And then they cancel the incredible shows but let the terrible ones have another season. It happens way too often

They completely missed the opportunity to use Y2K fashion which was (and still is) trending at the time, there has never been a better time to actually go crazy with the outfits and do them justice to the cartoon. I'm just imagining the amazing outfits we could have seen, it could have been a trendsetter like Euphoria honestly. Though no good outfit could have saved that show.

It was really fun in my opinion i assume the books are obviously better but it was a lot of fun too watch frankly I burst out laughing like 5 times cause the characters were so dumb.

Yes, like, I’m not okay with this and Society. I have no idea what they have done with Black Mirror, it was so popular and good but I guess they ran out of ideas. Édit: Good shows if they do come back sometimes take 2 years or more, why? Like I understand there was Covid but there was a few that came out way before and never got an additional season until 2-3 years later.

@@KristySki Why not both? Good romance can root a show's foundation. Take Berserk for example. An action anime, relying mostly on that, but the romance between Guts and Casca is what adds depth.

I loved in the original show that they broke down stereotypes. Like Stella is a spoiled princess but she’s a good person (and one of the reasons I love her character). She will always be there for the people she loves and cares about. And also I feel like most of them act like actual teenagers (not all the time but they live in a world of magic and this is from my memory). But from what I’ve heard and clips I’ve seen from the Netflix show, they are just all stereotypes (which there’s nothing wrong with that because the original show they use these stereotypes to make interesting characters). I also don’t like how Hollywood thinks mature is a movie being visually dark, but the original show had some pretty dark moments but was still a colourful show.

The group too would go through anything for each other. They never needed the boys to save them and the boys knew the girls could hold their own. Heck, stella even saved Brandom from the one underground princess who forcefully wanted to marry him. The friendship was the core and netflix just murdered the show then jerked off on its corpse

Same! I am also so angry what they did to the original characters. Like for example they made "stella" actually mean and only had floras cousin?? (i loved flora so much as a child). I dropped the show after one episode.

I was pretty excited for the show and then I heard about Netflix's adaption and then what actually happened, I could not believe it (I mean I could because it's Netflix but still).

I loved the original and the Netflix show. But I was so mad when they waited till the last episode of season 2 for the Winx to get their wings. And then Netflix just cancelled it. And on a huge cliffhanger too.

As soon as he said that Not Winx Club was geared towards women, that's an insult 😡. It's like having action scenes in a 'woman's' show is too 'masculine' 🙃. I get that most women are not into action stuff but some of us do appreciate it 😎

Right? Us women folk want great fight sequences too. It’s not a sex/gendered thing - it’s a people with good taste thing. Most people want good fight/battle sequences because it’s simply enjoying something created skilfully: like appreciating a beautifully cooked meal; or the architecture of a castle. Fucking hell liking battle scenes are not a male only thing, nor should they be created only with a male audience in mind. Just because the movie or tv show you’re creating is mostly targeted at a female teen audience does not mean you should slack off in that department. It also makes the writing and the characterisations look weaker when fight scenes are not well choreographed. I do wish more blokes would realize that us chicks like this stuff too. Because I mean… it’s having taste. It’s not like only women have taste buds and therefore like cake you know? It’s not like only men have eyes and therefore can appreciate landscaping.

@@19Rena96 Throughout the episodes I somehow forgot that it is supposed to be WINX because it was so not winx-like. It was okay-ish and I wanna watch the second season. But they should have just made a different series and not a Winx series that basically has nothing to do with Winx. Cause that just sucks.

Overall I liked the show, clearly not a lot because I didn’t argue with anything Dylan said about it but there was SO MUCH POTENTIAL THEY THREW AWAY. And for some reason it cheesed me that she wasn’t the only fire fairy, I mean the whole thing is her having the dragon flame- In traditional Winx style you couldn’t cast fire spells if you didn’t have it so whatever they’re planning is definitely changing everything

The thing is, the original show was DARK. We LITERALLY have the trix turn people into ash and attack the schools with an army of decaying flesh and rot like? Why didn’t y’all just go with that? Or focus more on the inter realms war with the ancient ones? Hell, Fate couldve been set in the past with Daphne and tell her story that ends with her death instead we got a basic try hard grim dark series that had zero budget. Also, Terra is Flora and no matter HOW MUCH fans try to deny it Terra is Flora. This season I’m gonna need Musa to reveal she stole someone else’s identity and she’s actually Darcy, Beatrix takes on the name Stormy, Terra transfers and Flora takes her place and Sam and Dane get demoted to recurring characters. I want my ACTUAL Winx characters.

