My only issue with KD came from him getting Kenny Atkinson fired because he wouldn't start Old Man DeAndre Jordan over Jarrett Allen on that 2021 Nets team. Atkinson was the perfect coach for that roster and the roster was perfectly constructed for what likely could have been a multiple championship run. Replacing him with Steve Nash, who was more of a player development guy, made the situation even worst. Also, the amount of trade requests after actively destroying organizations futures (4 firsts + young guys for KD, Harden, Beal) is annoying to see as a spectator because these rosters will not be constructed to win anything meaningful outside of the first round.

For better or worse, we like the narrative of a hero overcoming and completing an epic journey for a championship. The KD thing just feels like if Batman decided that he should join the League of Shadows and destroy Gotham. It also doesn’t help KD that he was so insecure about it.
@fluffyface4449
@fluffyface4449 8 месяцев назад
We might like that narrative but that isn’t realistic in sports. When playing against the best you want to be with the best otherwise you’re not winning, so that’s what KD did. His insecurity about it definitely didn’t help public opinion like you said though. But with all the hate he was getting for it, insecurity is to be expected.

One of the most important thing about this particular fiasco is that KD never talked about having shooters with Sam Presti. Presti has never stated anything where it implied the KD wanted to leave OKC. He got the call a few minutes before the news leaked to the media. And I bring this up because Sam Presti is definitely the kind of GM who would listen to his players and he is by far one of the best GMs in the league as well. That's why it never sat well with me. Another reason why I personally detest his move to GSW was what he said at the time. He stated, "I want to play out of my comfort zone." With the 73 win team? Lol! At the end of the day it's just a good business decision that's all it is.

I totally agree with people “not liking basketball” especially as a sixers fan. I feel like the tribalism that surrounds sports on top of not just enjoying what you’re seeing sometimes makes watching sports less fun. For the last two years, I’ve disliked watching how my team played in hopes that it would help us go further and it didn’t, both because of injuries and the players themselves. This year, I wanted to just enjoy a team that I hoped would be fun and they have been fun to watch except that whenever Joel or Tyrese do something great, every comment is “but can they get past the second round?” I just don’t understand why you would watch the regular season if you’re just going to say bs like that. Why not enjoy the time when there is less pressure then turn up when the playoffs begin especially since there is a very low chance we will actually make it past the second round again even if we’re fully healthy
@albericponcedeleon2696
@albericponcedeleon2696 8 месяцев назад
As a non-Philly fan, I'll offer an outsider's counter. Part of why "can he get past the 2nd round?" comes up so often is because it feels like there's no point in getting excited for the 76ers during the regular season when every year they have the exact same ending. It's like reading a series of books by the same author who always writes amazing 1st and 2nd acts, but keeps re-using the same underwhelming 3rd act structure. Eventually it becomes harder to be invested in the journey, when you know the outcome will be disappointing. This year might be their best chance since 2019 to potentially destroy that narrative, but I'm not counting on them.
@tysonmaddox1090
@tysonmaddox1090 8 месяцев назад
@@albericponcedeleon2696 and that is understandable. If one doesn’t want to invest or feel like they can’t then they don’t have to. My point is why not let people enjoy good basketball? In a couple of years, we will almost certainly be in a worse position so why not enjoy what we have? Also, there are plenty of places to complain about the team if they are not doing what you expect, so then why flood the spaces that are trying to celebrate something with unnecessary negativity that has nothing to do with the post?

