I heard a great explanation of "why Lutheran" a few years ago while talking to a pastor we were interviewing to be our pastor and the question came up....why Lutheran?....his answer was, "because we are the only religion in the world that does not have an "if". Stop and think about that for a minute...we don't have anything we have to do to be saved. No works, no alter calls, no giving ourselves over, we just have to have belief, and be baptized, that's it. Our sins have been washed away by the blood of Christ, He came to earth, died for us, was raised from the grave. That's it, that's all we need. Ask for forgiveness, and you will be forgiven.
@JohnPeters-qz2zb
@JohnPeters-qz2zb Год назад
"...because we are the only religion in the world that does not have an "if" ... we just have to have belief, and be baptized". That sounds a whole lot like there is an "if". How about "we just have to have belief" full stop? A lot of denominations do NOT see water baptism as salvific. Just faith. Lutherans - at least the hardcore Lutherans - tell parents that they must take their infants to infant baptism because that's the way the infant is saved. When pressed on the scriptural problems they give all kinds of ifs and buts and of course the good old "remember; it's God's work - not ours. It's a gift!". But parents still have to do it, they say. And when parents do it, the infant gets new life, they say. Non-Lutheran bible believers on the other hand go with the clear message of scripture: That whosoever believe in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life (regardsless of any kind of so-called "sacraments" like infant baptism). When you read Luther and prominent Lutherans you realize that Luther wasn't very consistently "sola fide" and "sola scriptura" in his views. He still had a lot of tradition and sacramentalism in his thinking, and today it's right there in Lutheranism. It's just being toned down with nice rhetoric like "we are the only religion in the world that does not have an "if"".

I too was raised Catholic, but my father was Lutheran (Augustiana Synod). While I consider myself agnostic (too long a story to go into here) I am currently attending the same ELCA church he did when we first moved to Kalamazoo. I feel this is a way of getting in touch with my heritage and honoring my father. He once confided to me that he regretted signing the agreement that the Catholic Church required him to sign when he married my mother that all of us children would be raised Catholic and that he would not interfere with that. That was about the only time he ever discussed his faith with me. I find a lot of similarities between the two faiths. However, I had to laugh a couple of Sundays ago when they honored St. Teresa of Avila during the intercessory prayer as a "reformer". That she was indeed, but her idea of reform and Luther's were two different things! Both of them must be rolling in their graves. In fact, I jokingly asked the organist (a long-time friend), "Are you sure this is a Lutheran church? Because it sure feels Catholic to me!"

@bpowell7999

That's a good point, but likely Christianity is declining in their countries BECAUSE they are mainly Lutheran countries. First comes very liberal viewpoints, then the church adopts them, then society spirals downward. We are seeing this here in the US with the ELCA church. When you conform your religion to society, this is what happens. "Humans must be changed by religion, not religion to humans" Giles of Viterbo, 5th Lateran Council 1512

Despite all of it's problems I think that Roman Catholicism is an easier system to defend than Lutheranism. The Catholics can just appeal to the authority of The Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church and Holy Tradition whenever their doctrines don't make a whole lot of sense. The Lutherans cannot do that. So they have to use clever rhetoric to defend e.g. their ideas of baptismal regeneration through infant baptism. So if I was a Lutheran I would be very tempted to just accept the full package of Roman Catholicism instead of trying to defend the light version of Lutheranism.

I´m pentecostal (methodist) from Chile, but I really love the Lutheran church, and I appreciate the tradition, I believe we are 1 church, and continuing from the apostles to today, I don´t like the "philosophy that some evangelicals and most pentecostal have that all "catholic things" are bad things", I think they focus too much on not being like roman catholic even when that means changing our traditions to "new ones". I love ancient music, liturgy, robes, even episcopacy. Sadly in my city, there isn´t any Lutheran church, and the 2 Lutheran denominations in chile are very "contemporary style" so I prefer to be at my current church where at least we maintain many traditions from Methodist, like having bishops, annual conferences (assemblies), singing hymns, not signing much contemporary music, women, and men dressing formal, etc. and even when are pentecostal are not charismatic, It´s Classical pentecostal, I could say it´s an episcopal methodist church that accepts the gifts of the Spirit, but maintain much doctrine and order in the services and administration. God bless my Lutheran siblings, and of course my all of my other evangelical siblings (in Chile we say "evangelicos" to all Protestantism). God bless the church :)

So when people consider being 'Lutheran' , an important distinction must be drawn between Confessional (Book of Concord) Lutheranism vs. watered down, revisioned Lutheranism which implicitly or explicitly rejects the confessional tradition (compromising with contemporary evangelical Protestant theology , plus a low view of the Church and a low view of worship , with happy-clappy liturgy instead of traditional Divine Liturgy) or even worse , a modernist Lutheranism that has fallen into rank unbelief. I'm curious about how many confessional Lutherans there are in the U.S.A. ? I'm guessing it's a very small community. *Pastor Cooper, if someone was to go looking for the kind of Lutheranism you are teaching , where do they find it ?* Of the self-consciously Confessional Lutherans I know there are the AALC , LCMS, WELS . Are there others ? As both modernist and "evangelical" churches implode , do you think people who are looking for a robust Christian faith will discover the Lutheran Church ? (I put "evangelical" in quotes because I mean how the word is commonly used in the American context , not the classical understanding of the _Evangelische Kirche_ as it was used in the original sense in the Lutheran Reformation. Maybe as the now tarnished term "evangelical" is discarded by the emerging/missional/progressive/neo- ____________ churches ,whatever they are calling themselves now , it can be reclaimed in all its' fullness by English-speaking Lutherans? Sadly the word evangelical now seems to be identified with a certain political ideology. )

Very nice, thank you. I was especially struck by the deference expressed to the early church, as seen, for instance, in Lutheran liturgical worship, sacramentality, etc. But then, why settle for just a glimmering, an echo, of early church worship, when you can have it in its integral fullness in the Catholic Eastern Orthodox Church? On what basis are Lutherans so selective in what is retained from the one, holy, apostolic church of the first millennium? Why would they not feel, rather, a necessity to reunite with the only church on earth in absolute, unbroken continuity with the Pentecost fellowship in the upper room?