I'm sure they just used a script/concept for a original show and then edited the names so that they could market it as a Winx Club adaptation. There's just no way anyone familiar with the source material would've written this show.

Thing is, a lot of shows become more popular after they've been out for a while but Netflix wants things to be instant hits and that's just not realistic for the amount of shows they put out. People only have so much time. They can't watch every show at once.

I've found maybe 6 shows that like 3 finished but wasn't cancelled and two that are still on Netflix The Upshaws and Cobra Kai

To put things in prospective, AWAE got cancelled before Covid. That's 3 years ago, and people still cry about it on the internet. That just goes to show, Netflix hasn't had anything come out that's good enough to overcome the loss.

Maybe I have horrible taste in tv shows but I found it enjoyable to watch, if it’s a remake or reboot idc if it stays to the original source material it just needs to have some elements of the original with their own plot line and then have a good vision with good writing. Fate, I understand did mess up on a lot of things but as the target demographic which I honestly regret being ngl, I enjoyed it. Now for season 2 the creator did say after seeing the first season he will be joining for the second season and fixing all the problems he saw I think, can’t remember clearly, and Flora is coming plus she’s Latina so you know going to watch it and see if it’s going to live up to the potential that I saw.

Exactly! And my thing is this: in the show, the girls were best friends through everything since day one. Stella wasn't a bitch, all of them had they're unique powers, and though they had their disagreements, they were still together. There was no insider drama or anything. This crap show didn't even bother to have all of the original characters or give them their original powers. Musa is supposed to have musical powers, not sense emotion. They botched this show, it was my childhood and I will forever hold hate in my heart for it every time I see it! Sorry for my rant.

It deviated from the books in all the right places. Like, the books never once give a full description of Alina (only that she has brown hair and a pallor complextion because she's sick from not using her powers), i think Bardugo left her intentionally as a blank slate so readers could imagine themselves as Alina. The netflix writers and casting making her Shu Han and having her struggle with discrimination added an extra layer to the character that was clearly lacking in the books

I've never read the book but I watched the series and it was amazing. Soo goodd. I wasn't into fantasy genre but this series was too good to drop. The characters were all so interesting and I love the "game of throny' change of povs to different characters. Is the book worth it to read?

I personally think SOC is darker and grittier than Peaky Blinders, which is the closest show I can even think of that matches the vibe of SOC. Kaz is very similar to Thomas Shelby, even looks like a younger version of him, in my head and in the show. There were points while reading the duology that I had to stop and double check the age rating for SOC, not because that is something that applies to me, but simply because I could not believe that a book this gruesome and dark wasn't rated 18+. Like the Hunger Games, if they included everything from the books into the show, it would probably have to be aired on HBO. The best yet shortest book series I have ever read.

Let's be real here they were adapting a cartoon to a live action i feel like if they made it too much like the original it would have be to predictable, I like this version. I loved the cartoon as a kid, however I'm much older now and something like this with a more dark tone speaks to me. And yes maybe they could have done more with the costumes as they were soo good in the animation but it would have been so cringe if they did the whole chant and transform thing. Back then yeah, I don't think so now

Not to mention they took out Techna, changed Musa, and swapped out Flora - making any Winx connection practically unrecognizable. Techna’s powers actually wouldn’t have been too hard to adapt to a live action setting - just have it be similar to telepathy but using technology or the internet as a channel (akin to the Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, or Fringe to name a few examples). Kingdom Hearts 2 (a video game) was able to make that magic-tech combination pretty seamless with a data disc for Tron created by Cid and Merlin! It’s a shame because apparently a live action Winx adaptation has been the original creator’s dream for a long time.

I binged the whole season yesterday and for the first time EVER skipped back to watch all the cute and funny scenes again. Everything about it was honest and really well made 😍

I think what makes this true is that you have someone that is really passionate about the project driving it forward. The content is the writer's baby, so they won't settle for less. Versus some director coming into a project that's already established, not to mention TV execs make the decisions and don't know anything about good TV. They have a product they know people will consume, why not do it on a lower budget? Who cares who directs it if the content is what draws people in? We'll make money regardless.

