This was actually a really encouraging conversation to listen to, because the pay cut is something that, at first, seemed totally discouraging and prohibitive to me. I commented on your (Steven's) other video, re: the Material Handler position, that I didn't think I could survive on $14/hr., unless I got a second job to supplement my primary income. But realistically, the more I think about it, oftentimes what we consider a sacrifice is actually an investment. It's all just a matter of shifting perspective. As they say, "Where there's a will, there's a way." The end justifies the means. The hardship of financial restrictions won't last, whereas the education and experience are enduring assets. So, thank you guys. This has helped me formulate a rudimentary plan, even though I'm probably a long way out and have only really just begun researching the subject in recent weeks.

Just call a company and tell them you are interested in becoming an electrician. They will give you the next steps to take. Companies need workers. Just research as much as possible, work while you learn. It's not complicated.@@DavidPerezgetfit

Thank you for this video! I started my apprenticeship the same time as you guys. I didn't pass my first JW test in September. Tomorrow I take my test again! I woke up nervous. But watching this video was really encouraging. It's been a lot of hard work. And now I'm at the finish line! I was a heroin addict and barely kept a job for more than a month at a time for over 15 years of my addiction. I got saved in a jail cell and been sober for almost 9 years now and have a pretty good supply chain/logistics resume but the financial ceiling is relatively low without a 4 year-$50k degree that will land me in a cubicle wanting to punch myself in the face from boredom everyday. I've been a little apprehensive/sketched bc I'm 36 and I thought my window had passed for new career ventures but with all your encouragement and ample amount of info I am now prepping and literally relearning math I never even knew so I can pursue the apprenticeship at my local in Richmond Virginia and take my aptitude test in August of 2023. You got this @MattTate I had to relearn math too, after 10 years away from it, i barely remembered division. After a couple months of hard study, I took the aptitude test yesterday, and passed. I will say, though I scored 100% on the reading on iprep, the actual test was harder, so make sure not only to study math but reading too.
I made the choice to submit my application last year around September after working for 2 years after high school wondering what to do, im 21 now. I went to tech for electrical and have done many side jobs since then. I worked for this small non-union father-son company while in HS still, and they left a bad taste in my mouth because it was just miserable working with them and they hardly trained me, and that just pushed me away from it since I graduated in ‘18. I wasnt sure, i just couldnt commit to looking into it again then i talked to my buddy who was in the union and he told me basically all the great things all your videos go over.. Well, here we are, my apprenticeship starts in a couple months and these videos help a ton and make me think I definitely made the right choice. Love your channel. Keep it up brother!

Man I can definitely relate to him, I’m currently a union roofer making 26 with benefits and all, I dm’d this girl that is in the same ibew that I applied to and she told me that when she started she was making 22(about 4 years ago) I’m sure it went up by now and although it’s not much of a gap like his (29 to 16?) it’s still a difference and I hope it doesn’t affect me on rent and stuff
Completed 2/3 interviews last week. I have my last one on the 18th. Seemed like the interview personnel didn’t like the fact that I applied to multiple chapters. I told them I’m not taking any chances and that I KNOW this is the career for me. I’m going through so many emotional states throughout the day. Hi Stephen, I hope you are doing great. I was just wondering. I took a few courses in high school that was sort of related to beginner level electrical work. I learned how to correctly set up wiring for outlets and lights. I also have a really good understanding for tools since I use them during my down time when it comes to working on cars. Man, this might've been the perfect video for me. I'm 26, and I've been a technician for Dish Network for 3 years now and I'm currently making $26 in Colorado. And the current starting inside Wireman Apprenticeship rate is $16.70. So I'd be in a very similar position taking a big pay cut. Only big difference is my wife just left me so I have no family to worry about, so I feel this is the perfect time to work on this and start a career. Also hoping my previous skills help me get ahead with my placement.