I remember watching the KD warriors introductory press conference and just thinking this was the smartest move he could have made at the time. But it is an interesting thought to see what could have happened had he gone with the Cavaliers instead of the warriors that year.
@Dahras1
@Dahras1 8 месяцев назад
You're not wrong that moving to GS was an amazing business decision for KD and that he has every right to go and get the best deal he can. But as an OKC fan, it was really frustrating because it was kind of a "mask off" moment about the state of the NBA and fate of small market teams. The fact is that nothing in the NBA structurally promotes the kind of team loyalty that makes parity possible. If you are a small market team, your only hope to win, or even just to retain your good players, is to try to get a championship in the short window between drafting a superstar (or two, or three) and the national media realizing they are a superstar. Of the last ten NBA Finals, more than half were won by super-teams in large markets. That isn't a mistake, and it isn't something that the NBA has any desire to fix. I feel lucky in a lot of ways as an OKC fan. Sam Presti is, without a doubt, the best general manager of the last two decades, and his decisions have been massive in keeping us in a place to win. But it's really sad to know how close that OKC team was to bringing back a title, and how any chance of that happening got thrown out (for KD to go to the team that beat us, no less).

3:23 LeBron spent 7 seasons in his first stint in Cleveland, with 1 disastrous Finals appearance. KD spent 8 years in OKC, with 1 unsuccessful Finals appearance. For all the criticism each received, you can't deny that they both exhausted all their options before 'taking the easy way out' or whatever. A big difference between them is illustrated by KD's apparent lack of concern for these types of narratives, as exhibited on Twitter and in interviews; where LeBron obviously still felt like he had something to prove after his two 'easy' rings in Miami.

The vitriol and "Ringz" discussion is wild in the NBA. Giannis was a bum and couldn't do it until he did, Jokic was a soft big and couldn't do it until he did, Lebron literally was called Lebronze because he couldn't do it and also struggled in the Olympics until he went to 9 straight finals. Going further back even Jordan was called a regular season player and not a clutch guy until he started winning, we don't remember that because it was in the 80's and coverage isn't as encompassing as it is now.

Bro everyone who hated on the KD to the Warriors trade were not fans of basketball, because those teams played some of the most beautiful basketball ever, the ball movement was great, the spacing great, everyone played their roles and it made other teams tighten tf up. Also it made front offices earn their salaries, which meant that team building and trades became next level which is great as I honestly believe that is most entertaining and important part of pro-sports. btw I'm a Mavs so technically I should hate the Warriors but when Curry and them are going off putting up video game numbers it's just fun to watch...plus I'm petty and I think that drowning teams with 3's is awesome and I've always hated how some people focus on super physical things like "poster dunks" or dudes going hard in the paint, it's like ok cool Waka Flocka you dunked on broseph and you showed off your muscles by flexing but your team is still down by 20+ so goodluck with that and all the extra wear and tear on your body. You're missing a key issue about NBA great player discourse right now. The cause of everything. The discussion is about who's better than Jordan. Nearly everybody that's individually great is trying to catch Jordan. The closest person to doing this is LeBron James. That's why rings have become so important. LeBron doesn't have the 6 rings in 8 years like Jordan has. Then when people that support a LeBron or KD being better than Jordan appear, that's one of the arguments that are gonna be used. Two other major arguments in the NBA discourse are defensive accolades and how many games you played during the season. Jordan did a lot more in a shorter time frame than people remember. Until someone with a different set of circumstances comes close to what he did then NBA did then this is how Convo about the NBA will be.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't think GSW would have won back to back titles without KD. Especially that 2018 ring. People remember two things about those play-offs. JR Smith forgetting the game was tied, blowing game 1 and completely deflating the cavs. It ended in a sweep that was basically a no-contest after that. The other is the Houston rockets team you brought up missing 27 straight 3s in the WCF. But the thing about that one is... it took a record-setting collapse of one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the NBA going ice cold for the warriors to make that finals. They were down double digits at the half, the unbeatable warriors were that close to being beaten. Like I hated the warriors but I don't think what happened ruined basketball like so many people say. Like yeah, most teams wouldn't be able to compete, but that's true like almost every season. Hell I remember the days when if you weren't the lakers or spurs, getting out of the western conference was a pipe dream.

