Jujutsu Kaisen has the nickname "Jumpjutsu Kaisen" for a reason, and in this video I want to talk exactly about why this is the case, why its such a prominent fighting structure, and why its so important to the overarching narrative of Jujutsu Kaisen.

As a Jujutsu sorcerer, you are NOT Satoru Gojo There is a solid 80% chance the curse you're fighting is going to be stronger than you It is paramount that you jump them with your homies to guarantee a successful ass whooping

I think the idea that there’s an 80% chance of the curse being stronger than you in general is pretty wrong. It’s been kinda skewed because every single fight we see is our heroes vs some god tier level curse but I’m pretty sure typically they’re not that insane

The thematic importance of jumping that I got was the separation of Humans and Curses. Curses, though they are born out of collective feelings of different people, are solitary in nature. They do not instinctively work together, they need to be somehow forced to. Humans are born from two people, and they are collective in nature. They instinctively work together. I feel like this can also serve as a way to analyze individual characters in a sense. Choso, though born as a Curse, asserts his Humanity by fighting alongside everyone during the Sukuna Gauntlet. Gojo, though he is born a Human, always fights alone, the pinnacle he has reached only has place for him, and that makes him more of a Monster than a Human.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Gojo more in how he fits into this. He specifically fights alone the vast majority of the time, and due to the nature of his techniques is generally considered to be at his strongest when he is alone, to such an extent that the disaster curses' plan to seal him revolved around surrounding him with a huge crowd of regular people to limit his movements and offense. Post-Toji fight & subsequent training he is consistently considered by every modern sorcerer to be "The Strongest", singular, all the way up to his fight with Sukuna, and that strength in solitude is reflected in his sense of isolation from his peers. He's lonely even when surrounded by friendly faces, most of his peers don't actually seem to like him, even his curse technique takes the form of an immeasurable distance that keeps him separated from everything else, a direct manifestation of his loneliness/ emotional distance. He struggles to even see himself as a distinct person because his identity gets lost in the all encompassing nature of his position as "the strongest" As memed on as it's been, Gojo losing to Sukuna makes sense from a thematic standpoint since Sukuna losing there wouldn't be a defeat of his mentality/ philosophy, they both stood alone at the top and both fought from those positions; It'd kill the guy but not what the guy represents. Sukuna can lose the fight physically but he doesn't lose in any way that matters, so narratively the only option is for Sukuna to win. It's from there we get the gauntlet where everyone else is working together in an attempt to bring him down, a way of losing that would actually dispute Sukuna's isolationist view. Gojo's existence does actually support the theme of the importance of togetherness and cooperation because for all his strength, he loses all the time; While exhausted he lost the 1v1 to Toji and failed the plasma star escort quest, seemingly the first time he actually lost a fight based on how he responded, and only came back and won against him after he was untethered and there fighting for nothing other than himself. Geto gets away because despite having the strength to kill him it'd cause collateral deaths and he's not willing to kill civilians (this gets used against him again at Shibuya). He handily defeats Jogo but leaves him alive specifically for the chance to get intel out of him, only for Jogo to get stolen out from under him by Hanami, winning the fight but failing the objective as he neither got information nor killed the special grade curse. The moment he breaks the curtain at the goodwill event Hanami's like "Aight, I'm out", and despite using hollow purple he doesn't kill the curse there either, and because they were distracted by that he didn't catch on to Mahito stealing Sukuna's fingers or the curse wombs. For as good at throwing hands as he is he consistently loses the parts of fights that isn't beating up the other guy, and usually that's because whomever he's fighting is coordinating with others and working as a group.

The latest chapter highlighted something very important to me. That the reason Sukuna hates Yuji so much is because he is a person satisfied with not being the strongest or number 1 in his universe because he has already selected the role he wants to fill of his own making. He permeates the concept that when working optimally, the many will always overcome the one. Standing in solitude is not a demonstration of honour, power and confidence but in fact is a rejection community, evolution and strength in unity.

I feel like gege actually found q way to deliver Naruto's intended message of collectivism, cooperation and bonds surpassing individual talent, because 80% of what yuji is as a sorcerer is because what other people gave him, kenjaku's disgusting body modifications, Sukuna's twisted existence inside him, Gojo's, nanami's, Todo's, kusakabe's, instruction and everyone else who has trained him, *BUT* , the crucial aspect missing from naruto is that yuji was only able to become what he is because of his unwavering determination, his rock solid mentality and all the sacrifices he had to make, including the people who gave their life for him. I love that Yuji's autonomy gets constantly taken away not only by monsters like sukuna and kenjaku, but by his own companions who put their lives on the line for his safety because they believe in the change itadori can bring, that's why higuruma's and choso's deaths are so unbelievably soul crushing while Neji's death only felt like a cheap trick for Kishimoto to have less loose threads to tie at the end. TL;DR: Gege is an incredible writer.

