Why Nobody Plays Toons | Yu-Gi-Oh!

Toons are one of the most well-known archetypes in all of Yu-Gi-Oh. They were even played by the creator of Duel Monsters, Pegasus, in the anime! Featuring iconic cards like Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon and Toon Dark Magician Girl, this theme is known by pretty much every old school and new school player. Sadly, despite being so popular within the community, Toons have never gotten a chance to see widespread competitive use in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. In today's video I'll cover the major issues with the Toon theme, and I'll also talk about some areas where I feel like Konami could improve this fan favorite strategy!

As a concept, Toons are amazing: They are basically a "What if we play Magic in Yu-gi-oh?" To use them properly you need a Land (Toon World), they have summoning sickness, they can attack directly unless the opponent has Toon "blockers", etc The fact that they are used in the story by Duel Monsters creator and are based on American cartoons aesthetic is cherry on top as reference to Yu-gi-oh original inspiration YGO can be incredibly creative at times but, alas, as we saw with Cardians, trying to play another cardgame within a cardgame it's simply a nice experiment more than something groundbreaking (as, I guess, it's correct in concept)

I think the single largest thing holding Toons back is their unique gimmick: attacking directly. Making them have summoning sickness, making them require Toon World and making them bad at swarming are all intentional balancing decisions to counteract their ability to ignore your opponent’s monsters. If they’d never had that particular “playstyle” they’d probably have been made a lot more playable at this point.
@HoveringAboveMyself
@HoveringAboveMyself 2 года назад
And that was entirely self-inflicted on Konami's part, in the manga/anime, all Toon World did was give a wonky form of battle protection to your regular monsters (visually represented by them becoming toons). If only they had followed and improved upon that concept instead. Edit: I just realized my last sentence just repeats yours, I'll change it a bit.

@JJMomoida
@JJMomoida 2 года назад
It's a shame, because I remember how, for a short while, toons sorta felt OP in my school. Now, granted, most kids there had JUST starter decks Kaiba and Yugi with very minor alterations from super early boosters like Metal Raiders and whatnot... But yeah, the fact that a toon monster could straight up just jump over your front row and attack you directly felt... well, it felt almost like cheating. It was one of those rare instances in which the real TCG actually sorta FELT like the anime in that you were fighting against these toons that would do weird, unorthodox things.
@JJMomoida
@JJMomoida 2 года назад
@@fumoffu_l Owing to the fact that this school was in a third-world country, we didn't exactly get the most up-to-date boosters or decks at the same time they would be released in, say, the US. As such, people were stuck with a rather small pool of cards for a while. At first, you bet that people were just dueling like in the anime, down to using just 2000 life points and all... I should also mention that this was a country where Spanish was the primary language, so this barrier exacerbated the issue of people just... not playing by the official set of rules. That said, we DID grow up with the game, and as time passed, kids came to actually read the card descriptions, and understand the rules of the game... So by the time the game picked up some more steam and more booster packs and decks were released (the Pegasus and Joey decks in this case), there weren't really a whole lot of issues or misunderstandings when it came to card text... Except for maybe Relinquished, which had... a LOT of text for a non-English-speaker to go through... lol

This archetype has the most divergence between its gameplan and what its fans imagine how the decks works. In the anime, Toons were OP, being able to dodge attacks and preform crazy feets, even by Duelist Kingdom standard, whereas in the game they are slow and restrictive. Most of their monsters are based on DM & GX iconic cards which mostly means bricky high level boss monsters with effects that are battle focused, despite most Toons having Summoning Sickness and little swarming ability. The deck is kind of supposed to be a flashy beatdown that allow for direct attacking to close out games, whereas a control orientated & defencive playstyle is better, with focus on the Traps & Field Spell protecting everything. There is quite a disparagy in how Yugioh is shown & advertised and how we play the game. The 100 LP amazing Ace Monster comeback, with a heart of the cards top deck vs the methodical deck building focusing on consistency, tempo, versatility and meta analysis, for deck optimisation. Toons are the prime example.

Yugi would get absolutely Stomped in any real world tournament because of this. A ton of random Goodstuff and big flashy creatures, with very little synergy. @@steeveedragoon No, it's actually the opposite. The Konami real life imitation of the Duel Monsters card game can make the anime card game look more boring than it was ever supposed to be. The real life card game is a pale imitation of a great idea. Of course, as with every card game in real life, everyone eventually optimizes their decks to the point where everyone plays the same few strategies, and the game becomes less about creativity, and more about learning and copying everyone else. A meta is then created within the game itself, and the original beauty of the game becomes lost. How many Yugioh cards that were really cool in the anime ended up being useless in the Konami card game? Everyone uses the same few cards, and the game has become so much more bloated than ever before. To me the game was at it's best back in 2004-2008, but it even had a very complex meta back then as well. The game, and the shows should have stopped after GX. The anime is how the card game was supposed to be played, but as with everything in the real world, people would rather win than experiment, and it can be frustrating to try something that doesn't work consistently. I would do anything for the game to be more like the anime, and for cards to actually be hard to come by so not everyone could acquire certain cards. I don't even compare the real life Yugioh card game to the anime/manga, because it's not the same game. I hate when people put the two games in the same category, and criticize the anime's characters because they don't play the same boring meta that we do in real life.

