They completely missed the opportunity to use Y2K fashion which was (and still is) trending at the time, there has never been a better time to actually go crazy with the outfits and do them justice to the cartoon. What made Winx interesting was 1- the girls friendship 2- The fashion 3- The cool futuristic weapons the men had because they don't have powers 4- The plot about Bloom and her lost sister, Bloom trying to find out who she is and who her sister is. NONE of those things were in the show, NONE!!!

The way Dylan was able to write the Winx storyline better than the actual writers by having Bloom go into an uncontrollable power trance and the girls needing to converge their abilities to defend themselves while Musa, the mind fairy, is the one who ultimately reaches her, and then that's what leads to them all becoming friends. The target audience being female doesn't mean action isn't needed and useless romance is justified. Nothing will make me drop a show faster than pointless relationships between any man and woman who breathe the same direction. I understand my view isn't how all women think, but the opposite is also true. There's not one standard all women would agree with. But I think what we all would agree on is that ''women love romance and hate spectacle'' is a tired stereotype that needs to go.

As someone who grew up on Winx Club, this show made me SO MAD. They literally took all the good things away and brought nothing.
@CourtneyMaria2
@CourtneyMaria2 Год назад
I loved in the original show that they broke down stereotypes. Like Stella is a spoiled princess but she’s a good person (and one of the reasons I love her character). She will always be there for the people she loves and cares about. And also I feel like most of them act like actual teenagers (not all the time but they live in a world of magic and this is from my memory). But from what I’ve heard and clips I’ve seen from the Netflix show, they are just all stereotypes (which there’s nothing wrong with that because the original show they use these stereotypes to make interesting characters). I also don’t like how Hollywood thinks mature is a movie being visually dark, but the original show had some pretty dark moments but was still a colourful show.

@@CourtneyMaria2 And bloom and Stella would die for each other. Stella literally lied and tried to sneak Bloom into Alfea. They always stood up for each other. Hearing you discuss the problem with the specialists being trained with normal swords and weapons made me so mad at the show, because it reminded me that one of the main appeals of Winx was its technology. They had the coolest and most innovative weapon designs back then, adapting to each specialist fighting style, even their school (which was different from the Winx's one) and transportation was made to be futuristic. Winx was very technology-influenced and that was one of the things that set it apart from other fairy stories, yet they went ahead with their dark-academia and forest life thing that has been done a million times.

Right? Us women folk want great fight sequences too. It’s not a sex/gendered thing - it’s a people with good taste thing. Most people want good fight/battle sequences because it’s simply enjoying something created skilfully: like appreciating a beautifully cooked meal; or the architecture of a castle. Fucking hell liking battle scenes are not a male only thing, nor should they be created only with a male audience in mind. Just because the movie or tv show you’re creating is mostly targeted at a female teen audience does not mean you should slack off in that department. It also makes the writing and the characterisations look weaker when fight scenes are not well choreographed. I do wish more blokes would realize that us chicks like this stuff too. Because I mean… it’s having taste. It’s not like only women have taste buds and therefore like cake you know? It’s not like only men have eyes and therefore can appreciate landscaping.

The thing is, the original show was DARK. We LITERALLY have the trix turn people into ash and attack the schools with an army of decaying flesh and rot like? Why didn’t y’all just go with that? Or focus more on the inter realms war with the ancient ones? Hell, Fate couldve been set in the past with Daphne and tell her story that ends with her death instead we got a basic try hard grim dark series that had zero budget. Also, Terra is Flora and no matter HOW MUCH fans try to deny it Terra is Flora. This season I’m gonna need Musa to reveal she stole someone else’s identity and she’s actually Darcy, Beatrix takes on the name Stormy, Terra transfers and Flora takes her place and Sam and Dane get demoted to recurring characters. I want my ACTUAL Winx characters.

bro the fact that they were scared to basically stick to the original material in some sense is annoying. The cartoon had fashion, friendship, love, and battles a show targeted toward girls that ended up with a very successful saga. because girls love battles too just add in some so great clothes and were set. the show was colorful and sparkly even in the serious scene but somehow kept the mood. Maybe I have horrible taste in tv shows but I found it enjoyable to watch, if it’s a remake or reboot idc if it stays to the original source material it just needs to have some elements of the original with their own plot line and then have a good vision with good writing. Fate, I understand did mess up on a lot of things but as the target demographic which I honestly regret being ngl, I enjoyed it. Now for season 2 the creator did say after seeing the first season he will be joining for the second season and fixing all the problems he saw I think, can’t remember clearly, and Flora is coming plus she’s Latina so you know going to watch it and see if it’s going to live up to the potential that I saw.