A pointless question as Jesus is a mythical figure created by the early church to raise funds by threatening gullible people with hell if they did not pay up in his name. Sooo question: The term “Lutheran” was originally a derogatory term used against Luther by Johann Maier von Eck in the Leipzig debate of 1519. Obviously Luther didn’t like the term because he didn’t want a church named after him but to keep church unity (initially) and preferred, as you mentioned, the term “Evangelical.” So if Luther himself didn’t like the term, why is this church still called the “Lutheran” church? Why “Lutheran”?

No, salvation by works is the thing Luther railed against. He didn't like the book of James bc it doesn't emphasize grace alone as much as Paul did. How is it that Lutherans believe salvation comes from faith alone, yet it is the sacraments like baptism that grant us salvation?
@Mygoalwogel
@Mygoalwogel 2 года назад
You can only be saved by faith alone if you believe what the Bible says. Matthew 3:15 Jesus insisted that even John's baptism was fitting for them to fulfill all righteousness. A servant is not greater than his Lord. Matthew 3:16 In baptism, the Father claims the Son. The Spirit rests on the Son. Matthew 21:25 Mere water baptism is a gift from Heaven. Matthew 28:19 Make disciples by baptizing in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and by teaching. Mark 1:4 Mere water baptism = repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Mark 16:16 *Baptized believers are saved, unbelievers condemned.* Luke 7:29 Even water baptism is a public declaration that God is righteous. Luke 7:30 *Rejecting even mere water baptism = rejecting God's purpose for you.* John 1:31, 33 John knew beforehand that God would reveal the Christ through baptism. Acts 2:38 *Repentance and baptism = forgiveness and the Spirit.* Acts 2:39-41 3000 bachelors, virgins, wives, husbands, and *children of all ages received forgiveness and the Spirit in baptism.* The smallest can't have decided to repent in a mature way, but they were not excluded. Acts 8 Many early church Bible readers saw a distinction between the Spirit's invisible gift of repentance/forgiveness and the Spirit's visible gift of leadership/ordination. Philip the Evangelist could baptize but not bestow spiritual authority. Only the apostles could do that. Acts 22:16 *Baptism washes away sins.* Romans 6:3, 4 *Baptism is death to sin, death with Christ, and newness of life in Christ.* 1 Corinthians 1 Baptism must not turn into hero worship, cliques, and factionalism. 1 Corinthians 12:22, 13 On the contrary, baptism is unity in the one Holy Spirit in Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:29 Even superstitious baptism declares the resurrection of the dead. Galatians 3:27, 28 Baptism clothes every member of the body of Christ in equality. Ephesians 3:5 There is one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all. Ephesians 5:26 Baptism sanctifies the Church because it is the washing of water with the word. Colossians 2:11 Baptism is a works-free death, a cutting off of the flesh. Colossians 2:12 Christ was buried. You were buried with Christ *in baptism.* God raised Christ from the dead. You believe God raised Christ from the dead. Therefore, God raised you with Christ *in baptism.* This is all *God’s powerful work.* Hebrews 6:1-2 *Baptism is a basic foundational teaching. You can't say you believe in Jesus while rejecting his basic teachings.* 1 Peter 3:20 Noah was saved by water, not from water. The flood waters washed away much evil. 1 Peter 3:21 Baptism now *saves you!* Baptism is assurance/demand of a good conscience before God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This verse summarizes all that has been said above. The Bible does not only say that the Lord's Supper is done in remembrance: Matthew 26:28 Jesus calls it the blood of the covenant. Hebrews 9:20 The author quotes Moses saying the exact same words about real blood. There is no precedent here for saying "is" means "represents." 1 Corinthians 10:16 The bread and the cup are a koinonia (co-union/intimacy/participation/contribution/distribution) of the body and blood of Christ. 1 Cor 11:20 There is an objectively true Lord's Supper. Unreconciled schism within the congregation make it objectively not the Lord's Supper. 1 Cor 10:21-22 The Lord, whose name is Jealous, is jealous of his cup and his table. 1 Cor 11:23 The Lord specifically and personally revealed the Supper to Paul. 1 Cor 11:27 Misuse of the Lord's Supper is not just a bad reenactment. It makes you guilty of sin against the very body and blood of the Lord. 1 Cor 11:28-30 Mere reenactments do not require earnest soul searching on pain of punishment and death. Therefore true Christian faith in these words: "This is my body which is for you, … This is my blood of the new covenant," must take all into account. 1 Cor 5:11 We are not to eat even secular food with christians who do not accept correction. Guests, whose lives are unknown to the pastor, should be catechised first. "Revilers" (who insult our face value belief) are rightly excluded.

In layman's terms (I am a layman) the RC church believes all theology and orthodoxy are derived from the Pope, who is the final arbiter. True Evangeilical Lutherans (not the ELCA) believes that the Bible is the inerrant the Word of God, perfect and sufficient for seeking salvation, righteousness and knowing our creator. (ELCA differentiates itself by believing the bible contains some truth, but is not entirely true.) One of the most foundational statements at the beginning of the Protestant Reformation as well as a majestic definition of true Evangelical Lutheran was published in 1530, The Augsburg Confessions.

We're already in the same boat with Grace Alone, God Alone. After all, I have a soft spot in my heart for the Lutheran impulse, and a Catholic (universal) Church must have varied rites for stylistic choices.
