I enjoyed the segment where Ben thinks about how men want a "slay girl" and start liking them for what they do, then they expect them to eschew their lifestyle and change for them, while in the same nerve these men won't choose the girl that they want the slay girls to be (girls who cover, wear no makeup, have no guy friends etc.) They're treating women like build-a-bears that they can twist and change at whim. That topic's pondering section was short, and social media isn't the best place to have these convos, it gets tiring, but I do hope people think about and explore these ideas more, especially before starting relationships. Anyhoo, great ep!
incredibly refreshing to see men on a podcast have a well-informed opinion on the way other men see/treat women and dissect why it's problematic (esp the madonna/whore + caged bird frameworks). this is clearly a safe space for us :-)
I like how you just say "well-informed" instead of "opinions I agree with." Not that I disagree with them necessarily but god damn it's dumb to act like an opinion is the truth just because you like it.

You would not believe the amount of women that were at the show lined up to see these guys, and even as a straight male I understood. Some absolute greek (and jewish?) gods up on that stage with such a commanding performance I thought I accidentally walked into a Broadway show. They took the time to meet all their fans, and even standing at 6'1" muscular build I felt puny standing next to Emil's commanding presence, up there with other great italian americans like Al Pacino and Chris Cuomo. I forgot to thank Ben for getting me addicted to cigs. 10/10 show, easily one of the best things I've been to
I think Emil is generally right about weaponizing therapy being wrong, but if your therapist is never holding you accountable for your wrongdoings that's not indicative of therapy as a whole. You just need to find a new therapist. There is a difference between accepting yourself for who you are and being accountable for that and chalking everything you do wrong up to your past and then sweeping that under the rug. That's just a skill issue with your therapist.
My friend is a manager at a movie theater and some guy came in to complain that they were trying to silence Sound of Freedom because the screen was off in the theater. He was in the wrong room on the wrong side of the theater.
Facebook and threads seem to be pushing the smooth brain, good vibes instagram ethos. Which is not at all what Twitter has ever been. Definitely agree that the people who thrive in that ecosystem never have much to say
with therapy it is so important to find a therapist who holds you accountable and so many people find therapists who just validate their world view and actions in order to feel better about themselves and weaponize it. Additionally, it was great to hear Ben mention the Madonna/Whore complex. I took a whole class on it in college as it related to marvel movies it was very eye opening. Great conversation as always Ben and Emil!

Emil talking about how Jonah Hill's therapy show made him feel gross reminded me of how I felt about the ethics of Jury Duty TV series. All my friends and family seemed to really like it, but I thought the whole concept of the show was gross and that the guy who didn't know he was on the show was being taken advantage of.
same! only thing that made me feel a liiiitttle better was that he *technically* did sign up for it, just didnt know what it would end up being. but yeah the whole truman show vibe is definitely questionable.
In interviews he admitted that he felt slightly paranoid after the show that he was still being filmed, but it didn't last long and obviously he's happy he did it, how many normal ppl can say they are in an Emmy nominated show.
solo show-going is honestly so sick. 0 expectations for you there, completely in the moment, and I can mosh and get stage dived on without making anybody fear for my health.
Sorry you had to deal with a bunch of dumbasses on Twitter, Ben. It's a lot easier for people to attack someone's character rather than try to understand and attack their arguments and criticisms. It doesn't help that things like Twitter tend to create an echo chamber as well, because obviously most people don't want to be known as a pedophile or whatever else people try to label others as in an effort to de-legitimize their opinions.

For anyone who feels they’re overtherapized like Emil talks about, if you haven’t already try it maybe seek out a psychologist who practices CBT. I was sort of forced into therapy as a very cynical preteen but I hit the jackpot with a fantastic therapist who talks to me like an actual person and let’s me take accountability for my mistakes while still working on what steps we take moving forward. If your therapist is available to you by text on a standby basis or is super personal in sessions I find that to be a major 🚩
Blistex and Burts Bees do not work for me at all. Makes my lips all peel-y and terrible. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND URIAGE "moisturizing lipstick"(Its lip balm not lipstick but it is a stick for lips). Legit changed my life.
@@emilderosa $10.50 CAD so yes more expensive than burts bees and blistex but way more effective and you don’t have to apply every two seconds for it to work. Once or twice a day and its works. So i’d say one stick lasts longer too. I think it’s definitely worth it.

all my therapists have held me accountable and i didn’t realize how much i valued that until emil brought up the opposite. i think it’s just hard to find a doctor that’s the perfect one for you
Emil I want you to know that not all therapy is like that. A good therapist will balance trying to teach empathy for self with taking responsibility for our own actions. Trauma is never an excuse to hurt someone else and any therapist saying that (or implying it) isn’t going to help you because they’ll never challenge you.

Talking about the Jonah hill subject, I’ve dated someone like this in the past for 3 years and from personal experience his response is from a place of control and insecurity. My ex would say the same things about my friends and what i would do and its less about the girl and its more about himself. He is trying to keep her controlled by slowly blinding her into thinking the people around her aren’t there for her like he is and that he is truly the only real person in her life. It’s to strip away the things in her life that bring her independence away from him. The bird cage quote captures the feeling exactly. It’s a vicious cycle of emotional abuse. Im glad she was able to get out of that.
