Thanks Taetro! This video was a quick overview of how you use the Launchkey Mini MK3 for a live looping performance... Could you do a more in depth video of how you set everything up? I'd love to use this controller more fully, but every time I try, I find that I seem to be missing something, not quite understanding what I have to do to accomplish what I have in mind. I'd love to watch you set up the drum racks, clips, quantization, and effects. Thanks for continuing to put out helpful content!
hey! not sure if you found out how to do this yet, but if you search Rachel K Collier’s “How to Perform with Ableton Live” course on teachable, theres an ENTIRE course breakdown of this. she’s who i’m learning from now and I’m soooo happy I found her.
Man that was one hell of a timing bro, i just wanted to pick up a mpk mini mk3 TODAY, thanks to you i went for the launchkey one, appreciate your work! ❤️
Loving this video so much, very informative and also nice to see your process and how you map things. Definitely allows the performance to be more creative, I’m inspired for my next live loop beat!
Thanks Taetro this is a really helpful video. I am a very recent convert to Ableton Live after using Reason for the last 12 years with live looping performances being one of the many reasons for wanting to change. Now I just need to try it out with my M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini which I think has most of the same functionality as the Launchkey.
this is beautiful to see! I study your videos as well as Rachel Collier and y'all are the some of the most informed live performers I've seen. thanks so much for the help! I can't wait to dive in ✨
Novation Components makes it easy to create Custom pages and mappings. Don't forget that the Launchkey Mini Mk3 has a Midi Out, which means you can use for external synths as well without the need for computer. Just a USB power source. In fact, if the Launchkey was battery operated, it would be really amazing. An alternative to the Akai, Arturia MiniLab which gives you a lite version Analog Lab. Great keybed and knobs galore. It might be slightly more expensive but not significantly.
Thanks for this tutorial Taetro! I was so tempted to get the Akai MPK mini MK3 cos of it's really super cool looks (for all the different colors), but watching your videos, I got to learn about the Novation Launchkey mini and I now see how it is so much easier to use the LaunchKey for live performance, looping and recording. I just wished the LaunchKey came in super cool colors too! Functionality wise, I like the LaunchKey better!
PS: sorry my english
Hey Taetro! Great video once again, thank you! You cannot imagine how many of your tutorials and performances I've been watching these days since I finally started to practice for live performing and using again the Launchkey midi that I bought 3 years ago following your recommandation (and it was one of my first pieces of gear so... U forever in my
I bought bought a Launchkey MK3. It's my first MIDI keyboard. I've played guitar off and on for the last 20 years and messed around with FL Studio a bit but really needed something to make getting the creative juices out easier.
I really enjoyed this video. I’ve been wanting to learn how to do loop based performances for fun I also like making beats normally. But I picked up the bigger 25 key launchkey I’m still deciding if I want to exchange for smaller one.
hi, in which mode was the launchkey when you could play drums (blue) AND use the other pads for effects/toggle (red)? custom pad mode? in the novation components app only midi notes can be assigned to the custom pad mode, not midi-cc. Could you please explain how you made this process you showed us? Thank you! :)
no magic going on here! I simply have the pads in drum mode the entire time (until the very very end), and just midi map the pads I want to use for fx. You can still map the pads in drum mode!
Got launchkey 61 mk2 ive been using that for years and it is still the best midi controller i have. I'll probably buy mini mk3 soon because obviously my 61 key is kinda hard to move around with... anyways great video keep doing that!
Hi man! sick skills and video explanation! did you map the indiviual kick and hihat stop button from drum rack on those 2 red pads? I also hear 1 pad playing hi hat at 1 beat and then the next pad playing 1/2 notes of that same hi hat continuously. how do you set that up? thanks!
I have two tracks armed in my default template so the drum pads and keyboard each have their own track. Have to control+click to multi arm, then set the key track to midi 1 and pad track to midi 10 for an mpk default config.
Totally agree that scroll tracks and 'arm selected track' is crucial for live looping and crazy that there isn't a way to map these from ableton's midi mapping page. Good that the launchkey mini can do this (so can the Arturia minilab, looking at getting one of them) but my problem with both of them is that it requires TWO hands to do it - hold down shift with one hand then press another button track scroll. Why do the makers of these controllers never think about what live looping musicians have in their hands for performance? I've got violins, guitars, contact mics, etc - so I never have two hands free to 'select and arm next track', I need to do it with one hand or a foot! I think there's a way though - find the CC number that's being sent when you hold shift and track scroll, then in a custom map assign that CC number to a single pad/button/pot. Endless encoders would make more sense for scrolling tracks though. Nice tip about sustain pedal for the session record button by the way - thanks!