@@donavonhoward114 Half of what you said has been debunked by so many content creators (including the maker of this video). You state 2004-2008 as the best time of the game. Meanwhile, that's the time when Dark Armed Dragon was required to even win a single round at a regional. The meta back then was much more restrictive. I don't play much anymore, and 2003-2005 was when most of my playing happened. At my locals, almost everyone ran the same beat down strategy. There was no deck variety until me and a single other person shook it up. Also you're very very wrong if you think copying a deck means you can pilot it. On top of that, the people winning large scale tournaments aren't net decking. They are creating the net decks. You'll see the same deck types, but you won't see the same exact deck list when you get to top 8 or top 16. During 2004-2008 there would be maybe 5 decks that were even good enough to be considered rouge. Now we usually see 2-3 tier 1 decks, 2-3 tier 2, and 5-6 Rogue strategies. The variety is much larger, because Konami actively creates archetypes with intended synergy. Also "The anime was how the card game was supposed to be played" Is that way they play with 2000 LP? Is that why they don't have to tribute summon? Is that why they can play trap cards from their hands? TLDR; Almost everything you said is wrong; and you clearly just liked the game better when you were a kid, because you were a kid.

My favorite toon interaction was a random rogue toon otk, where they spend resources to get out toon dark magician girl who was one of the only toon at the time to not have the no attack clause on initial summon. boost her up to 8k with a combination of her own effect+megamorph, and then attack direct for game. At the time i was running semochi/reficule burn and just so happened to have a magical cylinder down. you can kind of guess what happened and no he was not amused by it lol.

What Toons need: more Dark Magician, Red-Eyes, Cyber Dragon, and Harpie Lady (cards that establish field presence), and fewer Barrel Dragon and Buster Blader (cards that literally do nothing in Toons). basically take great generic monsters, give them another effect to fit in as Toons, and go from there (or make Toons of iconic archetype cards, like Toon HERO Stratos and Toonknight Altair). Their backrow is great, and they should be a "build a board, control the game for a turn, then swing for big damage." If they could attack directly the turn they're summoned, that'd be kinda stupid. It's just an incoherent mess right now. So yeah, cards that can special summon themselves or plus off of their summon and more control cards so you get a good stun deck that doesn't need to actually get over anything.

I use ancient gear cards with toon cards lol ancient gear dragon is pretty good at defending toon kingdom with its quick effect to negate spell/trap or card effects once per turn monsters like that will help out alot. And with a few terror kingdoms. Basically. Just kind of dont fully rely on a whole toon deck have enough to be able to get around and make sure u have enough protection on the field before even activating toon world/kingdom. Just have to be able to accept the gamble and be able to take loses if u lose because you lose your toon world and all toon monsters. But i mean shit when you do get a victory it feels pretty damn good 😂

The problem with older toon monsters is very simple... they have their archetypical effect + the OG effect of the monster. This is bad because what it boils down to is that toons just end up having a whole bunch of random effects, leaving toons with little cohesion or end goal beyond "summon toon, attack directly!" Toons need some retrains from cards that Pegasus used that are normal monsters (parrot dragon, toon alligator, that random fusion monster) and give it effects that would benefit and create an end goal for toons.

I think its because Toons are hampered by their anime appearance. There, the toon archetype's biggest strength was how un-interactable it was. Non-toons could not attack toons, period. Obviously, this wouldn't fly in the real card game, but despite that the monsters are still balanced as if they had the anime level immunity. Imagine it, if the toon type had a specific ruling that stated no non-toon can attack or kill a toon unless specifically mentioned via card effect.
@Modie

As someone who had a few Toon cards back in the day, I feel the main problem from a design perspective is that Toon cards were not supposed to be an "archetype". Toon cards were basically just toon versions of popular cards. They weren't new, they were just cards that already existed + having the toon effect. So it was not like you had effects in these cards that would play off each other. It seems like Konami at least added new effects to some of the toon cards later on, but as long as they are just redoing popular cards (and they are mainly popular due to the anime), then the main thing missing is some strategy that goes beyond "summon and attack directly". I mean, just having a monster that could protect Toon world itself would already be helpful.

Toon Kingdom's effect should let you protect it from destruction by banishing a Toon from your hand face-down, since its cost for everything else banishing face-down too. It's from the hand instead of the deck just to limit it; you don't want a field card that gives all the opponents monster targeting/battle protection plus can't be destroyed as long as they have cards in the deck.
@blackcadejo

I Think that's the biggest problem. Sure you can search out a decent toon monster while also thinning the deck by 6-7 cards, but the result is a single monster on the field. And no Toon Kingdom, or no Toons in hand to tribute with, you may not even be able to play that card. And even if you can, any other archetype is going to combo, and build a much stronger board using the extra deck, and all you have is a single toon monster that took 6 cards to get, is dependent on a field card with no protections staying in play, and isn't hard to run over with most extra deck monsters. There's no combo potential. There's no good strategy. I'd wager even a less than perfect Ice Barrier deck would easily beat out toons. It just can't go anywhere.

