Mexico is a beauracratic nightmare! Usually took me 5 visits to the INM office to get my yearly visa update. And they were extremely rude! Finally got my Permanente Residencia! Goodbye INM!!

I was married to my Mexican wife in 2021 I got my temporary residency in March of 2022 in Feburary of 2023 I had a family emergency in the US and I thought I would be back in time to renew it. But It took longer than expected and upon returning I realized that I completely forgot it. So I went to the INM offices in Polanco. They said I need to start the whole process from 0 which is not big deal it was my fault. But this time coming into the airport they now give different visas than the original ones. So I was told I need to scan the code and print out the visa. I arrived on December 4th 2023 and my visa said 180 days. Which speaking now expired May 31st. About a week ago I went to the offices and went through the whole process for them to tell me that the original visa and what I printed which is when I scanned the original had some differences and that they needed to send it to be verified. They kept my visas and told me that I would be notified via email…like I say about a week or two has went by and my NUT: still says no resolution. I just want to know what to expect I was told that I would have no problems because I started the process and that I am able to stay until notified but not sure

Really enjoy your positive demeanor. Can you explain the “proof of address”. I’m planning on this process, but we live in the United States. Wife’s family has addresses we can use until we get settled. Wife has printed her up to date Mexican birth certificate and renewed Mexican passport. In process of getting everything apostilled and translated Gracias

That’s awesome Lance! & thanks for the compliment; very kind of you. I appreciate it. As for the proof of address, it just needs to be a recent bill of sorts within the last 2-3 months-depending on the office. Every office is different and can be picky with what they will accept. For instance my office wouldn’t accept my recent CFE bill but it did accept our Internet bill, because it had more details of our address. You should be fine using your family’s address & bills (as it doesn’t need to be in your name); I would just gather a few different options from them, to be prepared in case your office prefers one proof of address over the other [i.e. water bill, CFE bill, internet/phone bill, etc.]. I hope that helps!

Was this at INM or the Mexican Consulate? Why did you have to apply for a visa if you were already in Mexico?
@pristinepersians

That's what I'm afraid of, residency issues. So, no family link means n permanent residency, ever? Can you do 4 years on the temporary, leave a year and go back?
@MixedinMexico
@MixedinMexico Год назад
Hi Pristine! I hope to publish a follow-up video soon! There is a happy ending to my story! I actually went through Mexico's version of the "IRS" [SAT] and received a full refund to my bank account; as well as approval for my temporary residency then went on to get my permanent residency a few weeks ago. If I did it, I'm sure you can do it too; no matter what route you take to get there! And I'm a bit puzzled on your inquiry; please let me know if this response answers your question: If you are a temporary resident of Mexico [for any amount of years] you are free to leave the country and return without an issue while your temporary residency card is still valid. & Starting from 30 days before your residency is due to expire, you are eligible to go in to the INM office for renewal. Try not to let it expire; otherwise it's adds a headache to renew; and after 4 years as a temporary resident, you qualify automatically for permanent residency in Mexico. I hope that helps!

Even though the process in Mexico can sometimes be a bit of a hassle, it is nothing compared to what Mexicans have to go through to get US citizenship! My husband and I got our temporary residency in Mexico in 2022 by presenting our financials to the Mexican consulate in the US (with an appointment) and finishing up in Mexico. We have since renewed it for 3 years, and at the end of that we will be permanent residents. Most of it is easy to do on your own, even without speaking Spanish, but we did get someone to help us to do the 3 year renewal, mostly because they could get an appointment and expedite it.

Why didn't you get an immigration attorney to assist you?
@dennishassler605
@dennishassler605 Год назад
Certainly helps to have patience and a positive attitude - I can see so many people would be very uncomfortable going through all this. You are a good model for how to approach the task and to deal effectively with the bureaucracy. Having your interpreter as a wise move, but most expats are well advised to have an attorney assist in the process.

We hired a lawyer to look after our application by family unity. Damn good thing. We were in the line then out of the line then back in and back out. All the paperwork that ended up being possibly needed has to be in hand and some we weren’t certain of so better to start over with the possible paperwork. They acted as lawyer, interpreter, juggler and cheearleader at various points throughout the day. But at least it was only the one day. We walked out with permanent resident cards in hand. Doing that alone and not with fluent Spanish would be harrowing at best.

i was denied my permanent residency for a trivial reason; i supposedly showed my US passport in tijuana to board a flight instead of my temporary residency; just for this... i had to start the temporary residency process over again from scratch. My mexican wife's US green card application was much easier compared to this mexican chaos.
@MixedinMexico
@MixedinMexico 7 месяцев назад
Sorry for your troubles @rocambole93 I can only imagine your frustrations. They can be quite picky about certain things. I now always go out of my way to find an INM office in the airport before boarding any Mexican flight; to ensure I check in/out as a resident before exiting the country. Hopefully the process to re-acquire your residency won't be too difficult. Feel free to reach out with any questions, if you have any along the way. We're rooting for you!
@danahumphrey5044

Your comment is confusing. The way I understand it is that you must have gone through the wrong immigration line when you entered. There is a line for Mexican citizens and residents, that is where you would show your residency card. Then there's another line for all citizens of any other country. You must have gone through the wrong line and that's why your residency was canceled out. You must have gotten a tourist visa (FMM) issued by doing that.

My wife is a Mexican citizen. I am going to apply for the temporary resident visa within in Mexico at the INM. I've asked different people and some say the Vinculo Familiar and some say the other one. I'm worried about making the same mistake!
@MixedinMexico
@MixedinMexico Год назад
My advice would be to double/triple check with the INM office you'll be going to ahead of time; as they provided me with the most assistance in selecting the correct application. I also completed my application at a time before they had credit card terminals in the INM offices, so if you bring a Visa or Mastercard with you to your appointment (versus paying ahead of time), it may alleviate some of the fear of paying for the wrong application. I hope that helps!

In Mexico you line up, to go on a line. I had my canje at Guadalajara and arrived at 05.00am waited on a line outside the building, then after 8.00am you are allowed to go on a line outside the office inside the building, then at 09.00am then let us in, to go on another line to talk to someone at the counter. They asked if I had an appointment, which I did not so was given a date to go back. So wasted my day. Finally I had my meeting and was given my PR card in 6 hrs.
@MixedinMexico
@MixedinMexico Год назад
That sounds like quite the experience!! I can absolutely relate. I'm glad you were able to get your PR card after all of that! Your hard work, patience and perseverance definitely paid off. I hope you're enjoying Mexico to the full now and de-stressing from that experience. I'm sure your story will prove encouraging to others with a similar goal!
