For me personally, Mario Party 8 had better boards and standard Mario Party board rules, while Mario Party 9 had a better minigame selection with better motion controls. If I were to make a compromise: I would take the minigames of MP9 and combine them with the boards and standard board rules of MP8, and you would have the definitive Wii Mario Party, at least in my opinion.
As Nathaniel Bandy put it: "Everyone's favorite Mario Party is the one they grew up with" and as a Mario Party 10 fan, I couldn't agree more Great video, Albert!
Yeah this is certainly a hot take, I do remember liking Mario Party 9 and having nostalgia but it ain’t my fav, but hey if it’s your fav then that’s cool!
For me, Mario Party 9 is memorable boards, amazing minigames (even though it introduced that awful 3 life mechanic and placement system), amazing music, and they tried something new. Magma Mine is my all time favorite Mario Party board, it only works with the car mechanic, and the rising lava past mid point is the coolest thing ever, you can even decide to make the cart go on side paths to have the lava get closer. Lastly, the game uses a lot of NSMBWii-like elements which I find cool. The only other Mario Party games to use elements from the main games are the N64 ones (especially MP1) using a lot of SM64-style sounds, graphics and concepts.
I was 10 when this game released, so I do have nostalgia for it & liked it as a kid. However I do think it unfortunately removed any form of players being able to show off their own unique strategies because of the linear board mechanics & that kind of destroys it for me. As a separate game mode I would love it. I still think that this game had a ton of love, charme & attention to detail put into it tho & it makes me sad that people overlook that aspect of the game, because it‘s unfair. I did prefer DS & 8 as a kid but 9 had way better minigames than 8!
Another Mario party 9 enjoyer right here, this video solidified my appreciation for this game 9 fold, this game has not right to be hated by the community like this just for being new and different from the rest of the series, they complain about the car being "bad" and they forget about the unique boards , the amazing Minigames, the great bosses, the banger ost, the cool side modes and the presentation and art style....probably the best in all of the series, this game has it all.
Funny. Because of Mario Party Jamboree, I took a look at the last Mario Parties (which I haven't played since DS). It's refreshing that someone is saying something positive about Mario Party 9. Nonetheless, I'm glad we're getting a classic Mario Party haha
I really like Mario Party 9 for its visuals and minigames. Plus, the soundtrack is amazing too! My personal favorite one being "A Starlit Sky" (the constellations theme).
I think part of the reason mp9 had ,at best, mild reception was because the gameplay shift from 8 to 9 felt similar to what happened to another notable mario Sub-series which I think we all know by now.
Did you play Mario Party Advance & The Top 100? I haven’t played them but it everyone says these games suck, I literally haven’t seen ANYONE defend them.
@@CaptainRillaboomArmenia lowkey I forgot those games existed when making that comment but I say top 100 was a test for superstars (which superstars did 1 million times better) and advance was just bad in general
Y'know, I'm not a huge fan of Mario Party 9, but I still think it's better than Mario Party 10, Island Tour, and Advance. Also you made some good points
Mario Party 9 doesn't deserve the hate it gets, but while the minigames are solid, I think Island Tour nailed the boss fights better **cough** bowser's ballistic blowout
As someone who grew up with this game, I completely agree! I remember whenever my family had guests over, my cousins/friends/siblings and I would always play this game! Also, not to be that guy, but 16:29, the only 2v2 minigame is Shell Soccer, which is also my favorite minigame of all time.
A huge step in the wrong direction, but it tried something new, so it is respectful in that aspect. In my opinion, the core gameplay being changed did have a big impact, I mean, not in a good way, not in a good way at all imo. In the end, this game is definitely not for me, but I would get why people like this, if they like games with more luck-based gameplay, this game would bring satisfaction to them. (And at least it’s not Mario Party 10, The Top 100, or Advance.) **throws up**
This game came out when I was 4 or 5, another family member got it for me and it was what introduced me to the mario franchise and I was obsessed with everything about it . Well sort of because mario kart wii was the first mario game I ever played. Everything about this game is so amazing, the minigames are fantastic apart from the luck based ones and the boards are so fun and the music is so fun as well. I still play it to this day and it holds a special place in my heart. Also the last thing I wanna say is that this game made me have an obsession with Birdo and I've loved her 2012, she's such a funny character and she makes me so happy whenever I play as her. Thank you for making this video and it's nice to see somebody else making a video about them loving this game because this game doesn't deserve the criticism that it got because at least Nintendo tried something different with this game instead of it being the same concept where you move around the board and collect stars.