I worked about a year (almost 2,000 hours) for a non-union electrical company making about $12.50 an hour with pretty poor benefits. I just now got accepted into the IBEW and will be making $20.25 (take home) an hour to start. As well as a pension and good health benefits. :D
Good for you for already looking into this! The sooner you can start the better. There are so many people who start their career as an electrician later on in life and wish that they would have started sooner, so it's awesome that you're already planning on it. ⚡️
Hey Christan, I'm a Journeyman Inside Wireman out of Local 494 in Milwaukee. I wish you all the best in your pursuit! If you are not able to go through the application process and get into this year's apprenticeship class, I highly recommend becoming a Comstruction Wireman (CW) in your Local Union and starting the apprenticeship application process ASAP. As a CW, you'll be set up to go through the interview process with confidence and if you show up on time with a good attitude, follow directions, and bust your butt, your journeymen will be happy to write you letters of recommendation. Plus, CWs make good entry level wages and benefits in most Locals (depends on cost of living and market share in your area). 1st years sometimes stumble and struggle with 1st year AC theory and pipe-bending because of weak math skills, so if you're not comfortable with algebra and trigonometry, it would be advisable to brush up on those skills or take a refresher technical math course.
I have my interview coming up soon. I almost feel in the same boat as your brother was. I’m currently making $31.50/hr, so that pay cut would definitely be kind of hard. Another factor for me is I live in Keizer and the training center is in Portland so the commute is going to be a pain.
I know this is a US channel but have applied for a Pre Apprenticeship as a sparky in AUS, The process in AUS is different but in other ways similar its like 3-5 years to get fully qualified. But I’m still enjoying your content. I had like a Literacy and Numeracy test today I think I did ok. I’m still not %100 decided yet as I am like leaving a Bachelor of Music at like a Diploma level. I would be leaving with less student Debt or HECS though and government funding rules have changed so Sparky Pre Apprenticeship will be Free Tuition. My Diploma research also says that Musicians do need to get creative with their income streams. I have considered being a Sparky before but it looks like I might actually go ahead. At least this way I can still pursue music in my spare time it could be a really great opportunity. Maybe one day I will find myself living in the states as that’s like another dream. So many dreams so maybe I won’t get to achieve them all but yeah. Pay for sparkles in AUS is still very good too.

Is that a really high ranking? I'm wondering what to expect with the wait time currently for Portland? 6 months? A year? I know that my ranking can go up or down depending on new applicants who rank. I have a question and hopefully you can answer, but is community college any worse than a union apprenticeship. Will I be at a competitive disadvantage entering the workforce coming from a community college.
How are we able to tell if the union and or the city we live in will have steady work? Or how do you recommend that we find if a city has stable work if we're willing to relocate? How can we assess if it's a good union or not before becoming a member?

Im in the same boat that your brother was in. Im 25 and i was making good money at my previous job but it wasnt fulfilling. I interviewed for my local IBEW union yesterday and although im going to be taking a serious pay cut, i know the short term sacrifice will be worth it in the long run.
Did the same thing and don’t regret it at all. Exact age and everything was making good money in 3 weeks I’ll finally be making what I was before after 3 years in the program. BUT not hating your life every day at your current job is great. Try and pay down any debts you have because your first 2 years of really do suck. Almost unbearably bad honestly. Eye on the prize.
I work in solar, also in the PNW. We had a 20 year veteran roofer join us for a week before saying it was a tough job (but I think he was more concerned with the delayed gratification aspect - 2 years to get that EL02, to match or exceed his pay as a roofer, etc.). It's been my 'foot in the door' into the electrical industry, but also what I've believed is important since I was a kid. Have either of you ever been offered opportunities to work in renewable energy with the IBEW, or know anyone who has? I have seen some promotional footage indicating IBEW 'somewhere' is engaged in solar (believe it was an NJATC promotional clip). Is the $50.35 gross or net pay out there? I'm currently working full time and in college full time (10 creds math) to bump up my rank - still waiting on the IBEW since 2019. I may have my 02 by the time they get me in (will I have an electrical engineering degree before they get me in also?), but still pushing for it. Did you (Stephen) get your J card yet or coming up within next few months?
Hey, I know this is off topic to the video but I was hoping I could catch you on a more recent video! Do you know if the test is an accumulative grade, like is it the grade you get for both the math and English portion that needs to satisfy the 70% to pass, or is it you need at least a 70% on the math portion and a 70% on the English portion?
I’m in the exact exact same spot right now, I make like $60k a year right now and could probably maintain it and live fine, but I’m trying real hard to save up and be fine while i am making $20 per hour as a first year. Sucks to be sacrificing that pay but I think it’s worth it in long run

