THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I love Jeff Minter and his unique style of games and first heard of him in 1982! Without this video I wouldn't have known about this collection. Dug out my switch and purchased it straight away! Now enjoying Gridrunner all over again! ❤

I love Attack of the Mutant Camels. I didn't know about this collection until now, and I have just bought it on Steam. Thanks for the video, John!

I had no idea about this collection John, thanks for a great video, really looking forward to checking this out. Brings back such great memories of my C64, Attack of the Mutant Camels and Hover Bovver spring to mind straightaway.

This video just made me remember my childhood, getting a tape of 'revenge of the mutant camels' for Saint Nicolas celebration (national holiday in the Netherlands) for my beloved Commodore 64. I remember back in the day, even as a kid, I found this game was that bizarre that I read up on who the hell Jeff Minter was 😅. Never thought about it again untill I saw this video. Definitely going to check out this collection 👍🏻

I think I'm going to have to pick this up. Really love Tempest 3000 and it'd be awesome to experience his other work.

Digital Eclipse work hard to produce a fantastic timeline and interface, documentary/history and playable game examples in a high quality package. Atari 50 and now Llamasoft/Jeff Minter.

His recent stuff is great too. Polybius is super trippy

It would be great if he could fix the music problems on Tempest for Switch, and make the menus easier to navigate. This is like the only game I've ever played that has all these original music tracks that are actually really good, but I'll never get to experience both because of my skill level plateau AND because of glitches simultaneously (which cause music to repeat or abruptly change during gameplay). Reminds me of Pinball Arcade on the Wii U and how that was handled (it wasn't).

Minter is a legend. Tempest 2000 and Gridrunner are a couple of my favorites. Is this download only? Thanks for reviewing it. Not much exposure/advertising for it. Take care John.

My introduction to his name was AotMC on C-64. Although, I probably played Gridrunner first. Amazing guy. Thanks for the vid. Is this or Karateka available physically?

Good video but your use of past tense was weird. He’s still alive and active, so saying “who he was” is not grammatically accurate. Drove me crazy, as a fellow educator!

Jeff Minter is extremely important and relevant. His work alone on Tempest / 2000 / 3000 / 4000 is incredible.

Interestingly enough, Jeff Minter has his own RU-vid channel. He posts a video daily of him interacting with sheep.

Good point, playing Llamatron again would be awesome. Used to play a ton on my Amiga. Even inspired me to make a knockoff, but based on Lion King (Llamatron is better ;) )

The Gold Master Series is a tribute that resembles a visit to an art exhibition in digital media. And in the case of Jeff Minter it is Author Video Game Design. An extraordinary work of compilation, giving light to the founding pillars. I hope the collection keeps growing, this is a way of preservation, awareness and diffusion. For me it was Super Gridrunner, a refined experience of the concept of its predecessor versions and Tempest 2000. Thanks for sharing, John!

The problem is Jeff M, is not the most well known programmer in the UK, that is Mathew Smith who made Manic Miner. JM takes other people's games and says they are his own, Mutant camels are The Empire Strikes back, Grind runner is centipede, Lamatron is Jarvis's Robotron (oh I hear that the ST versions on the collection are actually Jaguar homebrews). Having siad all of that I would still buy it, if it was on disc, it is not. So I will wait for a steam sale to pick it up.

I was not aware of Jeff Minter's stuff until I heard this collection was coming out for Switch. Decided to take a chance on it since I'm such a fan of retro games in general. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. My favorite games on there are the Commodore Vic-20 and Commodore 64 versions of Grid Runner. The new Grid Runner done by Digital Eclipse was really good too. Grid Runner is in my opinion easy to pick up and play but definitely hard to master. Keeps me coming back for more.

i remember playing llamatron off a shareware cd i got from the grocery store forever ago. I also played tempest 2000, but dind't realize that was him. just in passing, not a huge fan of the games - but I get the idea of why this matters now.

I would have David Jones as the most influential British programmer of the last 40 years...Blood Money intro alone is the 90's and there's those smaller hits like lemmings and grand theft auto 😂

That is great but… i will only buy it on physical. Same for the Making of Karateka. And if they dont make such versions quickly, i will forget about it. They are losing LOTS of potential clients by not releasing physical versions right away.
@johnhancockretro
@johnhancockretro 5 месяцев назад
Not really, statically speaking, 89.5 percent of games sold in 2022 were digital downloads. Like it or not, digital is the primary way people are buying games now. Physical games make up less than 11% of sales. Also, sales of the digital copies drive what games be put on physical.
@Horos_de_Vega
@Horos_de_Vega 5 месяцев назад
@@johnhancockretro we re not talking about the same demography here. The ones buying the Digital Eclipse games are the same who care about physical. They do lose lots of potential buyers here.
