To be fair, if people are pulling their ads off of youtube due to the content, why does all news articles still have ads? Some are talking about terrorism, videos of suicide bombs going off, pictures of car crashed, death, misery and some happy thoughts. News today isn't happy, it's focused on tragedy and flaws, etc. With all the respect to the people who works with this and takes risks, and does the job damn well, it is required to ask the question. If youtube isn't advertiser friendly, then how can the news be advertiser friendly? I think thats the question we should ask ourselves, as their being highly hypocritical if you ask me, but thats my opinion. Phil, I will always wholeheartedly support you. The world needs a news organization willing to say "be skeptical of everybody even me". That speaks volumes. It shows you care about the truth, about how what you say effects people, and about informing your viewers as best you can. It shows you have integrity; something truly lacking in this world where information is so often used to stoke the fires of outrage and mislead for the sake of views/money. It might be an uphill battle but that will always breed you loyalty and the respect of this community.

I just don't understand why they chose to go after the slingshot channel. I mean he's literally just a good natured guy who likes to build weird slingshots and crossbows. Surely there are things far worse than that on RU-vid which they could have gone after. It seems like such a strange decision.

Can we all just agree, ads on online news articles (WSJ, DailyMail, etc.) shouldn't display until the reader reaches the end of the article? That way, companies would have to at least devote time and effort into keeping readers interested throughout the entirety of the story before making any money.

Pertaining to the last story in Texas if you're going below the speed limit by 10 miles an hour or more you are allowed to pass even if it is a double yellow line. Crum was going well below the speed limit and it's a very common thing for people to go below 10 miles an hour of the speed limit on those back roads. I am a little biased since I am a biker but the law states what they were doing was completely legal and most people don't understand that law in Texas. The biker even got his ticket dismissed in court since they did nothing wrong. Side note please for the love of God always wear your gear you don't know if you run into a person that crazy and gear will save your life.

I myself had a video demonetized for having ONE swear word in it. While this is ridiculous, I can understand why RU-vid is reacting this way to news publications calling it out. Hopefully, this whole situation gets sorted out because it frankly sucks that the traditional media is harping the growth of the online community.

Why don't youtube seperate advertisers into advertisers that are fine with controversial topics and advertisers that aren't instead

Ethan from h3h3 has gained more respect than he has lost from me, simply because of his honesty and ability to own up to his mistakes. Meanwhile the "mainstream media" keeps on loosing any respect and credibility to me, which is both disappointing and scary considering how important they are to us as citizens...

I feel like this is a bigger story than RU-vidrs are making it out to be. HsHs Ethan is the only one really fighting the fight while all the other big RU-vidrs aren't using their fame and platform to their potential to help the future of RU-vidr and to help the smaller channels. This is a community and creators need to come together and support each other.

I think Susan Wojcicki should step down as CEO of RU-vid. I don't think she has done anything for RU-vid that wasn't insignificant or detrimental. I'm pretty sure she is the one who had ultimate say of pulling the plug of Scare PewDiePie season 2. By doing that she did nothing but validate the falsehood that PewDiePie was an anti-semite and hurt RU-vid.

something I don't understand is that all these companies and reporters expect youtube to fix their ad problem by pulling their ads and there for taking away money that would otherwise go to making ad placement better? Personally I think people are holding youtube to a standard that just shouldn't be asked of them. They are a website where you put videos of cats and stuff, and by policing ads, youtube put themselves in a position where anyone can complain about an ad put somewhere where it shouldn't be, and now all these companies are holding a figurative gun to youtube's head and if they just ignored it, companies would've just came back, because the place where i see most of my ads are on youtube and google.

