Im going to write the history of the new years celebration. Take what i say with a kilogram of salt because im not an expert on the subject nor did I do much research, this is information I got from a video i saw years ago. Centuries ago people would celebrate the end of the harvest, a celebration of all their crops having been grown and harvested. This would then lead to a start to a new harvest or what is today a new year. The church at the time wanted some clout so that they could spread their religion, so they told everyone Jesus Christmas was born at the same time as the the end of a harvest (the event was around dec 25). When calenders became a thing later on the holiday would then be split into two different holidays, x-mas and new years. This is why we celebrate new years and why christmas and new years are only a week from each other. (remember not an expert on the subject at all)
