Why Neville Brody thinks design can be compared to jazz 

“I see design as something more poetic, almost a visual jazz,” says graphic designer and former D&AD President Neville Brody. “Where there's a set of rules or tools that we understand how to use and then we push that into a performative or expressive response and allow unexpected things to happen. I was always influenced by (the writer and visual artist) William S. Burroughs, and his idea was that we can’t sit and think of something new, we need tools that can (help us) do that.”
In this exclusive excerpt from his talk Transform, Remake, Remodel held at D&AD Festival 2023 in London, Brody explains why creating structures and then adding unpredictable elements makes for great design.
