Terry Harpold, Ph.D, describes works of art, myth, and fiction that open us to the vital connectivity between our observations of the natural world and the products of our creative imagination. Our responses to climate crisis in the coming century, he proposes, must go beyond practical solutions, however essential they will be. We must also embrace vital connectivity and its recreation of new and lasting meaning in a world in crisis." Dr. Terry Harpold completed his undergraduate studies at the State University of New York at Stony Brook - English BA - followed by a year abroad, studying philosophy and literary theory in Paris. Graduate school (PhD) in Comparative Literature at the University of Pennsylvania. He began teaching at the University of Florida in late 2000, where his teaching and research have been primarily in new media theory, digital humanities, science fiction, climate studies, and environmental humanities. He’s been nominated five times for College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Mentoring and Teaching Awards, and was a winner of the CLAS Teacher of the Year Award in 2008 and 2020. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

So important to take into account the RATE of change in Australia. Natural cycle - a few thousand years to rise 400 feet. So many generations! Climate change so much faster.

This pandemic has taught us so many things and one is to help our nature heal by keeping our environment clean. I wish the earth is healing well now🙏🌻🌞

One lesson learned is that there never was a Pandemic. Not enough people died to call it a Pandemic. Call it propaganda.

That was a philosophical and a literary talk. An anthropological lesson at best. I still can’t find the vital connectivity between observation and the natural world and how we can apply this to climate change. I enjoyed his oration though.

Wow. This speech was absolutely brilliant and captivating! I too believe in the phenomenal, ans undeniable, power of storytelling, yet I do not think I had ever thought about it seriously in this particular way; that stories can also be used to capture our world, in a real sense, and save, preserve and protect the truth of the "Now". Thank you so much for this speech :)

This was amazing. I believe we really have to start looking at the old ways and incorporate them into how we live such that we again become the stewards of the planet. This means we must change. We must change how we do business first and foremost. I think that most of the damage humans have done involve the industrial practices we allow. Instead of working against the environment, we need creative ways to shape the communities around the environment. That is how it was done before we forgot. If we could all just work together, it would be so much nicer for everything on Earth. The Earth is capable of healing itself if we let it instead of developing ways to massacre each other. Does that make me an idealist? If I am, I’m proud to be one. How much more progress could we make if we put all our minds to it instead of developing weapons for war. Why is it needed if we could work as a team? How much less tax would we need to pay then? Hah. Dream on, right? Sad.

Knowledge is of two parts, just knowing about a thing and second is applying in life when the situation comes, you may not apply all your knowledge in life, when the situation comes timely application of your knowledge is more important, so always learn in life😁 Good Morning have a nice day 😃

If it was a Utopia that we had where all humans believed in climate change and global warming things would have been different. The early warnings from the 70's and 80's that some heeded but the rest blindly flowed on. Plowing deeper into the hole . Even today we have sceptical people that don't believe. They in some ways can't see or hear the tsunami coming as the sit on the beach.. I tried to actually debate one of those but they failed and dropped any focus on the issue to take a pot shot at me .. Sadly most of them will never learn.. but when some of them are in positions of power politically speaking.. we will all lose.
