I'm currently 40, but was diagnosed with BPH 6 or 7 years ago and have been taking medications for it since then. I do, however, have an auto immune disease and until this video (even though I suspected it) I didn't know about the connection. Always love learning new things.
Hey Dr, I had all the symptoms you listed for years. I went cold turkey, gave up all sugar and cholesterol rich foods for 6 months. Every issue I had for years was gone. The next year As I slipped back into bad eating habits all those issues started coming back....I really think sugar is the killer. I'm going back to better eating.
@@reyesmunguia4899 I hope so. I was amazed. Even my eyesight cleared up. To read a book I had to hold it about 2 feet away from my face. The optometrist said that was normal as we aged but even that cleared up around the 5th month...it's hard to cut out all sugar because if you read the labels it's in so many foods. Oh and I didn't use sugar substitutes.
Don’t forget seed oils (cooking oils whatever)is definitely a killer, most food? in grocery stores is garbage (bakery products, pizza ,cereals and pasta all contain sugar seed oils, chemicals and more sugar ) -No One Is Coming To Save You-
Same. Enlarged prostate. Gave me the meds, which i didnt take. Stopped sugar and processed foods( almost completely) labs were back to normal 3-4 months
I was listening to a interview with Dr Robert lustig. His research is on metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. 45% of Americans have fatty liver and 85% of Americans are affected by metabolic syndrome. As a result most men have a massive overabundance of insulin. And insulin is responsible for massive cell proliferation. I think this is why men get BPH as they age and their testosterone drops.
@@IsItVeg According to what you said , should every young man have BPH. But facts say, that aging is the main cause . With aging men have less Testosteron. I believe it is the main caise. the second important cause is Insulin resistance and the decreased production of Nitric oxid.
Thank you, Dr. Malik. Lots of great info in this episode. I'm currently taking pumpkin seed oil for my condition, which seems to help. Also tomatoes from my garden are abundant now, so I eat them daily. A recent video on another channel claims that eating cooked tomatoes, rather than raw tomatoes, provides more benefit of lycopene, but I'm not sure about this claim. It would be interesting to study, as well, if cooking tomatoes before eating them creates less irritability in the prostate. Also, one last note: I have observed that my BPH symptoms are often decreased after ejaculation. There seems to be some sort of relaxation of the prostate tissue going on, which, in turn, increases urine flow for awhile. Thanks, again. All the best 💙
Thanks Doc!!!! I'm starting to display some of these issues, frequent trip during the day and night, lighter than yellow urine, weaker stream, drinking before bedtime, not emptying my bladder, and sometimes the life or death urge to go and barely just making it to the restroom (about once a month with this issue). I ve reduced my water intake and just now getting color back in my urine. Going to reduce my water intake some more, it kinda hard because I always feel thirsty. I will try harder. I'm saving this topic and will continue to follow your advice. Thanks Doc you're the greatest!!!! Wish you were here in Atlanta!!!! Have a wonderful weekend!!!!❤❤
@MrFredlthomasiii The lighter the color of urine the better. Why do you want darker colored urine? If you are properly hydrated your urine is closer to clear.
I took Flomax for years and finally gave up and did the TURP. This was when I was 60. The TURP took a long time for me to recover but now I am better urologically, than since I was in my 20’s. The one negative of Flomax, which my urologist did not tell me, or maybe did not know, is it gives you floppy iris syndrome. So if/when I get cataract surgery, it’s going to be something I need to alert my Opthamologist to.
@@MrCurleymoe Well that totally sucks. Sorry to hear this did not work for you. How long since you had it that you still have this? I was on shaky ground the first 4-6 months then I slowly noticed it was improving and after 1 year I was fantastic.
I'm 63 and don't have any prostate related symptoms other than the following. I can stop drinking all liquids at 6 pm. Take a good long pee just before going to bed around ten. Every stinking night I wake up like clockwork around 3 am for a good long pee. Then I have hell falling back to sleep in under an hour! I don't even understand how I can create that much pee by stopping all liquids at 6pm and peeing just before I go to bed. Makes no sense!!
Get a good magnesium glycinate supplement. I take this twice daily, the second time just before bed. You will sleep deeply and soundly. Magnesium also prevents muscle cramps, those dreaded charlie horses that wake you up in the middle of the night.
