What’s crazier to me is that they went from this, to ditto (which is a distinctly somber and emotional song) while keeping a similar concept.
@catchingteez
@catchingteez Год назад
I think it worked so well because they didn't change their concept so much as the tone. A lot of groups make the mistake of changing both at once, which tends to throw people off sometimes. They still kept the same youthfulness, just showed a different side of the same coin.

It was purely the music for me that just slapped. I'm a veteran kpop fan, so I'm kinda past the whole "this is deep" or "this is never done before" stuff. It's just a very well produced track that was done justice via the right vocalists.
@catchingteez
@catchingteez Год назад
Yeah, definitely a catchy and well-performed song. I wasn't necessarily saying this stuff has never been done before, just pointing out some possible reasons that I think people latched onto it as much as they did. Like I said, overanalyzing kpop for the fun of it!
@qr-eh9es
@qr-eh9es Год назад
you probably like harmonically ambiguous music. ;) research more about the topic: jazz harmony and chromatic harmony - it's actually very present in kpop. most songs (even the ones with 4 chords) use ambiguous chords AKA chords that are from 'another key'. modal mixture is also something very mainstream is kpop, it's basically the chords going from the major tonality to the relative minor, and making the song sound interesting. if you wanna know more, you can always ask !
@fireflieer2422
@fireflieer2422 Год назад
@@qr-eh9es oh myy your comment got me so excited because this explains so much! Normally I listen to songs I like on loop until I get tired of it. Totally not the case with NJs songs! I listen to their songs everyday and still can find parts in the song that I find structurally interesting to listen to. So is this very prevalent within a certain genre? And are there any songs that you can suggest?
@qr-eh9es
@qr-eh9es Год назад
@@fireflieer2422 :D it's really fun being a music major because it's really cool understanding paterns and WHY i like certain stuff. sometimes im like 'why do i like this song so much?' / 'why do i like this specific part?' - i analyze the song and then understand why. their (newjeans') type of chord progression is VERY common within r&b. i can give you several examples of similar songs harmonically within the r&b genre ('jay park - queen wasabi', 'jay park - all i wanna do', 'ninemuses - drama', 'moonlight sunrise - twice', 'tell me - fifty fifty', 'naughty - red velvet', and basically all songs produced by chacha beats LMAO) there are many more ! kpop is FULL of modal mixture. it focuses on ambiguity. my question is: do you have a preference for sonority? for example: do you like a piano ballad? acoustic guitars? 'noise' songs? synth-pop? retro synths? "arabian" sounding? sine waves? tell me and i will find the best match for you ! i find that this will make my suggestion way more detailed, because within harmonically interesting songs, i could show you very different songs in terms of instrumentation and the style itself (example: 'red velvet - automatic', 'twinkle twinkle - girls day' and 'windy day - oh my girl')
@fireflieer2422
@fireflieer2422 Год назад
@@qr-eh9es now that’s just a big chad moment!! Knowing the theory on why something just works for sure makes you appreciate the song even more. So I reeeally like synthpop (for example star by Loona) and retro synth (I’m not sure but maybe sunset by Twice could be an example?). I definitively prefer songs with a more calm vibe but please feel free to give a wide suggestion range. I will def check them out tomorrow! Also on the sidenote: no wonder I enjoy vibing to rnb songs so much if they all utilise the same pattern scheme.

I hate saying this as well but…I can’t see NewJeans being successful if they had a different creative director. Heejin definitely is a creative genius. I hate praising her, but…it had to be said. Heejin also didn’t get enough backlash to mess with their careers. Even creepy male CEOs don’t get much backlash. I mean…look at YG. He had a whole hand in the making and training of Baby Monster and people are still hype for the group despite them being in the same age range as NewJeans and despite the fact that YG fell in love with his wife when she was around the age of Baby Monster’s youngest member.

One thing I noticed is how diverse their fanbase is as well. Majority of them are girls and women in their teens and early 20s and have a very small male fanbase, despite the fact that people said the “catered” to 40 year old men. Also, I have noticed that their audios on RU-vid and songs on Spotify have more streams than the main mv which means that more people are listening to the song itself vs watching the mv which shows that people like them more for their music and not their appearance.