Groundbreaking." anyway i digressed. what i mean is fine, take out the bedazzled fairy costumes, but maybe. just maybe. still keep to their original outfit motifs and, idk, be _interesting???_ ngl the fact that they kept out the fairy costumes but still had to give Bloom her "transformation" sequence that amounted nothing more to swirling flames and flame wings is. so. funny in hindsight. all that build-up and for nothing?? it could've actually been kinda epic if the flame wings erupted from her back from a sudden, instinctive power awakening and power boost, and idk, MORE FLAMES. fucking ring of fire, i don't mind. the visuals could've still been epic without the original aesthetic but they didn't even tryyyyy.

Yeah same, didn't know about the series until I accidentally stumbled upon it while googling the books... The Netflix algorithm is super weird anyways, if you look for recently added stuff it oftenly doesn't show you everything new, many good movies or series you can't find unless you know what you are looking for beforehand.

Honestly I think they’re just very strategic. If you look at Bridgerton and Ebola Holmes they marketed the shit out of them so they know when to do it. Maybe they just don’t want to tire their audience. Also for shadow and bone specific the reader demographic was YA and very tapped in so I think they knew they could rely on them. Same with heartstopper. Young and niche/fan audiences will almost do the marketing for them

Honestly there are few series/movies I can think of where the level of action put off/drove away female audiences, and it is mainly franchises with little to no storyline (like A team, the merchenaries and F&F). If anything shows with a female target are like-so because of a lack of interest from the male counterpart rather than a preference from women of certain genres

@@checksanity Im not talking about the second season? as it stands shadow and bone is not talked about much at all apart from the core fandom, it never really achieved mainstream popularity nor did attract discussion on social media. im hoping it'll gain recognition as season 2 comes though :D

@@samgrey2407 Most likely because the fandom didn't talk about it enough, and netflix didn't advertise the show. The only way someone would have known about it is through hersay or it being shown on the newsfeed on netflix and that in itself is not a garauntee that it gets watched. If the show's fandom started to make a bunch of memes and start talking about it than it probably would recieve more interest.

It was trending at number 1 for quite a while tho.

@@recoveringintrovert717 lol, don’t worry it’ll make sense when we get to the Six of Crows part of the storyline/Show. It’s just a little hint shown before that. Fun fact, the producer signed up to adapt the Six Of Crows story (cause he was a huge fan of that plot, but he got Shadow and Bone’s trilogy) so he made it so that the Six of Crows characters are also in the Shadow and Bone as a prequel (since they are both set in the Grisha verse and the events of Six of Crows in the books come after Shadow and Bone)

Netflix had the benefit of being the leader of streaming and they even had the foresight to start creating their own original programming. But they royally fu*ked up by canceling too many of their fan favorite series. And honestly I think it’s a bad thing that they release their seasons all at once. This prevents shows from being in the spotlight with weekly new episodes up to 2 to 3 months like Apple TV+ and Hulu, instead they drop a season and people consume it over a weekend then you don’t hear about it for another year. They still have a huge advantage and I’m not counting them as down and out by any means, but they need to make serious changes FAST if they don’t want to get swallowed by the competition.

If I had my own netflix I would have cancelled it long ago. They just cancelled one too many good shows and made on too many reality shows. Also they keep renewing shows that used to be good and make crappie new seasons that everyone hates. It just isn't worth it anymore.

Releasing the entire season all at once is actually a terrible thing for netflix. They hardly market their work and could benefit so much from weekly fan made contet, discussions and word of mouth

@@feli3051 What show’s are you referring to that are getting renewed but it’s getting worse? When you say “reality” tv, do you mean any show that isn’t fictional? As in lumping are you lumping the baking, cooking, dating, true crime, real estate, and travel shows together?

I didn't know the prices were so different from country to country. Where I live the prices are as follows: Netflix = Hulu = HBO+Prime ; and Disney+ is in between, cheaper than Netflix but more expensive than HBO. It's common for people to buy the "family" packages and share with friends/family members who live in different houses, so it gets really cheap. To put things in perspective, a month of Netflix costs about the same as 13kg of rice, or 2 McDonalds meals, so even though it's one of the most expensive it's still quite cheap.