I m looking forward to stay in fl studio, which one of them is better and which is the best one under 120$? Btw i love your content very much. Intresting!!!
Love the Launchkey - I have the Mini and the 37 (full size keys, still compact, with pitch / mod wheels). Had the all-black version of the AKAI, but returned it: The keys all had sharp plastic burrs on the edge - I was very disappointed. My fingers were getting sore from scraping the edges after less than a half hour of playing. Have to say I don't get the appeal of detune / 'tape' effects. Just not my thing, I suppose.
I pretty sure I’ll be using Ableton Live but still trying to decide between Launchkey Mini 25 MK4 and the Akai Mini MK3 but no vids on the Launchkey MK4 really 🫤
Thank you for that great video Taetro! Do you have a elegant way to delete a recorded clip with the Launchkey Mini when you like to redo it for some reasons while performing live?
Love the video I was actually debating between these too. Would you still choose this over the akai mini plus? Or would spending the extra $70 for that upgrade be a better option? I’m brand new to all this so ease of use is something I need to consider
Thank you for this comparison! Does the Launchkey still beat Akai for the larger or higher end versions? Also, how does Arturia compare with usability for looping and creating? HUGE thumbs up
8:55 Akai MPK Mini has 8 pads, but you also have a Bank button for sounds, so in a result it gives you 16 pads, but the downside is that you don't have them all close at hand.
Are you using the Novation Launchkey Mini MK2 or MK3? I ask because of this review that says that the MK3 is worse for looping than the MK2, "I use my Launchkeys for live looping and the way they changed some features makes it less than ideal for commonly used features while live looping. There are no longer dedicated buttons for features that the MK2 has. For example, in order to switch to "In Control" mode, you have to hold down the new "Shift" button while simultaneously pressing another button. Another example is the track buttons for switching through tracks left and right. In order to do this, you have to hold down the "Shift" button as well, but what makes matters worse is that the track buttons are on the other side of the keyboard from the "Shift" button. I like to do live loops during my performances, so I switch tracks quite often, but this is no longer feasible with the MK3 since I have to use both hands to switch tracks, which leaves me with no free hands to continue playing on the keys. "
Thanks for the great comparison video! Super helpful. I'm thinking of getting the Launchkey Mini Mk3 now. Would you recommend it today? Since it's been 3.5 years since it's release, I'm wondering if I should wait for the Mk4?
but there is another mini key that I've been hearing from a lot of people lately and you haven't put it in the competition and I'm talking about the Maudio oxygen pro mini with 32 key. will we see it in a future review?
Hi Taetro, late to this video but I have a question about the launchkey if you happen to see this. When recording drum MIDI into Ableton with my launchkey (using drum rack), occasionally I accidentally hit the pitch bend strip and bend the notes out of tune, and they stay out of tune during playback AND if I re-record them in that section. I'm wondering if you know of a way to reset the tuning after making this mistake. Thanks!
Hello Taetro, I really like your videos and I really enjoy your content. I have the Lounchkey mini myself, but I was wondering how you managed that in costume mode your pad lights weren't on when the effect was switched off? Can you make a video about this? 🙏 Greetings Paul
Exactly de solution I was looking for, I really thought that the problem with the arm and the record quantization was just my device getting rusty or something hahah xD
Greatly enjoying your videos, great information. Question. I use NI Maschine MK3/Software. Unfortunately, NI has not created a 25 key controller that has both pads/keys like the LaunchKey which disappoints me. When I'm mobile, I have to use the NI M32 w/the Micro MK3 to have both features...NI is slow to the mark with this option. I'm interested in purchasing the Launchkey and would appreciate it if you could do a video with mapping the LK pads to the Maschine software so that when I use the Maschine Expansions, I have the full kit mapped across the LK pads. I did reach out to the NI community, but the response I received was unacceptable...it was almost like...just use both, we're not/don't need to compete with our competition. WTH! Thanks in advance for anything you can do to assist. Peace and Blessings.
