It's Maundy Thursday/Gründonnerstag which means that Easter is right around the corner! 🎉🐰 Time, to finally dedicate a video to this holiday and talk about how it's celebrated in Germany and the US. Did you know what the McDonald's Filet-O-Fish has to do with Easter (and Cincinnati)? And that dancing is banned in Germany tomorrow?

ABOUT ME: Hallo, Servus, and welcome to my channel! My name is Felicia (Feli), I'm 28, and I'm a German living in the USA! I was born and raised in Munich, Germany but have been living in Cincinnati, Ohio off and on since 2016. I first came here for an exchange semester during my undergrad at LMU Munich, then I returned for an internship, and then I got my master's degree in Cincinnati. I was lucky enough to win the Green Card lottery and have been a permanent resident since 2019! In my videos, I talk about cultural differences between America and Germany, things I like and dislike about living here, and other topics I come across in my everyday life in the States. I do a mixture of Polish Easter and American Easter. I think a lot of Americans do a mixture of where their ancestors are from Easter and American Easter (not all). The Polish bring an Easter Basket to church on Saturday to be blessed. It typically has eggs, bread, salt, sausage (biala kielbasa), a cake, among other stuff. On Easter Sunday the immediate family(mom, dad, and siblings) do an Easter egg hunt, see what kind of gifts the Eater bunny left. After this we get together with the family for a family breakfast that starts with eating Easter Basket, then zurek soup soup, bigos, sausage with horseradish, and cake

I was wondering how Easter might look like here in the US compared to Germany as it is our first time of celebrating Easter in Boston since we moved 😊 My kids were glad to find out that the Easter bunny will also come to our new house to hide some eggs and small presents for them in our backyard 😊 My son was worried the Easter bunny wouldn't make it this year, because he thought the bunny could be too afraid to hop on an airplane like we did 😉

Wonderful video, even with not so many differences, it is still an interesting topic to listen to. Well presented. Yes, like you said it, from 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. there is a ban on dancing in Berlin and Brandenburg on Good Friday. Not all regulatory agencies deal with this in the same way. But that's not really much, in Berlin you don't actually party much earlier anyway.

Alex, there is one way to find out how excellent american chocolate is compared to other countries. Get any canadian chocolate bar (so you don't have to pay international overseas shipping prices) and try it. Any generic chocolate bar from canada will do - it doesn't have to be a premium brand. Something along the line of the canadian version of a basic Hersey's bar, or something similar to Snickers if you prefer something like that. There is a significant difference in my opinion. I won't say which country's chocolate I preferred so I don't mess with your opinion. I walked into a store similar to a 7-11 in Victoria, BC when I was there on a holiday and purchased 2 different chocolate bars in the low-priced impulse buy candy section - not the $$ designer chocolate section.

You spoke about Good Friday and the traditions in Deutschland & the US. Surprisingly (to me), *this* Good Friday seems to be being treated as a holiday -- our normal Friday trash pickup is delayed by one day (which they do when a holiday occurs during the week), US tax filing deadline was pushed off til Monday the 18th so it didn't fall on Good Friday, etc.

It comes from the Christian tradition of Good Friday which is about the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. It is a day of silence and mourning. And people who don't follow this Christian tradition are at least supposed not to disturb those who do. And on Easter Sunday the joy comes back with the resurrection of Jesus.

I’m originally from Peru and I’ve been in New York since I was a kid. My family usually celebrates by eating seafood. I don’t remember if we went to church; we probably did because I remember we had crosses made of palm leaves from Palm Sunday. This year I’m working on weekends, so I’ll probably just spend it like any other Sunday, though for me Easter and Christmas were more of a cultural instead of religious thing.

All over my childhood I had to go to church and my mum had bacon, ground horseradish and radishes consecrated together with a cake in the form of an Easterlamb there. After church, we had these things together with coloured eggs for brunch. I don't know if that's a common thing, but the Holy Mass that consecration of the food was performed took place on 12 o'clock midnight between Saturday and Sunday. Around the church there were wheels spun to make noise and chase the evil winter ghosts off, called Ratschn.

Many of the Fish Fry's meal would include potato pancakes or some form of potato salad and coleslaw. Some restaurants may give you a choice between what types of fish. However due to an excessive amount of snow days during the blizzard of 2015 School eliminated those holiday so they wouldn't have to open earlier beginning of the year. However students who choose to stay home on their holidays are not penalized and teachers are instructed not to give out new lessons on those holidays. There was one try to change it, but it wasn’t accepted, so they changed it back. Rumors have it, that the teachers (and others) wanted to keep the separate holidays to be able to go skiing without all the other states at the same time 😅. Those weeks of holidays in Hamburg are referred to as: spring holidays (Frühjahrsferien), march holidays (Märzferien) or skiing holidays (Skiferien)

Fish fries are very common in the Southeast as well, they may happen any time of year, but they become more frequent on Fridays of Lent. We used to have an Easter egg toss. About a dozen people would stand in a circle all facing the center. Eggs would be boiled beforehand and colored. One or two would be colored but not boiled so no one could tell the difference. Then one egg would be selected for the players to toss to others in the circle until the shell was cracked . This was followed by the next egg and so on. No one knew when the raw egg would be chosen for the toss. This raw egg sometimes survived several tosses before eventually breaking apart all over the person who caught it (or missed the catch). For adults, alcoholic drinks enhanced the excitement.

