It has taken me YEARRRS to really understand what the body types really stand for. Seasonal color and kibbe has completely revolutionized how I execute my personal style. I have never felt more confident and have saved so much money and time shopping for clothes and makeup. I am almost 40 and I really wish I would have learned about this in my 20s. I cringe when I see photos of how I styled myself.

Some stylists feel they know better and the outfit is more important than the client. For instance they will take on trend pieces to dress their clients regardless of the fact it suits them or not. It's lacking in consideration and arrogance on their part, trying to remain relevant by keeping their clients in fashion. You can see many celebrities dressing in outfits that don't suit their kibbe type.

I noticed many stylists only know how to dress their clients in their own personal style. They’ll recommend the same style for everyone which doesn’t work. As a designer, I have to say that no body looks good in everything, not even skinny models. I can immediately sense when a silhouette or style is not maximizing their essence. Also, almost all the images you see are highly edited to make it work. Lastly, I agree that some people in the industry have very limited ideas of what is “fashionable”.

Since Kibbe’s systems have really taken off in the past few years, I think a What Not to Wear type of show where Kibbe himself (and maybe his wife too!) give people makeovers would be amazing and so educational!! We could so much more easily see ourselves in the bodies of more average people vs the celebrities that we compare ourselves to. I think it would be a huge success 😊

Omg I met this "professional" make up artist who styled one of my best friends for her wedding. When I saw the pictures of the first trial, it was TERRIBLE. My friend is a TR and this MUA had no idea how to work with her bone structure. I joined her for the second trial scheduled and the MUA's arguments for her method where so absurd. She kept talking about "balancing proportions" and pointing out EVERYTHING from my friend's face that needed to be "balanced" in order to look "harmonious". It was complete bs, meant to make anyone feel insecure and self conscious about their freaking bone structure. She kept doing high contrast, horrible bronzer that didn't match her neck and harsh, straight looking contour. I kept suggesting how to suit my friend's face better but she was very stubborn and diva-like. So I went full b1tch mode and attacked, calling her out, and she had to obey because she was getting paid lots of money and my friend wasn't willing to let anything slip on her big day. At the end she did a decent job but honestly, 1 star to that loser, would never recommend.

Kibbe style has made me love my width! I'm tall with an athletic build, so I always tried to dress in what I know now as Dramatic styles. I hated how it made me look like a linebacker and made me look disproportionate, so I thought I was just fat. Turns out I'm a Flamboyant Natural and now I can play with and against my body type to achieve the effect I'm going for in an outfit. It's so freeing!

I've meet few people who dismissed kibbe system because they felt it's limiting or, even offensive. But, I really think it's not about the system as much as their own mindset and prejudiced interruption. It's ridiculous how they think you can create something brilliant and creative without having a basic understanding for how it function. It's like baking a cake without a recipe .. no level of frosting or, decoration can save a bad base .

@@DonNadie756 yeah I agree with you. I'm a SD with a gamine essence so I definitely understand the struggle 😂 I think the book shouldn't have relied as much on essences, limiting each type to a specific essence, because it's a whole separate thing and it's not as simple as that. And unfortunately, I've seen it creating confusion for some .. I've seen new amateur kibbe creators who totally misinterpreted the whole concept, and are typing people according to what they perceive as their essence ignoring their lines and their overall Yin/Yang balance, which isn't helping anyone really. But, to be fair the book was created in a different time, there was still a lot to be learned and discovered. Nevertheless, I really admire kibbe's work, it's not perfect but, I think it's a nice start for knowing your shapes and lines before combining your personal colours and essence.

Yes. It seems like the seasonal trends are often catering towards ‘natural types’ or ‘classic types’ or ‘dramatics’ - and even though it’s marketed to everyone- it’s not really for everyone- or at least, these seasonal fashions are stretched very far to accommodate body types that don’t easily jive with the fashions on trend. It’s where the fashion world seems to ignore those intuitive categories. What works for one person, doesn’t work for another. It would be nice if designers and fashion trends were less robust. It would be nice if all different styles were always available and on trend. There are sometimes ways to adapt things now and then- but if all the clothing is for one style - it excludes the folks outside of that target audience… till the next season… or next season…

I could not agree more :) As a fashion designer I think Kibbe is extremely helpful. It doesn’t make sense to rely merely on intuition when designing or putting an outfit together, even if you have freedom and ‘vision’. Clothes aren’t just artpieces, they have to sit well on the body and you should be inclusive. If you’re experienced and have a trained eye, you may not need to understand body types, but you should have internalized the same general guidelines by trial and error

I have to say Thank You, Aly! Trying to learn about Kibbe’s body typing system is not easy. You helped me the most with figuring out the ideas of proportion, yin vs. yang, size of bones, amount of flesh, length of limbs and PRECEIVED HEIGHT. (Actual height is apparently not as important!) I’ve watch other RU-vidrs get frustrated with Kibbe and decide to come up with their own definitions, quantifiers and systems, which seem even more confusing and more about style aesthetics/“essence”. I don’t think I would trust or hire a stylist who wasn’t interested in my body type or my specific coloring. I’d wonder if their motivation was to make me look my best or promote themselves as an avant-garde fashion guru! Or trying to be connected with the top named designers! We all remember the worst dressed on the red carpets when stylists fail to promote their clients over the clothes. Most of us just want to look the best we can in clothes that compliment our bodies and make us feel confident and relaxed with our outfits. Thanks again for all your hard work to make this easier for us!💋💋