I personally think SOC is darker and grittier than Peaky Blinders, which is the closest show I can even think of that matches the vibe of SOC. Kaz is very similar to Thomas Shelby, even looks like a younger version of him, in my head and in the show. There were points while reading the duology that I had to stop and double check the age rating for SOC, not because that is something that applies to me, but simply because I could not believe that a book this gruesome and dark wasn't rated 18+. Like the Hunger Games, if they included everything from the books into the show, it would probably have to be aired on HBO. The best yet shortest book series I have ever read.

Not to mention they took out Techna, changed Musa, and swapped out Flora - making any Winx connection practically unrecognizable. Techna’s powers actually wouldn’t have been too hard to adapt to a live action setting - just have it be similar to telepathy but using technology or the internet as a channel (akin to the Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, or Fringe to name a few examples). Kingdom Hearts 2 (a video game) was able to make that magic-tech combination pretty seamless with a data disc for Tron created by Cid and Merlin! It’s a shame because apparently a live action Winx adaptation has been the original creator’s dream for a long time.

One of the things that really annoys me about The Winx Saga is that they didn’t have to go for the Riverdale vibe to make the show darker. The source content has full on battles, an entire planet was killed, the girls were literally fighting for their lives every other episode. The only thing they needed to do was actually have a person die every now and then or actually show injuries in the show and add in some swear words to make it less kid friendly. The source material had some really dark plot lines to go with, it was right there and the creators of the The Winx Saga totally ignored it. Another thing was the fashion in the show. They were dressing like house wives on a reality show. This show could’ve been like Gossip Girl where trends were inspired by the show and there could’ve been some really cool moments. It was the perfect show to let creativity with fashion fly. A lot of people would’ve flocked to the show had the clothing been a lot better simply because there’s a lot of people that love fashion but all of the looks they actually used were either boring or ugly or both. There’s other things that bother me about the show like dropping some main characters, changing the ethnicities of some of the girls, and the lack of friendship which was super important in the show. It was an all around mess of a show.

The coloring crossover/mixup in episode 3 of S&B actually makes sense with some context! Nina (known here fondly as Beatrice) is a character established in Six of Crows (warm tones), but she is native to the country the main character is in with the shadow fold (neutral tones) and is also Grisha (has powers, would be in the same part of the army as mc if she wasn’t currently……on a lil detour from her duty we’ll say lmao.) In the show storyline she was also meant to be the (six) crows’ ~connection~ to get them into the little palace aka Darkle’s Castle aka land au neutral so her character intro literally represented one side venturing into the other! Not sure if needing all of that context to understand it makes it incredibly dense or incredibly clever but as someone who read the books it felt clever lol. The directors may change every 2 episodes, but they definitely put in work together to try and keep that cohesive visual story going!!

Versus some director coming into a project that's already established, not to mention TV execs make the decisions and don't know anything about good TV. OG Bloom has fire powers but she never knew she had them until she accidentally meets Stella. Stella is the blonde. She’s also a princess who’s powers are light. Musa’s powers are music. Flora is the nature fairy. Techno is the technology fairy. Girls can have powers but the guys can’t. When Dylan was wondering why the guys are training with swords, it’s because boys don’t have magic. AND, Alfea (Winx school) and Redfountain (Specialists’/boys’ school) are different. All the characters just got assassinated terribly Bloom went from the kind cinnamon roll hot head that was trying to figure out who she was to edgy mean overpowered generic main protagonist girl. Also Bloom's color is blue which worked so well with her red hair but the writers couldn't even see that and threw red on her. Stella went from fashion diva who was kindhearted yet also dealing with divorced parents and being Bloom's bsf to generic mean girl put in a love triangle. Aisha doesn't even have a personality except being a babysitter for Bloom's shit. The romance also pisses me off. Netflix used to have everything, and there was so much hype for every show they created. Now they took a lot of really good shows off and replaced it with horrible original shows that are just not really good. There are only a handful of things on Netflix I’d like to see, and it is SOOO expensive. They release seasons all at once and have no ads, so that’s good, but they don’t have a monopoly over the industry anymore. There are more streaming services offering similar styles and more benefits for a fraction of the price. I can get hulu, Disney plus, & hbo for under the price of a Netflix subscription and still have some to spare. I’m just not sure if it’s worth it anymore.

