In this video we take a look at the Dallas Cowboys 1st round pick - Mazi Smith. Mazi hasn't gotten a lot of unwarranted hate due to him nor showing up much on the stat sheet, but this video was made to show that he's doing fairly well for just a rookie. I think in 2-3 years he's going to be a solid 1-tech run stopper for us.

How are y'all feelin about Mazi Smith so far?
@oneofspades

Mazi is like having a high end guitar amp. It can do great things if you know how to control the settings. Mazi is that. His problem is he is raw but if he can figure out this game he can be special. But his advantage is he has the build and strength. No amount of training or steroids is giving you that strength. Skill level is the one knob he can definitely turn up.

This is good news! I'd like to see the Cowboys draft an OL in Rd. #1 in the 2024 Draft. That would be 3 years of putting first rounders on the O-line.

The problem isn't Mazi's power, he's got plenty of that to spare. My issue with Mazi that is very concerning is, he's unbelievably slow off the ball. He takes 1/2 second after everybody to get out of his stance and it was the same in college. I just don't know if he's going to change that, or all of a sudden become quicker. Lastly, his pad level is high at times but that can be fixed. Once he learns to get his pads lower, it's going to make his push even more dominant. I don't think he was a bad fit, but I don't know if he will ever be elite at the 1 tech.
@BrentTakes
@BrentTakes 10 месяцев назад
It's hard to know why he comes off the ball slow, but when I see him move it doesn't look like his athletism is the reason for it. I saw him look pretty athletic in the backfield tackling Saquon, so maybe it's just more of a timing thing? He should be able to learn from Osa, because that guy is a freak lol
@tonydorsett33

@BrentsCowboys That's the odd thing, he's very athletic for a man his size. So O have no idea but you can see, he gets off the ball very slow.

Great comment i have said the same thing in many posts in other PODCAST. Is called reaction time and for DT 's is more important than speed. DT 's .move in short spaces , that is why reaction time when evaluating them is so important. Except for Graham of Eagles and the kid From Lions no Michigan Linemsn HAS being a good player in NFL past 20 years. O linemen yes , no DT s those two are Rush ends. Taco Charton taken over J.J.WATTS imagine that D. With Michah, JJ. Tank , rest of our D line. Mazzi another body and not a quality pick. Great pics produce from day one. 3 years no way.

The only opinion on Mazi Smith that matters is Defensive Line Coach Aden Durde and DC Coordinator Dan Quinn. Their opinion: Mazi Smith is only getting 20% of the snaps. Everyone else’s opinion and the “so-called scouts” is bs 💩 When it comes to nose tackles the only statistic you need to know are snaps per game, and Mazis snaps are pitiful because the coaches dont trust him.

yeah i’m confused by that as well. why is our first round draft pick not on the field but i would like to say that it doesn’t make sense to simply just sit out a first round draft pick because you “don’t trust him”. taco charlton was seeing triple the amount of snaps and he was awful

He’s not better, it’s obvious. He’s having a hard time getting on the field. If he was good right now he would be out there more. Just watch him, he’s very slow off the snap, he’s so slow that he’s the last one to move when the ball is snapped. You can’t tell me that’s by design.

The Giants only got off 57 snaps against the defense, the Eagles had 62 and the Rams had 62. You think any of those teams ran the ball 40 times in those games? He was drafted to help stop the run and develop into a pass rusher, not the other way around. Plus with Quinn as the coordinator no one is going to see 75 to 80+ percent of the snaps that's not a DB.

I did hit the Like & Subscribe buttons. Great analysis of Mazi’s play. Personally, I’m not worried at all. I remember us taking a DT in the ‘80s, Tommy Noonan, and I remember thinking when I saw him play, that he was terrible. Mazi, on the other hand, is extremely athletic, quick, with explosive speed & quickness. Noonan had none of that. In three years, Mazi will be terrorizing OLs and hopefully, winning Championships. #DC4L

You WISH, he is very slow to react to snap of the ball that is why he has trouble with guard and center getting to him and moving him of the play. Poor reaction time is why he probably wont be a good DT in the league. Reaction time in short Space DT.'s play is more important than speed. Watch Aaron Donald, CHRIS JONES, AND OTHER DT'S IN BALTIMORE, AND TITANS.

I think where the disconnect between the fans and the expectations with mazi is what we thought he was gonna do and what the cowboys staff has asked him to do. A fact came out a couple weeks ago said that mazi has lost 40 lbs during this season. Losing this weight kinda puts him more of a 3 technique and the plan I think was to play him and Hankins together but once Hankins got hurt, mazi has had to play 1 and now he’s a little too light. Not including his issue with getting off the ball. Def time to improve tho and can’t wait to see what he does the rest of this and future seasons going forward