Sorry I’m not caught up in the book world…do you have to read shadow and bone with it or is it it’s own thing?

@@Nuuhnn_ya you don't really have to read shadow and bone since it's a completely different storyline just set in the same universe, but it's really confusing to read alone because the world building was already done in shadow and bone, and you don't really enjoy it as much as you could've if you've read them, so I definitely recommend reading those first:) Also, it spoils the end of ruin and rising (the third book in the shadow and bone trilogy).

I read SoC first and the first chapter was a lil confusing I was like WHAT IS HAPPENING but then the CROWS came and OMGGGG I AM OBESSED WITH THAT SERIES I wanted to read Shadow and Bone but after Reading SoC it's kind of difficult because my expectations are soo high and I know I am gonna be disappointed

@@sariica yes, and in this instance it means when in the original source material certain characters were poc but when the new show was made they cast white actors for those roles that were supposed to be poc. this in turn takes away jobs from minority actors. (i am not blaming the actors, but the casting directors and those in charge of making those decisions).

Right? I really felt the seductive pull into his "side" of opulence and celebrity that the main character must have felt. She went from starving and dirty to parties and fame and a hot and powerful famous dude as a potential romantic/battle partner. It all sounds so enticing... till you find out who he really is, then it all comes crashing down.

I really loved S&B as well. But honestly, I was more interested in the Six of Crows storyline. I read the Six of Crows after watching the show, and I gotta say, mixing the S&B storyline with SOC was a mistake. SOC was like reading a book version of Peaky Blinders, except its better than Peaky Blinders and darker in many ways. S&B by comparison feels like a Disney Channel Original movie. They clearly have and will continue to water down the grittiness that is SOC. They already solved Inej's indenturement issue without even getting into what the Managerie really is and what she had to do for Heleen. There is also no mention of Per Haskell so far, which means Netflix will likely gloss over what could be the best (non DC/ Marvel universe) fight scene in the last decade. The casting for SOC was spot on in my opinion though, and all the SOC characters' personalities are still intact despite show Kaz, Inej, and Jes being softer than in the books. I don't blame the softness on Freddy, Amita, or Kit though. This was a writing choice on Netflix's part, to make the characters less jarring when paired side-by-side with the S&B Disney characters.

@@rationalcynic8416, I don't think they'll do that in the second season. This was just to establish the crows, but all the ugly and gruesome details will be saved for the second season. There are still a lot of characters in the SOC universe that are not introduced because it's not their time yet. Some people say they might split the two books into two shows now that it has been established. However, mixing SOC and S&B together was a smart move. SOC is more widely known than S&B, and better liked. Had S&B been released as a stand-alone show, the ratings wouldn't have been as high, and we might've never had the chance to actually see the crows. And we need to show the S&B world to know what the hell is going on so we can't just skip to SOC. Many people who didn't read S&B and skipped to SOC were so confused because the world is so complex and was not yet established to them and the language. If they leave out all those gory moments, people aren't going to be happy, and I don't think Leigh will let that happen. She knows what made SOC so popular, and it was because of its dark moments.

I never read the books for shadow and bones ( only six of crows) because I wanted to be surprise!! I do here comparisons between the books and the show which always have me like 😮 lol!! So it’s interesting to hear people talk about how it’s different!!

@Day Yeah I know, I just think it is even funnier that he was called the darkling from the start. I mean who could've guessed that someone named the darkling, who has direct connections to the main source of conflict and is practicing what would be this worlds equivalent of dark magic (literally haha) is the villain? Not me that's for sure.

I didn't understand why they made that change either. It had no significant impact (I guess they tried with another route of him trying to manipulate alina into feeling more welcomed by sharing his name earlier) but the fact they just erased his title and had other characters use it as random didn't sit well with me. He isn't just any normal guy, he THE only shadow summoner they know therefore using his name is kind of ... weird? idk, I'm not a fan of the darling but I liked how at the end of the third book we were reminded that behind that evil character there was still a real human who was more than his title.

Obviously a TV adaptation will change things, sometimes to fit the new format better and sometimes to improve something and that's okay, but I absolutely hate it when they change things for no apparent reason. If they wanted alina to feel more welcome and closer to him they could've had her using whatever name he goes by at the time and everyone else call him the darling, no need to waste his real name for a throwaway scene.

