Why Music Matters - Brian Balmages

This video was created in response to the massive feedback I received from an earlier video. This particular message is designed to be played just before or during a concert to the audience. Many musicians spend time sharing the importance of music with each other, and my hope is to create a small platform to help people share it with audience members who support music, and perhaps some audience members who will start to support music after all of our efforts!

I still remember when I first met Mr. Balmages at an All-Region weekend in January of this year; my director was the organizer for the All-Region high school band 1, so I got the pleasure to meet him and speak to him, and he is probably the most inspiring person I've met in the music world. He gave an amazing speech, much like this one, right before we played our last piece, and it really solidified my decision to pursue a degree in music in college. Thank you for being you Mr. Balmages!!

I enjoy that you have composed using outdoor wind chimes. You have started an obsession of mine with the composition of Grace, and I very much enjoy wind chimes now.

Thank you so much Mr.Balmages, you give me hope. I had the honor of being conducted by you in Spontaneous Beings at WIBC 2017. It feels every day like the career I want will never work. I just want to be a musician in any way and make a living off of it, and this video really helped me and gave me hope.

That's the problem with government ran schools, they just care about the productivity and obedience of the students when they become adults.

FWIF, my Catholic grade school cut our art classes in seventh grade-- the problem is not with the government, but with the general perception of what we should value in education.

Hey. I'm a 15 year old high school student in South Carolina. I've played the trumpet part in many of your works, and of other composers as well. People don't place the same value on music as they used to, yet they expect it all the same... It makes me sad. I'm in the advanced course system, so now I can't do band at all anymore because my school schedule won't allow it. I'm continuing with private lessons, but the education system in SC is already underfunded, and the music program is the worst part. But what we play is what's important, and this nation needs the realize how much effort is needed to build a really strong musical influence in the U.S. But the work of you, and other composers have helped to make it better. We don't have money, but we have good music to play, and creative ideas to work with because of people like you, who follow their dreams instead of giving up for the easier option. Thank you so much for making this video, and I really hope it gets around to people, so they'll realize the importance of music. And for the music you write, because it really gives some really good value to the music we can practice and perform. You're an excellent composer, and I'm very glad you did follow your dreams.

Marshall Allan I'm with you. Given I didn't start band until 8th Grade I am also really sad about how systems like Greenville County, Spartanburg Districts, and other areas underappreciate music and under fund their programs. Greenville makes the programs in the high schools and middle schools do fundraisers to get their new Besson, John Packer, Miraphone, and Bach instruments and don't even fund for schools to have decent auditoriums that barely fill up when so many places don't care. Spartanburg District 4 is an exception however, since it actually charges us low compared to other places, but we still have worn down equipment from 20 or 30 years ago that doesn't work anymore and it doesn't get fixed. Or hadn't until someone had shown up as the new director and in 2 years got a couple marimbas, four speakers for percussion with a new vib, drum set, synthesizer, 6 euphoniums, 2 tubas, and 5 baritones. And he is working to get even more replacements for what we have and giving us professional grade instruments and equipment we haven't had in stock until he shown up and got the school to buy such things. Music directors have always worked hard to keep bands and orchestras together and I have gotta be grateful as my Emeritus in Woodruff got me into Region for Euph and Tuba in two consecutive years.

"People don't place the same value on music as they used to, yet they expect it all the same... It makes me sad." Very well said. Too many parents come to band concerts expecting a certain level of performance, but they forget that the kids have to be much more dedicated nowadays.

I am a freshman in high school, and my 8th grade band director almost ruined my band experience. But I didn't quit. I love music too much. We are playing Electricity for our concert, and I am deeply in love with this song. Even Call Of The Wild in All City band last year. I fell in love with it. Your music is absolutely amazing, and I love it. Your pieces have made me want to stay in band until I graduate from College, and even after that. Thank you for writing such great music. :)

I am disgusted that schools would even do that. I am a flute player in an advanced band and I've played your music. I fell in love with music. And your right, music is a way to shut out everything. Music is a place where we as people have to work together to create a musical emotion for the audience. If we shut out music from our schools,we practically shut out everything. Most professional orchestra/band players start in elementary schools and what do the orchestra /band people do? They create music for movies to add emotion, they play in plays, they sometimes play for very popular musicians too. In fact, some of our big pop stars started in band. What do you listen to when you at a party? Music. What do you listen to in the car? Music. Without band, orchestra, or choir where's the excitement in football games, movies, and life itself? I'm with you brian! Music deserves to stay in schools. If they removed band from my school, I would be devastated. P.S: I've played many of your peices and they are amazing! I also wrote a letter to you in the winter of last year. :)

I believe you are the guest clinician for Dixie band Camp in Conway this year and I can’t wait to meet you and learn from you. You seem like a pure soul and I look up to you. Thank you for giving yourself to us through your music.

