Shakespeare wrote, "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers." Contrary to what many may think, this line was actually intended to praise the lawyer's role.
One of his characters in ''Henry VI,'' - Dick the Butcher - was a rebel who thought that by disrupting law and order, and sowing chaos -- in this case, by killing all the lawyers - he could become king. Shakespeare clearly then meant his statement as a compliment to attorneys and judges -- recognizing their important role in justice and in society.
We're not sure if Shakespeare was a lawyer. But Marvic Leonen is most likely better versed on the question of why lawyers matter. He has molded and helped to create lawyers for all of his professional life, as a practitioner and advocate, as a teacher and dean of the UP College of Law, and now as the youngest justice of the Philippine Supreme Court.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I hope that Justice Leonen is aware that this talk inspired a lot us during our journey in law school and in the Bar Exams. It was an honor to have taken up the Bar Exam under his chairmanship.

1. because the law is real for people who need the law; 2. because the law evolves (i.e. writ of kalikasan); 3. because the law helps us understand ourselves; 4. lawyers are a luxury because you only go to them in times of need

I clap on my own every time I finish rewatching this! Most, if not all, persons in the intellectual community don't buy the attacks against this great man. With his current role and everything he has been through, he is definitely an important building block of our democracy especially the legal system! Salute all the way to Associate Justice Marvic Leonen!

Hail the next Supreme Court Chief Justice! The innovations he introduced have made law and justice more humane and accessible to the underprivileged. There is hope for Filipino society.

Nagenroll ako sa law school not because gusto ko but gusto ng parents ko. It was a sudden decision, hindi ko nga naisip na papasok ako. This is all so sudden, at hindi ko naman talaga gustong mag law school, pero eto na 'to. Pinapasok ako ni Lord, and I know He'll be with me, makakapagtapos ako at magiging Atty. I'll do my best kasi ayaw ko rin magkaroon ng regrets.

is he, a lawyer with no balls can get rid cases in a short period of time is that a good lawyer for you who plays "Justice denied, Justice delayed" good talker but not doer. Wtf!

@@renatzkigab2616 How so? The SC is a collegial body that already means that cases are heard in divisions not by individual justices. The division only suggests how a case should be settled and that suggestion is circulated among the 15 justices clandestinely so we do not know how many suggestions are already circulating in the court. To blame one justice of incompetence is to blame the whole Supreme Court as incompetent as it is a collegial body where all justices have a say on how a case should be settled.

lawyers live off litigation...There is a fundamental problem right there. I'm pretty sure shakespear tried to express his complete disdain for all lawyers without exception the way he could at the time.
