Why no one plays TIKI-TAKA now?

Football Shift

Tiki-taka has its roots in the passing football of Johan Cruyff's Barcelona and Ajax teams of the 1980s and 1990s. Cruyff, a true pioneer of Total Football, introduced a dynamic philosophy where players seamlessly shifted positions and moved with grace on the pitch. In the early 1990s, he planted the seeds of Tiki taka at Barcelona, laying the foundation for a lasting footballing legacy. As Cruyff passed on the torch of leadership, Dutch managers Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard embraced the appreciation for possession and space during their stints at the Catalan club. However, the zenith of Tiki-taka brilliance arrived with Barcelona's renowned La Masia academy, which nurtured footballing legends like Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Andres Iniesta. These exceptional talents embodied the very essence of Tiki-taka, a philosophy refined through La Masia's teachings, and later showcased their magical skills under the tactical genius of Pep Guardiola. However, unfortunately, not a lot of managers follow Tiki Taka these days. Why is it? Let's find out.

But also and mostly because, it was *never* a thing. It never meant anything. The first time people used the term "tiki taka", it was negatively, and it only existed in the Spanish language. People then saw Guardiola took over Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Busquets & co, possibly THE best team of all time, they noticed how flawlessly then connected to each other, and decided *that* was the tactic. But the "philosophy" was always Juego de Posicion, something largely driven by Pep and inspired by Cruyff, but not at all by Cruyff alone. Pep's assistant at City and former manager as a player Juanma Lillo also influenced him a lot. As did Bielsa, under whom Pep never played. People at first thought "tiki taka" meant passing the ball around, they put no actual thought into it. Then as the best possible players got old or retired, the same people that used to call "tiki taka" boring for being "just passing" started missing it, because later players didn't play tiki taka as prettily. Until people decided tiki taka was dead altogether. It's a case of casual fans with very little tactical understanding going by vibes and forming cheap narratives.

Not true, Tiki taka is an euphemism, as long as you play possesion football, move the ball fast, can play from the back flawlessly, press high, attack spaces all the time and defend with the ball to tire the rival. The best example of "Tiki Taka" and possesion football in the last years was that game of Manchester City vs Bayern in CL 2022-23, where City beat 3-1 Bayern, both teams shared the same principles but one dominated the idea better. Another is the 4-0 from City to Madrid

@@spanishguy818 people highlight the quick short 1-2 passes that unlocked defences during Prime Barca eras as tiki taka. As much as Pep is to be credited for those tactics, those passes are more attributed to the players rather than the coach. If you replace Iniesta and Xavi, the game might have been different. Just look at how De Bruyne plays under Pep. Why bother doing multiple short passes to open space when one pinpoint cross field through ball could do the same thing? Even Kimmich in Bayern under Guardiola played different compared to the previous players mentioned.

It failed because opposing team caught on to simple ways to neutralize. Step 1 - When tiki taka team gains possession, get all your players behind the ball. Step 2 - Stop trying to regain possession. Just defend the zone. This is crucial as tiki taka thrives on your opponents running around like headless chickens try regain possession, thereby opening up their defenses to be exploited. Instead watch them string together 50 passes while being farther from scoring than when they began. Then they get tired and launch an ill advised speculative attack. Step 3- Get the ball. Quick counter. 3 passes and shot at goal. That's how tiki taka was defeated.

"Tiki taka" never really existed, it was just Pep's positional play principles applied to a world class core of players: greatest ever player in Messi, 3 top 10 of all time midfielders in Xavi, Busquets and Iniesta, possibly the best RB of all time in Alves, and then some other fantastic players like Pique, Villa etc. that were excellent on the ball. Pep only "evolved" from it, in that his style looks different now, because as good as KDB, Rodri and Bernardo are, they're not Xavi, Busquets and Iniesta. Walker's no Alves. Haaland isn't a skillful player. But also, teams defend better now. There's less room for aesthetics.

The prime Tiki Taka of late 2000's and early 2010's Barcelona is VERY difficult to do as the players need to know exactly where to be, be very press resistant and be a top tier ball passer. And unless a whole generation players aren't drilled into that style from childhood, having an entire core of players in a team that can do that reliably and consistently is very difficult to achieve.

Tiki taka never died. It would be more accurate to say tiki taka went everywhere than it would be to say it died, but that wouldn't be quite right either. Tiki taka is an extreme version of possession football only available when a team has 11 players on the field with exceptional levels of intelligence and technique. Otherwise, you go with a more basic version of possession. Look at every team at the Euros that just played and compare their playing style to 2008 you would say that Spain's way has spread to the world. Somehow the insecure British football media can't quit trying to discredit tiki taka, when possession football straight from Spain has completely taken over their league, the EPL, and their national team. Pep is their best manager, Southgate is a Pep protege, and somehow the discussion about Spanish football is in a discrediting direction. That's the English national delusion machine for you.

Problem with tiki taka these days is every team is running so much more than before. Even Madrid 2011 for example had cristiano who wouldn’t track dani alves and mesut ozil who didn’t track anyone. So now you have 3 Barca players vs 2 Madrid players and that’s what allows for the triangles to be played and 1-2s. Every time that Barca team to me played complete teams like inter for example and Bayern they lost. They lost to 2014 Madrid too, and then they totally changed their tactics to win in 2015. So tiki taka is an overrated system. Always has been. Spain didn’t play tiki taka from 08-12, it was high possession defensive football especially in 2010.

Tiki Taka's high pressing was destroyed to shreds with Klopp's gegen counter pressing. Pep disliked tiki taka because after a time players were just passing for the sake of it. Jurgen Klopp's high metal football choked them to submission. Only Pep some what could counter klopp's intense pressing with pep's positional play.

