Most of the money spent on this hobby is for the last 1% and even then it doesn't guarantee the audio will be good, just that you paid more money. I can see the money on the variations being worth it though since it actually holds performance with what it costs as opposed to some $1000+ gear that's there to flex more than anything else

I am not so sure if it really is a theoretical problem. I am also not sure if most companies really try to tune their IEMs to the Harman curve. But there are single DD IEMs that come it quite close (admittedly not as close as the Variations or other hybrid ones, the ThieAudio Monarch, the Symphonium Helios, the Softears RS 10 or the AKG N5005), but if there would be investment in tweaking I do think it would be possible. These are even cheap IEMs, like the Sony MH755 (crazy $10, if available ) or the Korean Neusonik Direm E3 ($35).

I've been thinking about the possibility of developing an IEM that has a dac/amp and a micro controller inside, that uses cables ending in USB C or Lightning. Inside it would have an unremarkable but low distortion DD and maybe a BA. When the sound comes through the cable, a micro controller could do EQ to your desired target and then convert that audio data with the dac/amp to be played through the DD+BA. At first I thought about housing everything inside the IEM and letting people use the cables that they want, but you'd have to convert the analog data to digital, process it and then convert it to analog again. This method might also make the IEM to have very low sensitivity since it needs more power to process that stuff, or maybe it could use a simple battery. Doing any of those could let you have an IEM that sound however you want on any device without having to deal with software.
@Sharur1
@Sharur1 2 года назад
how do you control the EQ?
@joko49perez
@joko49perez 2 года назад
@@Sharur1 it's an idea, but I guess you could have a microcontroller that can run an equalizer on the data it receives from the phone or an ADC. Then it spits the sound data to a DAC/AMP and it goes on like normal. The idea is knowing exactly how the DD+BA sounds and how they work with the EQ. When you have full knowledge of how to manipulate them to sound how you like, you can do anything. This might be too large to fit on an IEM housing tho, I don't know.
@joko49perez
@joko49perez 2 года назад
@@Sharur1 omfg i read it wrong. I won't delete the comment but still. It could be through the cable itself. You can send data through a jack, apple did it will the ipod shuffle and there's other devices that can transmit other data through that. It would be even easier to do it with a USBC connection, since it would work exactly like one of those external hw equalizers. Another less desirable but much simpler way would be to just do a TWS IEM and on the software allow a PEQ or something. But I hate Bluetooth.
@JoelHernandez-tz3vk
@JoelHernandez-tz3vk 2 года назад
@@joko49perez I'd like the idea of a 2.4gHz usb-c/lightning dongle wireless IEM because of how much stronger its signal is over bluetooth. Too bad i'm probably the only person in this planet who wants that. Edit: This is also a perfect oportunity to also take inspiration from the KZ E10 and put the reciever outside the frame of the IEM so that the receiver hangs over the ear. This means the IEM's drivers have all the housing space to themselves, meaning you should be able to cram bigger/more drivers than you'd be able to if the receiver shared space with the drivers. Edit 2: I'd LOVE to have the resouces to do this myself but... I just don't.

I don't quite like the Variations as much as Sharur but U12t is unnatural in every sense. the bass quality is good but it cannot reproduce acoustic drums, percussions or bass as realistic as a good dynamic driver could do. and that upper midrange scoop gives some space for the air region to excel.

Do you know for sure that the EST drivers in the variations are actually assigned their own crossover? reading around, I found a post sourced from a Dunu representative that suggested the EST drivers are used primarily to alter timbre, and are often implemented with what seems like output that is low to the point of having small/minimal effect on SPL. I contacted moondrop about this, as I don't see anywhere on the variations' product page that they're actually using a three way crossover (unusual because it's touted for both the s8 and blessing 2), was wondering if you'd already investigated.

"In order to achieve excellent frequency response and consistent phase across all frequencies, Variations inherited and improved the hybrid crossover design of Blessing2. Through the 3D printed precision acoustic channel combined with damping materials to achieve low-frequency physical band-pass filtering and medium-high-frequency low-pass smoothing filtering, coupled with accurate RC low-pass filter circuit, high-pass filter circuit and equalization circuit, Variations can show very ideal frequency response and phase indicators." www.moondroplab.com/variations

@@Sharur1 this is of course implying that the measured frequency response of a flawed simulator known for exaggerating bass response, is the actual low end response felt by the listener. like I said. IEMs leak low end and warmth so most manufacturers add midbass to compensate by ear. The DCA stealth frequency response curve may sound correct on a headphone but on shallow insertion IEMs it could range anywhere from bass light to absolutely unlistenable trash with no body(depending on fit, seal, and the individual’s own ear canal shape probably) Even crinacle who loves flat mids somewhat informally confirmed this listening to tanchjim echo where his main gripe was how it was too bass light despite it having a pretty “appropriate” Harman tuck

Sorry, that's bullshit. Multi-BA or multi driver are only 'better' if the phase is flawless. 99% of multi BA/driver earphones are imperfect designed, to say it with love. All inears struggle with the ear canal resonance that provides interference problems (most dip and peak around 8K / 40 mm wavelength). Peaks must be corrected by EQ for each ear canal individual (length varies from 30-45 mm). A deep insert like final audio design shifts the problem to higher frequencies, so easier to handle in this form. At the end, you can get good results (EQed) with both, single DD or multi driver. But as long multi BA/driver are not setup flawless in mainstream products, you get better chance for acceptable sound with average single drivers (and less phase problems).