I had bph. Prostate had enlarged to a size that squeezed off my pee tube and caused an extreme amount of urine retention. Doctor put me immediately on a self catheter therapy to prevent backflow to the kidneys, and 10 months later I had HoLep to restore normal function. It was nothing short of a blessing. HoLep is by far the best surgical option, but may be hard to find a urologist who is trained for the procedure.
I used to have this problem. But 2.5 years ago I switched to eating the carnivore diet way. Meat, eggs, butter, salt, and water. Nothing else. Now I sleep well all night. I'm 76 and have reversed 21 health conditions including excessive peeing at night, T2 diabetes, high blood pressure, gum disease, brain fog, and on and on. Hair is even regrowing on my formerly-bald spot. This is the best health and energy of my life. This way of eating eliminates inflammation. I'll never go back to eating those nasty plants!
i have tried carnivore and paleo diets with terrible results, weight loss...but only water weight, felt irritable all the time, couldnt sleep properly. Also, my exercise performance radically decreased, and libido went down. Carnivore seems to work well for a small proportion or people, but most people suffer like I did. Eat your vegetables, eat fruit, get enough fibre and avoid processed foods, do some exercise, watch your portion sizes, dont have treats and snacks in the house
@@bobbrian6526 Yes, I guess we are all different. I felt the same way at first. The sugar and carb withdrawal lasted six weeks for me and was wicked. The reason I went carnivore in the first place is that I had wicked hives from oxalate dumping. Even though it was a very rough time, I had to get to see other side of it. Now a couple years intocarnivore, I can't picture myself going back. But we are all different and our mileage will vary. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Respect to those who discipline themselves to stay on a diet like carnivore that < decreases carbs which < decreases triglycerides in the bloodstream, which < decreases arterial plaque. Plaque leads to clots, heart attack, and stroke. Carnivore diet can cause you to lose weight also which is the first thing this doctor recommended. 👍
Jan. 23 I drove to hospital having a heart attack. I told them it was not typical cause I was trying to figure out. Heart monitor showed death heart beats. Then I asked a nurse for catheter. 4,000 mls of urine fell out in 8 hours. Heart returned to normal. Now taking prescription meds plus pumpkin seeds and I am fine.
I have heard of studies that did show that saw palmetto was helpful for BPH, as well as some that didn't show a benefit. I have been taking saw palmetto for about 10 years & believe it helps, but not sure if it's just a coincidence or not. I have found that taking Tamsulosin helps a lot but it increases my heart rate by approx. 26 BPM, and I hate that so I try to avoid taking it. I drink 10 cups of coffee a day & am certain that the caffeine irritates the prostate, but I love coffee. Thanks for another helpful video Rena!
Try getting off coffee for a week and see if you notice a difference. I have read that caffeine , black pepper and hot peppers can irritate your bladder and cause you to urinate more often
I’m 59 and have been suffering with BPH for a couple of years now. I’ve tried a couple of prescription medications from my urologist but it really didn’t help. I’m going for Green Light Laser surgery next month. I can’t wait!
Is it common for patients to travel out of state to see doctors? I love this doctor. She has so much good information. I’ve learned so much over the past six months.
Sorry if I missed anything, but I watched the video 2X speed. I don’t think you mentioned about Zinc. I read that a healthy Prostate has a lot of Zinc. A swollen Prostate has low Zinc. So maybe deficiency Zinc is the problem. Also you said we shouldn’t eat too much meat and eat more vegetables. I think that’s wrong. Junk foods and plants are probably the problem. Eating more meat and organs balances Zinc and Copper. And a lot more nutrients and vitamins. Then we become healthier.
I have had surgery to my prostate, (I am 84, by the way) and I urinate hourly during the day, but I don’t have a problem during the night. Sometimes the urgency to pee is quite profound, but not always.
I've been on Tamsulosin for some years and it seems to help, but not always. Are some of the over the counter items you mentioned helpful while taking my prescription?
I've been using tamsulosin for quite a while and I found out it messes up your eyesight big time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I also had a procedure done called urolift. didn't work!
One thing that 100% relieves my BPH is my twice a year water fasting. By the 4th or 5th day, both urination and ejaculation is like I am a teenager again. Unfortunately after a few weeks the BPH tends to reappear again. Still haven't figured out how to get rid of it completely. But if anyone has the discipline, I'd encourage doing a water fast.
