Mexico is a country which for most of its modern History has always been overshadowed by its Norther Neighbour the United States. The two countries share a long border which has caused many issues.
However Mexico may be finally breaking free from its neighbour and carving its own path

your totally wrong people is becoming poorer in mexico, everyday is harder, the goverment put us on heavy debt to buy votes. And the economy didnt growth 18% in 2023, in the pandemic the mexican economy retracted, in fact that is a recover from that crash. Also most foreign factories, arent going to mexico, In the pandemic mexico had the highest mortality of the world Wages increase wasnt natural but forced by decree and also pushed far more people into poverty since a lot of mexican small and medium companies couldnt afford it and fired people, all prices increased because of it, making the increases on wage meaningles. Also the goverment changed how poverty is meazured, so lower the amoun of poor people on the statistics. the drug cartels de facto had control over large portions of land, the goverment just abandoned the people to their luck. the goverment reduced the money in health, education, etc, they never pushed quality of life, the health system is crashed since atleast a decade and they get less money everyear.

Whilst violence and cartels in our country are topics heavily spread internationally (be it that those kind of stories sell more) people often overlook the fact that it's not like that ALL over the country. Yes we do have some tense situations from time to time, but it's not like we all live in fear. I just wanted to point that out since it is upsetting to think that this is the image many foreigns have of us. I wish more people would think this way. I know a lot of people in the US respect Mexico, but many do not. That said it is very important that all of North America does well. If Canada, the US, and Mexico are able to cooperate together more fully, there's not much stopping us on a global level. It's an insanely rich region full of smart hard-working people, filled to the brim with natural resources, and with tons of land in every climate zone imaginable. I know a lot of people talk about Russia and China nowadays in the US, but if North America could come closer together I don't really think they'd be much of an issue.

When I was growing up in a small town in Mexico in the 90’s. I remember I didn’t even have a toilet until I was 5. I didn’t have a shower at home until I was 10. Most days I would eat beans. My mom would only cook meat once a week. We could only watch one channel on TV. My dog would only eat leftover human food. My family would use wood to cook most of the time. But oh boy, nowadays pretty much everyone has access to all that. It’s amazing how 30 years can make a big difference in a town.

So Luis. During World War II, America summon the leaders of world to Bretton Woods, New York. And pitch a deal to them. If your nation sided with America against the Soviet Union, American warships would protect your nation allowing you trade with any nation one earth and industrializing. This was bribe to fight the cold war. Mexico that fought several wars against the US decided not the join the alliance. So Mexico did not industrialize it stayed very rural and very poor. But after the Soviet Union fell in 1989 President Bill Clinton came to power seeing any opportunity to invest in Mexico began NAFTA to industrialize Mexico. But now that China is imploding because of Mao's one child policy America is shifting away from China and bring supply chains and logistic under it security umbrella North and Central America.
@HellBot-gi5si
@HellBot-gi5si 4 месяца назад
Now there 6 oil and gas pipelines coming out of America into Mexico and another 3 more are being built. But northern Mexico is tapped out Texas has taken most of the workers. So now America will bring industrialization to Central Mexico where most of workers are. But first we must fix your train system most them don't interconnect and you don't have a world class port for shipping. So America is going spend a trillion dollar on Central Mexico infrastructure to make sure you have a stable electrical grid as well.

Same. We use to heat up water in the sun for hours to take a warm bath, wood fire stove, us grandkids would take turns each day going to the only mill in the town to grind up corn for tortillas the bathroom was an outhouse and there was only a couple lightbulb around the house here and there. Food was always there for us since we had quite the assortment of livestock but you still had to butcher them which I had a problem because I kinda saw them as pets lol and it would suck to come home and see your favorite goat being skinned lol.

Many Chinese factories are now offshoring to Mexico to evade heavy US tariffs. Mexico is having a golden opportunity to develop an industrialized knowledge-bases economy driven partially by foreign investment. The US-Mexico border affair however, has always been a moot topic when thousands of illegal undocumented migrants flock to America via Mexico each year, most of which are not Mexican.

@@adelinod.5568 I wouldn’t worry about it. The Mexicans hired by Chinese to build stuff for them will naturally learn, absorb knowledge, and eventually be able to do it on their own. This has happened every time production is outsourced. Example: The biggest bicycle manufacturer on Earth is Giant Bicycles, they started as a contract manufacturer for Schwinn, then realized they could do it themselves and have Schwinn a middle finger. You can’t have people build the stuff and not have them eventually learn how to design and engineer it, market it, sell it etc. China is just ensuring the total demise of their US exports by contracting to Mexico, though that’ll happen regardless so may as well make as much money now as possible I suppose.

