This Moana 2 News Is CONCERNING 

Not to mention it’s coming out the same day as Wicked part 1. A rushed panic job going up against one of the most anticipated musical adaptations of all time 😬😬😬

Most of the animation industry in The last decade uses nostalgia.

A lot of people (specfically Disney) forget Moana is a movie to represent polynesian culture and shouldn't just be a cash grab. I'm Polynesian and when it first came out I saw it with my family and it was such a heart melting experience watching it for the first time. Seing people who look like me, listening to songs that had polynesian languages, and even just having real polynesian VA's is an experience only minorites can fully experience. Moana 2 will honestly in my opinion be such a slap in the face, with it being so rushed and most likely will lack any cultural context/polynesian culture.

Honestly I just want a good NEW movie. Moana 2 did not need a sequal. :')

Here’s my biggest worry. I’m not a Disney fan, but I AM a huge animation fan. There is a big difference between TV show animation and movie animation. Moana one did a fantastic job with their animation. The water physics were stunning and insanely well done, the lighting and textures were gorgeous, etc. that is made possible by the big blockbuster movie budget. A TV show is not given this funding, which is why show animation tends to be less impressive, especially with 3D animation. I don’t necessarily trust they are going to spend all that time and money reanimating what they had for the TV show in order to take it up to the level of the first movie.

I still remember the Atlantis "sequel" movie that was also a cancelled tv show. I really liked Atlantis 1. Praying for Moana 2 lmao.

If they really wanted to do another Moana movie just do a PREQUEL. That would be way more interesting and it could be about Moana’s ancestors or maybe even her father and grandmother.

Thank you for giving Lin Manuel Miranda some props. Poor guy was over-exposed, but doesn't deserve the level of hate he gets.

A part of me wonders if this is due to the limitations studios place upon themselves by grouping animation as a "family friendly" or "comedic" medium. They're trying to play it safe by removing as little risk as possible to appeal to as many as possible, but they've lost sense of what makes movies interesting amd intriguing. A lot of the intrigue in films is built on stakes and tension between characters and scenarios, but when they're not trying to scare kids with that risk, they remove a lot of that staying factor. Some of the most memorable moments in films, even family friendly films, were the intense moments that shocked us. It's not a necessity to have dark scenes in your movie, but Disney hasn't shown us much quality so far trying to play it safe.

7:25 This is also a problem of certain games turning into animes mainly persona 5. Persona 5 has about 100 hours of content and that is more than 2 times the anime series length but it is very difficult weaving all of the different choices and confidants to a series regardless.

Whoa thanks for the shout-out Calxiyn ! 😊🙌🎉🎊, I'm so nervous for Moana 2 I love the first movie and it being worked from a Disney+ show to a movie is very yikes and also a lot of people haven't brought this up but Disney not bringing back the directors of Moana John Musker and Ron Clements( also the directors of The Little Mermaid and Hercules) might be the biggest red flag in my opinion 😬😳

The worst case scenario for Barlow and Bear is that they're forced to write songs outside their style and their grand introduction to general audiences flops... really hoping they pull through.

I'm calling it now, it's just gonna be like Atlantis 2, Tarzan and Jane, Cinderella 2, etc. Just three episodes loosely stitched together.

Honestly, while I recall enjoying the first Moana, it wouldn’t surprise me if this movie is bad

1. Forget Moana 2, they're making a live-action adaptation of Moana! 2. I think the Lin-Manuel Miranda fatigue actually began with Wish, given how Julia Michaels tried to remake his style; they might as well have hired Eminem to write songs for Wish. Heck, I think Ariana Grande could have done better writing songs for Wish - Ariana Grande at least has a musical theater background.

Side note that I find a little odd about the Moana series not having Auli’i Cravalo return is that she’s still currently doing voice work for Disney! She currently is one of the leads on the animated Disney Channel show “Hailey’s On It.” And they even made a joke on the show about her character saying she relates to Moana!…

Hold it!, correct me if Im wrong but I heard you say animation was done and... that cant be. Animation for tv series is of a much much lower quality than that for film due to much much lower budget and tighter deadlines, which means everything from story planning to animation, to lighting, to rendering, is done at a much lower quality and at a quicker pace with less time to do corrections. So if the heads at Disney decided to suddenly translate this into a theatrical then all the animation would have to be, not necessarily reworked but polished even further improved the lighting, textures and re rendered. Also its quite likely that they would want to rework the layout of many of their shots and also, since this was made for a series, the story structure would be considered for a segmented pacing, where people would watch one episode, stop for a day or week and come back for the next one, whereas a film is all in one straight go, its a single viewing. There have been tv series translated to movies and watching the moment where one episode ends and another begins its like getting whiplash. So no animation cant be done and that means that, depending on when they decided to do this change, the animators are going to have to work their rears off, in order to have it ready in 8 months.

I don't trust disney with sequels anymore, and then turning a tv show into a "sequel movie"... yeah they already did this with atlantis 2, heck dreamwork doing a pilot movie for their megamind show right now and people don't like it.