Hot cross buns were popular in the early part of my life. I am 62. I don't remember seeing too many for sale as I got older. My mom baked Osternbrot which is basically Hallah bread with an egg in the middle and sugar on the top. I grew up in Conneticut USA

Actually, a word for word translation for "Gründonnerstag" would not be green Thursday as it's not "Grün" for the color but an historic grown abstraction from "gran" meaning the word for word translation would be "sad Thursday"

Easter foot for our traditional South bavarian easter"brunch" (taking place after church which is due to technicality actually on Saturday evening) I am missing are: a marzipan cake lamp and porked ham... Things we take to churche before together with salt and eggs to get them "blessed"

Here on the east coast, hot cross buns with icing are a big thing that we have every Easter. Our family isn't religious so we mainly get together for a nice meal(lamb and vegetarian entrees) and give each other small chocolate bunnies. Way back in the 1970s, Good Friday was still an observed holiday but nowadays most people have to use their PTO. I really miss having a four day weekend like the rest of the world. As a child, my parents(Easter Bunny) would hide our easter baskets somewhere in the house and we would have to find them, and Grandparents would always have an Easter egg hunt at their house for all the cousins. And all my siblings would get new Easter outfits.

There was a similar dancing ban in Finland too. If I remember correctly, it was lifted in 1990's. Lot of Easter traditions are similar in Finland and Germany, mainly because of the Lutheran church.

Hi Feli. a great video. I have often considered writing and giving you my slant on things, I am British and have lived in rural Austria for over 30 years. When I arrived I spoke no german, I am now fluent and also understand fairly well Styrian, Bavarian and Schwäbisch. I am writing because I felt your description of easter in Bavaria was quite different to here in Austria. Good Friday is not a public holiday here ( suprisingly, as it is very catholic ) but if one is protestant, one gets a day off. Very typical is the Easter Cross, this is a very large cross which is often lit up at night and usually on top of a hill or mound and can be seen for miles. On Easter Saturday is Fleischweih - locals all turn up at their local chapel / wayside cross and bring with them the easter food, which is then blessed. The food is mainly cured meats, horseradish (Kren), boiled eggs and various breads, not forgettng beer. Afterwards they have a short social gathering and drinks. Then the families go home for the easter feast ( eating said foods ). The typical easter game is Eierbecken, a bit like conkers but with hard boiled eggs. We too have an easter fire on Saturday but this is now only common in rural areas. On Easter Sunday the children search for easter eaggs which are typically left in nests built by the easter bunny. From Maunday Thursday til Easter Sunday the church bells don't ring and it is common to hear socalled Ratschen, ratchets or rattles.

For catholics Easter Sunday tends to be the more important holiday while it's good Friday fro Protestants. At least that's what I learned in school. So it kind a makes sense that it's nit a holiday in Austria

My wife's family ascribes to the Eastern (Greek) Orthodox faith. Easter is by far their most solemn and widely celebrated religious holiday. There are church services beginning on Good Friday and the family all gets together for a large meal on Easter Sunday. Lamb is always served. As far as games go, there are hard boiled eggs died purple and everybody gets one. Each person cracks the end of another's egg with the end of his/her egg. The person left with a totally un-cracked egg at the end of the game is the winner. As for dancing, the Greeks will dance at the drop of a hat normally but, since Easter is such a solemn observance, there is never any dancing. I am not of Eastern Orthodox faith but I am always touched by the reverence of this celebration.

Feli, I am from the same area as you, but I never heard about "Oaschiam". In my family we played "Eierditschen" or "Oabecka" in Bavarian. Two players each take a hard-boiled Easter egg in their hands. A player begins and hits the tip of their opponent's egg with the tip of their egg, intending to break their shell. The one whose egg shell stays intact plays with the next family member. The winner is the one whose egg is still intact at the end.

Hot cross buns were common during Lent, but disappeared at Easter. As to the Easter fire, it’s a requisite at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night.

In my family, Deviled Eggs we're always made. Of course when I make them now they really are deviled! I mix the yolks with a hot mustard and hot sauce along with mayo, then sprinkle them with sharp paprika! Oh, fish fries around me in Indiana tend to be fund raisers for the group putting them on.

I remember my German Mom - from Hof/Bavaria (RIP) decorating a small Easter egg tree with wooden eggs. As far as the dancing ban, I probably am alone on this but I don't think it's a bad thing especially to respect those who died...especially Christ. Even if one isn't religious it is a supportive and tolerant way to accept an old tradition. It is a religious holiday after all. :)

Very interesting what they are doing during Easter in USA. I guess the reason why there are no fish fries in Southern Germany is, that many regions mostly had animal fat/oil so this also was nothing to eat during Lent.