For me it was the nostalgia! NewJeans reminded me of things from my childhood such as the Cheetah Girls, Hannah Montana, Big Time Rush, and Victorious but made it more modern and cool! It also reminded me of my time in high school getting butterflies from texting late at night and hanging out with my friends. It got the actual feeling of my youth across without feeling synthetic.

personally, I still cannot explain how incredibly addicting this debut felt to me. When they debuted I couldn’t stop thinking about them and their music, everything felt so new, refreshing and innovative. I definitely think that the team behind newjeans is probably one of the most revolutionary in kpop, they went all out for newjeans and managed to give them a solid identity in just a few months. From the marketing to the concept, everything was incredibly well studied to get stuck in your head; and with the production they had since day 1, I definitely think their success was kind of expected. As of right now, I still enjoy their music (even if I think that their debut era will forever be unmatched, since it was so new and never-seen before) but I’m worried than in a few years people might get tired of the group or turn their backs on them; seeing how fast kpop fans change their ideas it wouldn’t be a surprise. On top of that, a group that relies so much on a specific image and type of music can have some trouble in maintaining longevity. By the way, ditto and omg(especially) indeed had a more pop and western appeal, with a more easily digestible sound; but I don’t know for how long they can capitalize on this nostalgia/y2k concept

Yeah they came out along with the y2k trend and influence and captured the essence. However, it’s a trend and trends come and go. I’m already getting fatigued by this trend. It makes me feel like when everyone gets out of this trend, will newjeans just jump into whatever trend comes in to fill the space next? Plus, their creative manager ruined listening to their music for me, made me uncomfortable. I know it’s not the girls fault. I just can’t with her, she ruined it for me😖😭

You were right on the nose about the choreography! As a Kpop fan since 2017, I’ve never seen a choreo that’s as fun, addicting, AND easy to learn (for the most part) as hype boy’s. It’s not super technical, but it’s not too simple either. It looked so fun to do, that it was actually my first Kpop choreo that I fully learned!

I'm too old to be "stanning" minors, so I try to stay away from the stan culture especially if the group's idols could literally be my kids... However, it's a fact that Hype Boy has this dreamy vibe and sound that is just so difficult to put into words. I tend to be a very emotional listener. I listen to a variety of genres, mostly influenced by my parents and where I grew up, so to me it never mattered WHO sings but how the song SOUNDS. I immerse myself in music and since my imagination is heavily fueled by my emotions and ambience, I have a thing for music that affects me emotionally. Hype Boy has this synth that takes me back to my childhood, the 90s, early 2000's, and for some reason it reminds me of old Eurodance genre (I was an absolute sucker for Sonique at the time). Funny enough, the MV uses some imagery that for reasons I can't explain, again, makes me feel nostalgic. Specifically, the spiral staircase. I remember, when I was really young, like 5-8 years old, I had this one friend who lived in a house with a similar staircase, and the imagery connects some complicated but positive feelings for me. The colors in the MV also remind me of the color trend back in the day and I even had T Shirts in neon orange, green and pink. Overall, me being 30+ and listening to Hype Boy is like a time capsule. But at the same time it's almost like a dream of what I wish my youth looked like (heck my high school days weren't as exciting lol). And I think many people feel this way when they listen to Hype Boy. It's "fake nostalgia" in a way.

a lot of recent opinions about new jeans' music being bad/mid/not interesting is a proof how fast fans' taste changes within short amount of time. it's giving "consumer behaviour" as you people the first to praise new groups and concepts and then turn it into ashes when for you the freshness starts to fade. nj have a good music which has its unique colours that is very stable in a sense of genre and likebility, they have amazing youthful concepts and amazing voices, their performances are strong and various but no matter what group it is, it's never gonna be enough for you. I'm not a fan of new jeans but i defend their work because their case is what made me realize that it's not their fault in people loosing interest, it's your fault. fault of consuming so much information and always stimulating your brain your tastes that eventually you get less and less satisfaction and actual enjoyment of kpop music. in order for companies to keep up with that pace they release more and more, they rush they do it in a low quality manner. and you still always mad about something when the problem is you. i know that in this months or so people start to do more and more opinion videos with a title "why new jeans lack ____" "why new jeans are boring" "why new jeans are not bringing anything new" "why new jeans are bad performances" and the last thing that will stay is hate. maybe you all will hate their popularity (if not so now) like you did it with ive, stayc and other new girl groups, or maybe you will desperately will try to find something new to praise like fifty fifty who are popular now for their amazing music. but as soon as they will stay a little longer like this you'll throw them into the trash. it's so predictable that i don't even want to be associated with it

You’re so right about the concept. There has been previous artists that tried the Y2K concept in kpop but the kind of vibe they tried wasn’t this one, the ones that come to mind are Yena with a disney channel kind of approach with Smiley and Somi with the mean girls concept for Dumb Dumb. The type of Y2K newjeans does reminds me more of Sour by Olivia Rodrigo and the more grounded approach both have. I find it really interesting that in kpop, a genre that is very dedicated to this kind of rococo aesthetic with big colors, lots of sets, very sharp editing,… a concept more chilled and grounded in day to day life like newjeans has this much popularity.