Thanks for the video! I super agree with what you are saying around @2:26. A lot of stylists have a great intuition and understanding of how to dress people head to toe. It's as if, in their head, they can see each person's individual essence without typing it into any category. And so, they don't think body typing is helpful at all and only constraining. But for people who don't have years of fashion and styling experience, I think the types can be a super helpful starting place. :)

@HumanimalChannel
@HumanimalChannel 2 года назад
The old Hollywood stylists show how well they knew bodies and worked so intuitively and were so knowledgeable. Stylists today perhaps want to project the idea that its thwirbpersianl taste and talent that allows them to get good results. Ego maybe.
@peacefreedomandwealth
@peacefreedomandwealth 2 года назад
@@HumanimalChannel I completely agree. I think they were very intuitive about the personal essence od each old Hollywood star. That's why you can distiguish Marylin Monroe from Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn. They were very different from each other, yet they had class and were stylish. Nowadays it is rare to say that a given stars has a personal style. They usually follow the trends or are submissive to the vision of a stylist, and it does not really matter whether it really suits them or not.
@elitelevellingup
@elitelevellingup 2 года назад
As a professional stylist and image consultant, I agree on many stylists don't like seasonal colour analysis and body typing because it's a little tricky to type one person in a particular category. But when I style my clients I always use kibbe body typing, essence, seasonal colour analysis, personality typing etc because dressing up with perfection is not just about body type or colours but it's a combination of personality, body type, colours, essence and many more aspects. It's a myth that one body type ( kibbe ) can't wear another body type clothing because of different lines, we all have our own romantic, dramatic, office, date, casual style. Not to forget there a ladies who know their kibbe body type still they love dressing very different from what it is recommended reason? Their personality is different and they feel at home, a perfect representation of themselves in those dresses.

That was some of the best constructive criticism I've ever heard. About that designer who does the huge, unisex aesthetic. It respects the artist having found their artistry while also pointing out how narrow and limiting it is. I also like the part about how some women just want clothes that fit with them without drawing too much attention. There's a certain respect Aly has for people I appreciate! It feels about wanting people to feel themselves and good in their skin. Not to be a statement that's about the clothes but disconnected from who they are.

Got my makeup done professionally for my prom and it look so awful. I went home crying because never in my life have I felt so ugly. It didn't suit my face, my style, essence or overall emotion. Completely horrible. My mother was so angry and sad, I think her heart broke a little. I wish I let her do my makeup. I removed it and applied my own makeup with the basic toddler-like skills and knowledge that I had. I think I only used mascara, a teeny tiny bit of eyeshadow and some colour on the lips - completely understated and still didn't really fit the occasion, but it felt a lot more natural on me. I rarely wear makeup so heavy looks do intimidate me as I'm not used to seeing myself like that, but a friend of mine always did a great job when doing my makeup. I don't know why professional stylists can call themselves that when they don't even understand body types, colours and essences of different people.

Watching the video again, it's so good. What I could share from my lifelong search why some things look different on me than others. About the waspish waist relates more to how the curve of your hips is rather than how tiny is your waist. If your hips are widest at the top looks different to your hips being widest by the thighs or in the middle between. That is just additional thing on top of Kibbe I need to consider when choosing a skirt or shorts. Not every R will have certain shape of hips, however within the type you'll see a lot of examples of "waspish". How full your behind is will also influence overall look.

I am guessing us SN that are petite are one of the most unusual types. The fact we are so short but not small, even when you are slender you look large so it’s very confusing. I go to a store and they assume that I am a 2 in size but I can be even a 6 in pants and they are surprised when they realize I am much more wide they thought. I also had an experience with a stylist trying to dress me more glamorous or classic and it definitely doesn’t work at all. Put me some sporty look and I am in my element.

Hi Aly, I have an unusually small rib cage (flat chest) and head in comparison to the width of my shoulders and hips that gives my body a long vertical line and a straight torso/waist but a curve waist/hip. This made it very difficult to place myself in the Kibbie system as I’m a moderate 5ft 4 height and everything about me is on a small scale. After very in depth study of all the body types I’ve finally settled on Flamboyant Natural thanks to your curvy Flamboyant Natural video. I recognised my body and features instantly unlike doing the test that had me all confused. The fact that I have a long vertical line due to my small head, elongated torso and limbs and width in my shoulders and hips makes me feel at home with the Flamboyant Natural. My face has blunt structure and width although my eyes and nose have some narrowness. I probably have a few more dramatic elements to my look than the text book FN but overall the Natural in me wins through. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge, it would be great to know what you think as there’s always an element of doubt in my mind.