Netflix had the benefit of being the leader of streaming and they even had the foresight to start creating their own original programming. But they royally fu*ked up by canceling too many of their fan favorite series. And honestly I think it’s a bad thing that they release their seasons all at once. This prevents shows from being in the spotlight with weekly new episodes up to 2 to 3 months like Apple TV+ and Hulu, instead they drop a season and people consume it over a weekend then you don’t hear about it for another year. They still have a huge advantage and I’m not counting them as down and out by any means, but they need to make serious changes FAST if they don’t want to get swallowed by the competition.

I didn't know the prices were so different from country to country. Where I live the prices are as follows: Netflix = Hulu = HBO+Prime ; and Disney+ is in between, cheaper than Netflix but more expensive than HBO. It's common for people to buy the "family" packages and share with friends/family members who live in different houses, so it gets really cheap. To put things in perspective, a month of Netflix costs about the same as 13kg of rice, or 2 McDonalds meals, so even though it's one of the most expensive it's still quite cheap.

I really loved S&B as well. But honestly, I was more interested in the Six of Crows storyline. I read the Six of Crows after watching the show, and I gotta say, mixing the S&B storyline with SOC was a mistake. SOC was like reading a book version of Peaky Blinders, except its better than Peaky Blinders and darker in many ways. S&B by comparison feels like a Disney Channel Original movie. They clearly have and will continue to water down the grittiness that is SOC. They already solved Inej's indenturement issue without even getting into what the Managerie really is and what she had to do for Heleen. There is also no mention of Per Haskell so far, which means Netflix will likely gloss over what could be the best (non DC/ Marvel universe) fight scene in the last decade. The casting for SOC was spot on in my opinion though, and all the SOC characters' personalities are still intact despite show Kaz, Inej, and Jes being softer than in the books. I don't blame the softness on Freddy, Amita, or Kit though. This was a writing choice on Netflix's part, to make the characters less jarring when paired side-by-side with the S&B Disney characters.

@@rationalcynic8416, I don't think they'll do that in the second season. This was just to establish the crows, but all the ugly and gruesome details will be saved for the second season. There are still a lot of characters in the SOC universe that are not introduced because it's not their time yet. Some people say they might split the two books into two shows now that it has been established. However, mixing SOC and S&B together was a smart move. SOC is more widely known than S&B, and better liked. Had S&B been released as a stand-alone show, the ratings wouldn't have been as high, and we might've never had the chance to actually see the crows. And we need to show the S&B world to know what the hell is going on so we can't just skip to SOC. Many people who didn't read S&B and skipped to SOC were so confused because the world is so complex and was not yet established to them and the language. If they leave out all those gory moments, people aren't going to be happy, and I don't think Leigh will let that happen. She knows what made SOC so popular, and it was because of its dark moments.

I have nothing against female media creators, female characters getting focus and so on. My issue is how targeted audiences as a whole often times becomes an excuse for agendas & the active ostracizing of other potential audiences. Female targeted media can be great, as long as first & foremost it’s a good piece of media. Female characters getting focus can be great, as long as the characters & their story are good themselves. And I’ll point out it’s exactly the same for any other form of media or targeted audience. Nothing is inherently bad simply by being a genre or category. Almost anything has the potential to work as long as someone makes it good. Which by extension allows the audience gained to reach beyond the target. Giving everyone something to enjoy & love. Which in the case of female media allows it to have the same well deserved notoriety & praise as anything else.

I don't think the problem is that female-targeted media being looked down upon so much as it's the people who create it looking down on women. If people who respect women are running the project, they tend to do things like allow the female characters to have flaws and motives that do not solely revolve around their romantic interest; they fail and struggle in their journey to reach their goals. The creators respect their audience's ability to accept that women are just as flawed as anyone else.

I tried shadow and bone. Was hyped about it at first until the guy wizard kidnapped the main girl and held her in his castle against her will and I was like whelp, I'm done. I don't have any patience with stories that are ok with portraying women are things to do with as they wish.