Can I choose on lounchkey track for rec/stop/play for external instrument like guitar/bass processor? Type some instruments from working from midi, type drums/synths and some for only control? Or for it push will way better?
Thanks for the vid. Both of these are USB... any reco with something with regular midi and with a similar form factor (Arturia key/drumstep is too big and the pots are grossly sticky after a while) ?
New subscriber btw…….So I been using FL Studio since it seems more easier to use and understand( tho I haven’t use other DAWs) and I bought a AKAI mpc mini 3, but been having issues with it lately, when I use the pads they play the drum I have selected on the channel rack of fl studio, but not all the drums I have add it to it, and I try mapping them thru FPC, but they either play two drums pieces(ex: kick and hihat at the same time) or they just play double for some reason, and sometimes it doesn’t even let me map the pads, any help??😅 or should I sell it and get a new midi, my budget for a midi right now is 200$, also should I try a new DAW??
hi taetro how did you make the pads half portion belong to drumming and half again belong to customized mapping, even moving around the tracks and those customized pads still remain? are the 16 pads supposed only can be under 1 mode at 1 time? for example if you set on drum mode then all 16 pads are for drumming, aren't they?
I was trying to get that beat pack I’m not seeing that link can u please lmk how to get the beat pack and thanks for this tutorial I just bought a launchpad mini keyboard
Hi Taetro, I'm watching all your videos looking for a solution, how did you set that when you go to "custom mode" on activation or deactivation of an effect the led turns on or off?
For 6:05 Akai mpk mini mk3 do have track switching function...by pressing program change then hit pad 1 for track1 or pad 2 for track 2.....try this!!!!!!!
hi @TEATRO i`m literally beginner and i want to buy a midi controller, of course i think at akai mk3 mini (All black) for making lofi music but now after this video i don`t think so... which one is good for me ... i like this launchkey mini from novation but i don`t like the white key ... is possible to find skin cover (sticker something) ?? I repeat I`m really beginner, give me a point, please ^_^
Do it work on mpc software using all 16 pads ? I’m debating on a mpk mini mk3 or mpc studio, I want the keys of the mpk but all 16 pads of the mpc studio. I have the full version of the mpc software and if you can use all 16 pads plus the keys on the lanchkey my problem will be solved.
Taetro i love your channel and style too! I know this is a 2 month old video but hopefully you answer, where do you buy your stickers that you got on your keyboards by any chance?
Been thinking which midi to buy as my first one but I see so many good videos on many controllers that confuses me a little bit jaja any recommendations ?
I’ve watched so many of your videos and I may have missed this or it may not even be a thing. I see that so many talk about midis and how they relate to abelton or compatibility with. I use FL studio and I was wondering, is there a midi that may be more compatible with FL over Ableton?
@@Taetro oh wow!! Thanks!! I don’t think I’m at that point yet. I received a launch key for Xmas and felt it was too in depth as well as more abelton based. I exchanged it for the akai play by mistake and meant to purchase the akai mk3. I’m still learning a lot about controllers and FL studio compatibility. I wanted to find a controller that was more widely used to find more content to learn as much as I could. I no where near the live looping, I just like to make music and beats for myself
i don't think it was a mistake - you can still do a lot with what you have. the key here is that FL studio is probably not the best DAW for live looping. Ableton Live has a free trial and a less expense intro version you can check out
i also use a Launchkey but its the 61 key version because i like to use the extra keys. but for fooling around, the Akai is fun to work with. so, it seems that they're made for different purposes, and limiting yourself to one piece of hardware is going to limit your choices.
I just bought Akai mpk mini one day ago.. I "tried" to play like 1 hour with this crap. I sent it back to shop because of Pads and key that are no velocity (or at least kind of when you play with full level for 5seconds). You have to SMASH like wack-a-mole. I bought the launchkey Mini MK3 and for god's sake, what a difference. Guess it's my new girlfriend.
@@Taetro let me explain sorry.. I tried everything but with ableton 11 is not working.. it works perfectly fine with live 10 but after checking everything.. on 11 is not working so I’m working with a free version of ableton 10 with another account but.. idk why it’s not working on 11…
I shudder to think of the hoops and personal information you must have to give up to get a “free” product from the corporate evil that is Unison Audio.
