryan Crouser is currently the best shot putter in the world. He broke the Olympic Record on all 6 of his attempts in Tokyo 2020 with his last throw hitting 23.30m. He also broke the outdoor world record, now standing at 23.37m. Furthermore broke the indoor world record. He constructed a new technique called: the Crouser slide, where he stands half a meter further in the circle to make more distance. He is incredible and will throw much further! Maybe someday 24 metres... Edit: he broke the world record again in May 2023 to a distance of 23.57m. (Ryan Crouser also threw 23.12 and 23.31 at this competition) He was still lifting heavy weights and training hard so he is not at his best right now. Maybe at the world championships this year in Budapest, the 24 meter mark will be broken…

Funny thing is benching 225 50 times in a row is probably one of the lesser applicable activities (that involves weights) one can do for a power sport like shot put. Benching 1-5 reps is a lot better. I bet push pressing would be a great exercise as well.
@colincolenso

@michaelantoun9353 4 года назад
A note about ideal launch angle: 45 degrees is optimal when landing height is equal to launch height. In this case, where launch height is greater than landing height, the ideal angle is actually slightly less than 45 degrees, which could also explain why the optimal angle for shot put is between 35 and 40 degrees. Though, I'm sure the bio-mechanical explanation offered is at least as important if not far more important.
@michaelantoun9353
@michaelantoun9353 4 года назад
@ right so if you're stronger in the chest press direction than the shoulder press direction, it makes sense that your best throw might end up more in the chest press direction simply because it's stronger.
@skylerstevens8887
@skylerstevens8887 2 года назад
Also due to drag forces it's less than 45 degrees anyway closer to 40 degrees if I recall correctly. Note the shape of the object has an effect and since it's a round ball it's better than some things but it has a lot of surface area. If he can get the exact angle right I think that'll make quite the differene.
@mrmonstrop
@mrmonstrop 2 года назад
Exactly this. Ideal angle with release 2m above the ground (due to an extended arm) is ~42 degrees.
@shadowregards5903
@shadowregards5903 2 года назад
the angle also becomes lower than 45 if you count in air resistance.
@ssssdsdddbb
@ssssdsdddbb 2 года назад
Nah, air resistance should be negligible for release angle at these speeds and with such a heavy object. I've done the math to make sure and, even exaggerating the values to make it worse, the drag comes out to about 1 newton right at the start of the throw. That does very little to such a heavy weight on such a brief flight - it's a max acceleration of about 1.5% that of gravity.

The only thing more difficult in athletics is the discus, because it literally rides on air to achieve its max length, like a wing. Discus uses the exact same rotation technique, but discus throwers are 1m90+ and weigh 100kg and yet must be lightning quick. Not many people are, obviously