Wonderful thoughts especially in identifying what society values here in the states. We are now spending billions on stadiums and less on the arts while the rest of the world laughs at us. Without band I would not have made it to the collegiate level. I struggled in mathematics and other subjects. But I was great at my horn and it gave me a chance. Right now it seems we are taking those chances away from the children that need the chance that I and many of my colleagues received. Thank you Brian!

We just performed Forever Joyful last night. I first ran across this piece my first year of teaching orchestra at my current school. I first performed it with our Advance high school level group. Four years later we performed it with our junior high level group and they sounded great and absolutely LOVED it. You're right. Band or orchestra or any activity at school may be THE reason school is bearable. The place where they feel safe and cared for. It's a place that makes them feel confident and courageous because their director got excited and exclaimed, "YES!!" that one time they got that really hard lick down. That set off a reaction in their brain that cannot be turned off. I just got a text from a band student of mine from 1994 reminded me of the time we talked about the 6P's. Proper Prior Prep Prevents Poor Performance. My elementary band director wrote that on my Straight System Snare method book...which I still have. She texted me because she taught the 6p's to her daughter, who is now a band director, and said her daughter gave her band kids the same 6P's talk. That's four generations of band kids who have now shared that talk. It made me feel all warm inside knowing that this students from almost 30 years ago credited me for teaching her the 6P's and that she was so moved by her daughter using it that she had to track me down to tell me. Pretty cool. Good video!!!

When I was in 6th grade, I joined the beginning band. I learned trombone and loved it. I loved it so much that I wanted to be a band teacher some day. In my Freshmen year in high school, I had an assignment where I was supposed to present about what I wanted to be some day. Well, I was contemplating about how I wanted to be a band teacher, and then an idea popped in my head. I love your pieces. I've played Kitsune: The Fox Spirits, Jungle Dances, Sparks, and a couple of others. I wanted to be a composer. I am currently in my sophomore year of high school, and I feel inspired by you. Thanks for your contributions to music, because that is likely going to cause indirect contributions to music as well. Thank you.

Mr. Balmages, I want to thank you for this video. Music is one of the most important things that people can discover, and keep discovering over time, gaining new tastes and feelings for music. My oldest brother joined band a long time ago. I followed. I became a clarinetist, a conductor, and more recently, a composer of shorter pieces. It was a journey that I enjoy embarking on every day. My RU-vid channel is dedicated to my biggest passion right now, which is conducting, and showing people that they can express to the world that they can do anything that their hearts desire. A long time ago, I learned how to conduct your piece entitled "Evocatio", and as ominous of a piece as it is, it was one of the hardest for me to learn how to conduct. My high school's symphonic band played it years ago, and I was drawn to it, to add it to my conducting repertoire. I was inspired by my former band director back in middle school, and I have made a lot of progress over time. It shows that in me. So again, thank you, Mr. Balmages, for this inspirational video. Music is one of the only things on Earth that will never die down. It keeps going because of the people who enjoy it, make it happen, conduct it at concert performances, and keep it as alive as it ever was. Thank you.

He constantly mocked us about our performance and how we weren't doing it the way he wanted us to do it. He was also constantly putting us down because of it. We didn't really work on his piece too much since we had musicfest nationals so care about, But he probably thought his song was the only song we worked on. He kept telling us how we were a "good" band and not a "great" one. After the rehearsal our music teacher said that he felt like Brian wasn't being very nice to us and that he'll tell Brian that instead of him conducting us, he himself will, which made the whole band relieved. Another thing was while he was conducting nobody knew where he was or what beats he was beating out for us so we all had to solely depend on ourselves for time. When I say that I don't mean we don't count ourselves but like you look and your conductor and like you're sure, and also if you ever lose count your conductor will help you that kind of stuff. If you ever tried reading his conducting you'll probably see him drawing circles in the air or doing random shapes for you with his baton, like honestly what did they teach him in conducting class? That was my experience, other people said they had a fun time talking to him but I don't think they experience his teaching. Don't get me wrong his music is amazing I love his work but personally he needs to work on his conducting and how to help a band move forward if they aren't doing it the way he wants it to then help them improve not just by putting them down about it. He says a lot of inspiring things though. Sorry for the long paragraph.

5 years later, it hasn't gotten better. Due to the pandemic, some of the hardest hit are people who work in the arts and entertainment industry. And you're not wrong, I am one of those students who looks forward to band class every day. If the school took it out, it would devastate the around 200 kids who are in the band program. Also, I very much enjoy your pieces. Raging Machines, Among the Clouds, and Elements are some of my favorite pieces composed by you.