Toon Stratos: Has the ATK, DEF, Level, and Attribute of original Stratos It’s effect is… While you control “Toon World”, you can special summon this card from your hand. If this card is summoned, activate one of these effects: 1. Add a “Toon” card from your deck to your hand 2. Destroy Spell/Trap cards on the field equal to other “Toon” cards you control. (This effect might be broken without a once per turn effect, but this is a complete reference to Stratos, that I don’t want a once per turn, but, if it must, there might just be a once per turn) While you control “Toon World”, this card can attack your opponent directly, unless your opponent also controls a “Toon” monster, this card must attack that opponent’s “Toon” monster for its attack. (I don’t want it to have summoning sickness) That’s all for today’s “Potentially real card”, see you guys soon

What Toons need is a better field spell. Books don't need a world, or a kingdom, in order to be safe: they need a library! Toon Library - Field Spell - Activate this card by banishing 5 cards from the top of your deck face down. Card effects cannot be activated in response to this card's activation. ( Maybe even a restriction that it can't be activated if you have an extra deck? Maybe only one of these restrictions, maybe both) This card gains the following effects depending on how many Toon monsters are on your side of the field: 1+ You can banish the top card of your deck face down when a Toon card would be destroyed. 2+ All Toon cards gain protection from targeting. 3+ Once per turn, you can add one Yoon card from your deck or GY to your hand. 4+ Once per turn, you can target and destroy one card your opponent controls. 5+ All Toon Monsters you control can attack twice. For fun and extra support, you can also add a different spell card to counteract Toon monster's drawback Speed Reading - Continuous Spell - All Toon monsters you control can attack the turn they are summoned.

How to fix toons: 1. low level summon searcher. 2. a card that allows toons to attack same turn as summoned and protects the field spell. I feel if they gave a searchable protection to the field spell that lets toons ignore the "summoning sickness" it would make a fairly ok otk deck. It still wouldn't be amazing but would be a lot better than it is now. If you wanted you can balance it by having the effects stack/toon on field. Say "having one or more toon(s) lets you ignore summoning sickness, having 2 or more lets you send this card in place of toonworld/kingdom if it is destroyed by opponents card effect".... that way people aren't saying its too broken.

As someone that plays Toons, they're kinda aggressive in how anti-meta they are by design. Even if Toons get absolutely busted support, the idea of a mirror match would be enough to keep it from being prevalent. A mirror match between Toon decks is equivalent of pulling teeth because Toons lose their direct attacks if there's a Toon on the opponents field. It would just be a race to see who can set up Kingdom and a large beatstick first while the Toons pound on each other, either until someone loses LP for run out of cards to banish. They have to rely on being rogue in order to not be a nightmare to play. That being said I still love the archetype, and are only really a few key support cards away from being really good.

I think the Toon World card could have benefited more as a field card with effects instead of being a simple magic card. It could have been made where Toon World gave an attack and defense boost specifically to all toon monsters and once per turn, the owner of Toon World can select one toon monster to "Hide" in Toon World and not be targeted for attack. Some toon cards say you must pay X life points to attack. I say make this an optional thing for toons if you want to do direct damage, this way Toons will be able to do normal attacks against monsters. One effect that could be done for toon monsters is give some of the high level toons the ability to "Dodge" attacks like with Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon in the Anime, but make it a once per turn effect and requiring an X number of lifepoints, because "The cuddliest creature never, ever get hit.".

For example, making it so that you could use page flip, comic hand, or toon terror without a toon world would make the deck more consistent. Another idea would be to update bookmark from negating just destroy effect of toon world to include negating targeting effects so it could a better protector of the toon world.

My toon deck is pretty good and it runs off of red stone of legend into red eyes toon dragon which could possibly lead into a toon dark magician, which in turn is another toon monster all on turn 1 without the summoning conditions of toon world. Alternatively, if I have 2 toon cyber dragons (or at least 1 dragon with the previous set up) I can summon cyber dragon first then do the previous set up to either get a second cyber dragon from my hand using red eyes, or if it's in the deck, i can use magician to get it from the deck which I can then syncro into nova dragon and then into cyber infinity. The deck needs someway to bypass not being able to attack the turn that Toons are summoned. Another useful thing IMO would be a level 4 or lower Toon Monster that has a built in toon Kingdom effect. IE. When this monster is summoned, It's effect becomes that of Toon Kingdom.

Me as an avid Toon player: sees title, gets mad. Also me: watches video, agrees with most (if not all) of the points

As someone who has built the deck and played it a few times at Local events, the problems I faced were often consistent: 1. Price wall. Toon cards (at least in the uk) can be very expensive to pick up. 2. Most toon variants (I.e. dark magician) sadly don’t work with their non-toon archetypes such as dark magic circle or buster blader support. 3. Until page-flip was released, toons depended on tribute summoning or black sone of ancients to summon red-eyes/dark magician 4. Over dependence on toon kingdom as a card to play. Shame every deck main decks back row hate 5. Summon sickness gives toons an unfair advantage compared to better OTK battle decks 6. Very difficult to make the deck consistent due to requiring 3 of each good toon card.