I wonder if a 14mm DD bass and a 6mm full range DD could work. At least I assume the reason DD typically don't do treble well is due to membrane breakup in larger sizes rather than a moving coil being a concept doomed from the start. If they were the Vifa DQ25SC16-04 wouldn't be a recomendation from John Krutke who is probably the most measurements guy I've ever seen when it comes to loudspeakers. Or I wonder if using said 14mm and a full range BA and a tweeter BA would be unquestionably better anyways. All this thinking and no answers anywhere makes my head hurt. ... But speaking of John Krutke. According to him you can beak down the performance of ANY loudspeaker into 2 factors: Linear distortion, which is any deviation of the speaker from the target curve; in the case of a loudspeaker, dead flat; and non-linear distortion, which harmonic distortion and impulse response are part of. So as I understand it all THE TOTL IEM would probably have a 200Hz 6dB shelf peaking at 60Hz (or is it 100Hz?) Etymotic target, with a THD 40dB+ below fundamental across the entire frequency range, with no sign of ringing at any frequency. Edit: I wanna mount a home theater eventually with a pair of Cinetor-evo and a pair of GRS 18PT-8 in RiPol layout for bass.

Dan Clark Stealth is also single driver lol, ah but ofc you're talking about IEM adding BA also comes with a cost of higher THD even the lowest recorded THD in a BA can't be lower than 0.2%, and also need a higher skill to tune due to their higher acoustic output impedance, something that's hard to do even for Moondrop. I hope variations will be their last hybrid configurations unless BA manufacturer can lower their THD.

I'd say multi driver doesn't matter As you said multi driver earphones doesn't have enough treble response above 10k they fall down But some of them have that and much better sound than multi driver Iems I won't name it's a secret anyways but how DT770 Etymotics CX180 HD6xx Verum 1 are able to deliver most of the frequency ranges I will say single driver earphones are still better than multi drivers They sound good and they can fit in ears better I used a Mini Subwoofer a tweeter and a dynamic driver in a Over ear headphone And I compared it to the same headphone with one dynamic driver Somehow Single driver one sounds better over entire frequency range Multi drivers have issue they can distort the whole sound or make some tracks sound like pink noise

@@Sharur1do you know why Dynamic drivers don't have more extended treble above 10k only because to save your ears from any high frequency damage ear fatigue titanus etc..... That's the reason A single driver can also produce every frequency if it's tuned to be that you actually didn't mention the dynamic driver covers all frequencies and it's louder than most drivers as well It will cover the whole frequencies of tweeters mix it and give a good sound output Tweeters can lead to some serious ear fatigue and sharp treble does affects hearing loss

I can see what you're saying and I would agree in that I think a dual dynamic driver configuration would be best. 1 highpassed dynamic microdriver near/inside the nozzle and a larger dynamic lowpassed woofer. However the argument that you can't tune a single DD without mud is false. You could simply add an electrical filter to the single DD that drops 200 Hz. The true evil are BAs imo. They were never intended for high quality playback. Only for hearing aids. Especially in the 90s the small size and high sensitivity was more important than the BA's shortcomings: limited bandwidth and high distortion. Nowadays even hearing aids start to use small DDs (diameter < 6 mm) because they are simply better. Only reason they are hyped in the audiophile scene is because they used to be expensive and different. Of course you want a BA in your $20 IEM when the expensive TOTL halo scam uses them too.

Imagine for a minute a food critic in his late twenties or early thirties- this food critic goes around writing reviews and narrating these reviews on camera. The critic goes into great detail discussing the nuances of flavor of foods from all around the globe. The critic makes a list of favorites, makes a point to describe in very strong and certain terms, which foods are amazing and which are to be avoided at all costs. The critic is even very critical and personal in some reviews. He seems to attack the geographic locations of the food, the chefs and even other critics or fans of the food who have tried the food and loved it. Now come to find out, this critic never even been to any of the countries or locations where the food is served. Much less even tried the cuisine that the critic is so judgmental of and espouses to be an expert on. The critic only knows what he knows about the various cuisines based off of online recipes, vlogs and stories written by other actual food reviewers or chefs. The food critic in question has barely been out of his own neighborhood, never mind that this critic has not travelled and actually tasted these various cuisines. This critic has only tasted the foods from his home town or foods prepared by his mom, whom he still lives with. Now imagine we are talking about an audio gear critic. You have found this critic.
