To curb anything from happening like this (the dissemnation of erroneous scriptures), the Ottomans prohibited the use of printing press for quite a while as they didn't want the scriptures of the Quran to be tampered with. At that time the Quran was written by hand. Ottomans couldn't compete with the colonial west, as they no longer were able to tax the western countries for requiring a pathway into Asia. Ottomans couldn't get out the Mediterranean blockade to commission westward ventures. European renaissance was funded by the colonial riches. It all boiled down to money and superior ammunition. The US Arizona has money, the Mexican side simple doesn't. I have read both of these books, Why Nations Fail, has tons of cherry picking in it, certain specific cases to suit the author's objective. Presently, democracy has taken serious hits and is on the decline in my opinion, the illusory gamut of free speech practiced in the west is slowly unraveling, people are somewhat tricked into thinking that their voice matters, had that really mattered, Iraq and Afghanistan would have been a different story. The Chinese model has somewhat rejuvenated interest in a coherently driven authoritarian government. Authoritarian changes and reforms have worked better for them, those changes may not have been possible in a democratic setup. They have given people, jobs, education, health, better social life rather than the right to vote. I would trade my right to vote over basic amenities of life any day. Samuel P Huntington for me is gonna win in the longer run. Fukuyama's End of History is a thing of the past now. One size doesn't fit all.