Of course media targeted at women isn't inherently bad. It's just largely shoddy and contrived, whilst having a few solid elements.; the worse elements being more visible when put to a new medium and pushed under an agenda.

I have nothing against female media creators, female characters getting focus and so on. My issue is how targeted audiences as a whole often times becomes an excuse for agendas & the active ostracizing of other potential audiences. Female targeted media can be great, as long as first & foremost it’s a good piece of media. Female characters getting focus can be great, as long as the characters & their story are good themselves. And I’ll point out it’s exactly the same for any other form of media or targeted audience. Nothing is inherently bad simply by being a genre or category. Almost anything has the potential to work as long as someone makes it good. Which by extension allows the audience gained to reach beyond the target. Giving everyone something to enjoy & love. Which in the case of female media allows it to have the same well deserved notoriety & praise as anything else.

I don't think the problem is that female-targeted media being looked down upon so much as it's the people who create it looking down on women. Cynical producers/directors see that they need to have strong female characters and opt for STRONG FEMALE characters. In truth, what we want are STRONG female CHARACTERS. If people who respect women are running the project, they tend to do things like allow the female characters to have flaws and motives that do not solely revolve around their romantic interest; they fail and struggle in their journey to reach their goals. The creators respect their audience's ability to accept that women are just as flawed as anyone else.

I tried shadow and bone. Was hyped about it at first until the guy wizard kidnapped the main girl and held her in his castle against her will and I was like whelp, I'm done. I don't have any patience with stories that are ok with portraying women are things to do with as they wish.

​@@Blue_Star_Child I understand where you're coming from initially, but I do have to say that the darkling (though portrayed as a romantic interest at first) is quickly revealed as a villain and his actions are looked down upon in the story. You just didn't give the story long enough to get to that point lol.

No that's true. Nina was in Ravka and not Ketterdam when she gets caught by the Druskeles, atleast in the show. In the books she was in Fjerda with Zoya and her peers for a mission and gets caught by Matthias and team.

I thought that maybe the change in color had something more to do with Nina later on (in CK) kinda being the connection between the Second Army, Zoya, the Ravkan king etc. and the crows on the other side, as she is the *only* trained Grisha amongst them and a former soldier.

Nina was never meant to be plus sized she was always described as curvy in the books. Jesper, on the other hand, was in the books supposed to be dark-skinned and was whitewashed in the show so if you wanna complain about something complain about that!

That's the problem with most live action reboots: they think the needed problem in old, nostalgia filled adventure cartoons is to make everything bleak, dark, sexy and gritty. It happens with Winx, Dragonball, Avatar, Riverdale, you name it lol

YES. I have read the books prior to the show and tho I was "wtf" at some dialogue, the camera work, soundtrack, etc were beyond expectation for a netflix show for me.

Yep, the books had an unreliable first person perspective. It was missing a lot of the background facts, motivations, and political issues of the world.

"Slaughtered the source material" is the PERFECT way to describe what Netflix did to Winx. Not everything needs to be a Riverdale ripoff, but Netflix tried its hardest 🙄 not only that but the animation was weak, the storyline sucked, I despised how they made the girls hate each other (even tho the Winx were all besties by the end of the first episode in the OG series), they got rid of some of the diversity in the show, and just I could go on, but I'm preaching to choir 😅

Exactly what I was going to say! Plus with all the new streaming services like HBO, Disneyplus, Peacock as you mentioned, I think its getting harder for Netflix to acquire the "popular" titles at the moment so they're kind of forced to bring in all these shows that aren't necessarily good.

OK, but what about the crappie shows they make themselves that they keep giving us, instead of renewing shows that we actually want and that are good.

@@feli3051 Unfortunatly, Netflix has the mindset that people won't watch shows that are longer than five seasons. So at five seasons or close to that they cancel them. Don't expect any netflix original show to surpass that. If they cancel the show before five seasons, most likely means the show didn't do well overall and it wasn't worth continueing. Got to remember that even if a show is bad it might still get a lot of views, like the reality stuff, people love reality tv. The show might be good, but if it only has a niche following than overall it's not worth to continue.