@@ConstantinDOSSOU-vy1zo 1) No, not all of his power, only the opportunity for him to grasp it. He was given the door and the lock, he needed to create the key by himself to open said door. 2) Yuji decided to sacrifice his life to save multiple people by running into the school to save his friends and clubmates, by eating the finger to save Megumi, by deciding to give his life in a sacrifice to kill Sukuna for good, by jumping into mahito's domain to save Nanami without knowing he was immune, by deciding to become a cursed spirit killing machine only preoccupied on the obsession with exterminating all of them as he told mahito in Shibuya and countless other times. His life was sacrifice, sacrifices by the people he lost to help him and sacrifices by himself to help the people he cares for. 3) Naruto was gifted from birth with inhuman levels of chakra from a clan famous for their chakra pools and sealing jutsu, given a free infinite energy source in Kurama that even while not directly helping him, he could just use at will, he magically learned a jutsu that completely brakes the logic and mechanics of the world by conveniently giving him infinite training time in seconds. He didn't have to train to use multi shadow clone jutsu, he just magically could after being explicitly stated as being remarkably awful at cloning jutsu, but perfectly doing a massively more complicated one out of thin air. He was conveniently more adept at harnessing nature energy than the literal toad sage and was the first person in history to reach the true toad sage mode, while also not even coming close to any of the drawbacks or dangerous parts of using that energy aside from the brief moment in training. Kurama was conveniently rewritten from a merciless demon fox anxious to devour Naruto and everything he held dear to a goofy puppy that because best friends with someone just because he called him by his name. And if all of this wasn't egregious enough, he's then revealed to be the reincarnation of a moon god and given the power of said moon god. Every time people help each other in Naruto, Naruto becomes stronger, every time people help each other in JJK, society becomes stronger. That's the difference in messaging between both series and why jjk's message hits while Naruto's fails to deliver. Have nice day.

One of my favourite anime/manga tropes is the character who can mimic other people's abilities, but usually that character doesn't get to the top or is undone by an individual genius in some way. JJK features a lot of mimics now that I think about it, but especially Yuta and Yuji. Its refreshing to see them presented in a different more positive way within the manga and also for Yuji's borrowing or copying of others protrayed as a strength in the way you describe at the end, rather than a good but ultimately limited ability as is usually the case.

One of the reasons why I like JJK so much is because Gege understands fight choreography and what makes interesting/fun fights. The matchups make sense, so when the time comes for a "jumping," it holds so much weight. My biggest complaint (which is rather small in the grand scheme of things) is that I wish we got to see other characters work together outside of Yuji. We did get Yuki/Choso, Everybody vs Dagon, and the whole verse vs Sukuna, but I would've loved to see Todo and Yuki, Gojo and Nanami etc.

It also allows characters to have weaknesses but not falling into the classic shonen trope of the character constantly powering up to defeat whatever's infront of them. Having a squad of high intellect, high physical and high skill fighting on their strengths while having their weaknesses covered is dope.

Fuckin’ *phenemonal* video, this is my first time seeing your name pop up on RU-vid but you’ve got a new subscriber!! I absolutely love JJK, and have always felt the exact same way about the concept of multi-battles like this; it’s such a wonderful way to contrast with other shonen. Typically arcs would begin with two groups whittling down each others numbers until a big 1v1 at the end; whereas JJK is the opposite, a myriad of individuals goals and ideals converging on one spot into all out gang warfare. Noble fighters like Yuji and Megumi, mercenaries like Noabito and Mei Mei, and forces of nature like Yuta and Gojo all having very different reasons for getting involved in these climactic battles doesn’t just give us a variety of characters to play with at the end of an arc-- it’s the very reason why they’re not all on the same page at the beginning!! They’re all coming from different places (literally and metaphorically) as they’re drawn into the major conflicts, so they’ve all undergone some amount of conflict or growth by the time they reconvene too, meaning every time Yuji and Todo team up we’re looking at a different version of their team.

there's one more aspect about jumping that is not mentioned here: curses and sorcerers powers alike get to certain highs where a "fail" one on one fight would be a death sentence, a domain expansion can be an instakill move for example, so jumping your enemy and not letting them act or fight comfortably is key for victory, or at least survival. The Sukuna gauntlet or Yuuji and Nanamis's jumping Mahito are key examples of this. in the first case Sukuna would not have been defeated if he wasn't always having to deal with several people messing with him, stunlocking him or doing ambush damage, he would just open his domain and nuke his opponent, rest, rinse and repeat (he is a literal end-game raid boss). On Mahito's case, him being unable to even move by getting punch stunlocked denied him the ability to even make an offensive move until he developed his domain. Of course the tactical aspect of jumping is not the point of the video at all and i stongly agree with your take on the writing aspect of it, but i felt like i needed to point that out or else my autistic brain wouldn't be satisfied. great video ^^