Well its not really dead. Tiki taka needs players who are capable of understanding space and have chemistry with each other. At barca, it always clicked amongst the players. Nowadays, the connection between the players has become less. Which inhibits their estimation of where a teammate would be at any given situation. Plus it needs the entire team to have like 99 passing which is again a lot to ask for. The worst outfield passer in Guordiolas barca was puyol. That should tell u how much passing this style of play demands. So its not that tiki taka isnt effective anymore - its just that we dont have teams that have as much chemistry and players who can pick out those passes all the time. Even now, at times u see many teams clicking at times which gives u slight glimpses of tiki taka and quick intricate passing. Barca just happened to be able to do it for the entire game back then.
@vs6300

Most of what you have said can be said of possession football. And possession football isn't tiki taka. Tiki taka is the rapid short passing sequences that can be applied to possession football, but a possession football plan doesn't necessarily have to have tiki taka. Also people's sense of position hasn't changed, in fact it has become better. What has happened is that faster transitions with mids dribbling and making line breaking passes to inverted wingers who cut in and pass to more traditional strikers instead of false 9's.
@abhijithkrishnag8842
@abhijithkrishnag8842 Месяц назад
@@vs6300 possesion football when done with quicker passes is what results in tiki taka. Tiki taka needs positional overloads. Meaning there's less space between ur teammates and there's more space between ur opponents which u exploit. It's about how they used to beat pressure and break lines of defense through quick short passes. Today the same thing is done via a long pass. Often these long passes over the defense lines result into a 50-50 result of being picked up by ur teammate. However quick and short accurate passes have a higher chance of reaching ur teammate (behind the lines) than long balls. The concept of tiki taka exists even now amongst non possesion based teams like real Madrid for example. There are many instances when madrid break lines with quick passes than long balls. The concept of dribbling to beat players is not at all different in possesion based football or tiki taka based football. Especially considering the fact that tiki taka based systems actually had some of the best dribblers in football history. Quick 1-2s are the best example of the existence of tiki taka even today. It's just that we don't see it so often anymore whereas Barca used to do it for the whole 90 mins back then.
@vs6300
@vs6300 Месяц назад
@@abhijithkrishnag8842 Almost correct except for quick one twos which is an old old technique that predate tiki taka. Tiki taka needs at least 5 subsequent passes to qualify as tiki taka. And one more correction, the long passes are usually dead on accurate plus lead directly to dangerous situations that goals can be scored from. Such passes are allocated to players with great vision to recepients who equally know how to drop their markers and move into space incognito. Players like KDB regularly do such passes with an amazing accuracy of 85%.
@abhijithkrishnag8842
@abhijithkrishnag8842 Месяц назад
@@vs6300 well 5 subsequent passes as a count is never really defined as a minimum requirement for tiki taka. Tiki taka as a whole basically means quick and short passes. The 1-2s are kind of a very popul predecessor of tiki taka which still gets employed today. The tiki was just a development to the classical 1-2s where more players are involved. Nevertheless, its still useful. U don't see more players today specifically because they lack the chemistry that Peps Barca specifically had. And yea, long passes are well and good when executed by specificalists like kdb or Kroos. For an avg player, it's always a 50-50 chance. Similarly for the recieving end too. U need to have a player that can fend off their marker like haaland or Lewandowski or someone who's able to outpace their markers like vini or mbappe to reach the long ball. Its down to specific physical requirements amongst players to get them done effectively. While this direct form or attacking requires more physical players, tiki taka required more technical players like xavi, Iniesta, messi, busquets, etc. None of these guys were physical monsters. Neither did they have 99 pace. It's just the different strategies managers use depending on the availability of profiles. And as a trend, it's somehow as though most players today are more physical and less technical. That's why even though they're able to achieve the results, the beauty of the game has diminished.

@@abhijithkrishnag8842 I beg to disagree. Xavi at Barcelona prior to Pep's appointment and tiki taka was sending passes not necessarily long but medium distances from the centre of the pitch diagonally to wingers or forward to strikers.

Guardiola was in a team (Barcelona) that was thrashed by AC Milan 4-0 in a CL final. Milan pressed Barcelona. Its nothing new Italy were playing like this in 1934 watch it on here! Man City have been taught to play like this, however as a City fan i have some times found it Boring & some times it has produced no end product! Spain won the 2024 Euro's because they could play more direct! Indeed their 2 goals in the final were got by swift counter attacks! Not by their relentless possession!

Full video of total misinformation. Tiki taka is just name, but possession base football is not dead at all. first problem is that most teams that wanted to copy didn't have same players as Barsa, so they used to passive passing meted that is easily defeated, casue as Guardiola said has no purpose without to much in to it just passing ball is not a game wining Barsa did pass and move forward so many other teams with less capable players did just passing without moving forward. Next bigger problem is that more coaches found out that you could move faster with and without ball, on other ways. And biggest problem is why not spread it around is because to counter it you just need fast players, zone defense and strength in midle. while to learn players to do it needs specific type of players, that require certain skill set. Way harder to learn and make hose players. While players like Xavi Injesta or Mesi could do great in any other tactic. People to much overlooked that Barca biggest strength was in those end game passes and pre class in attack fast movement that implemented in other great teams as well. While those passes on center of pitch were just tactic of keeping the ball away not to receive goal.

Real Madrid’s random playing and effective counters are what matters in soccer. That’s why they continue to dominate without needing a specific style. This is why Tiki Taka failed, because Bayern destroyed it in 2013, followed by many other teams after that.
