My wife and I own a Tesla Model 3 2018 for over 5 years now, it’s our only vehicle, we drove over 200,000km, including long road trips from Ontario to California across the USA, and from Ontario to Vancouver Island across Canada. We saved over $20k in gasoline so far. We may have lost between 6-12km to battery degradation (original range was 499km). We plug it every night on our driveway, whether we need to charge or not. It’s just a habit now. It’s our main way of charging, but on long road trips, we love the supercharging experience. Park & plug is cool, no need to even take out a credit card. While home charging is about 10x cheaper than gas, supercharging has increased in price recently and in practice is now “only” twice cheaper than gas (it used to be 3x cheaper). I would recommend to anyone to either buy a Tesla or wait until the agreements that the other automakers have made with Tesla to use their Superchargers (NACS) take effect. Usually 2024 or 2025, but check with them.

The issue wasn't a range issue for me. It was a recharge time issue. I'm not stopping every 1.5 hours to recharge for under 15 mins or an hour to recharge to go another 300(ish) km. Taking hours longer for trips I make multiple times a year. I won't go back to an EV till technology fixes this. It may work for 80% of my driving but I'm not renting a gas car for the other 20%.

I live in a rural area near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. In 2021 we bought a brand new 2021 Hyundai SantaFe Non-plugin Hybrid. In the summer, we average 6.5 liters per 100 km or 36 mpg. In the winter, we average 7.5 liters per 100 km or 31.5 mpg. We don't have to plug anything in, we just fill it with fuel and off we go. We also own a 2007 SantaFe with nearly 400,000 km on it and still going strong. It is now our workhorse for pulling a utility trailer or when we need two vehicles. It has a 3.3L engine and I know it uses nearly double the fuel of our non-plugin hybrid. In my opinion non-plugin is the way to go, it is exactly like driving a regular gas vehicle, but with significant fuel savings. The recovery braking converts the energy of stopping back in the battery instead of conventional braking, which just converts it to heat, and nothing recovered. One of the best decisions we've ever made.

In a blackout, you won't be able to charge your EV and you won't be able to get gas either because the gas pumps at the gas stations won't work. But I have 10 canisters that can hold a total of 50 gallons of gas. My Toyota Prius will get 50 miles per gallon and at the same time, I can use it as a small generator to power many of my small appliances like my fridge, TV, and all the electronics. My Prius will continue to work long after your EV runs out of power in a pro-long blackout.

$0.30/L equivalent fuel cost because EVs don’t pay their fair share to use the roadways since charging with electricity bypasses the 50% tax rate on gasoline/diesel fuel. It is only misinformation or disinformation that range and charger availability is a problem for most locations. Assuming one is driving within southern Canada, all one needs to do (in a Tesla) is get in the car turn on Trip Planning, and use the Navigator. There is no pre-trip planning required! It will tell you the percentage (within ~2%) of battery capacity at the trip end or at a Supercharger (SC) on the route if the trip requires a charging stop. Typically the charging time at a 250 kW SC is no more than the time it takes for a restroom visit and buying coffee and snacks. Assuming one has a home L2 charger and can charge overnight for $0.028 CAD/kWh (Ontario), one would always leave home with a full charge (LFP battery) so a person that drives close to the average daily mileage every day would never need or want to use a Supercharger. Over 2 years I have averaged about 12 SC stops on 6 days per year. So my total wait time (for charging) is much less than the time I would have spent at a gas pump!

So the whole premise is flawed and backwards. You are trying to replace a fully scaled out transportation system with all the supporting infrastructure. By producing a bunch of vehicles without the infrastructure . There is no where near the charging capacity to support this change and the electrical grid cannot support the load it already has . Gasoline is a source of energy . Electric is a storage system of energy . It will never be as efficient as gasoline . For running around your town. Electrical is great . For doing any sort of distance . Or for anyone in a rural area . It will never work. If the government and activists really believed in electric then we would be developing heavily in nuclear energy , because that is the only way you have enough source to supply the electrical grid for this new demand.

@davidcarruthers7086 Год назад
FYI: You can drive an EV in both the rain and snow. It also gets hot in Canada, but I wouldn't say that I see gas cars bursting in flames and a hot day. Here's some more info: Electric vehicles (EVs) do not catch fire when it rains because they are designed with safety measures to protect against water intrusion and short circuits. Several factors contribute to this: Water-resistant design: EV manufacturers take significant precautions to ensure that the electrical components, including the battery pack and wiring, are well-sealed and protected from external elements, including water. The vehicle's body and chassis are designed to prevent water from entering critical areas. IP rating: Many modern electric vehicles have an Ingress Protection (IP) rating, which indicates their resistance to water and dust. For example, an IP67-rated vehicle can withstand immersion in water up to one meter (about three feet) for 30 minutes without experiencing harmful effects. This level of protection ensures that normal rain or puddles on the road won't cause any issues. Battery enclosures: The battery packs in EVs are housed in sturdy and water-resistant enclosures that offer an additional layer of protection against moisture. These enclosures are designed to prevent water from entering and damaging the battery cells. Electrical insulation: The electrical systems in EVs are insulated to prevent short circuits caused by water exposure. Special materials and designs are used to minimize the risk of current leakage and other electrical faults. Vehicle shutdown: In some situations, when sensors detect a potential risk due to water intrusion or other hazards, EVs may automatically shut down to prevent further damage or unsafe conditions.

I was shocked to find out yesterday that in my city, Nanaimo in BC, free charges are on offer at some of our public parks. I don't understand how this works! EV owners can charge their vehicles for free and regular motorists are paying more than ever for the gas for their cars. I assume that the city is paying for the energy used to charge the EV's from the suffering citizen's ever increasing property tax bills. This is just plain wrong. It is salt in the wound that most EV owners are already rich, because the price of an EV is so very expensive that only they can afford them. The poorer in society, the regular gas-powered car owners, are paying more than ever for their fuel and also paying for the electricity used to charge the EV's for free!!!!!!!!!!!