I think another main reason was as their hype grew, people "pressured" themselves to like certain songs, for example: i have a lot of friends who never really got into kpop, but gradually newjean's music began to seep into their playlists due to the amount of people talking and listening to it. I for one, thought it was a little plain at first but then found that newjeans' songs grew on me due to the amount of talk that happened around them, so in order to not be left behind, i started liking and listening to their songs. Its also kinda funny bc sometimes I hear people talking about other kpop releases calling them "too simple" when I think newjeans could also be considered "simple" music to listen due to it listen-ability. I also personally dont hear the connection between RNB and newjeans cause it lacks the riffs and soul rnb singers have particularly 2000s western rnb, honestly it kinda sounds like something Ariana Grande wld release on her albums. But feel free to correct me on this, because I dont really know much about the rnb scene, so it'd be interesting for more information on it!!! I also think "refreshing" is overused, because newjeans sound isn't new, for example: IU's BBIBBI, people just haven't been looking for it. Anyways, i think this topic is really mind provoking due to newjeans fast rise to fame, so another perspective would be much appreciated, also these are just my opinions, so take it how u will :)

The girls had been getting hate, and a lot of people said they were a flop but after Next Level I feel like the whole conversation around them changed. -Momoland - Bboom Bboom. This song, for better or worse, changed the trajectory of the group. Tsuki fancam - Gingamingayo. It's my favorite NJ song honestly. I had been out of the whole kpop culture for two years until around Feb this year because of Enhypen. then, i noticed how OMG, Cookie and Hype Boy were used so often on RU-vid shorts, Instagram reels, etc. I didn't really know much about the mv's honestly, I just thought the song and the choreo was so much fun! I generally don't stan groups (and I mean, there was a reason why I stopped being a kpop fan in the beginning of 2021 after being into kpop for 4 years up until that point) and I guess a part of me just enjoys the liberation I feel listening to that song. Like being with your friends, talking about boys, having crushes on them; I feel like that part of my girlhood was ripped away from me because of how I was raised, because how the concept of having a crush was villainized in my family and because I have spent majority of my life being in only girls institution. NGL, sometimes I feel very envious of people who had that experience because I always watched from the outside as girls had crushes on boys, had boyfriends, interacted with boys. (and I feel like NJ's concept brings out those emotions out of me as well) but I'm glad I can set that aside and just BE a girl while I listen to that song. Side Note: I got back into kpop because of Heeseung and NJ's songs really remind me of him!

In my honest opinion, not only hype boy but every nwjs song feels like whoever is producing/writing is not wanting to make a smash hit, but to make a good song you'll want to repeat, just for the fun of making a good song. I feel like companies are focusing too much on the results a hit can bring (viral coreo, brand deals, charts, viral edits, followers...) by making formula songs that always sound the same, and say the same. When you focus on the quality of the song, all of those results will happen organically. Exactly like hype boy.

That's so funny. Haha. Their amazing music with jazzy chords/extensions are a huge reason they're viral, their looks for sure is another reason. Their amazing carefree choreo and attention to detail, the aesthetic of their nostalgic. Like i said, it's too simplistic to say it's just the music, but it's definitely a big part of it. The biggest thing is they have that star power X factor that most artists and groups just lack.

Never listened to K-pop before NewJeans. Years of Metallica, Tool, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Pantera etc, so no clue what Y2K K-pop sounded like. I love NewJeans. Their songs are all catchy AF, and all of the fan interaction stuff they do just makes you like the members more. It's "cute girls doing cute things" IRL. They come across as a group of friends who do fun things together, and also happen to put out bangers. Their videos are part of it too. The storytelling in Cool With You, Ditto, OMG, and ETA is pretty awesome. Not a fan of Cookie because, yeah... it comes across as creepy and not appropriate. Also, never knew what a bias was before, but mine is Haerin.

