Beautiful meadow Joel, I wish local councils would give space over to nature not just for building houses, everything needs to be in balance. I wish I had the finances to buy some land and make it a haven for wildlife. But of course I’m trying to optimise my small back garden for wildlife.

Then you are doing great. It is not just a matter of money. I am sure there are where you live 'green' spaces that are owned by the council, or schools, hospitals, companys, etc that could be turned into something way better. Plants can be donated by inhabitants who know how to multiply them. They can be planted by schoolclasses, maintained by elderly volanteers ( in exchange for coffee and cake 😅). Creativity is needed. Speak to ther right council members, as a group of neighbours and who knows what you will accomplish..

Its impressive, I'm happy with long grass we have had, it out competes anything trying grow. A few orchids and thistles have grown but the thing that warms my heart is the ducks, partridges and pheasants that have have used the long grass as their haven to rest and protect their young. I dont pass through it but they sometimes give me a fright when they shout at me walking past in the borders.

My goodness, that wildflower meadow is out of this world. It is so picturesque, and with so many delightful colors. Its like stepping into a beautiful dream, one you simply don't want to awaken from. How I would love to sit beside it and just watch and listen to the sights and sounds of nature. This is medicine to awaken the soul, to take you off to a sacred and healing space. Thank you Tracey, so much. Although I've created acres and acres of these over the last years, this one is very close to my heart, the owners very kindly let me manage it as I see fit, no one else touches it or interferes and it needs little maintenance. I'll keep on doing these as long as I'm physically able, and then it'll be in a supervisory capacity, but these habitats are just so vital, and word is spreading - they don't have to be acres, but a patchwork of many smaller areas can make the same difference ☺

Thanks Joel, I am trying in my tiny garden, I have noticed over the past couple of years that the plants help a lot but fresh water is life, especially in summer/dry spells/below freezing when all water is frozen over..Does not need to be fancy just some large plastic plant pot stands in a corner that wildlife will feel safe in and changed either daily for preference but if anyone struggles with that, at least every alternate day.. WE have birds galore from tiny dunnocks to ravens, foxes, hedgehogs, squirrels.. It takes a day or so for them to discover it but all will return on a regular basis.. Again, thanks and Bless you for all this knowledge.

Councils just don’t think when they mow the grass a few centimetres high on the SSI site which is protected ……. All the native flowers you can see coming up (vipers bugloss, field poppy, birds foot trefoil, wild carrot to name a few) all just mown down…. Right next to an overgrown stream-overflow pond …….. The potential to create such a great habitat by just mowing a path through it and leaving it be until end of September …… Waste of council money and time mowing it when they could be doing better things like clearing access paths for all residents or repairing pavements and potholes etc.

@@EdurtreG hopefully that would be the last option. There are so many beautiful trees 70+ years old and vast biodiversity, plants and wildlife. It would be heartbreaking seeing it go, leaving all the inhabitants homeless. Hey Joel! Maybe you need to swallow a spider to catch the fly?! Wonderful to see a meadow so full of life, so many insects whizzing past your camera, it really does speak for itself. It's great to just sit and listen to insects going about their day, so good for our mental health to step away from our media and spend time outdoors. I think it's especially important for our children and grandchildren to witness nature in its wild form. Folk of my age will remember playing in fields covered in wildflowers and insects, it would be so nice to think children can still witness these areas. Lovely positive video, you should be proud you create places like that. Had a lovely walk in the woods with ours yesterday and even found a few wild bilberries. Hope you and the family are all well. Best wishes.

To anyone wondering apparently taking the hay away is better as it reduces nutrients going into the soil which is better for wildflowers.

That meadow is absolutely amazing!! I would love to see a video of you walking around and looking for species there! After having had a bit of a flare up with my chronic pain recently and having to stay at home for weeks during peak summer, I finally got out for a while today. Me and my husband took the car to a nearby nature reserve and put down blankets just 50 meters from the car, because I still had no energy to go further. But just there, still we had common blue, dark green fritillary and, which I'm most happy about, quite a few purple hairstreaks flying high up in the oak tree tops. I could lie down on the blanket and look up on them with my binoculars! :D

Just discovered another new wild flower has suddenly appeared in my 'wild garden.' (Don't know what it is. Like a very small, delicate purple Snapdragon). Although insects are really thin on the ground (the Spring started really well, but after the Orange Tip butterflies came out, it was rapidly downhill from then on) - the plants have been floating in thicker and faster every year. This year especially. I think this new one makes it the 6th new flower species that has appeared here. I am seeing a few more Bumble Bees today, I will say that. They, at least, are suddenly doing a little better. But dragonflies and damselflies have been absolutely terrible this year. Usually I see blue, grey and red damselflies, dozens of them. This year - just the one grey one.

Beautiful work, and beautiful video. Would love to see a video about what to do when you have invasive species of plants such as Canadian thistles, birds foot, creeping buttercups,... The ones that the insects seem to like, I have left it as non priority to take it down, but the thistles are so aggressive, and are killing all my native plants that the birds like to eat on, I never see anything on the thistles but the place invasive slugs, too. it's getting to a point that 90% of the things growing in my recently purchased property is all invasive. 😢

For a 150 metre sqaured area of grass, what would you recommend to cut in it September? I don't want to let it go too late before I get organised. I have a strimmer, will this be okay or should I buy a scythe or something else?
@-Pol-
@-Pol- 2 месяца назад
I made do stooping down with a hedge trimmer for the first couple of years. I've had no regrets buying a scythe. It's effectively rendered my Hayter petrol mower and strimmer obsolete. My petrolmower struggles with grass over 10cm (4") and the strimmer shreds and spreads debris all over the place. By comparison the scythe sweeps the cuttings into neat piles and rows which in turn are easy to roll up into heaps with a rake, or even just with the scythe blade. Now when I hear my neighbours using their noisy motor mowers and strimmers I don't miss them at all. I'll never go back.

You can buy quite light scythe models, but have a look for any videos that show you how it's done properly (saves a lot of effort). I've just bought myself a pair on long handled shears, which I will be using to cut some pathways in September, but will leave the rest. I think it much more calming to use hand tools rather than mechanised garden tools. No noise, no pollution, good exercise.