The NBA playoffs are a very capricious thing, weird stuff can happen, and the sample size is really low for NBA seasons. For example, the Nets actually were having a really good run, and then Harden gets hurt, and despite that, the Nets very nearly win the series against the Bucks, down to Durant having his toe on the 3pt line in a shot that would've been a game winner instead it goes to OT and he's very obviously gassed. Kudos to Harden to trying to play through a hamstring in that series, but yeah. Playoffs are really random.

From a distance, KD seems like he never bonds with a franchise. Of course it's a business, KD himself is a business, grossing 8 figures a year, even without endorsement deals etc. He has a responsibility to calculate the best business move he can and then make it. We can argue about whether it's a better bet to stay and build in a particular franchise or to move around until you find a championship formula. Sort of like "buy and hold" investing vs day trading. The fans are more interested in the stories you can tell about a star's career, and it seems that sticking and building is seen as heroic (even if tragic, as Dame was in Portland), while roaming in search of a chip is seen as mercenary and morally dubious, even villainous. That's a whole different subject. Ok... But what strikes me is, from a distance, it looks as if leaving a franchise costs KD nothing emotionally. Like, he forms no strong personal attachment to the players or staff or city. Is that good or bad? Well, if it's true, the downside is that maybe he never quite gels with the team, on the court. And watching him play over the years, he does play kinda like a solo act with 11 side men. And I'm not sure that's great for winning chips, unless he lands himself on a squad like peak Golden State Warriors. Sorry for the long ramble.

I think the reason rings became out of nowhere more contentious in regards to Lebron is because after 2016 there were people who were thinking Lebron could go on some back to back or three peat run to rival Jordan’s resume more because I think some people may have just wanted to see someone who could’ve gotten close to it.

I think Kofie is completely wrong about how people will remember tjose James Harden Rockets teams. Plenty of teams that made deep playoff runs but never won get remembered a la (90s Pacers, 90 Knicks etc) that coupled with how Moreyball kind of single handedly trandformed the league qnd this era of basketball makes them inherently unforgettable imo

Like him or not it was good for his legacy but overall I still stand by the fact it made the league boring. We know they would win if healthy and they did. Respect to KD for playing to his caliber on that roster but lvl of difficulty was lower in comparison. Only real issue I got is people putting KD in certain all time talks based on his GS-Finals numbers w/o context. (Ex: The level of spacing he was provided and how that allowed him to be his best self) Also I just personally believe Steph was always better than KD and him winning those Finals MVPs aren’t representative of their team value.

Something about the debate shows I always thought re: Lebron. Lebron was the first and only guy who came close to Jordan in individual greatness - and that was threatening to NBA old heads (or take merchants like Bayless) who had to find a reason to discredit him. Over time it just devolved into this idea that the only thing that matters is RANGZ. It's exhausting as a fan (of a team that has never won shit, the Timberwolves). Maybe I'm just more connected to it because of the previous generation's Duncan vs KG debate, lol. KD rules, and it was kind of sad that the Warriors thing didn't last long term.

I like your perspective on KD because people love to omit history to make their content sound relevant. KD himself said he wasn't the type of leader Kobe was or otherwise. He just wanted to hoop. And as someone who personally played with KD as a kid, the guy just LOVES to play. That's all it's ever been for KD and it simply translated into an NBA career. But this narrative of 'he not a leader' and 'he gave up on his team'...lol These are people who don't watch the game and forget the history of what led KD to leave OKC in the first place. It had nothing to do with winning or losing. KD wanted titles for sure...but Sam Presti stuck the franchise label on Westbrook, and that was a slap in KD's face after he took that team to the NBA Finals. So he quietly wanted out. At least he waited until he was a free agent to leave...lol So yes, I'm leaving to the best organization I can find after having a taste of the Finals so I can get back and win it all. And maybe it wasn't as exciting because he knew he won with a team who organically gelled to get to that point. But so what? Every team is property of it's owners. And that's what the fans forget. So you have to make the best moves when and while you can in the league. And if you're as good as KD? You can pretty much do what you want. His numbers prove it. His moves billions around board with him.

