Why LESS is MORE | A Monk Explains Minimalism
In a world where we are taught to want more and acquire more, Buddhist monks on the other hand, seek the opposite. We want less. (and please understand the word "want" with proper context). In this video, I wanted to share how having less can bring peace.
Many men from around the world have come to Thailand to ordain to be Buddhist monks, and many of them report that having less actually brought them inner peace. I wanted to share some insight into why that is. I hope you enjoy and can take this concept to apply to your daily life. #monks #monk #minimalist #buddhistmonks

My life has shown me the best way to rid of things you don't need. I've moved several times over past 15 years , with each move my stuff was getting smaller and smaller , with each move I was becoming much more intentional with any purchase simply because I couldn't bare the thought of dragging any unnecessary burden with me should I need to move again , it came with an experience of having to pack and move a lot of unnecessary stuff at first, but it did eventually proven to teach me valuable lesson of being intentional with any idea of buying anything new Absolutely agree with you Nick , less thing you own , less things you worry about

I'm currently living in a van with my girlfriend, and the process of condensing my belongings to the bare necessary has been very eye-opening. I had accumulated so many things; as a guitarist, I fell into "How many guitars do I need? Just one more" and ended up with 30 at one point. As a car/motorcycle lover I had five cars and five motorcycles, all needing various repairs and maintenance. I had twelve pairs of shoes and almost TWO HUNDRED tee shirts. I remember trying to sell and give things away, being surrounded by a sea of things that I thought I loved and needed to be happy... and feeling imprisoned. I was tied to a place I didn't want to be, drowinging in things that I have traded precious years of my life to own. As I continue living nomadically, I'm learning more and more what I really need to be happy and it is surprisingly not very much. I realize that the more things I get rid of, the more free I feel.

Seeing minimalist video showed how storage places came to be and why families need bigger homes if they think do at time. storage places is just rental space for crap u forget u had and times it get sold to buyers if u stop paying the rent for the space. and some space has a mix of crap and good stuff that buyers can use or just sell anytime. and now why some homes are like huge cause the builders read families want space so u gonna pay more for space anytime. so untill u buy the house al at once u just renting til it paid off. but u still got bills to have needs while u live there anytime. but this video shows all we spend to maintain ourself anytime and why we go broke cause some or many feel u need so much cause try be like others anytime by chance.

Now I'm getting rid of them. It's a process eliminating things and changing. I just no longer need or use all that I had. I took up so many hobbies for the benefit of others and my children. Now I get to enjoy passing my hobbies and "stuff" to others. ie. All my camping gear. I had 10 marvelous years camping with friends and family. And it was fun to accumulate. Now I'm ready to pass it on to another young family. ❤😊 Cheers!

It's true what you say. Probably is we have a world economy based on people buying stuff. I read in France the government is passing a law that products must be or partly repairable. How many of us could repair a toaster, bike? The cars sold are mostly impossible to service so people have to go to a Ford dealer or equivalent. Jeff Amazon Besos is like the old East India Company that more or less created the British Empire through a monopoly on trade. If Amazon invests in a area the politicians are powerless to do or say much. I had some rich friends and they never showed logos or talked about what they bought (they had grown up with money, professional families and never thought about it). In contrast I follow some friends (I've never met) on social media from countries like Jamaica, Ghana and other poorer countries. Often I see them or their kids and families posing for a photograph next to a SUV or something they don't own or a showing a mobile phone. There a logo on a shirt, dark sunglasses and a SUV means you are somebody to be taken seriously. Hope we can move to different model. Though our politicians, even Biden now is reluctant to change the model.

@@simeonbanner6204 I worked as a chauffeur for 5 years driving all kinds of rich or successful or influential or famous people. One of the things I noticed, of those that I drove to or from their homes, was how many of them had very little in their homes. Lots of empty space, and carefully chosen and arranged things here and there, and little else. They did live in nice homes with expensive things, but not very many things. Many of them seemed quite pragmatic about what they had, and that they probably didn’t go buy something new without considering whether they should first get rid of something else. I didn’t grow up that way myself. I grew up in a relatively poor family, where everything seemed limited or hard to get, so you valued what you had and you took care of it, but you rarely got rid of it. I still have too many things to this day, but I still remember the lessons I learned from some of the “rich” people I worked for (and some of the lessons I learned from other “rich” people who had lots of things). I learned that I want to learn how to have less, and to be thoughtful and considered about what things I have and what things I want. I don’t actually want much.

I think as we age we understand this concept a little better. After the loss of both of my parents and having to deal with the possessions left behind in their estates I got a wake up call regarding, do we own our possessions or do they own us? I have simplified my own life getting rid of a lot of the chaos that surrounded me, which freed me from the stress of these items. Where will I store them, will I use them, can someone else make better use of them? I came up with my own "uniform" of sorts and considerably downsized my wardrobe to "uniforms" that fit my true and real life, instead of buying what fit the life I wanted to be living. I still have possessions but find far more peace in the space and nature than I ever did in the chaos that was my life filled with possessions. Thank you for explaining the difference between the lifestyles and for explaining minimalism more. I strive for a more minimal lifestyle but lack the discipline required for the lifestyle you have chosen.

In December I ended up homeless in Seattle. It was a miserable and horrible experience. I was in a tent on a sidewalk. But there was one big benefit of it: it forced me to get rid of everything I couldn't carry. Including my own ego. It taught me a deeper compassion than I otherwise would have known. Now I spend most of my spare time advocating for the unhoused, helping them. I was always kind of into minimalism, but found it hard to part with certain things I had clung to for over a decade. Or longer. This made me let go. I was only homeless for a few days before getting help from my family and escaping it. But that experience may have been a turning point in my life that changed me. I am far from mastering the self. But I am better than I was. I think it was a necessary tribulation. As Rumplestiltskin says: all magic comes with a price. Now I have a great job and am making a huge difference. I have more friends than I ever have.

@@cocofit9498 I think - well, I know - this is true for millions of people. Not living one's truth means u live your life based on what others are expecting you to be. The paradox is: When you love yourself because you are valuable just because of who you are beyond all the masks and external expectations - that makes you more able to be what others need you to be. But then it's real. Hehe - that's kinda deep. It doesn't matter if you don't have a nice car anymore. It doesn't matter if you don't have the largest house, it doesn't matter that you aren't rich - because you are truly rich when you are able to connect with yourself and the people around you - and in being that happy person, you get to make others happy.

They don’t try to prove anything to any one and have other avenues in life that make them happy rather than stuff. Also, while living this way, they meet others who do live on minimum wage and it makes them a more grounded, well-rounded, and sympathetic human to the point that they usually donate some of their money to public schools, parks, and community resources.