It would be great if you can make a video regarding antidiuretic hormone, the adrenals, and Kidney Health when it comes to people who pee all the time but not because of prostate enlargement but rather because the kidneys are just dumping water to the bladder continuously. I have to drink 2 to 3 gallons a day to stay hydrated and it doesn't matter how I adjust my electrolytes, it's the same. I'm currently spending a few months sleeping extra and hoping that it's just an adrenal fatigue issue that will recover after I get caught up on sleep when I didn't sleep properly for 5 years due to a life crisis. I pee out over a quart when I pee so I'm literally at capacity. It's definitely not related to the prostate with the small frequent urinations and slow urinations. Definitely has to do with how kidneys are managing filtering and water recycling. And I have a pretty good non-processed food diet can I spent years studying the all the emerging research on the diet approaches and I think I've got my diet dialed in. I know people that also have developed this that never smoked but then started vaping nicotine midlife and then ran into a major water management issue a year or two and a vaping nicotine frequently. Thanks for consideration on this Different Twist of frequent urinations causes
I'm 63, very fit and healthy. I do all the things you mention in this video and have had BPH since I was in my 30s. My urologist gave me 2 choices, UroLift, which is temporary, or TURP which is not something I want to do. I use Alfuzosin which helps a little but no real solution. I've tried all other meds and they didn't work.
I’m 63, Carnivore, and I eat high fat red meat and my BPH went away. Doctors - stop pushing that Red Meat is bad. Red meat is not bad for you. It’s all the refined carbs that are bad for you.
I started having bph at age 22. I have not had the best life. Now at 50 i still have the same symptoms but at a lesser frequency. I have also found out that having stomach issues, and constipation are culprits for peeing a lot. Fix your gut and the symptoms will be lesser.
Very informative segment. Thank you. If there's an opportunity in a future segment, I would be grateful to hear what if anything can be done to arrest or maximally slow BPH from progressing further over the balance of a lifetime once it has been diagnosed.
Great content. I did expect that that you would dispel or confirm any relationship (may be curvilinear) with ejaculation frequency and BPH symptoms. I thought of it when you explained that the deprivation of oxygen in portions of the prostate increases inflammation. Perhaps there is an optimum periodicity to “exercising” the prostate to reduce the average level of inflammation? Same question goes with prostate massage, potentially good for circulation in small doses?
I had these symptoms and the urologist checked and said my prostate was small. Turned out to be prostatitis. After 12 days of antibiotics the trouble mostly went away.
I had to pee so bad in Home Depot , I knew I would not make it to the bathroom, so I pee in the display toilet and it runs out the bottom in to the isle . And a lady starts screaming . BPH is no joke .
It's no joke! Do the carnivore diet. It will fix you right up. Get the processed junk food out. That's what's causing all the inflammation. Not meat. All those studies include people that are also eating junk food. I'm battling high stress. It's taken me two years but I'm down from waking up 4 times a night to 1. And I think I'll be able to sleep through the night as soon as I get my stress down.
I can't remember the name of the movie where those guys did all of those horrible and gnarly stunts and jokes. But I love the one where the guy takes a newspaper and goes into a plumbing supply house and goes up to a toilet that is on display opens up the lid, sits down, opens up the newspaper and takes a shit! It was so dang funny!
I would like to hear more about the PAE procedure. I have been reading that this procedure is the least invasive and damaging and has the least side effects of any other procedure.
Thank you again Dr. Malik. Just had a prostate biopsy, and it was noticed that the prostate is enlarged. I have had a number of the symptoms that you mention.
Thanks. I’m 62. 6’ 32” waist. Highly acting with 3 huskies. I eat almost no vegetable or fruit, very very little red meat ( hamburger only), very very little fruit. Mostly it’s Frosted Flakes, chocolate milk and coffee. No meds. Healing wounds well. Can drink a pint of water and sleep all night ( 8+ hours). Mine is not fit everyone. But I do keep up on intelligent information to consider. II think I’ll try a couple Guava a week and see how I feel. All be well.
I started drinking ridiculous amounts of water to combat kidney stones, so I pee like it’s my job. So I don’t mind getting up to pee. But the BPH has given me a lot of inconvenience and some discomfort with hard starting, slow flow, intermittent stream… it’s a pisser. Like one comedian said: the only time I don’t have to pee is when I’m peeing 😄
I'm 66 and I like to eat a lot of spaghetti with red sauce ( tomato sauce ) and Italian parsley . Is that a food that is helpful to reduce/mitigate enlarged prostate issues ?
Ive never understood my pee problem. I could pee a good amount now and 20 mins later Id be back to pee another copious amount. Where is all this water coming from? Im not diabetic. I dont drink a lot of coffee either.