I just got back from Mexico. Before my recent trip, last time I was in Mexico was in 1994. I’m really, really impressed how Mexico has changed. I saw the quality of life people in Mexico City, Jalisco, and Cancún now have. My uncle in Mexico City lived in a poor old shack back in 94. Now that area he transformed it into a two story house with 2 bathrooms and even a balcony. It’s still very modest but compared to what it was in 1994, it’s an improvement. My wife is from the Philippines, and when I visited the Philippines in 5 years ago, I thought Mexico and Philippines are pretty much the same. Boy was I was wrong.. huge difference in the quality of life both people have. Many people in Jalisco, Mexico City and Cancún have stable jobs, thus contribute to the economy. If Mexico can keep the cartel problem as bay, and motivate its people to seek higher education, I see a bright future for Mexico.

Just because a country reaches economic status doesn't mean everyone will be fairly paid for the effort of their work. I think AMLO has done great in those aspects.

Mexico is emerging as a richer country due to a combination of economic reforms, strategic trade agreements, and a burgeoning manufacturing sector. Recent structural reforms in energy, telecommunications, and labor markets have improved efficiency and attracted foreign investments. The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) has bolstered trade and economic integration with North America, enhancing Mexico's export capabilities. Additionally, Mexico's robust automotive and electronics manufacturing industries have positioned it as a critical player in global supply chains. Coupled with a growing middle class and technological advancements, these factors are driving Mexico's economic growth and elevating its status on the global economic stage. Isn’t the USMCA NAFTA 2.0? Mexico has been integrated in North America trade for the past 30 years. Foreign investment isn’t due to Mexicos improved efficiency but has more to do with US companies wanting to get away from their reliance on China’s market (for a number of reasons). Remember if Mexico cannot develop their own industries they will remain an exporter rather than an importer. Mexico is still playing catchup with the rest of the global powers. Foreign investment does not signify growth but furthers dependency, specifically when domestic industries don’t rely on their own materials to manufacture goods. If i were Mexico I wouldn’t allow foreign direct investment unless companies would give away their patents to improve my own domestic industry, something like China did when they experienced their economic growth (80’s-00s) through Joint ventures and technology transfer. It would be more wise for Mexico to require foreign firms to enter into joint ventures with its local industries.

Was just in the city of Monterrey, Mexico's industrial powerhouse and highest GDP per capita. I was blown away by the progress. Incredibly developed. The malls and shopping put most US and Canadian cities to shame. Although Monterrey is a bit of an outlier it is a beacon of hope. However it also has serious issues with crumbling electrical grid, water shortages and heat waves. Worse still, is Mexican inflation, essentially keeping Mexican people poor relative to their nothern neighbor. As a Canadian, I was blown away to find I was spending the same, sometimes more, per week for groceries as I was in Canada. It's insane. Price stability needs to be a major effort of MORENA next term.

The north of Mexico is mostly desert and the factories of the Coca, water companies and beers (like Corona) are there sucking water from the residents so there's always a shortage, and it's worse if you're not living in a rich neighborhood (they have their own water). We expect the government to regulate that but it's also bringing money so they won't do that unless it starts to affect them ;( Monterrey is also known as a very expensive city because there lives the wealthy and it's full of big companies and stuff, so it's just the place. Morena wants everyone to be poor, they have created a division among classes that we will hardly be able to fix anytime soon. But they keep saying that everything is fine and everyone is happy. Morena won again because they committed electoral fraud, most Mexicans aren’t happy about the presidential election results. Morena now has a majority in the senate and the chamber of deputies so they can approve all the reforms and laws they want and even change the constitution to favour them. Also the power outrages are a consequence of a poor management over the electrical grid and the way electrical energy is generated over here (the government takes care of that and provides electricity with their agency CFE) and the president decided to give electricity to Belice. The water shortages happen everywhere in Mexico because of companies like Coca Cola who have privileges over water. But the fact that Morena likes to destroy the environment like they did for the Mayan train means that we will run out of water sooner.

The agreement was that if you sided with America against the Soviet Union, America would protect your shipping allowing you to trade with any nation on earth and industrialize. Mexico did not take that deal decided not to join the alliance. South Korea was one the poorest nations did take the deal and became one of the richest. It only after the Soviet Union fell in the 1989 that is when Mexico started to work with the United States and industrialize. What makes it difficult for Mexico to invest in human capital through education is that much of the country outside of city centers is rural. For example, in my state of San Luis Potosi, the only city is the capital city, San Luis Potosi. Every other town is rural and mostly agrarian. Many towns don't even have elementary schools, so students from there must travel to the nearby larger municipality for elementary school. It's the same for high school, and it gets worse for university, because there are only four universities in the state of San Luis Potosi, and they are all concentrated in the capital city. My cousin lives relatively close to the capital city, and her trip to university was a 2.5 hour trip one-way on the exposed bed of a truck every single day until she graduated. Unfortunately, even though Mexico has a compulsory education system, it's rarely enforceable due to the lack of educational institutions for its sparse population.