What i also like about NJ is how their songs are not pretentious girlbossy with 0 thoughts put into the lyrics as long as it’s catchy and contain one word about self-love mental health girlboss i’m the top. I understand a lot of kpop groups want to be marketed more globally and target western audience but damn, bandwagoning on social movement with no comprehension whatsoever from all parties involved about that movement just make it sounds shallow. A hollow pretty shell. That being said, i’d rather listen to typical teenager love songs like NJ’s songs that are more genuine than feminist girlbossy empty songs

(As a warning, this comment gets very negative towards the end, but I want to clarify that it’s not directed to any specific person, especially not the creator. It’s just my own general thoughts.) I kinda hope I never meet mhj, because if I do, fists WILL be flying. When nj first dropped I was all ”oh! she did a female shinee.” and then ”/oh./ 🥴 she did a female shinee 🥴🥴🥴” As for her telling to keep Taemins chest soft, I only read that she told him and the rest of Shinee that for the Sherlock photo shoot! Danger is meant to be a sexier song. But the Sherlock photo shoot tho… looks like something found on a creeps computer. Taemin was freshly 18 for it too. But for me, the most interesting thing about Hype Boy is that it only went VIRAL viral when that kpop bg danced to it in the military. Which.. it isn’t a secret of how much the military loves when a gg comes to perform. But it’s cool to see that diversity in the mv’s are starting to break into the mainstream kpop mvs. I hope other companies continues on that. But before all the nj stans comes for my neck I want to make a disclaimer that I don’t hate the girls or the group. I really don’t. I pity them. I hate everything around them tho, because Taemin is my ult of ults and I’ve seen how debuting at 14 destroyed his mental health. I’ve seen countless of idols, even ones who debuted at 18, talk about how ruthless the industry is and how they wish they hadn’t debuted at that age, or at all. How they’re mentally stuck at their debut age. I’ve seen idols talk about their starvation diets and I’ve seen minors be bullied by the fans for ”getting fat” when they’re literally still growing. NJ won’t be an exeption to any of it. They’re already being sexualised with Cookie, and the school girl outfits, where I saw the safety shorts of the 14 yo because the skirt was so short. There’s E-rated fanfic about them on AO3. Even worse shit on twitter. They have to entertain men twice and thrice their ages in their fanmeets. And the kpop community is clapping along to it.

School is an appropiate place for school uniforms, on a stage with skirts so short that safety shorts are visible from just walking and a skirt hemline nearly the same lenght as the jacket is not. Again, on the FOURTEEN Y/O. And even if only 10% of their fans are men, just going by their spotify listeners, that’s still 2 million men. Not an insignificant number. I can’t say anything about you, but I once spent an afternoon on twitter reporting at least 15 of them for posting p*rn clips and fantazising it was the 14yo or other child idols. i mean i find it ridiculous that newjeans current success is built on payola. They definetely blew up in Korea. and 20 million listeners on spotify is not payola. I mean New jeans debuting in HYBE have a bigger platform so more people tuned into their music. But what made them sucessful is their music. Their music isn't your typical kpop banger like Blackpink(girl crush), TWICE(cute) or Out of the box ahead of time music like 2ne1 , GG , f(x), red velvet, GFRIEND. They didn't put out Summer banger like SISTAR. Maybe they lean towards the 1st gen GG style. But they are the first of their kind Girl group in this generation, with good music you wouldn't get tired listening no matter what your mood is. I mean they just debuted with a song without any notice. They were potrayed as 5 teenage girls living their life and having fun , not as 5 kpop idols. Like however unrealistic their success might look its a fact that they blew up because of their own hardwork. I mean if payola was true why didn't TXT or enhyphen or lesserafim get that benefit. Like NewJeans was the group HYBE had least expectations for. They never though attention would blew up because its a plain song. But People loved the song so much just through the M/V that it hit no 1 on charts after the digital release. I mean the youtube chart in SK is also a proof of the same. What helped them with their current success is their own hardwork and having a huge audience being a HYBE GG. Like HYPE boy's success was pretty evident with almost every kpop idol dancing to it at their concets, fan meets, video calls. That's also another factor that made them go more viral. I mean IVE had more music show wins in their debut year. Like 41 wins for a rookie group. And New jeans won in music show because they are 1000% popular in Korea. go to these sites : www.instiz.net/spage/8 and www.melon.com/chart/index.htm. The no:of likes on melon reflects their popularity in SK . New Jeans , IVE and Lesserafim are the Top GG now in SK . Their digital performance reflects their music show wins. I mean HYBE would be making a Loss if they were paying out So many music platforms. Major MNC's and Luxury fashion houses to push New jeans

I mean their fandom is not enough large to pack those numbers they are definitely popular but popularity is not equal to fan base ( I hope u understood what I'm trying to say) but at the end of the day they are just another kpop group so we shouldn't compare them with other artists names

NewJeans can’t even be in an MV with boys within their own age range without meltdowns. Not to mention YG is a known groomer who ruined his wife’s career on purpose because he developed feelings for her while she was a literal teenager.