To me the music is the best part of the entire game, easily my favourite soundtrack in the series. Aesthetically it’s also gorgeous, the UI is well designed and looks nice, captain events are pretty fun, the story mode with cute little cutscenes is rad, and the minigame and mode selection is one of the better in the series history. The biggest problems are the fact the boards theming could be a bit better and the fact that the car just doesn’t match the original Mario Party format. Still though, it gets way too much hate cause the stuff it does well it does really really well.
9:17 DK’s Banana Ruins is mistakenly named DK’s Jungle Parkway, don’t know if it was intentional Also, finally someone defending this game, I wouldn’t call it my favorite, but it’s solid
Mario Party 9 was the first game that brought me to the Mario series, all the way back in 2016. Despite never being able to play it, it still has a special place in my heart. As I just said, I never played it, so *take my "opinions" with a grain of salt*. It really seems like the car is the only thing holding it back. Literally everything else is top tier, as you said. That music gives me goosebumps. Minigames seem so fun and I'm so mad at NDCube for not bringing almost any of them back. And even then, car, despite not being able to be recieved so greatly, was a nice shake-up after 9 games (including DS) of pretty much the same core gameplay. NDCube just wanted to try something new. The only problem with that is that it wasn't well recieved... and they ignored everything and brought it back in MP10, which unlike 9 has almost no good things to compensate (soulless OST, no presentation at all, amiibo party mode that was basically just a square board and required expensive amiibo's to play, very little other extra modes, the only decent things are minigames and maybe bowser party although i don't have a lot of experience with it aside from, well, watching it on RU-vid). So yeah, basically they wanted to try something new, and put their heart into it. The main mode being badly recieved overshadowed every other top tier aspect of the game. Except maybe Island Tour and perhaps Jamboree (we'll see for this one tho), they haven't put that much effort and heart in any MP game after that imo. I really like monologues, if you couldn't tell.
Yes! I love this game! It’s amazing! The music, the character roster, the boards, everything!!! I’m glad people are starting to realize how good it is as of late! (And people who already loved it voicing *their* opinions too.)
I usually don’t comment on RU-vid videos, but it’s super rare that I see someone giving Mario Party 9 a chance so i really appreciate it! It’s also my favorite entry and the one I grew up with as well. I feel like the era people grew up with definitely influences their Mario Party preferences, but it’s still important to give others a chance. 9 isn’t trying to be like it’s predecessors, it was something new and different that was needed after 8 very repetitive entries. The car was a very interesting mechanic and I always had opportunities to play through the minigames. I do think the car was best as a one-time thing though, which is why I have an easier time understanding the backlash on 10. 😅 But yeah, 9 was really creative for its time and it’s a Mario Party, after all! There’s no way to have a bad time with a Mario Party game unless you’re looking for something to ruin it. This was a great video, thank you for seeing the good this game has to offer! :)
Also you’re right about the visuals, they’re amazing! The minigames are also the most fun to this day. There are so many neat things about this game that just NEED more attention! 9 does a lot of things right but they get drowned out in the hate for the things that could be better.
This game gives me so much nostalgia, as it was the first Mario party game I ever played. I remember going on RU-vid as a 7 year old just to watch people do the boss rush game which is a really cool concept. All in all I hardly remember the game but what I remember is that it was a great game
I didn’t hear anything on perspective mode. But other than that great review I too grew up with this game and watched a bunch of mini game compilations of the game
The amount of positivity in this comment section makes me happy that Mario Party 9 is getting less and less hate while getting more and more love, since it’s honestly the best Mario Party game for me… for now, because Super Mario Party Jamboree is looking absolutely incredible!
That is actually insane. You played TWO songs from my Channel. MAD RESPECT. Uhhh...yeah if I am being honest, 9 had the most consistent good minigames and they are very fun. Ain't even nostalgia, I just had a lot of fun landing on Bowser Spaces and ruining my friends relationship. Jamboree hype!!
I 100% agree with you Albert Boris! Mario Party 9 is such a fantastic game that I think deserves way more love. Not only that but this was actually the game that got me into the Mario Party series in the first place. Mario Party 8, Mario Party 9 and Mario Party 10 are so far the only ones I have and played. And out of these three, Mario Party 9 is by far my favorite one with the amazing Solo Mode, fun minigames, all the diffrent game modes and not to mention the Boss Battles. Mario Party 10 is a close second in my opinion, with the only thing missing in that game is the Solo Mode, but whatever is still a fun game. And Mario Party 8 is the weakest one in my opinion.
MP9 is great and fun imo. The biggest flaw is relying on DK's board to unlock/buy everything in the game. There's no reason to grind on the other boards. Mario Party 6 has the same issue where you just play Solo Mode over and over to fill the star bank.