I would like to let you know that i watched your previous videos about prepping for the IBEW interview and making a portfolio, and now 4 months after my interview and aptitude test i just received an email today that i was accepted (I got rank #20 not sure if that is good or not). So I appreciate your advice. The only problem is I started a Job as a fire alarm tech apprentice and now I am struggling with my decision also lol
Hey Jacob! Wow, congratulations on your rank! That's 3x better than the rank that I got! #20 is really great, especially considering that thousands of people apply every year, so you should be really proud of that. I would really highly recommend that you take the opportunity to join! Which IBEW Local did you apply for? In short, with the wages, benefits, top notch schooling, versatility of a journeyman electrician license, how multifaceted a career as an electrician is (which keeps things fun and interesting), etc, I would really urge you to take the apprenticeship opportunity with the IBEW. Plus, your fire alarm skills can be put to good use as an electrician in the program too. You'll just have to deal with getting paid more than a fire alarm tech 😉 I think that years from now, if you accept the offer the join the IBEW you'll look back and be very happy that you did. Personally, this has been one of the best decisions that I've ever made in my life. I had a similar question to someone who watched this video. Check out my response to @federalshock 's comment. If you applied for Local 48 then all of the info in that comment will also directly apply to you too. Hope that helps in your decision! You should definitely do it. ⚡️
What if you have electrical experience and it's nonunion. Will the IBEW take that experience into consideration and bump you up from a one year apprenticeship to a higher level? Anyone know how that works?
I’ve been a registered nurse for 26 years and have been stuck at the same wage for at least the last six. And homecare doesn’t pay as well as hospitals either. I’m considering a career change at the age of 50 with one kid in college and another soon to graduate high school. My wife is also a nurse and we are very comfortable making over $200k combined. So cutting my pay in half to start a new career path is a bit scary. This conversation was helpful in helping me make a decision. Pray for me if you would, please.
I don't earn much in the current industry I'm at, and would be earning more off the bat if I were to be accepted into the program, but that comfort is what's also keeping me from even applying. I'm not really sure what it is I'm fearing.
What would you say are the chances of a single mother of a 5 year old being accepted as an apprentice? What are the hours like for apprentices? Would it be frowned upon if I submitted an application, recognizing that an apprenticeship would require serious commitment, but also having to balance the realities of parenthood? (I e. School schedules, occasional illness) Can you offer any insight as to what an apprenticeship experience might be like for single parents? Do working hours/schedules frequently change (from job to job)? While not expecting everything to bend to my schedule, would it likewise be out of line to be upfront about the reality that I'm a single parent? I'm in the same boat just a bayarea journeyman carpenter trying to feed my family. I'm currently making 60$ an hr but job is slowing because of covid. My body all banged up and tired of the carpenter cut throat world. So I'm really contemplating whether I should take a 40$ pay cut and start over. Hoping to get some advice if possible?
So i recently applied to local 48. And got naked #90. And was offered pre apprenticeship. In your opinion what have you heard about the pre apprenticeship? I have a job now. And I’m super worried to quit my payed job for pre apprenticeship and have to wait months/years to be called up to apprenticeship. Should I wait for my number or pre apprenticeship? If you go non union for an apprenticeship can that journeyman license work in unions also ? Or would you have to repeat an apprenticeship for or every entry into a new area? And great videos man keep it up❗️
Hey Quentin! That's a great question. No matter which route you go, once you have your journeyman's license, it can be used at any job (whether union or non-union). You wouldn't need to repeat the apprenticeship for any reason. I'm partial to the IBEW because I know what an incredible opportunity is is, so I would really highly recommend going that route if you're just starting out. I apprentice you watching! ⚡️
@@quentin7875 in my local what they do is non union journeyman that have there state licenses will take a test and if you can pass all the test you come in as a book 1 journeyman. If you can’t pass it they offer classes at the Jatc or will offer you like a 3rd or 4th year class . But most guys will pass and get organized in.