I’m pretty sure it’s more likely they were in contract for a tv show but had to renegotiate whenever they decided to make it a movie. They could still be in talks to renegotiate. Also, Lin Manuel Miranda was only 1/3 of the songwriters/composers. The other 2 have been confirmed to come back ❤️

When you were talking about the recasting thing, it reminded me of this mega crossover fanfic (or fics, I'm still workshopping the whole idea) that I want to make. As I conceptualize it, I notice how I employ many tricks that movies or TV shows of a similar nature use. Things like how multiple characters don't get to have speaking lines or just appear in a quick cameo. Some only being in costume. Other characters not being there at all. Although in part I'm deliberately invoking these to give them the feel of said shows or movies, I realize that they're also necessary. You can't have a work, or at least a Crisis of Infinite Earths-style project similar to what I'm trying to make with 40+ characters or so and have them all be voiced. For costumed or transformed characters, you can't just afford to give them all a transformation sequence without messing up the story's pacing. Sometimes, getting the ogs, although it would be cool, are kinda unnecessary. Making this project really made me appreciate those tricks a lot more.

I'm having such strong Atlantis 2 flashbacks... basically three episodes of the cancelled TV stiched together. RIP Moana 2 if they are going to pull the same nonsense :/

The song "Out of Thin Air" from Aladdin and the King of Thieves is actually a really great song in my opinion, especially for something that came out of a direct-to-video sequel. The song does the IP justice more so than any other sequel song I can think of, to the point that an instrumental version of it actually plays at The Arabian Coast at Tokyo DisneySea. Maybe it's not Alan Menken level, but that's a ridiculously high bar.

I don't think a movie made up of episodes will be pased very well, the story telling styles are just too different.

I know this is late (3 months), but I wanted to say how calming(?) your content is. Oftentimes I have trouble finding a long, entertaining video to listen to whenever doing other activities, and these videos-song analysis or news analysis-are perfect! Ooh, I loved the (unofficial) Bridgerton musical and still listen to it every once in awhile. And now I am daydreaming about what a Barlow and Bear Wish could have been like. Also Wikipedia says that Auli'i and the Rock are confirmed to be returning, for what it's worth.

There's ONE other exception off the top of my head to not bringing composures back! For Tarzan 2, somehow they actually got Phil Collins back! And the score's composure, too (alongside one of the composures for Tarzan and Jane who'd been the orchestrator for the original movie).

I love this video, especially the part where you talked about other studios mimicking Disney music. That reminded me of a movie I just watched yesterday on Netflix called Journey To Bethlehem. The music in it sounds very epic, powerful and orchestral, and it literally has one of the best villain songs ever! Well, at least it is better than the villain song in Wish. It is so much more powerful and evil. I would actually love if you made a video about this movie. Can you please make a Reaction video to that villain song, Good To Be King? I bet you will love it. You should totally make a video about Journey To Bethlehem.

As strange as it is to see a new Moana movie coming out, I’m not gonna judge it until it comes out. Maybe it will good, maybe it’ll be bad. I’m just gonna wait and see.

As a huge fan of Tangled the series, I was super excited for the Moana show. To say I was disappointed when I found out it was turned into a seemingly rushed movie would be an understatement. I really hope it turns out well but based on the information we have so far, it is not looking good. At least the Tiana series looks like it's still on track to being released eventually so fingers crossed for that one.

It worry me too. Do hope Moana does for the work of the artists but I dont want this to happen again.

11:20 I may be of the minority but I too think it's acceptable to hire someone new if the previous VA just moved on, had a different gig, etc. I love VAs for shows I adore but if I find out my fave got killed off bc the VA woul not be replaced, I'd be big mad just a bit. Obviously you want the characters to sound like you like them spunding - plenty of people are excellent mimics. I really don't see the problem with hiring another actor sometimes.

Most recasts are generally fine, but it depends on the role.

Until recently I didn't realize that a Moana sequel was coming out either. I don't know who thought this was a good idea or why they actually thought this would work. Also there are a few deleted Moana songs that made it to the internet. It would be cool to see you break those down like you did the Rapunzel songs.

Yeah, why I'm worried is because it feels like they're getting fresh blood to continue the weird locking the composures out of the writer's room thing. Why? Who knows. Maybe because of the weird stuff with how it's been less creative driven. But it really feels like they're trying to bring in people who are potentially more naive to how the process is supposed to go. Idk maybe it's nothing but I'm really suspicious of it :/

All I knew that Moana 2 was supposed to be a reboot of the first one. Loved it the first time? good, because we're going to remake it again because the storyline died....didn;t know about the other things. The Rock was heavily critized for it

Finally! Someone else who sees the red flags I do! I've been seeing people get excited over this, meanwhile, as an animator, I was immediately suspicious. Even the teaser is sus because it's in shadow. Using dark lighting is an easy way to hide animation and VFX flaws, i.e. it's hiding the TV quality animation. But who knows. Maybe a miracle will happen and I'll be pleasantly surprised like when I saw Wonka. Speaking of which, any plans to review the songs in that film? I personally loved the film, but I have more of an animation/film eye. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts from your musical ear.

While Moana isn't a bad film, but it isn't a particular creative movie. I fear Moana 2 would be even more derivative than Wish, as uncreative that was.

I'm sorry, but I have to say it. As a HUGE Tangled fan. The TV show was HORROBLE!! It's just a collection of fanfics. Bad fanfics. And as for a Tangled sequel, I will BEG Disney to cancel it because they will ruin it! (like they will ruin Eugene) This had to be said.

I don't get the dislike of recasting. It's a natural thing to do not to destroy the plotline in case something happens with the original actor. There are cases where the actor does such a great job, you can't tell that there's been a recast, like with Iroh in Avatar or with Macaque in Monkie Kid. There are also those where the actor is so strikingly different that it gives you a fascinating new interpretation of the character, like the recasts in Harry Potter: Dumbledor, Voldemort/ Tom Riddle or Grindewald (I don't llike the Fantastic Beasts sequels, but Grindewald being played by three actors was really interesting to watch).
