JD Gibbs was a young and promising racecar driver. With his father owning his team and banking conglomerate MBNA as his sponsor, it appeared as though JD had the world in the palm of his hand. Then came Watkins Glen in July 2000. JD made a critical error entering the bus stop chicane, and the result was cone carnage. JD retired from driving, calling the incident "the most horrible day imaginable. My shame for taking out these two hard working cones is too much to continue on this path to becoming a Winston Cup Series (now Sprint Cup Series) champion."
The two cones that were taken down in the incident were taken to the infield care center, evaluated, and released. The one seen trapped in Gibbs' right front wheel, which was engulfed in flames, needed some talc on his bottomside but his strength and resilience are remarkable as he's continued to work events at The Glen to this day.