We still have a lot to do. First of all, security. If we want to develop our industrial sector, we first need to make it safe for outside investors. Diversifying economy. It might not be a problem for the whole country but atleast in my city, you're either working on the goverment or a teacher OR in some all business. This is bad. This means that our qualified workes will flee else where to find a job. Poverty. It is a big issue that is being ressolved, like the minimum wage increase, but for some reason the goverment has started to give out loans to our eldest and youngest, it's not bad short term, but long term, they'll become dependant on us. Once there's too many loans handed out, we'll have to print more, since there's more money, it's worth less. So we will have to pay MORE. Kind of a Venezuela/Argentina situation

The cartels, essentially, work for the C.I.A. so the War on Drugs won't end anymore soon. A drug culture gives the government all the reason the militarize police forces, potentially expand actual military force and keep for-profit private prisons filled to the brim with people that probably need psychological help more than they need to be thrown in a prison cell. Three, possibly four, Mexican Presidents have been revealed as being on the payroll of the C.I.A. getting cash to look the other way or put half hearted effort towards the cartels. There might be so change coming to this relationship as the U.S. is said to be taking a slight downgrade on the world stage if what the psychopaths at the WEF and other multinational organizations say turns out true.

I like how Americans talk about Mexican cartels without having any idea about how Mexican cartels work. The cartels are not those terrorist types who want to end the Mexican State and impose a new political and economic order and then destroy "America", they do not want to and cannot, if that were the case, Mexico would be at the level of Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria or Yemen for a long time... Think of the cartels as if they were the Italian mafia, they do favors, they have "protection" businesses, they bribe/terrify the local authorities and above all they sell and distribute drugs, of course they walk around in the sunlight with their guns and SUVs, Only they do not do it in the important centers and cities, but in several towns and rural communities in the country. Now imagine that the federal government's attempts to bring security to all those remote towns and settlements are thwarted by the same local population who protect these criminals (because many of these criminals are their relatives), do you think they would accept with open arms the entry of a foreign force? However, the United States can help put an end to the cartels, but it is not by sending troops to Mexico, if not taking care of their own addicts at home.

There's poverty, but there's no such thing as extreme poverty in Mexico as there would be in an official third world country. Anyone with a normal regular job has enough or more than enough to eat and survive. To he honest, millions have it better in Mexico because most people own their houses, and when you live with family, there's normally no rent to be paid and the bills are quite affordable. In the US most people are in a rush to pay their high rent and high bills under too much stress

Many cities are now catching up with the US in terms of prices on just daily things. Hotels used to be under $20 a day and meals used to be $5-8 and now hotels are $60 a day and meals are some $20 and up. It's starting to be like anywhere in mid-US. Mexico relying on Chinese investment as an economy boost is dangerous. When the United States seeks to prevent Chinese goods flowing in with "Made in Mexico" tags, Mexico will regress on its development. Mexico needs to woo these companies directly. Presently, Mexico is an after-effect of near-shoring, US protectionism, and countries seeking to avoid US tariffs, via the USMCA free-trade agreement.

We all know that a country whom sells it resources to foreignerz will have social problems due to a lack of investment on the poor. It does business with countries like North Koria, Russia, etc. That is, it has a diverse portfolio. In fact, it wants to join BRICS but we know that if we do, our daddy 🇺🇸👹 will severly punish us. The goods are literally made in Mexico by Mexican workers. That alone satisfies the definition of Country of Origin. It is not dangerous to Mexico at all if the owner of the factory is Chinese. Firstly, Mexico and the PRC are honest partners and competitors in global trade, unlike the USA whose companies run for cover under their favorite Senator whenever they start losing a game played on a level field.

Very nice piece on Mexico, thank you. I would also underscore the incredible levels of corruptions and red tape at all levels and very high interest rates banks charge on loans. For example, average APR on consumer credit cards is 80%-130%. The people that are NOT in the formal economy are over taxed to make up for those that are not paying their fair share. Extortion payments (protection money) by cartels and the like are far too common at all levels, even sidewalk taco stands must pay up, with little to no legal recourse for civilians as the authorities are also inept, corrupt and lazy. I do believe Mexico just needs to get out of its own way and apply basic tried and true policies and methods to really flourish and level up the life of its citizen, but we are not there yet (IMHO as a Mexican national) 🇲🇽