Hey Alfonso! Right on, that's awesome to hear that you're considering this as a career. What are you currently going to college for? Are you working towards a degree that will be necessary for your future career or are you wanting to finish just for the sake of finishing? Here at Local 48, our training center has a partnership with a local community college, so by the time that we complete our apprenticeship we will also have a nearly completed associates degree. Since I took some community college classes before getting into the apprenticeship, I will most likely get my associates degree without having to take any additional classes, which will be pretty cool. I'd say that if this is something that you really want to pursue then you should go for it. It's a really great career and I'd highly recommend it. You can even use this time while you're in college to improve your chances of getting in by taking electrical related courses. ⚡️

Man I've been trying to get in for the past year and a half.. They keep telling me to watch the website (ECA) for an apprentice application section, and it's read "coming shortly" for like 6 months. But I'm calling the unions, should I be calling contractors instead? If you have any advice let me know. p.s I'm a roofer right now too, but I'd much rather have a real trade. lol, jk

Ibew all the way. You join the Ibew do the apprenticeship and become a union journeyman. You also have the opportunity to travel to other Ibew locals to work .
Hey @federalshock, thanks for reaching out! First off, congratulations on your rank! That's a huge accomplishment and not easy to achieve. You scored better than both my brother and me! I'm definitely partial to going the union route because I personally know what an incredible opportunity it is, especially as a new apprentice. You're pretty much guaranteed to get in if you accept the offer, so it's going to be your choice. Here are some reasons why I think it would great to go the IBEW route with Local 48: First, all of your schooling will be free. Yes, you'll have union dues, but they are very small as an apprentice and will be pennies compared to what you would typically pay for a non-union apprenticeship. Not only that, but all of your books (including your code books) will be given to you for free. You will also be given all of the hand tools that you will be needed during your boot camp with Local 48. They're a very high quality set of tools and they're yours to keep. If I remember correctly they were worth over $600 in total. Aside from all of the free stuff, the schooling is second to none. Local 48 is actually one of the top training centers in the whole nation, so while your apprenticeship will possibly last longer, your education will almost certainly be better. Education aside, you'll also get those guaranteed raises throughout your apprenticeship. You might even be making more as a fourth year apprentice in the IBEW than you would as a non-union journeyman. Some companies probably have great wages, but with the IBEW it will be guaranteed. As I'm sure you know, starting pay is around $20/ hr and by the time you graduate your apprenticeship you will be at $50.35/ hr. By then we will most likely have gotten more raises to I'm sure it will be at least $55/ hr by then, if not more. The benefits/ pension are another thing to really consider. They're one of the biggest reasons why I actually considered getting into the IBEW apprenticeship. I know as a 26 year old with a wife and two little girls, my family is very well taken care of. The whole benefit package is $27.56/ hr that your employer pays on your behalf, so if you include that to the $50.35/ hr wages that you'll be receiving then you'll basically be making $77.91/ hr ($162,000/ year in wages and benefits or $104,728/ year if you don't include benefits). It's a lot to think about, but I can say that if I were in your shoes there is no way that I would pass up this opportunity. The non-union route is definitely a viable path to getting your license, but I think years from now if you choose to go with the IBEW that you'll be very happy you did. Plus, if you go back to back you can actually still finish your apprenticeship in four years if you really want to. Hope that helps in your decision!
Thanks for all that information! I’m mainly worried about the schooling part, I hear the non union is a bit easier because it’s stretched out over the whole school year. My friend is in IBEW as well and I see when he has school he is always stressed out, I’m scared to be that way and fail out lol. It’s gonna be a hard decision.