The BPH issue is effecting me. It’s taking a toll on my ejection force and slow pee stream. And I have not had success with a urologist even though I have great private health insurance. My theory is there is some sort of blockage in seminal vesicles which is part of the prostate.
A good urologist would probably recommend a cystoscopy for you. A camera is inserted through your urinary canal through the penis and into the prostate to check for blockages. The procedure sounds worse than it is. Aside from perhaps an uneasy sensation as the camera is inserted, it is painless. You can watch the procedure in real time.
@@katazack I had the cystoscopy done. They showed the urethra passing through the prostate is constricted. I still believe I need a MRI for any other issues that might be on the outside of the prostate.
The prostate is an organ which has an affinity for calcium. So: Hardening of the arteries, kidneys, brain, and finally the Prostate happens over time. Vitamin K2 fixes all of that. At 75, I have the blood pressure of a teenager, and a 6 foot stream.
How about Tadalafil (Cialis) at 25:20 min? It's approved by the FDA for BPH, but does it reduce the chance of getting prostate cancer, or are its benefits just for BPH symptoms?
Reduce the number of times you need to get up in the night: About mid-afternoon (or more often), lay down on your back and elevate your legs above your head level between half to one our daily. You shall notice that you'd need to get up less times during the night.
Hello Doctor, i appreciate your video on BPH. IM 51 years old, with mild enlargement of the prostate. IM currently on Ominic and Xatral once daily. Can my enlargement regress and get normal? Please advise. Thank you.
There is limited research directly linking cycling with prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH). However, some studies have examined the potential effects of cycling on prostate health in general. Key findings include: Cycling and Prostate Health: Long-term cycling is known to exert pressure on the perineal area (the region between the anus and genitals), potentially affecting the prostate gland. Some studies suggest that this pressure could lead to temporary inflammation or irritation of the prostate, which may mimic symptoms similar to BPH (like urinary issues), but it does not necessarily cause prostate enlargement. Cycling and Prostate Cancer: There has been some debate over whether cycling increases the risk of prostate cancer. A 2014 study suggested a potential association between high-intensity cycling and a slightly increased risk of prostate cancer, but the evidence was inconclusive. Importantly, this is unrelated to prostate enlargement (BPH), which is a benign condition. Impact on PSA Levels: Cycling, particularly long-distance riding, can temporarily elevate prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, which might lead to misleading results in prostate health screenings. This elevation is typically short-term and does not indicate prostate enlargement or disease. In general, while cycling may affect the prostate temporarily (through irritation or elevated PSA), there is no strong evidence to suggest it leads to or exacerbates benign prostatic hyperplasia. If you experience discomfort or symptoms related to prostate health while cycling, adjusting your seat, taking breaks, or using padded shorts may help alleviate pressure on the area. Regards, ChatGPT 😊
What about “water ablation” for the prostrate?? Heard something on our local news was interviewing someone, I believe from the Cleveland Clinic, about it and it sounded very interesting.
Regarding procedures after deciding medication isn't effective, my urologist suggests water vapor therapy and, in particular, the Rezum procedure as one of the lesser-invasive next steps, one that can be done in the office. So I'd be interested in your take on that. My symptoms are not too bad and the data he presents on potential side effects would probably make me decline the procedure.
Six years ago (I'm 71 now) during a physical I had a PSA of 12. My Urologist was concerned and I had a MRI and a biopsy ( fun times) . Thankfully it came back negative for prostate cancer but it did show an enlarged prostate. The next year he had me do a first in AM urine test for prostate cancer and that came back negative as well. The only symptoms I had were a weaker stream and having to get up at night to pee. Even though I didn't have erection issues he convinced me to start taking a daily 5mg. Tadalafil tablet. It took a few weeks but it worked great and I was able to sleep through the night. Also since it was prescribed for BPH my Medicare drug plan covers it.
I had it done in Sydney Au in October 2021. My prostate was very large 250cc. Had a catheter in due to retention. Long story short was a great success after a wee hiccup. Shrunk it by 70% yes no kidding have MRI scan to prove it.
I can sure relate to cryptofan. Age here 70, prostate cancer, radiation last year, and Eligard hormone shots. Waking up to pee, awake for over an hour. Good ole Flomax.
Is the sugar from raw fruit, or a raw vegan diet problematic? Or, helpful? I exercise daily. 65 years old. Still getting up four or five times a night. Do not want to take meds. If diet and exercising aren't working, what next?