I think the lighting/colors/hues had more to do with the setting and not the characters. The crows were in Ketterdam the first few episodes but they then travel to Ravka (which is why the hues changed)...at least that's my guess

No that's true. Nina was in Ravka and not Ketterdam when she gets caught by the Druskeles, atleast in the show. In the books she was in Fjerda with Zoya and her peers for a mission and gets caught by Matthias and team.

I thought that maybe the change in color had something more to do with Nina later on (in CK) kinda being the connection between the Second Army, Zoya, the Ravkan king etc. and the crows on the other side, as she is the *only* trained Grisha amongst them and a former soldier.

genuinely netflix has produced some really good shows but all of them had passion from behind the scenes with the authors either being hands-on (shadow and bone, heartstopper, etc) or they had extremely good directors (She-re, sex ed, etc) and it makes me sad that they spread themselves so thin, trying to make a million different things when they could focus on things people actually care about :/ if your crew doesn't care about the show, neither will we.

Fate the winx saga is an insult to Winx! They wanted something more edgy as if there was no edge in the original. Spoilers!!! Tecna sacrificed herself for her friends, Aisha lost her sight to save her home planet, Nabu died!! They also whitewashed characters and erased the only neurodivergent character! The love stories where also interesting! You wanted edgy, put actual Musa and Raven together, nothing more toxic and edgy. I could go on and on, but I'll stop there. Edit: Also transformations!!! Battles!!!! Fashion!!!! Everything is bleak!

I never read Shadow and Bone (only six of crows) so I went in blind. In the first ep the mc goes into the fold with a crew on a ship which gets attacked by the monsters and it was shot AMAZINGLY. It was filled with so much tension. The camera was very dynamic like Dylan said so it moved around and followed the mc and those that got killed and it made the scene so much more terrifying and cool than if they shot it like a typical action scene. Those small things really change a show from okay to great

Sad part of all of this is that the Winx had a good balance of dark and light elements. The dark elements were to tell the story, especially about Bloom and her internal struggles of identity and loss while the lighter elements were to be fillers or relief. The thing is though even while it was light we immediately had dark elements, people.dying or being betrayed or secrets revealed to make sure the audience knows that the story is still taking place. The show has as much fighting as much as they do shopping, friendship and relationships. I love dark shows but nowadays everyone wants to be dark but not tell a actual story, 6 episodes of nothing.

I realize that you can’t make a ””grounded”” live action series if it mimicks a fairy cartoon down to a T, but….netflix really slaughtered the source material. Other than the names of the characters, this show reminded me nothing of the very cartoon it is based which I loved as a kid. So thank you, I hadn’t been as upset over a show in a long while as I was with this one 😅

"Slaughtered the source material" is the PERFECT way to describe what Netflix did to Winx. Not everything needs to be a Riverdale ripoff, but Netflix tried its hardest 🙄 not only that but the animation was weak, the storyline sucked, I despised how they made the girls hate each other (even tho the Winx were all besties by the end of the first episode in the OG series), they got rid of some of the diversity in the show, and just I could go on, but I'm preaching to choir 😅

They didn't willingly remove their anchor shows (Friends, The Office, etc). They lost them. The licenses' expired and the owners found better deals elsewhere. In the case of The Office, NBC needed it to lure people over to Peacock. The reason behind creating their own content is to prevent it from continuing to happen.
@Ha-fg5xg
@Ha-fg5xg 2 года назад
Exactly what I was going to say! Plus with all the new streaming services like HBO, Disneyplus, Peacock as you mentioned, I think its getting harder for Netflix to acquire the "popular" titles at the moment so they're kind of forced to bring in all these shows that aren't necessarily good.

@TheNightxSky
@TheNightxSky 2 года назад
@@feli3051 Unfortunatly, Netflix has the mindset that people won't watch shows that are longer than five seasons. So at five seasons or close to that they cancel them. Don't expect any netflix original show to surpass that. If they cancel the show before five seasons, most likely means the show didn't do well overall and it wasn't worth continueing. Got to remember that even if a show is bad it might still get a lot of views, like the reality stuff, people love reality tv. The show might be good, but if it only has a niche following than overall it's not worth to continue.