I assume they always jumping because their opponent is much stronger than them. Most of the cast are grade 1s or lower fighting Special grades. So teaming up on them is a given and makes more sense than other show where someone clearly stronger than the mc's side somehow loses in a 1v1. The grading system is what grade curses they can take on and make it back alive. It would make no sense lore wise for them to be able to win in 1v1.

It's honestly why I was always okay with the pacing and not having filler with JJK, while characters as a whole are not explicitly written out to the fullest/or having multiple side characters interacting with other side character, I felt that how they fight shows damn near just as much about them.

I completely thought this was about the genius of actual jumping to add more dimensions into a fight. There is the incredibly obvious benefit of jumping to dodge an attack but jumping's weakness has also been explored with the mid air attack by Hanami against Yuji and Todo as well as Yuji getting surprise attacked while jumping down stairs

JJK has been the most real and sincere study of the "All for one" vs "One for all" mindsets I've ever seen in a shonen, which is funny because that's honestly what most of them are about. I think this final battle between Yuji/Gang Vs Sukuna has been the ultimate version of that argument, with the protagonist and antagonist each truly epitomizing each way of life. The funny thing about that though, I think Sukuna lost that argument the moment he relied on the ten shadows technique to defeat Gojo.

The frequent many-on-one fights in JJK also serves to elevate the stake of the battle between humans and curses while highlighting just how dangerous the opponents are. There's no room for playing fair; honoring the 1-v-1 is not a luxury the Jujutsu Sorcerers can afford when the fate of millions of people is at stake.

I'm a bit sad that I got spoiled a few things, watching the video... But they're things I expected to happen so it won't ruin my surprise watching the next seasons. This was a great video though. I think one of the things that also makes jumping more important is that a lot of these sorcerers don't really wanna go through all this shit. They're going along with the requirements of being born into that world, but they're not so indoctrinated that they would act as serious about it as a shinigami or a ninja. If things don't have to be troublesome, let them not be troublesome. And then you have crazy (and strong) characters in the mix so of course they wanna band together Salmon roe

He says that itadori never becoming more important then the whole, which is true, but this also highlights a very large part of the story, there was someone who was more important then the whole, gojo, thats the reason why he was sealed during shibuya, thats the reason he gets killed by sukuna, its not because he was weak or unimportant to the story, he was killed and sealed for the simple fact that he was just too important

Fights in JJK highlights compatibility, strength, and finesse. You aren't beating someone just because you remember about the promise you made with a friend 10 years ago. If you're outmatched, you need to fill in the gaps with numbers and even then it might not still be enough to overcome experienced fighters. Example, Kenjaku manage to defeat yuki, choso, and tengen trio, but almost lose to takaba (basically a newbie with OP technique).

The reason I love the jumping that the jujutsu sorcerers often do is because they do it against someone who is trying to "take" from others or is siding with people that do. It makes the jumping justified in my opinion.

Ok one thing about the Nobara caring less about other lives than Yuji. Yuji knew that they weren’t curses yes, but he would be happy to kill mahito for harming innocent lives so why would he care about the cursed wombs? Spoilers! The cursed wombs were his brothers, it’s showed that choso has a sort of telepathic attachment to his brothers and Yuji being a cursed womb felt a little bit of the telepathic death after killing the cursed womb brothers.

Yeah man we all got to remember the reason the sorcerers and some times Curses go 2/3 vs 1 cause certain characters in the factions are city to calamity level of power or even have the skills and technique to take on multiple opponents which why i dont mind when Itadori teams up with others cause one he hand to hand focus character who is inexperienced in the sorcery of Jijitsu along with the Sukana take over problem also certain characters like Megumi and Maki versus Nature Curse Spirit forget their name & Yuji & Nobara vs Kezichu & ??? Perfectly represents these type of fights to survive and even have some remorses about killing sentient beings despite their origins

In a genre where most of the fights are poor choreographed slobs with yapping sessions between the slobs, jumpsu kaisen shows in a clever way that honor doesn't matter when it comes to putting your life on the line. There's no honor in death and you get to stay alive for another day if you win in this series and the role of "jujutsu sorecerer" shows that in a phenomenal way because, like Gege said, "no sorcerer dies without regrets". On another note, jumping in this series shows amazing fights sequences and is really refreshing for us viewers.