Hello Aly! Just to say that I love your content! And it’s really tricky to find our essence… I already saw a lot of your videos, they are excellent but still I’m so confused about my body type. I made the test and analyze myself and the result is always soft classic… what happen is that I don’t identify myself in that essence… is that normal? Can I send you a photo for you to help me? Thank you for your time, regards from Portugal ☺️

Hi. At first I just wanted to say that you are amazing. Your knowledge and approach to the topic is unique. I would like to ask if there is a chance to help me determine my Kibbe type? P.I've been trying to do it for two months now and I'm no closer. All I know is that it oscillates around classic somewhere.

Stylists are only human - it's entirely possible to learn to style YOURSELF, your own self, better than any venerable professional could. The prime example is Ms Dita Von Teese, she has never had a stylist and has no need of one. She said that once fairly early in her fame she bowed to pressure (it's the "done thing") and decided to try working with a stylist. Apparently the woman picked up a pair of her vintage heels and said "these would be so cute with jeans!" and Dita showed her the door and never looked back! You can craft your own image and curate and protect it better than a stranger could - that's basically the idea if you lean all in to Kibbe, you learn how to live fully in your Image ID.

Personally, I love to dress simply with no fuss, but full of interesting textures, colors, and unique accessories. Also wish I didn't care too much about showing too much of my less-than-perfect body parts, especially after menopause and pandemic stress changed my normally very fit shape. It takes forever to get dressed just like I want to--slightly on trend, yet understand and inexpensive, not trying too hard. Online shopping has been very disappointing and too addictive.

Kibbe lover❤

Yes ! it's difficult to know for sure but she seems like an IxxP to me. My guess would be ISTP : she has a great understanding of how systems work and displays very precise observations of shapes, colors, texture... Also, I can see inferior Fe in her from time to time. Anyway, if she doesn't know about MBTI yet, I'm sure she would be super interested about it !

I think Billie Eilish’s Met stylist did her a huge disservice. In my opinion this is a situation where it was all about the clothes and not about what would look best on Billie. It’s really didn’t fit her body or personality it all. This is just one example of what you’re talking about.

The thing about stylists taking the tall moderate model-ish women. I see that a lot in a make up artists work. So many pretty faces with huge eyes, small nose and huge lips. Of course the make up is going to look great. what I want to see them to work on for example on hooded eyes and do the same look on them. so shame

What I also feel is that a lot of stylists use old information and don't translate it for today's clothing standards, so the clients tend to look very old. I seen this show with a teenage girl from Germany who was self conscious about her looks and the stylist transformed her into a Karen. They gave her a pixie cut and the clothes were very long and big. She looked in my opinion horrible.

I think, while Kibbe does get some things right, the problem with Kibbe are manifold and I think many stylists see the inherent flaws: - Kibbe is far from objective. He's a heterosexual white man with a preference for short, pear shaped white women. His system is not going to be universal. And since people are taking it as gospel, there is no way to universalise it to some degree (as has happened with 4 seasons-now way more than 12). -Kibbe doesn't harmonise features, it exaggerates them. Yangs get tips to look even more angular etc. This is not what a lot of people want. Stylists know: beauty is harmony, not exaggeration. Taken to the max, Kibbe can make people look like their own caricatures. That's why many stylists prefer the body shape system (fruits, letters, whatsoever) which is built to flatter. -Kibbe as well as the seasons are guidelines and those will naturally set limitations. This may be great for those who feel overwhelmed by the big world of fashion. Stylists however like to have some freedom. And I agree: sometimes you have to come out of that box and try something new. Your outfit in this video is the best evidence for that.
@rosawolke2788
@rosawolke2788 Год назад
Thank you, now I understand why I did not like the kibbe system and the outfit recommendations: it is about exaggeration when I want to create an harmonic/minimalistic outfit. Also I got the impression that recommendations for certain types really say that the recommended piece will look on a different types even worse. Some clothes just do not look good on anyone. But I do think there are some universal style guidelines that will work for everyone, regardless of body type & color theory.

I could agree and comment on almost every sentence! Those who hate color analysis usually love black even if it's horrible on them. Depending on black is just easy - and sometimes feels necessary. The crazy fashion world is fast-paced and shallow. IMHO the obsession w Flamboyant Natural is yet another way to snub traditional femininity. Now who would do that?! The crazy art world? For starters Modern Art's roots are in the communist movements of 1900s-1930s. it's DESIGNED to depress and demoralize - compared to Trad Western Art that inspires and uplifts. Jackson Pollack - a fraud who slung paint on a canvas - laughed all the way to the bank. Pablo Picasso - the most talented artist of the 20th C imho - was a brilliant sketch artist. He's often profiled as having "evolved" into cubism (speaking of ugly art!). But in fact he had a cycle of relationships w women. In the beginning he sketched them as beautiful madonna-like figures. As relationship fell apart he painted them in ugly cubist style. Picasso didn't evolve - he expressed his psychological problems in cycles using various art styles! Unbelievable how history tells us nothing about anything! :-)