Transitioned from law enforcement to a desk job. Absolutely hate my desk job now it’s so boring it’s eating me alive. Will a union take me with 0 electrical work experience? I have a stable career background, bachelor degree, and I’m very good with working with my hands.
From what I’ve gotten from others non of that matters tbh. Knowing how to use power tools (Meh) and being able to be teachable is all they are really looking for.
@@shane-pv6tl no way bud.. Google Florida IBEW, there are about 10 different locals throughout Florida. I have a union pipe fitter friend in Tampa makes about $44 an hour and another bud is a union lineman and makes $45 an hour. Just Google your local IBEW. Go make that cheddar bud. Good luck 👍🏽
Yeah I had a bud from NJ who was making $55 and back in 2005 he went to FL and signed the book and was making 20ish as a journeyman, FL unions are ass because the south has always been very Republican and thus very union busting and anti union and have no pull like that have up north, sorry man, if you don't make me traveling Pa, NY, NJ and MA are all high 30's to I think my local is 269 Trenton NJ is 53 and Foreman rate is 63

Didn’t you guys have to take an aptitude test to get into the apprenticeship? The way you are describing your story is that all you did was have the idea to join the apprenticeship program, apply for it and BAM! You got in. I recently applied for the JATC Electrician’s Apprenticeship program; got the “iPrep” course; clocked-in mad hours of study and module drills; getting 90% and better; and then on the day of my aptitude exam, I was blind sighted because three quarters of the questions were totally foreign to me! “iPrep” swore up and down that their test modules were an exact replica of the IBEW/JATC apprenticeship exam!
Hey, good question! Yes, we had the whole process: Application, aptitude test, and interview. My other videos go really in debt explaining the whole process and each individual step, but for the sake of this video we didn’t go very in depth with the whole application process. I’m really sorry to hear that you had that experience 😕 I know that most Locals give the same aptitude tests, but there are some that are different. Still, they should have prepared you if they promise to do so. What types of questions left you blind sighted? I have a video talking about the aptitude test and I strongly recommend using Khan Academy to prepare for the aptitude test in my video.
Hey bro. I bought the course too and the math did not prepare me at all, let alone even resemble the test. I scored below average on the algebra category. The reading actually helped me significantly, my reading score actually carried me and allowed for me to get into the interview phase 😭

Hey, right on! Really glad to hear that! If you get assigned to an employer at the end of basic skills class then you'll most likely start working the next week. For example, if you end class on a Friday then you'll most likely start working on a job site that following Monday. That's at least how it works here at Local 48.
I made more Money working in factories than when I started in the residential program in Washington DC. But I really had no electrical skills. Didn’t know an old work box from a 4 in square box. I got in the apprenticeship and after a year. I went from $4 to $16 in unless than 5 yrs. The scale in my home local is over $50 now plus benefits paid for by the contractors. I‘ll say it again: the benefits are paid for by the contractors. But I don’t care cause I am retired and planning to go to Europe for the third time this summer. The earlier you get in the better off you will be in retirement. Ask yourself what will you be doing when you are 65?
Thinking about being an electrician. Tried being a machinist but it was too messy for me. Chemicals and sludge everywhere, nasty shop. Also have trouble with my knees and back though. They’re a bit better now that I’m exercising but they still bother me a bit. Any advice?

@@MadElectrician thanks man I appreciate the love. 💪 But I gotta say that I had a call yesterday from the Apprenticeship to take the test on May 22nd bro I am really excited and surprised that I was able to get a call early as I took the application last month. Going to be studying hard ever since the past couple of weeks. Extremely motivated just as this channel that gave me the confidence and the motivation. I will let you know how it goes but I know I'm gonna pass this test😎

I Worked with Aaron on a bowling ally job. probably one of his first jobs ever. He was really good right out the gate. Learned quick and had a great attitude. Aaron, I still have the video of Jerry trying to get the lift out of that room.
I just got accepted into IBEW, Wa state just passed a law saying in order to obtain 01 you are REQUIRED to complete an apprenticeship program…..I just went through two years an received my associates in electrical and they’re not even recognizing that and STILL want me to go through 4 years of more school. It’s a big ponzy scheme if you ask me. This bill was supported by the union (of course) and passed because all the elected officials taking money from the union. It’s really going to become a shit show because your bottle necking the entire trade when you only have two facilities two train people and the waiting list is LONG
I was scared off from the unions when I saw good workers stuck in low positions because its all a good ol boy club and that they had to work excessive hours with very little time to see their families. I ended up with a private company, I have retirement and benefits and didn't have to join a cult
