Exploring the Richness of Maharashtrian Breakfast Cuisine
Introduction:
When it comes to Indian breakfasts, our minds often gravitate toward the popular choices: Idli/Dosa from the South, Parathe from the North, Radhaballavi from Bengal, and the array of snacks and farsan from Gujarat. However, there’s a hidden gem waiting to be celebrated-the humble breakfast fare of Maharashtra.
1. Kande Pohe: A Nutrient-Packed Delight
Kande Pohe, a quintessential Maharashtrian dish, is made from flattened rice (poha) and sautéed onions (kanda).
Health Benefits:
Light and Digestible: Kande pohe is easy on the stomach, making it an ideal morning meal.
Rich in Carbohydrates: Poha provides sustained energy throughout the day.
Vitamins and Minerals: Onions add flavor and essential nutrients.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Turmeric and curry leaves in the recipe offer health benefits.
Cultural Context: Kande pohe is not just a dish; it’s a slice of Maharashtrian life-a warm, comforting start to the day.
2. Misal Pav and Vada Pav: Icons of Mumbai’s Streets
While Misal Pav and Vada Pav are well-known, they often take center stage during lunch or evening snacks.
Misal Pav:
A spicy sprouted lentil curry served with pav (soft bread).
Bursting with flavors-fiery, tangy, and aromatic.
A true representation of Mumbai’s street food culture.
Vada Pav:
The “Indian burger”-a spiced potato fritter sandwiched in a pav.
Simple yet addictive, it’s the lifeline of Mumbaikars.
Symbolizes the city’s fast-paced lifestyle and culinary diversity.
3. Sapre and Sons: A Culinary Legacy
Mr. Anil Sapre, the owner of Sapre and Sons in Goregaon West, embodies the spirit of authentic Marathi cuisine.
The Legacy:
Established decades ago, Sapre and Sons has been a culinary institution.
Patrons swear by its flavors, authenticity, and unwavering commitment to quality.

The only issue with Portuguese Influence on Marathi, Konkani and Tulu breakfast is the addition Refined Flour based viands like Pav and Buns. I eat the Bhaji and Misal with Normal Phulkas/ Chapathi. Misal is a store house of good protein. Steamed Kothambir Vadi is healthy.

Sapre is ❤️ Since childhood I've been visiting this place and it always gives a nostalgic feeling now whenever I get chance to visit. Great vlog! Also do try Ramesh Dabeli just outside Sapre, that's one of the best Dabeli you can get in Mumbai and very close to the authentic taste one can get in Mandvi, Kutch where Dabeli was originated.