Been a KD fan since they took the 2010 Lakers to 6 games, couldn’t believe how good those young guys were. Thank you for finally stating the obvious. I get the hate but we’ll look back more fondly on that GSW team in a few years, they played the most beautiful form of basketball and KD became a far better player. They were built WAYYYYY better than OKC & Boston, the other team he considered and that would’ve made me hurl.

Idk, you kept asking “who cares” about how a person wins a championship but that’s the whole point of what a legacy means. A legacy is derived from what people think about an individual, it’s not something that you get to decide what your legacy is or isn’t. You are right in that KD’s choice to go to GS what the best business move he could make. But when it comes to how the public remembers a player and how great they were, things like playing and winning in the team that drafted you are always going to be considered better than moving and winning. That’s why while KD might be a better basketball player than Stephen Curry, Steph is still the greater Golden State Warrior.

I dont think i could disagree more. If all he wanted was to win rings then check out and didn’t care about what fans thought of him, then going to the Warriors is the smart move. But him caring very much what fans and media think and still expecting to be regarded as one of the 10 best players of all time unanimously makes this a very weird move. It makes him seem like he can’t read the room or like he has very little self awareness. Most people will never respect his accomplishments. Perhaps what I disagree most about is how he would be perceived. I think the James Harden comparison is a little faulty. Harden played a very controversial style of basketball, that while myself and others enjoyed watching, some believed was antithetical to the “spirt of the game” or whatever and truly despised him. Also before he went to LA, he was painted as a cancer and horrible teammate because people looked at how he was on four different teams in a four year span and considered no other factors and declined any nuances behind his decisions to leave teams. It had become obvious that he wasn’t going to win in Houston so he went to Brooklyn. Kyrie (a big reason he wanted to go to Brooklyn) literally gave up playing basketball just so he didn’t have to get vaccinated against an ongoing pandemic. And we have no reason to not believe his reason for wanting out of Philly (if Morey [who he had a decade long professional relationship with] lied to and deceived him then anyone in that same situation would want out). But because the teams were all in relatively quick succession, he’s labeled a cancer. If KD gave it an honest shot in OKC, they had a real chance of winning it all. I really think their careers are not comparable at all regarding public perception. I think a more apt career comparison would be Allen Iverson. Well liked and considered a legend for all he did for the game. KD was on that path but decided he wanted to have his cake and eat it too. Keep up the great videos Kofie. I love the content. Also nice Ducks jersey. I’m wearing mine today too

As a business decision, yes. But in practice, joining the best regular season team that not only just beat your ass, but you lost to cuz YOU as your team's 1st option blew a 3-1 is just nuts, I'm sorry . Any other team and OKC fans are mad but the rest of us think it's interesting but the WARRIORS??? nah

It is sad that KD probably only made that move because there was so much pressure on him from the media to win a ring, and then the same media put an asterisk on those rings. Lebrons heat ones had more legitimacy, but if they'd been the only ones he'd won people would say the same things. It was the ones after that legitimised his legacy. We aren't used to GOAT candidates that don't just start stomping the league after a few years. It's messier these days. KD is for my money one of the top 5 talents this league has ever seen but he'll never be in the GOAT debate because this stuff does matter to people, and it always has. Just ask Wilt

Bro, KD to Warriors killed my personal investment in the league that i still dont really have back. For two years i just didnt give a shit about bball. It changed once the raptors won, also helped that they were the semi local team (canadian here) but shit has made the nba suffer as a product imo. Now objectively, great business decision for KD, but came at a cost to the sport as a whole

We just live in a nitpicking time. People have platforms to speak but nothing to say, so the easiest way to babble on is to nitpick and criticize. If KD had done things the right way, even if he won a ring with OKC I guarantee NBA fans would have found a way to crucify him for it. I can't think of any superstar who doesn't get some level of foamy mouthed hate.