I wouldn't call DailyMail mainstream media, but would definately say WSJ is mainstream. My guess is that many of these people feel RU-vid is or has become an opponent of traditional news sources and like any 24/7 news source they have time slots and headlines to fill. RU-vid certainly has its faults, it could definitely learn to be more public with changes (which it seems they may be learning), but as an open platform for content creation it has to deal with so much more than any traditional media outlet could comprehend. Anyone should applaud that google tries at all to police their content because they receive an average of five hours of video every minute in uploads. No one can expect them to comb through that. They police based on algorithms and with that comes mistakes. Also I don't think the slingshot channel was a good target, and I don't think I would've demonetized that had I personally watched it anyway. What should probably be done is more refined tracking/filters/tags for monetization. If a company doesn't want to attempt to advertise on videos posted from certain countries or about certain topics that are tagged so be it. It should also be understood and perhaps noted in every commercial that the advertiser does not promote the following content.. I think Jackass (TV show) displayed that at the start of every show. All that rant aside Phil, love your show man! Been watching for ten years now, so best of luck with all you're going through and know I'll follow your show wherever it goes.

It feels like all the advertisers are somehow just realizing that the internet isn't censored the way TV is. It's kind of ridiculous actually. Have they ever been on the internet before? Why is this suddenly an issue that mainstream media cares about? Also, is advertising on half of these "racist" videos really any worse than advertising on South Park or Family Guy?

The worst thing about the Daily Mail attack on Yoerg Sprave is that the DM published an article a few years ago showing how to defeat police body armour by aiming a knife at the officers neck and arm pit, where the stab vest doesn't protect them; go figure that's exactly where the London terrorist stabbed and killed the police officer recently. Joerg's video is nothing more than a test against civilian body armour and proving that it isn't fit for purpose. The fact the DM accused him of publishing extremist material, calling his videos vile, that makes my blood boil. Thankfully RU-vid have now removed the strike against his account, and allowed him to re-upload the two videos they took down. The Daily Mail is going to pay for attacking one of the nicest entertainers on RU-vid; they attack one of us, they attack all of us.

I think if twitter made a new tab for subscription based videos they'd really give competition to RU-vid. The popularity is already there, with the design of twitter it would be simple and accessible. I think a lot of RU-vidrs would consider jumping ship.

I have an interesting story that may or may not be related... My 2 year old daughter loves to watch "Toy Pudding" on RU-vid... We pull all of her toys out and play along with the videos to show her the purpose of each toy. Such a cute, innocent little girl with nothing else on her mind but love and genuine excitement from the joy of technology teaching her how to play with her little toy hello kitty kitchen set... THEN... I turn my back for 3 seconds to make my sweet little baby girl a snack ...THEN suddenly OUT OF NO WHERE, I see a fucking HORROR movie trailer (ad) being played on one of the most harmless channels on RU-vid... WTF??? Now, I understand that I can easily take this opportunity to educate my child the difference between real and make-believe... but, to HER, that was very real! it scared the fucking SHIT out of her to the point of hysteria. I don't think the solution to this is "don't let your daughter play with RU-vid" ...because that is absurd. Obviously, I could've turned off ads but that is also not a solution. Because I believe creators deserve their fair share of compensation for the content they upload to the site. I think the solution should be smarter -- it's Google for fuck sake. They can make a car drive by itself but they can't permutate the ad content to fit the channel content?

Thanks DeFranco for covering this, it's bigger than most people realize. The Daily Mail story is THE worst, it definetly feels like an "old" media versus "new" media issue. The same people who reads the Daily Mail will most likely NEVER hear of the other side of the story due to the Daily Mail and other news organisations more or less totally ignoring the uproar we've seen online. "Old" media very seldom corrects these kinds of things instead they just move on and screw over the next subject of interest. The H3H3 issue isn't that clear cut but I still believe that Google and RU-vid is doing everything they can to stop commercials from playing on videos with questionable content and at the same time trying to keep the creators happy. It's a hard thing to do.

RU-vid is like that jerk boss at the retail job you hate. They sometimes have to be assholes to make sure the entire company stays afloat. You hate them for not paying enough, and for reprimanding you for not wearing the stupid tie the company forces you to wear. But when somebody throws a hit piece at the company, you and your boss both band together because you both need your job. RU-vid is not the perfect co-worker or boss. But they are still our boss. Great video, way to cover the facts, cover your butt and clear things up. I was wondering about the "photoshopped images" thing, now I understand what happened there. Hopefully things get straightened out sometime soon, because we're all getting hit it seems. I've seen a huge drop in revenue as well, even though my content is completely non-controversial and I haven't had videos demonetized.