I want to start off by saying I do like Mario Party 9 and I respect your opinion, but I do got some disagreeing to do here. The biggest sticking point for me is saying the game would have done way worse if it was like the older games, when I think the opposite would be more likely to be true. 8 was, for its time, the best selling home console entry in the franchise, second only to DS overall. The traditional formula had finally hit it bigger thanks to a bigger install base/a more casual focused ecosystem with the DS and Wii. So a more traditional 9, in my opinion, would likely have done better at least for sales. Super Mario Party is proof that opinions can change at the drop of a hat- loved at first, but despised over time. So there’s no way of knowing if a hypothetical 9 would have been received better. Otherwise, I can very much respect your stance on the single player, but as I reflect on Mario Party, what I play it for is a fun virtual board game, not a good adventure game. It’s basically the equivalent of getting ready to play Monopoly, but your group throws you into Dungeons and Dragons. And I do appreciate this game’s presentation, but I will say, looking back, it is one of the first signs of the stagnation of the franchise’s identity. So I do have to judge it accordingly. It has some very pretty visuals and great atmosphere, but played too safe in the Mario-verse’s bubble. But going back to the top, I do think this game is fun in its own right. It has solid minigames, the new mechanics are interesting, it has some fun side modes, it looks nice… it’s a really solid entry overall. I would probably put it closer to an 8, myself, but I think it is an overlooked and under appreciated gem for the series. But if you want my take on the best underrated Mario Party, that’s Star Rush. I loved that game, with all the cool modes it had.
Yo another MP9 enjoyer! 9 is also my favorite game in the series and literally all the things you mentioned in the video are the one of my reasons why I love this game so much! While it's nice to see the series getting back to it's roots, I still really love this game with it's boards (Magma Mine is like my favorite board in the series), minigames (Boss Battles are my favorite type of minigames) and side modes! Really great video, keep up the great work!
I’m Glad that You gave Mario Party 9 credit than everyone says because along with that, Mario Kart 7, and New Super Mario Bros. U, I appreciate Cars 1 and 3, Planes 2, Monsters University, Treasure Planet, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Bolt, Meet the Robinsons, Peter Pan 2, Shrek Forever After, Rise of the Guardians, The Great Mouse Detective, The Rescuers Down Under, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Chamber of Secrets, Deathly Hallows Part 1, and On Stranger Tides.
6 is the best, 9 is garbage it’s the beginning of the end times in the series and the minigames only happen if you land on the space, and don’t get me started on that car mechanic and that there’s no stars and coins
I think this game is good and fairly slept on I think it’s in my top three Mario parties it goes 9 up to 8 up to superstars I think the boards are really good same goes for the mini games and I love the bosses except for King Bob-bom I think this game needs to stop being viewed as the worst in the series
That’s cool and all, but I have the REAL reason why Albert Boris loves Mario Party 9 so much: Mario Party *9* isn’t actually the 9th Mario Party video-game released; that honour ironically goes to Mario Party 8 since Mario Party Advance exists and MPDS first released in November 2007 while MP8 first released earlier in May that same year, meaning that MP9 is really the *11*th game in the series. Canonically, both Albert Boris and Bertil Auris were (re)born as *twins* on the 11th September 2003, exactly two years after a devastating real-world event involving a pair of identical buildings that would get my comment shadow-banned if I name-dropped it. Albert and co. all are and have described themselves as celestial beings, which thematically fits perfectly with Mario Party 9’s story of Bowser Sr. and Jr. zapping the night sky and wider universe of stars and light (and ultimately life), which also mirrors Super Mario Galaxy’s main plot hence why they love that game so much (plus the references to it in future games like Mario Kart 7’s Rosalina Ice World). Furthermore, both Mario Galaxy and Mario Party 9 have story themes of existential death and renewal, states in which Albert and Bertil experienced between 2001 and 2003. One reason why Bertil fears being trapped in the MP9 disc could be because he sees it as some sort of *limbo* space, a term synonymous with purgatory which is a place described in many holy texts set between death and the afterlife (or, better yet to further drive home my point, reincarnation for some religions). Ultimately, Mario Party 9 is secretly about the death and return of Albert Boris.
8 was what got me into Mario party. Then I played 9 it was good and didn’t think too much of the car mechanic. After that I played 10, and unironically, I enjoyed 10 more. 😅 Hot take Ik but ye
I think the best part in this game is that the mini-stars make the minigames matter more, since your victory will boil down to what you get in the minigames.
I mostly like the MInigame Mode in Mario Party 9 because it has such fun games such as Garden Battle, Choice Challenge and High Rollers. But Party and Solo Mode are even more luck-based than the Party Mode in all the older Mario Parties is.