The issue isn't that he chose wrong. It was that his talents could have brought any team that was in the running for him at the time *directly to the finals* given the landscape of that free agency, but the assuredness of Golden State and the way that it happened - along with KD himself being hypocritical about caring or not caring about his legacy - left little to no room to care about the state of ball at the time. As a celtics fan, I was firmly in the belief that KD coming on would have led to Boston dethroning GSW at the time, though in hindsight I am happy with how they have turned out thus far.

I disagree because It seems like KD never truly felt fulfilled with his two rings. In his mind he always feels like the little brother to all the other NBA greats he's competed with over the years. Its very obvious he's wanted more than that. As good as he's been, winning with GS was temporary and the thrill he felt there may never be replicated for the rest of his career from the way it's looking so far.

you are wrong about when they started with the can't get it done in the playoffs... Barkley is the poster child for that but it started before him ... still a good video but every all-time great that played in the Jordan era except Hakeem had this label attached ... it is not held against them the same now because they had to contend with the greatest of all time but back then it was a major media talking point

ok you're completely right but i find it really hard to look at how kd conducts himself and credit him with the self-awareness to have actually done any of the reasoning that it'd be nice to credit him with. it looks to me like he made the smart decision leaving okc for golden state, and the fact that fans got mad about it has STILL yet to stop shocking him.

Yes it was a smart business basketball legacy move for himself but what's annoying about him is how much of a sensitive selfish brat he is. The day teams stop catering to him is the day he throws the ultimate temper tantrum on the internet. In my opinion he was never the best player on the planet and never better than LeBron. He is one of the greatest offensive players of all time but that's it. Eventually he will end up on the wizards when no one else wants him.

Still thinking about how that Nets 2021 title would've changed so much around the league. KD assembles the axis of evil in BKN and proves he can win without Steph, gets Harden a ring, and Kyrie gets 2. 3 titles and 3 FMVP's for him might move him to top 10 all time. Giannis might not re-sign with the Bucks. Insane how much changes if his foot is a couple inches behind a line

there are actually pretty legitimate reasons to question wilt's actual impact on wins at the highest level. he's obviously incredible, but he has more warts than just looking at his box score stats would tell you (which is like 99.99999% of fans because there is such little footage of him)

Agree with it being a good choice for him in the short term, hard disagree with it being good for his legacy/long term. It’s been absolutely terrible for that and will continue to be so. I think the meta commentary from a basketball media/discourse perspective is post-hoc rationalisation, he really did make a move to make his life easier and won cheat rings. The reason why it’s considered fine to judge it this way in sport but not anywhere else is because the NBA is a closed system designed specifically for basketball players to compete. He opted to no longer compete with the people that were better than him. Like; it’s made to compensate you extremely well for you trying your best, and you stopped trying. And now I think about it we do judge that negatively in other people too. Concepts of betrayal, poor attitudes, softness, etc. all existed prior to basketball. Just seems like cope IMO. It did tarnish his reputation, it’s inarguable.
@albericponcedeleon2696
@albericponcedeleon2696 8 месяцев назад
Big facts on post-hoc analysis being a foundation for all time discussions. I think the 2022 playoffs really made his move to GS look worse. GS didn't just win one after him, they won against the very same team that made KD look as bad as I've ever seen him in the playoffs (strictly speaking about eye test, not stats). Curry's my second favorite player all time (after MJ), but I always gave KD the benefit of the doubt about being the better individual player. That 2022 season made me realize after the fact that Curry was very likely not just the greater player, but the better player all along and I was wrong all those previous years. Although I do think that if KD wins a third ring most of the noise will go away.

Its funny because everyone hates Durant for "choosing the wrong way" but everyone is rooting for Dame to win with Giannis. I know Dame spent way more time in a bad team, and the Bucks isnt a sure thing like GSW of the old, but is funny that everyone is like "man, Dame is right, he needs that ring, he deserves it" and stuff like that Its like you have to "suffer" for an unspecified amount of time to be okay to chase the super team
